Dr Fate was one of the original members of the Justice Society, a superhero team comprised of heroes from the golden age of comics back in the 1940s. In some continuities he's the same guy, Kent Nelson, whose lived for a century thanks to magical nature of the helm, which would explain why he's so weary here.
Superman basically just has no defense from magic, it affects him the same way it would any other mortal. That's one reason why Mr. Mxyzptlk for instance is able to wreak havoc with him. He has other magical villains in the comics, like Silver Banshee, Lord Satanus, and La Encantadora.
_"Superman basically just has no defense from magic, it affects him the same way it would any other mortal."_ That's not quite the case e.g. if Black Adam says "Shazam" and superspeeds out of the way so the magical lightning strikes Superman then Superman is only mildly injured by it, an ordinary human would be dead. The rule is magic affects him but negative effects (e.g. damage and mind control) practically never take like the opponent expects them to.
Doctor Fate is a really cool character and one of the the most OP characters in the DC Universe and the character of Doctor Strange from Marvel Comics was inspired by Doctor Fate. If want to learn more about Doctor Fate Id recommend checking out the Justice League and Justice League: Unlimited shows set in this universe, and you can also check out Young Justice which features Doctor Fate. One thing about Superman is that his Kryptonian DNA is vulnerable to magic and magic based attacks so he doesn't have the best time facing magical villains.
You mean ,copied.. 😂..and suprman doesn't have any special resistance to magic.. just like any 1 else with out magical nature..this is more accurate..can spider man..batman. iron man .ect ..Resist magic? Afcorst not..suprman simply is better in dealing with physical threats like darkside or something..not with supernatural things
Wrong. In the DC universe anyone who doesn't use magic has no defense against it. It has nothing to do with Superman's kryptonian DNA. If Superman ever learnt to use magic he'd be able to protect himself against it. In DC magic and science are antagonists. And cannot affect the other. So a magical being has no defense against attacks based on science and viceversa. For example: Dr Fate could never take off Superman's powers as they're based in science.
I think it’s the sort of thing that magic has few limitations outside of one’s will or strength of mind, so Superman can’t be invulnerable to something that has so few limits
@@Avenger85438 I know but it isn't about facts ya nerd it's about introducing people to stuff they may not know Is rhw social aspect that foreign to you ? Here's a thing that you don't know but you may know this other thing
I always wished they would do more stories where Superman had to deal with magic. It doesn't outright weaken him like kryptonite, but he doesn't have the same invulnerable defenses against. So you could still have him use his powers, but he has to be more tactical and cunning when using them, and it would team him up with characters you don't regularly see him with...or against
This was around the time both Batman and Superman shows began to introduce other heroes from the DC universe, and as a DC fanboy back then I was all in
Doctor Fate is genuinely one of my favorite DC characters. I’m a massive fan of the JSA and he was actually one of the original DC superheroes, along with Hawkman, the Wesley Dodds Sandman, Hourman, the Spectre, the Jay Garrick Flash, the Alan Scott Green Lantern, etc. I highly recommend ANY comics about the Justice Society
The people who were making the DC animation back then, knew what they were doing. I recently started watching Justice League again. And it was just as good as I remembered. I had my expectations lowered because I'd seen it multiple times before. And I thought I was remembering it too highly. But it was just as good as it always was.
Superman TAS is such an interesting show in retrospect because there is a lot of good aspects of the show but 1) the creators weren’t huge Superman fans and 2) it was written during a time where the status quo for the character was the one established by Jon Byrne which only brings the show down. It makes me wonder what the show could have looked like if the writing team were bigger Superman fans and if it was written as an hybrid adaptation of pre-crisis and post-crisis Superman.
3:07 it's one of Superman's weaknesses: magic 9:11 Doctor Fate himself! For some more explorations of the occult side of the DC multiverse in animation... The Batman vs. Dracula (standalone story that's technically an extension of a show called "The Batman") Justice League: Gods and Monsters (very alternate universe type thing) Justice League vs. Teen Titans (part of the DCAMU) Justice League Dark (part of the DCAMU) Constantine: City of Demons (part of the DCAMU) Justice League Dark: Apokolips War (part of the DCAMU) In live-action I feel I should mention both The Sandman and Doom Patrol. Constantine had a short-lived live-action series too, and then that character was incorporated into some seasons of Legends of Tomorrow, but that was part of the Arrowverse, which is a whole other Pandora's Box. Wonder-Woman also obviously inherently comes with supernatural stuff because of her ties to Greek mythology.
Its interesting how they introduce magic to this world by saying our character were already aware on that from previous adventures we didn't see. But what You said about how this world have magic, sci-fi and many other things like that, thats exactly what i really love about comic books. Its not only one type of fantastical, its basicaly every type that there ever was in culture. And yeah, sometimes it turns out rather messy, but i much more like to think about this as possibility to tell many interesting stories. Also, i kinda forgot about the goth girl from this episode, but i love how people interested in occult can just help with those situations because hey, its all real and proven.
Magic is Superman's other weakness besides Kryptonite. And yeah, Dr. Fate has one of those designs that just works. Also, regarding the character themes, there's a compilation video on youtube of a bunch of the hero themes from the DCAU. But it contains spoilers.
I mean, for most of the part, magic is a sort of inconsistent "weakness" that it widely varies on how effective it works on Superman. Sometimes, it easily cripples him. Other times, he can contend with some of the most powerful magical users like Shazam and come out on top. Recently, in the comics, he can take on and keep up with a heavily amped Bizarro who was empowered by all of the most powerful types of magic across the DC multiverse.
My personal favorite depiction of Doctor Fate is from Young Justice, but the character in general is one of my favorites across all depictions. I’m excited for you to get to movies like Justice League: Dark that really put magic based heroes front and center and shows a more occult version of the DC universe not normally present
Fate’s great. He’s also a character that showrunners have chosen to represent radically differently across the two places he has been most featured in animation: the Justice League continuity including S:TAS, and Young Justice. A couple of years from now you can compare and decide which you like more!
Rainsong is the real heroine, pointing Supes in the right direction. Animated debut of Dr. Fate and his wife Inza. I remember being legit scared as a kid when I saw the demon possessions.
Superman's biggest weakness is the writers turning him edgy and evil. That's why we can't get good Superman movies. Also Dr. Fate is one of DC's most underrated characters. He's pretty cool.
If I may make a suggestion, Meg - keep the fully-animated film _Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths_ (2010) on your waiting list until after you've watched _Justice League_ S2E11-12 (the 37th and 38th episodes). The latter work is intrinsically linked with the former, so broaching this _JL_ two-parter episode first may make watching _Crisis on Two Earths_ a more rewarding experience. - Best regards
About Dr Fate, he appears in Justice League (cartoon), Black Adam and in Young Justice. Speaking of Young Justice, after Justice League I would really recommend YJ. It's a love letter to DC! As much as I like Teen Titans, Young Justice is a better cartoon overall.
Superman's powers aren't supernatural like magic is. Though fictional in reality his powers are based on physics. Magic being something beyond the realm of science and physics are one of the few things out there that if it comes from someone or something vastly powerful in said field can actually harm Superman.
Oh, DC does supernatural horror very well. You need to get introduced to John Constantine. Keanu Reeves played a version of him in a movie once, he's been in a few animated movies, and had a short loved TV that is well worth watching.
Hi Meg if you enjoy supernatural maybe give Constantine a watch. I really enjoy your reactions and your thoughts anyway have a wonderful day and looking forward to your next reaction.
Yeah Magic is one of Superman's weaknesses its not cus of Krypton its just that Superman is a very Science and Alien base hero not magic so he is weak against it like everyone else

