    Gosh I respect this show so much. Unlike a lot of cartoons of the time, it actually showed real depth to its villians. Harvey is such a tragic tale of mental illness. It deals with that subject better than a lot of "adult" shows.

      That they were willing to go into this kind of detail on a complex topic like mental illness at all is proof of this show's commitment, while at the same time keeping it understandable.

    In most versions Harvey is scared by having acid thrown in his face in while in court. This take is different but it still works very well. All versions definitely lean into the Harvey was already suffering severe mental problems before the scarring unleashed his darker side.

    It’s cool that you noticed that Batman actually puts effort on trying to instill fear unto the villains. He doesn’t just go and beat em’ up, he really puts quick planing and effort on his acting skills to bring the fearsome legend of the Batman alive by using his surroundings, skills, tech, and lighting to make himself look supernatural.

    Episodes like this are why this is the definitive version of Batman for me. It's not just about fighting crime for Bruce, it's about helping others the way others helped him when he was at his lowest.

      I think that's what makes Batman's villains the best. Like, Superman has two good villains (in my opinion), Brainiac and Lex Luthor. Brainiac uses brain power against Superman's physical strength, and Luthor has vast public influence against Superman's rathwr private existence.
      Meanwhile, every one of Batman's villains in one way or another, is a reflection of Batman himself. Or Bruce Wayne.
      Joker is both chaos and comedy, contrasted against Batman's seriousness and control. Ivy is disdain for humanity paired with extreme environmentalism, whereas Bruce has to balance his humanitarianism and philanthropy against being the owner of a multi-billion dollar corporation. Scarecrow uses his ability to instill fear to bully and cow those he sees as his inferiors, Batman uses fear to weaken and disarm hardened criminals who haven't known fear for a long time.
      And, lastly, both Harvey and Batman stand on a knife edge between sanity and madness. When Harvey slips, Bruce gets to see firsthand what could happen if he does the same.

    “The Law! Here’s the only law. The Law that averages. The great equaliser”.
    That’s one of my favourite quotes of the series. This is also one of my absolute favourite episodes of the series. I consider it a masterpiece, I love that it explores Harvey’s psyche and struggle with his anger and his alternate personality. Harvey was a good man and to have his life ruined is sad and tragic. Richard Moll who voiced Harvey/Big Bad Harv/Two-Face did a phenomenal job as well.

And I love the dream scene where you know Bruce feels so much guilt for not being able to save him and it traumatizes him so much that it reminds him of probably his biggest trauma, his parents' death. Like it honestly made me feel emotional when I first watched this. Also Meg Idk if you saw it but during the scene when the psychiatrist is asking to see his other personality, when the lightning flashes you see his half scarred face for a split second. Two-Face is just another tragic example of suffering from DID.
    The Animated Series always knew how to tell a story man.

    • @Swenglish
      @Swenglish Год назад +4

      It's sadly a wildly inaccurate portrayal of DID and one that plays into very damaging stereotypes (as having an "evil/dangerous half", which is not how it works at all - alters are not monsters). They don't call it DID in the show, but it's muddy enough to be problematic (the words "Multiple Personalities" are in Batman's book, which is a direct reference to MPD, which was an older diagnosis for DID). It's a well told story, but it's miseducation.

    • @TheChickenlittle11
      @TheChickenlittle11 8 месяцев назад

      @@Swenglishbut it still could fit as DID usually happens to kids who suffered trauma. And that since Harvey repressed his anger for so long that Big Bad Harv is the manifestation of his repressed anger that was formed into an Alter. Of course there are times in the show where like you said the representation of DID isn’t accurate since from my recollection is that the Primary and an Alter can’t be “in the light” at the same time as it usually happens in the show where we can hear Two-Face speak and then a split second later we hear in Harvey’s voice. As well as that in the show they never show the physical “switch” when someone leaves “the light” and another enters it.

