Bart, thank you so much for this lesson. You are absolutely right in saying that beginners must learn first to pronounce the alphabet. I really like the idea of turning down the volume of the music while you are pronouncing the letters and / or phrases. Maybe, you should give a 5 seconds more for the students to repeat the words on the exercise given by you. Great work!
About the letter 'g': the southern part of the Netherlands (Noord-Brabant and Limburg) pronounce it higher in the throat, resulting in a soft g. The ''zachte g'' is something you'll hear a lot if you plan on going south of the Rhine river, and it's a way of recognizing southern-born Dutch, so you might as well remember the difference. Also because nearly all Brabanders make fun of people who use the throaty hard 'g', all in good fun of course ;)
I am Indonesian who have been living in Iceland for the last 20 years and travel to The Netherland quite often, I notice there are many similarities in Indonesian, Icelandic and Dutch language, only different on how they are pronounced. Interesting 👍

Ich denke, die Aussprache des holländischen Klanges 'g' /'ch' mit dem Aussprache des Klanges von Wörter wie „Dach“, „hoch“, „durch“ usw. (beziehungsweise, a/o/u + ch) vergleichbar ist. Ich bin selbst nicht sicher und entschuldige mich, ob es viele Fehler gibt 👀

Actually it's the other way around. German English and Dutch come from the same language Dutch is the most conservative of the tree and sounds the most like the original language West Germanic language.
+nok nittaya duolingo is an app for learning languages. it works like a kind of little game losing and earning "hearts" when you answer incorrectly or correctly. it's nice, but sometimes you get fed up with few useless sentences they give, but you can have a taste of building sentences if you keep on. :)
I am glad that these simple resources have been available on the internet for so long, because when I was in 2014 I was 7 or 8 years old, and obviously at that age I had no interest in language learning.
I was so happy because it's mostly a mix of pronunciations from languages that I already know... and then I got to the g 😭😭 how the hell does one make that sound

Thank you very much! It’s a great challenge for “g”, “ch”, “sch” and all other combinations of vowels/consonants, especially when there are too many of them in one word like achtentachtig. I hope there are videos showing how to say words like this in a more natural way, since I struggle to stress “ch” in every single syllable, and I cannot say the whole word smoothly and naturally.

I have a question about the ij. Like in rijden or vrijheid. I noticed some speakers pronounce it like "ei" (as in the video). However others pronounce it more like "ai". Are both pronounciations correct and those are just different accents? Thanks!
CraZy291 it depends on the location. And, moreover, Belgians have a different pronounciation also. Most of them use ai. Bijna [ baina ] . And most of the Dutch people say also ai. But that nds on the words too....but while boh are correct, you can simply adspt yourself to the other person
"g" as "kh" is not so unusual if you know Georgian lenguage they have too many rough pronounciation as its "ხ" like "g" in Dutch and many others :D thanx for video it is very helpfull for self learning
Hi Bart. I have a question regarding pronounciation of "g". It doesn't say here why sometimes we say it as this rough sound like in "gesloten" and sometimes it's just "g" like in "jongen". One of my friend told me that when it's the ending "-gen" it will be always non-rough sound (like GroninGEN). But again "morGEN" is pronounced in a rough way. And the pronounciation of "ij". Is it "ey" or "ay" because in Rotterdam I have impression they say it as "ay". Hope you could clear it out for me:)
Barbara Madera ''ng'' is a completely different sound from just ''g''. ''ng'' is pronounced exactly the same as ''ng'' in the english word ''dancing''. I hope that was helpful, do you get it now? :D

Barbara Madera ''ng'' is a completely different sound from just ''g''. ''ng'' is pronounced exactly the same as ''ng'' in the english word ''dancing''. I hope that was helpful, do you get it now? :D
Barbara Madera ''ng'' has its own sound. Thats why in ''jongen'' you dont here a ''g'' but in ''morgen'' you do here a ''g'', because ''morgen'' doesn't have ''ng'' in it. It's weird to try to explain this lol, do you get it now? And about ''ij'', you need to just listen to the audio in this video because there's no way of explaining the sound. And yes, different parts of Netherlands have different pronunciation.
I have a new nemesis: "g" At best I can only naturally say this in a way that sounds like the German "ch". But I hope it's good enough if I can make some kind of a distinction between "g/ch" and "h" when I talk. Everything else is cool though.

