decided to learn Dutch today from nowhere! hahaha I'm learning german since a year and i love how similar they are! I still need to wiki the story of Dutch to understand this better but so far i'm enjoying a lot!
You can do it! :)
Well they are similar but not the same! There are many false friends, words in German and in dutch that look alike - spelled (almost) the same, sounding (almost) the same, sometimes even written and pronounced the same! And yes, sometimes they mean the same too... but very often they don't and actually have a very different meaning!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 ik ook
Did you learn it?
I still think Dutch is closer to English..
I had to write it out to understand the rules with short vs. long vowel.
For a word with 2 syllables, if the syllable ends in a consonant it's pronounced short. If the syllable ends in a vowel it's pronounced long (even if it's written short).
Schappen and Schapen both have short vowels and sound really similar except for the p / pp. The differentiation between the two is not on the pronunciation of the p but on the a.
Schappen: Schap ends on a consonant = Short [ Schap | pen ]
Shapen: Sha ends on a vowel = Long [ Schaa | pen ]
Thank you for providing such a clear video explaining this (and free), you're a great teacher!
I'm really glad it was helpful Jordan!
The Dutch alphabet is similar to Indonesian, because the Indonesian language is heavily influenced by Dutch during colonisation.
The pronunciation of letters almost all are the same. And also the F and V are the same in Indonesian. 30% of the words are the same as Indonesian..
cool

Yesterday I had a online intraction with Netherlands students.
I became inspired to learn Dutch.
That's great!
You are an amazing instructor and facilitator. The videos are extremely well explained and comprehensive. Please make more of them!
I am struggling to learn basics of Dutch ! Your video is quite helpful.
The alphabet pronunciation is definitely the same with Indonesian except for "J" and "Y", in Indonesian Y pronounced exactly the same with Dutch J while the Indonesian J is the same with English J
Great! That's exactly what I was looking for! I am passionate about learning languages and started today with Dutch. I already speak 9 languages, and Dutch will be my 10th.
I am an Indian ...fell In love with frenkie de Jong ....man guys so good❤️💙
Dutch is a beautiful language.
eekhoorn meaning squirrel is such a cute false cognate! I wonder what dutch for acorn is?
Acorn is "eikel" in dutch. Be careful in using the word eikel though, because it can have a different meaning too which is rather insulting if you say it to someone!
Thank you for the video... I have passed the immigration exam already but wanna improve my pronunciation... this video is really helpful
Dank je wel, Koen! I'm going to the Netherlands in 2021 January, in Wageningen, to study! and I'm trying hard to learn a little o Dutch.. It's a beautiful language.. houd het goede werk! tot ziens!

Finally find the right video for my goal. Thank you so much.
8:26 In 2020 werd PANNENKOEK ook met een tussen-N geschreven. Als het eerste deel van het nominatief alleen een meervoud heeft op -en en niet (ook) een meervoud op -es, schrijf je een tussen-n in de samenstellingen met dat eerste deel. Daarom is het GROENTETAART omdat het meervoud van GROENTE zowel GROENTEN als GROENTES is. Maar het meervoud van PAN is niet PANNES, dus dan toch maar een tussen-N.
Sound similar in Bahasa (Indonesian Languange)
omg! the alphabet sound it's familiar like Indonesian alphabet ʕ´•ᴥ•`ʔ

I find it highly amusing that eekhoorn means squirrel since it sounds almost exactly like acorn.

The pronunciation of the alphabet is really similar with Indonesian language. It is no doubt that Indonesia used to be colonized by Netherlands, but still it makes me aghast haha
Fantastic video!
Great content, thanks!

"u" like in "yoghurt" sounds different than the other two ("kus"/"luxe" and "vuur")

Dankje

Indonesian and Dutch have similar alphabet
Is dutch and flamming the same language?
Sounds like a combo of Swedish and Vietnamese. I should know ‘cause I speak both languages
Swedish is very similar to English and Dutch

Thank youuuu
hi! i have a doubt about the letter r, I've seen that in some words you pronounce it like rr (the hard way) and others you pronounce it something similar to the French r. so i wanted to know how I can recognize and know how to pronounce it. hope that you answer! :)
I think it has to do with his accent, and I think it doesn't matter very much how you pronounce it.
Yes it has to do with my accent. People from the south part of the Netherlands have a softer pronunciation! And sorry for the late response Ornella! :)
Danku!
This video is so heccin useful! Thanks a lot for it! -ui sound keeps destroying me but I just say it with confidence so I can get away with it.
That reminds me it would be cool a video to cover Dutch diphtongs. aa, ee, oo, uu, ij, ui, ei...
Edit: Nvm, you said it at the end of the video ahaha
Happy to hear that Jeff! Haha nice you've seen it already.
Similar too French
thank you so muchh
The new pronunciations in Duolingo drop the N at the end of the words the end with "en" (so mostly plurals). So like "kleren", "honden" sound like "klere", "honde" etc. Is that a thing or is it just Duolingo being weird?
I noticed the same thing. I think it depends on the accent. Idk. 😄
It's quite common for certain dialects to drop/aspirate the N's at the end of words, I've noticed that a lot of native speakers tend to do it in the Nederlands and sometimes it can be used against non natives and quite telling that you aren't native in my experience with people I know.
With the exception of north-eastern dialects, everybody drops the N in spoken Dutch. In the north-east they drop the E and pronounce the N. So kler'n in stead of klere.
gretig is eager, and NOT greedy..
Anyone knows how to type those symbols?
Thank you 😊
You're welcome! :)
Waarom kijk ik dit eigenlijk, ik ben Nederlands
Thank you and subscribed ;)
Omg why is it so difficult 😭😭
I'm confused about Y. Did you say its also called Greikse Y as in Greek Y? I was googling and came across some resources that said that IJ is a letter and Y is not?
Y is pronounced either eegrek or ee. Eegrek is also the French pronunciation of y too if that helps. Hope this makes sense.
Thanks for such a nice clear vedio kindly inbox me i want to know more about .
I found out how to pronounce the word “Schiphol” when arriving in Amsterdam
Was that a brabants accent I heared?
it's a bit simmiar to the german alphabet because some of them are pronounced the same as German.
😇
Dank u wel. I heb inburgering examen, heb heb u advise voor me?
Hoi! Succes met het examen. Probeer eens wat Nederlandse nieuwsberichten te lezen en te begrijpen, dit helpt vaak bij het leren van een taal!