    • @Swenglish
      @Swenglish 8 месяцев назад

      @@TheChickenlittle11 A lot of wrong in that comment. Okay...for starters...
      You're getting your terminology from movies and TV shows. I think "in the light" might be from Split (which is also terribly misleading and enforces negative and untrue stereotypes by blurring the line between DID and demonic possession myths without clarifying the separation), a more commonly used term being "in front" or "fronting", if not simply "in control". "Primary" sounds like maybe you got it from Doom Patrol (which is much better, but did not use common terminology). Secondly, a host (what you call "primary") *is* an alter. It's just the alter fronting the most for any given period of time (which can shift as life situations change). Thirdly, co-consciousness (when two alters share the front or one is fronting while another is "in the backseat") is absolutely possible, as is blending (which is when the separation between alters becomes temporarily fuzzy). Fusion is when two or more alters become so integrated that they merge into one new alter, which is not the same as blending and can be a sign of healing (although trying to force it when the trauma is still unprocessed can have negative side effects).
      Oh, and it's not just that DID *can* happen from childhood trauma; there is no indication that it can happen *without* childhood trauma. It appears to only form in childhood, from prolonged or repeated trauma over a period of time (along with a couple of other factors). Although similar symptoms can occur (individually) from other causes. I believe I've heard of cases of brain damage leading to separate identity states in adults, for example, but that doesn't meet the diagnostic criteria for DID, and doesn't seem to work the same way.
      The problem with how "multiple personalities" is presented in Two-Face is that it seems to turn him from a good guy into a bad guy. That's the problematic stereotype. DID doesn't turn people into villains. People with DID are more likely to be victims of continuing abuse than perpetrators of it, and angry alters are more likely to direct their aggression toward their own system than toward others.

      @dikastederook6380 7 месяцев назад

      @@Swenglish In all honesty, it was done in the 90s. I honestly don't understand people being surprised at how these years were full of ignorance and inaccuracies about a lot of sensitive issues. And I don't see why we shouldn't love this anymore (that's not what you said here but some people do).

    • @Swenglish
      @Swenglish 7 месяцев назад

      @@dikastederook6380 I don't think anyone is surprised. The observation, rather, is that it's sad how predictable it is. I'm honestly surprised when I see DID - or any kind of mental health issue or neurological condition - presented accurately and responsibly, even in contemporary media, but especially in older things. Ignorance is the default, and one reason why people are so misinformed is because of all the stories that get this stuff wrong. The uninformed portrayal becomes a trope, which becomes a cliché, which becomes a widely believed stereotype, which has real world impact, and yes, we can appreciate and even love these works, but acknowledging at the same time what they get wrong is one way of combatting those harmful stereotypes. The best antidote to misinformation is information. I love this show, and I think this is a very well done and engaging episode, but I can simultaneously have those positive feelings about it and point out that it is problematic in its handling of sensitive subject matter, especially when someone comments that it's "just another tragic example of suffering from DID".

    8:29 actually a very good observation, but there is 1 big difference between Harvey and batman. Probably one of my favourite two parter episodes of btas, seeing the duality of Harvey/Two-face, like you mentioned also the duality of Bruce and Batman,how similar they are but went down different paths. It's also one of the few episodes that touches on mental health issues, which is relatable to life and for a kids cartoon, shows the quality of the writing, not to play down to the audience, which puts this series ahead of its time.

    In many ways harvey is like the hulk. Each personality is reflective of his internal fight for control of himself. Each brings their own way they do or see things. When that personality is in control you can even see a physical change in his demeanor. The same happens to the hulk depending on the personality in control. You will see more of this later on with two face though some of the sides he reveals are not quite as well used as others.

    This show, and in fact a lot of the DCAU, goes to some surprisingly dark places for what are ultimately kids shows. They go into death, loss, grief, as one would expect in a Batman story, but I’ve always said the original BTAS is like Avatar the Last Airbender for 90s kids; the same inner look at peace versus justice versus vengeance versus violence, but applied to an older, still American-optimistic worldview. It also coincides with Harvey's "rehabilitation" but there's a parallel because Harvey now sees himself as totally consumed by his dark side; it was irresistible just as the Batman persona was irresistible to Bruce. When Harvey asks Batman what he sees when he takes the bandages off, he says "I see a reflection".

    THis is the life long debate (and there’s even an episode exploring this theory) that Batman created his villains that Batman pushed them to the limit of craziness, this also explains in a way why batman don’t kill, hes compassionate he truly believes he can help n rescue his villians

    Since people have been asking, this is the watch order she has been given. It guarantees that she won’t be spoiled. She has also been given a separate DC movie list which includes every single DC animated movie and when she can watch them. It ultimately though is up to Meg and what journey she wants to go in:
    She might not watch them in this exact order. I’ve given her advice, but it’s again ultimately her decision to make.
    She has also been given more specific advice in the Discord.
    Batman and Superman The Animated Series (Season 1)
    Batman Mask of Phantasm
    Batman and Superman (Season 2)
    Green Lantern First Flight
    Batman and Superman The Animated Series (Season 3)
    Batman & Mr Freeze Sub Zero
    Batman Mystery of the Batwoman
    Wonder Woman (2009)
    Justice League and Batman Beyond (Season 1)
    Justice League and Batman Beyond (Season 2)
    Batman Beyond (Season 3) & Static Shock (Season 1)
    Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
    Green Lantern the Animated Series (Season 1) and Static Shock (Season 2)
    Static Shock (Season 3) & Teen Titans (Season 1)
    Justice League Unlimited (All Episodes) & Teen Titans (Season 2-6) & Harley Quinn (Seasons 1-3)
    Then after that you’d kind of be free to explore whatever you want from the list. This would allow you to not be spoiled but also mix things up so you’re not just focused on one character or one series.