Its kind if easy when u know english and german...finally the years of learning german help for something i mean its different but u kinda know how to say things and im bulgarian so i already can say most of the sounds
We are learning German at school, and it is quite easy because we live in The Netherlands :D
Great work!
thank you so much and i'm so happy found this amazing acc! i'm indonesian, really interested to learn dutch. Terimakasih
best of the best tutorial work! teacher bart deserve more life.
I am moving to NET in 6 weeks, so I have been studying the Dutch language quite a lot. This is video is VERY helpful and I intend to watch all of your lessons. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am grateful. Thank you!
Brilliant!!.Been learnig German for about 15 years,if I can learn the vowel and consonant combinations I might be able to guess the meaning of some Dutch words.
I am really struggling with the letter G. I've tried using CH as in lock, but it is a very difficult letter to pronounce. It would be great to have a video for this letter.
Start to make a K, hold your tongue against your palate . Then allow a little air to to pass between your tongue (still in the position to produce a K) and your palate. Practise :)
Try to hiss like a cat.
Great video once again. I am currently actively learning Dutch and I would like to take an official exam in the near future. I have been trying to book an exam in the UK , however I do not have any issues travelling to the Netherlands if necessary. If anyone here could help me find an easy way to book an official exam to track my progress then I will be forever grateful.
This is amazing I really like it but can you please do some lessons that can teach us how to connect the sentences. Thank you so much for the beautiful lesson
Nazra Haybe Hi Naza, glad you like the lessons. I am working together with an other teacher on a course in which this will be explained. But we are still in the beginning of working it out. Follow us, and you will be informed when it will be available.

I am fluent in Afrikaans, which is based mostly on Dutch, yet there is so much to learn. Thank you so much for this Bart
The pronunciación of the letters in Dutch is pretty similar to the pronunciation we have in Spanish (Español/Spanish/Spaans)
I know both the languages have a trilling 'R'.
@@inferiorinferno8859 Which is fucking impossible for me to pronounce lmao

If your looking for tips on pronunciation in the comments here's one:
While pronouncing the "G" in dutch don't over do it. Try to make it sound gentle.
You haven't been to Groningen, have you bud?
@@notyetactive Haha, guess not.
There's nothing wrong with the soft g
but when i try it just come sout as gghghhhghhghghg
the actual pro tip is that you should choke on some food to pronounce it correctly
Love it! Finally some real linguistical approach to teach Dutch!
Dankjewel van Rusland! Will you make a video with comparison of Afrikaans and Dutch languages? It would be cool!
that's the best explanation for dutch alphabet! Thank you so much! You made my life easier
I got really interested on Dutch after this lesson. It's quit easy for me as a portuguese speaker. Also, it has a lot of similar sounds of many other languages (Didn't mean it in a bad conotation, just to be clear). Pretty good content overall! Nice job!
estava pensando a mesma coisa enquanto assistia kkkkkk tem muitos sons parecidos com português mesmo
I have moved to Rotterdam and am just beginning my study, this video is useful.
1:17 the pronunciation of the alphabet begins
I am now in my golden years and i find your website very informative and i strongly commend you sir... English is my native tongue but i am open to learning a foreign language. I do expect i have to start from scratch in order to be proficient. Once again i thank you for today's lesson. It reminds me of my schooldays --ABC
Its kinda easy if u start with speaking indonesian👌
I can speak bahasa, chinese, english but why did I still find it hard to speak the g... :(
Sure😂
Bahasa Belanda sejak lahir kita udah di indoktrinasi bahasa penjajah.
Kita kita jadi auto benci..
Padahal pengucapannya 70-80% sama persis dengan alphabet kita.
Eh, kitanya malah lebih gampang English
I can speak Chinese it’s kinda close to Indonesia right? But I still struggle your lucky cuz this 你好 compared to this hallo is... well you already know what mean XD and good luck with your learning
Oof I forgot to add a i in between the what and the mean so here it is what I mean XD sorry
I’m looking forward to learning Dutch again and hopefully I’m giving myself 3 months to understand it and speaking moderately and by 6 months to be speaking confidently and reading and writing!and be able to read adult books like novels. I was born here in the Netherlands and I’m now learning again I can’t believe I forgotten how to speak this beautiful language 😭😭😭😭.
I think I'll get a sore throat from the letter "g". I thought this letter has the same pronunciation like our German letter "ch" ... but I think it's more a mix between a German "r" and "ch" ..
I don't get it ...😥
And I love it how you say "letterrrr" 😍
Maja Konna Also ich find das ist garnicht so schwer auszusprechen :o
Ich denke, die Aussprache des holländischen Klanges 'g' /'ch' mit dem Aussprache des Klanges von Wörter wie „Dach“, „hoch“, „durch“ usw. (beziehungsweise, a/o/u + ch) vergleichbar ist. Ich bin selbst nicht sicher und entschuldige mich, ob es viele Fehler gibt 👀
Maja Konna But g can be pronounced as ‘ch’, but also harder

