In the comics, the origin is more intense, and more closely tied to Superman. It's when Superman is 'killed' by Doomsday, John survives the battle and feels the urge to step in for the fallen hero. He's one of 4 new Supermen, and it's heavily suggested he's somehow channeling Superman's spirit. He's takes on the name Steel after Superman returns, though he still wears a Superman 'S'.
Steel is rad as hell, in the comics he stepped up when the world thought Superman was dead, also he has an awesome red cape that makes him look like a knight in shining armor
Steel was one of the four characters that replaced Superman after his death in 1993, along with Superboy, The Eradicator, and Cyborg (not the one from Teen Titans). So given that Steel was a possible successor to Superman, he was originally called "Man of Steel." It was shortened to just "Steel" once Superman returned. You should definitely read The Death of Superman, World Without a Superman, and The Return of Superman for the full saga. A notable design difference to Steel in the animated series is that they dropped the "S" symbol from his chest (which doesn't always appear) and he's not wearing his signature red cape.
Steel is one of those comic book character's i really wish i knew a bit more about but i didn't really got around to it. But i really love the idea of somebody being inspired by Superman and using engenuity to approximate his powers for good. Also he looks incredibly cool . But to be honest comic book counterpart looks even better because he wears Superman emblem and red cape, i guess for the show they decided to not do that, maybe because in the comic there was specific reason for Steel to emulate Superman this closely and in the context of the show it wouldn't make that much sense I also really love how this episode in particular shows how people in Metropolis stand with Superman, its always nice to see in superhero story
@@MegMageReacts To be more accurate, the Shaq movie IS about the character, but has the 90s comic book movie thing where they basically wanted to both ignore most of the source material AND either couldn't or wouldn't include any of the Superman mythos, so it's really cheap, really cheesy and misses some major points of the character. In the comics, Steel was one of the four Supermen who appeared after the Death of Superman storyline, and the one that Lois thought might actually be him. It was implied that some part of Clark's soul or something similar inhabited John Henry Irons and inspired him to take up the mantle (the gimmick was that each of the four was inspired by one of Supes' nicknames, so John was (the Man of) Steel) but it turned out that nope, he was just a good man inspired by Superman the normal way.
@@gaz-l621 I genuinely wish there was a TON more heroes like Steel, good natured people who only took up being heroes _because_ they were inspired by Superman. Supes being this inspiring symbol of hope and justice is always _stated,_ and demonstrated by how civilians react to him, but it would just be oh so heartwarming to see other people decide "I can be the best version of myself too" in line with what Clark does with the power he has.
I thought it was fun but really silly. It's good dumb entertainment. Also there's a disabled scientist who builds herself a battle wheelchair, who honestly is cooler than Shaq is.
If you can somehow Please watch Disney's "John Henry" (2000) It's pretty short, but an amazing animation of the American folktale that inspired this character.
Steel is one of my favourite DC heroes and such an underrated character who really embodies the spirit and undying will of humanity and resonates with me since I took am black person since Steel is based on the real life hero John Henry the steel railroad engineer. I really like how much Superman respects Steel and everything he does for his community as it shows how much inspiration Superman has had and how much he values everyone

Great reaction! The first volume of the Steel comic from 1994 is a really interesting read. Some things don’t hold up terribly well (like a lot of 90’s media…), but there are some more nuanced conversations about gang violence, corporate interest in minority communities, and vigilantism than I was expecting. Worth a read if you’re curious about the character!
Before voicing Metallo in Superman TAS and JLU, Malcolm McDowell voiced Abraham Whistler (Blade's mentor) in Spider-Man TAS. Also another great 90s animated series you should watch if you haven't already.
Superman: based on Moses who went to the promised land. Steel: based on John Henry, who was promised land by the US government, after he was freed from slavery.
'Metallo' is the alloy Metallo is made out of. Not the most creatively named comic book metal I'll grant you, but it does mean Metallo is correct in his 'meeting of the metals' and 'may the best alloy win' lines
Steel doesn't get much screentime in the DCAU, but he does have one of my favorite lines in the Justice League Unlimited series, where he disses a certain DC villain. Those who've seen it probably know the line I'm talking about, but I won't spoil it for Meg or anyone who hasn't.
Steel is a great character. Watch The Death of Superman and The Reign of the Supermen for more of him. DO NOT WATCH THE LIVE ACTION STEEL MOVIE. Please!!!!!!
Basically Steel was the answer to Ironman except he’s a working class man instead of a billionaire. You’ll come to see many of Superman characters are in someway a reflection of marvel characters.
It was great that they adapted Steel for STAS. He is one of the best characters from the Death and Return of Superman saga. It's a good thing that STAS didn't adapt this saga as well. And it's also a good thing that BTAS didn't adapt Knightfall. Both are very bad and dated sagas.
IT'S THE EARRING GUY!!
Yeah, that guy!!
Meg, search John Henry, the folk hero that inspired this character.

A slightly different version of Steel is also a recurring character in the CW's live action "Superman and Lois."
Oh,man,I LOVE Superman and Lois what a-GREAT-show.Gonna miss CW's super-hero live action tv shows.
"Metallo? How did I not know it was you?"
I'm wondering that too. Malcolm McDowell has a VERY distinctive voice.
i didn't remember the details of this episode so when i heard him i was like, Metallo?
"I don't do grunt work" how did I not know? LOL
Steel is rad as hell, in the comics he stepped up when the world thought Superman was dead, also he has an awesome red cape that makes him look like a knight in shining armor
Underrated hero in DC. Love Steel.
7:40 "metallo" is an _alloy_ that Luther invented to make his robot body, the same way steel is an alloy of iron and carbon.
Steel was, is, and always will be one of my favorite D.C. characters, I saw this episode when I was a kid and loved it.

The voice actor is Michael Dorn. He plays Worf on Star Trek:TNG and Deep Space 9.
Every day that Meg posts a Superman reaction is a great day
Does Iron-Man have a hammer? No he doesn't.
Iron Man liked to get hammered. :O
Steel has his own live action movie and a few appearances in direct to DVD films he's a solid part of the Superman family but rarely in his own show.