    Girl,.....the bullets either would have killed Dent, or done what they did....to say nothing of the futility of....guessing where bullets MIGHT have gone....from a sloppy Tommy gun spray. Plus, Harvey didn't see any of what happened....he was a mile away running away from the gunfire, then dove to the ground when Batman told him to. Never...blame the hero when you have villains that orchestrated 90% of the scenario.

    • @MegMage

      Speaking from the POV of Batman. He clearly feels guilt for a part of it, even if it isn't his fault. And thinking this way better understands our *FLAWED* protagonists. Never blaming a hero is a very simple way of thinking.

    A really awesome and funny standalone movie to checkout is Batman vs TMNT! It's based on a crossover series where Batman meets and teams up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and it's a perfect blend of the worlds/atmosphere of both comic universes, neither one outshines the other! 😎 Plus it's never a bad thing to gain interest in the Turtles as well! lol

    One of the all-time greats, another production I feel improved on the original comic story. Like the Dark Knight film, nearly anyone can empathize and feel for Dent as he struggles with his darkness, an anger only fanned by the high stress of being Gotham's DA against a crime boss who will use ANY dirty trick to control the authorities and bend them to his will. Also an indictment of the way many act towards those suffering from mental health issues; Harvey knew he would lose votes if the truth ever came out that he was seeing a psychiatrist.
    Richard Moll's Two-Face voice is probably my all-time favorite vocal performance in this show. Recommended episode: Almost Got 'Im

    I really like these episodes but they probably can't make into my top 10 from this show. That's how good the show is. But i think later DCAU shows like Justice League and Justice League Unlimited are more consistent with their quality. There are few Batman The Animated Series episodes that i could call "bad" but i don't there is a "bad" Justice League episode. But you have to stick to the order. Superman The Animated Series has few crossover episodes with Batman so you should watch that after classic Batman The Animated Series. After first two seasons of Superman you could continue with The New Batman Adventures. Don't try watching the Justice League show without first watching Superman the Animated Series and don't try watching Justice League Unlimited without watching all of the other shows and movies. I prefer watching Batman Beyond before Justice League but i could understand people saying you should watch it after Justice League. You must see it before Justice League Unlimited.
    I would love to see book talk videos about comics. I want to recommend two Batman comics based on things you said in this video. Batman Ego and Batman Long Halloween. Long Halloween would be a great choice to follow up Batman Year One. Batman Ego is really short but i think it is the best look into who Batman is for me.

      JL and JLU has some of my favorite moments and episodes of the DCAU. It has great characters, even some that seem shallow at first like Booster Gold and the Justice Guild of America.
      And the relationships between characters is fantastic, like Shayera and Solomon Grundy or Bruce and Ace. Such complex and heartfelt scenes that feel small and genuine.
      When it comes to story for comic book characters few can match the consistent quality of the DCAU.

    Lol in other versions, Two-Face's scaring can also be green or purple. Red is more realistic, sure, but why not go for a more stylized look? Who cares about realism anyway? The main character is a billionaire who dresses like a bat and beats up on the criminally-insane.

    Why do people use subtitles, I hate it. What is the point, obviously if you don’t speak the language or if you can’t hear but besides that I have no clue. It takes away from the experience and it’s simply a unnecessary distraction

    • @foxisconfused
      @foxisconfused 4 месяца назад

      @bossisin2510 some people (like me) have adhd and need subtitles to be able to process what they're hearing properly, some people are hard of hearing, some people just prefer to be able to see exactly what every character is saying. there's nothing wrong with disliking them, but i think it's more important to cater toward the people who actually need subtitles than the people who dislike them just because they find them annoying/distracting

    • @bossisin2510
      @bossisin2510 4 месяца назад

      @@foxisconfused I don’t “find them distracting” they are distracting. It’s a visual medium. Half of the story(if it’s good) is being portrayed through the shots/animation. If someone is hard of hearing, they can turn it up, I have ADHD but I worked on it… in very rare cases do people need subtitles with everything you watch. It’s unlikely that this is one of those cases