I don't have any problem in pronouncing the 'g' thanks god. because I am arab and we have these kind of pronunciations in arabic. so it's very easy for me. I think who knows arabic can speak and pronounce vero easly any language.
Yes, I don't have any problem to pronounce the g either! Well, I'm not arab but I'm a spanish native speaker and we both have a few similarities in our languages :D
+Carol Arciniega oh yes I know
Carol Arciniega im Dutch and im learning spanish and its super easy for me especially pronounciating with which ive seen Americans struggle with it like its impossible
That's what I think about both Spanish and Portuguese. They're way easier languages to learn.

Excelent explanation! I started learning Dutch, but I gave up. However, I began studying again.
Thanks!
hallo! dank u for this video, it really helps a lot. honestly i'm half belgian. my dad is a belgian but i'm just learning dutch and i'm already 15 yrs old. maybe because my family lived in the philippines and i grew up here. anyway, i want to learn dutch, and i won't stop till i learn it :)
i'll start with this and enhance my speaking skills with my father.
although one thing i'm still confused about is the pronunciation of "g". but this helped me very much. thanks again! :)
tomorrowxtuduro global shooky Did you learn it haha
You help me a lot to brush up my dutch since i majored in dutch language at university and since then never use the language and never find a partner who can speak dutch .is there anyone who would like to practice your dutch with me. I am not a native but i can speak it well.no matter where you are from, i'd appreciate it
I found most of dutch words from this video similar to english and german ones, like they are combined from english and german.
Actually it's the other way around. German English and Dutch come from the same language Dutch is the most conservative of the tree and sounds the most like the original language West Germanic language.
@@dipearbore9149 Hi
Like middle high german (mhg) of the indogermanic
This goes into historic linguistic I think?
I'm a beginner, this language is so amazing! I keep learning it.
Thank you so much but it might take long time to learn Dutch.
I have no any basics of Dutch before. This my first time to learn Dutch.
+nok nittaya Hi, I suggest you to try duolingo and come back here to learn about pronunciation, like Im doing right now :D. good luck
+Tony StarK what is the duolingo? I mean what is the way you do?
Put your tongue in the end of ur mouth like you gargle ... I'm Belgian (also Dutch but another pronunciations sometimes) so I can't do it either .. I have a soft g pronunciation, and that's the one that they can't pronounce so It's a 50-50 xd
Isabella Maria it’s like in Russian the hard х sound it’s fun
a bit late to the party but i've been told that it's like lightly clearing your throat
I'm Mexican learning Dutch so that part is kinda easy-ish, lucky me xD
You need to grunt like you have something stuck to your throat, but make it a letter.
Thank you sir this is a very big help for me to watch your video
The letter "J" , pronounced "Yay", like in "YEEEEEEET"
funny
Why in f*cking Grand Line are you learning Dutch while you should be kicking Kaido’s ass rn ?
Thank you very much! It’s a great challenge for “g”, “ch”, “sch” and all other combinations of vowels/consonants, especially when there are too many of them in one word like achtentachtig.
I hope there are videos showing how to say words like this in a more natural way, since I struggle to stress “ch” in every single syllable, and I cannot say the whole word smoothly and naturally.
Lol waarom kijk hiernaar ik ben Nederlands!
lol i understood that and im German :O
Ja ik ook ahahha