It’s too bad we never got a true adaptation of the Justice Society in the DCAU. They’re all kinds of awesome
Dr Fate and a few members of the Justice Society were in the film : BLACK ADAM.
DR Fate was in the Justice Society WW2 but it was only a cameo
Superman basically just has no defense from magic, it affects him the same way it would any other mortal. That's one reason why Mr. Mxyzptlk for instance is able to wreak havoc with him. He has other magical villains in the comics, like Silver Banshee, Lord Satanus, and La Encantadora.

Superman has 3 major weaknesses. Kryptonite, Magic, the Sun turning Red.
Yes, definitely! Also, someone in his "weight class"... Doomsday, Zod, (some versions of) Brainiac, etc.

Yes..and its scientific true ..any 1 without magic nature should be affected by magic
I think it’s the sort of thing that magic has few limitations outside of one’s will or strength of mind, so Superman can’t be invulnerable to something that has so few limits
Yay!!! Doctor Fate is one of my favorites! He's basically DC's Doctor Strange

Superman is vulnerable to two things, Kryptonite and magic.
And red solar radiation

Not Meg pondering Smash or Pass on Karkull 🤣💀
Must be the shape

Basically this series sets up everything Justice League and more from now on. Bruce and Clark are intertwined forever
Good old Dr Fate; hope you continue with Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, as he has some great appearances
