    I love your daughter's work boxes. I have seen other homeschoolers speak about this method but the way you explained it in your video makes a lot of sense. I think we will try this method.

    Hello Erika I will love to see how you save all the finish work. I live everything inside the books because I have no idea how to reorganized all the single pages after they are done with the work. but it is hard for the kids to work front the books. please make a video to show us any ideas you have mastered.... xoxo:-)

      We currently store their completed/graded work in a file which I randomly clean out throughout the year as it gets full. I do NOT keep their work past the end of the year as it's not required by my state. But you'll want to see what's required for your area. We do keep special art projects, or stories they've written that are special to them. Otherwise it goes in the recycle bin :)
      As far as working from a book, we just put a sticky note flag on the page their on and move it back as they work through the book. We do that for some subjects, and I pull out worksheets for some, it kind of depends.

    • @meandmybirdsnest1583
      @meandmybirdsnest1583 7 лет назад

      thank you for replying unfortunately in my state I do have to save it for 2 years, :-(
      I do use the sticky notes. I was just trying to find a different methods to organize the finished work because single pages can be messy:-(

Your whole arrangement of the curriculum gave me a lot of confidence to continue homeschooling. We should be wrapping up K4/K5 in about 8 weeks. I'm now looking starting at first grade!!! Hi Erica - If you are currently using Spelling You See, why are you also using All About Spelling? Do you feel that the Spelling You See is not comprehensive enough? Also, I'm looking for a comprehensive beginning Phonics>Reading>Writing type of curriculum. Would you recommend A Beka, and if so, what do you buy?

    • @erica_arndt
      @erica_arndt  8 лет назад +1

      +Michell Adams Hi Michelle, I use AAS for my younger kids because I prefer that they learn the basic phonics rules as I do think that's important. I don't use it for my older kids though, just the SYS. So we use SYS for the younger ones, and it doubles as handwriting for them. So I guess I just like the combo of the two for my younger kiddos :) I also like Abeka, we've used it for our reading for all 4 kids so far and it's worked well. I usually purchase the readers, the Basic Phonics Flashcards, then just write the blends they're working on each week on the board instead of purchasing all of their flashcards. But I have an older TM, and a few people have said that the newer ones don't don't list the sounds you're working on in the TM, just the card number. So I guess i"d look to see if they do or not. If not you might have to purchase their blends cards as well.

    • @michelldadams
      @michelldadams 8 лет назад

      +Erica Arndt Thanks for your reply!! Did you start out the AAS at the same time as the Abeka, or dos you wait until there was a firm foundation with phonics first?

    new subie here, i just found your channel and it is really helpful thanks for great videos. i am new to homeschooling my son is 6yrs/old and he is turning 1st grade this year. i just wish i could have all the materials and supplies since we moved here in Indonesia it is really hard to find English books materials and stuffs and i could not afford buying and shifting them from US or anywhere outside the country. it is really tough for me to manage and i am very much confused on how will i be able to make his curriculum. i wanted to teach my child and give him the best education and learning he could ever get, i really dont know what should i do. for now all i tried is do research myself each subject what my child should be learning at this level online i do manage to get it but just needed some supporting materials written in English like books or encyclopedia for science, world history and stuffs so sad :(

      hi Erica thanks a lot for the reply, unfortunately i don't have any friends or anyone from the US :( and to buy the materials and shift it would cost me so much and i just couldn't afford that :( . i am really interested in Math You See, Spelling You See, All About Spelling and All About Reading. if only i could get those even if Used second hand i guess it is much cheaper for the Manuals but i guess that impossible for me to find it here :( . i am also Interested in Usborne Books for my son since it is a bit difficult for him to get engage with books and reading maybe Usborne Books would help since it looks good and could be fascinating for a child with its vibrant colors and books you could lift a flap and see inside. i think it would be great, May i ask your opinion about Usborne books Erica what you think about them? using for homeschool? thanks a lot and keep up the great videos and helpful information for us beginners i really do appreciate it a lot :)

    Thanks for sharing. I heard you mention some software that you use for your planning. I'm trying to decide on digital versus paper for our 17-18 year, but can't find many options for electronic homeschool planners. A lot of the homeschoolers I have seen use paper ones. Do you have any recommendations for digital planners for homeschool that you have used or are aware of? Thanks in advance. I also wanted to say thanks so much for all the printables you put out. We are adding some for our Kindergarten year and you have so many amazing options.

      I have used www.homeschooltracker.com for years, but I got it way back when they had a free version. Now it has changed and they only offer subscription versions, so I'm honestly not sure how they work. There is another one called www.skedtrack.com that IS free and it's also online. There are pros/cons to both. I'd just do a little online research to see reviews on them as there are several online tracking software out there now, there are also apps now as well which make it more handy too. I also still have friends who do pen/paper planners and I have them avail. in my store. I think it just depends on what type of person you are and what works best for you :)

    How long does it usually take you guys to get finished in a day? We usually take anywhere from 2 1/2 - 3 hours but I am always curious about others. I have two 8th graders and a fifth grader. Even though we usually get everything done on our schedule I sometimes think its not "taking long enough". Even though I know that there is no exact "right" time.

    • @erica_arndt
      @erica_arndt  9 лет назад

      +DeShiia Coleman We usually do school from about 9-2 or so each day incl. lunch. Some days it takes longer if we have art projects and things like that. Other days it's faster if we don't have those. So it kind of depends. But we average at least 4 hours per day. But then we have to per state requirements, so it will also depend on your state and what you're required to do :)

    Right now my daughter is in Kindergarten and a good charter school (I've been considering homeschool for quite sometime even before she started school however we want to make sure it's the right choice) anyway her school teaches a grade level ahead meaning though she's in K they teach a 1st grade level curriculum and so forth, so if I decide to home school her would I put her in "second grade" and skip first entirely? Or is it just up to me and what I want to do? What would you suggest any recommendations?

    • @erica_arndt
      @erica_arndt  7 лет назад +2

      I would probably talk with her teacher to see what they say about starting her in 2nd grade instead of 1st. It is also totally up to you and what you want to do. I would consider her readiness to move ahead skill level wise as well as maturity wise. Sometimes academically students are good to move ahead, but they don't have the maturity to sit and focus for longer periods or handle the heavier workload. But again, you know your child best and what she's ready for.

    • @Missmurder8905
      @Missmurder8905 7 лет назад

      Erica Arndt thank you so much, it's all still under consideration. Ultimately I want her to have the best and most customizable education and tailor to her specific needs. Though she's in a public charter school that is a pretty decent one and they're a lot different than many others, I've never been a huge fan of the "public school system" and teaching to memorize and take tests vs. actually learning things of substance. I live in AZ so it's extremely lenient here as far as standards etc. go. So thank so much for your input, maybe over the summer I'll work on her with "first grade" level stuff and "second grade" so see where she fits in. She has a little trouble with math so that might have to be a repeat this year, but everything else she seems to be good for (another reason I like the idea of homeschool is each subject can be at the level/rate that fits). My husband is also military and stationed elsewhere it would make it so much easier to be able to visit for longer periods of time.

      Oh okay, for levels A & B I do suggest getting the TM because they have word lists you give to your students. However in the higher levels it's mostly just used for dictation. And in that case you can always just read from your students workbook while they write the dictation on a piece of paper, or pull out the worksheet. I don't use the TMs for the higher grades.