I’m leaving here in Netherlands,And i really want to learn Dutch language. For now I’m starting watching your videos,My husband teaching me some basics dutch,But it was really difficult especially the pronunciations!😕
I have a question about the ij. Like in rijden or vrijheid. I noticed some speakers pronounce it like "ei" (as in the video). However others pronounce it more like "ai". Are both pronounciations correct and those are just different accents? Thanks!
Yes some accents pronounce it more as ai
Thanks, that's good to know. I wonder which accent I should adopt as a non-native speaker.
CraZy291 it depends on the location. And, moreover, Belgians have a different pronounciation also. Most of them use ai. Bijna [ baina ] . And most of the Dutch people say also ai. But that nds on the words too....but while boh are correct, you can simply adspt yourself to the other person
Actually, in Belgium the ei/ij is pronounced as a monophthong, like /ɛː/ similar to British "square". You will not hear an "ai".
@@Yatalu Exactly! As a Belgian I was confused at the other person saying we say it like "ai" 😂
As a portuguese speaker I found this easier than anticipated.
Very good and useful! Where is the written version of this lesson?
i will rewatch this and take notes.. thanks im gonna start dutch and im so excited about my 5th language
"g" as "kh" is not so unusual if you know Georgian lenguage they have too many rough pronounciation as its "ხ" like "g" in Dutch and many others :D thanx for video it is very helpfull for self learning
You can actually pronounce Dutch g like ღ in ღარიბი and ch like ხ in ჯოხი, according to what I've read :3
Ik vind het een hele goed idee,om nederlandse les zo te leren op internet.nog bedankt voor alles uit te legen in het eenvoudige manier.

DBDennisvdG No I don't bcs I ask about "gen" not "ng" :)
This has been the most helpful piece of information I've found so far. Thank you.

I have been watching this video again and again. One of the most helpful information online. Can't thank you enough!
I have a new nemesis: "g"
At best I can only naturally say this in a way that sounds like the German "ch". But I hope it's good enough if I can make some kind of a distinction between "g/ch" and "h" when I talk.
Everything else is cool though.
It's the same sound as the 'ch' in the German word 'Ach', maybe that helps :)
Try saying schreeuw or worse yet " van Gogh".
This is extremely very helpful....I was learning dutch by using Ling app and I thought about first how to pronounce alphabet correcty, this video was very helpful and now after watching and taking notes as well I feel comfortable in prounouncing dutch words. True! Whenever I learn a language, I like to know first the alphabet and how to read the language. Then learning becomes a lot easier.
I would guess you don't often look into the comments two years later, but do you have any advice regarding the difference in the au/ou and eu diphthongs? I try to pronounce them, but not only do I find it impossible to properly say eu, I cannot even hear the difference
i'm working on extra pronunciation videos, including this
Max Painter au you say with your mouth more open and eu you say more with pouted lips
The eu diphthong , as in keuken, is unique to the Dutch language, and indispensable. Like ui, and ou; they are pronounced by first puckering the lips.
Great class, but I wish you'd spent more time on -ui/uy, which to me seems the most difficult of all Dutch sounds.
You should remove background sound
ben ik niet gedaan!
Your lessons are really great!
