    If anyone is interested in learning more about the work of actuaries, check out these sites: www.actuaries.org.uk/become-actuary/what-actuary , www.actuarialcareers.co.uk/career-advice/what-is-an-actuary/ . I found these really useful when researching careers last year! Actuaries work in lots of different fields so it is impossible to summarise in a single video. Hopefully this video gives you an insight into an intern's typical day - it's more about the learning at this stage and my day-to-day work was by no means representative of what a qualified actuary gets up to!

      PaigeY ...ahhh, yes, actuarial positions....they can be difficult to get, so good for you!....
      I was wondering how much info they gave interns/new employees, when putting you to work on projects....I am not looking for the specific info, but rather, if you had a problem to solve, did they give you functions, algorithms, suggest distributions to use, etc.
      I have several analytic/quants degrees, but I am worried that I might be given more than I could handle.
      Also, what level of excel,expertise did they require?....Did you use any programming languages?....If so which ones?..R?, ...Python?

      Hi PaigeY,
      Here in India we do internships for 4-6 months and usually we get to internships in the last semester of University.... If found suitable we get an offer from the organisation to join permanently.
      I am happy to see such detailed video about internship in just 10 minutes. Although I never got an opportunity to work as an intern I think it was great for you.
      Hope you got to learn life changing experience from it.

Whilst I'm based in a very different actuarial role, the nature of the science is the core understanding. Some of the brightest and most successful actuaries I've worked with, the ones that go on to lead companies, are the ones that are just really down to earth and never try to be the smartest person in the room (even though they are). 1. Actuarial exams shall become your life until you get your FIA (UK) or FSA/FCAS (North America), :DDDDDDD
    2. You'll meet some of the smartest people out there and they'll become a great source of inspiration for you in your own life
    3. You will probably fail at least one actuarial exam and when you do, ice cream and 'Move Along' by The All American Rejects will help you get back on track
    4. When you're close to becoming a qualified actuary, you get to give advice to your interns on how to tackle exams ;DDDD

      I am doing a bachelors in finance and i can tell that it is very normal for scientist students to come and work in the finance industry, the background reason would be that the field of finance is extremly quantitative and analytically based, which translates well to the mathematics and the analytical thinking that scientist students learn. But the main reason could be many things, maybe scientists would like to get into a higher paying job, like in finance, than what a job as a astrophysicist(example) would pay. Or they just might be interested in the workings of the complex financial market🤷🏼‍♂️
      Fun fact: The fund manager who predicted the financial crisis of 2008 (Michael Burry) (also seen in the movie The Big Short) was previously an physician.

    Hey Paige! Just a question: was this internship strange/challenging seeing as its not related to your current degree? Thanks!

    • @PaigeY
      @PaigeY  5 лет назад +43

      Some aspects of my degree were definitely applicable to the role, for example actuaries need strong numerical skills which I have developed from my maths modules at uni. However, as you say actuarial work is not directly related to my degree, so it did take some adjustment. It was fun learning something new though and most of the work I did just required the ability to think things through carefully and apply good logic.

      That’s incredibly unrealistic, especially considering the current economy
      Most Oxbridge graduates can’t even get manage to get a job for a few years.
      Paigey is one of the lucky and smart ones, she’s realistic.

    • @PaigeY
      @PaigeY  5 лет назад +2

      My natural sciences degree has definitely given me skills that were applicable in the internship, but no they were not directly related! To pursue an actuarial career you typically need a degree in a numerate subject e.g. maths, statistics, physics, chemistry, economics etc. There’s plenty of info online about the work of actuaries if you’re interested to learn more ☺️

  • @LucyWonglondonbody2body
    @LucyWonglondonbody2body 4 года назад

    Did Maths and Economics then went into Actuary. Could not stand it as excel all day. So went back to do Masters in Real Estate Finance and now moved to real estate private equity. Far more interesting. Still interesting analysis but more real world related where I see development projects in our funds invested and more interesting modelling work. Plus better learning curve dealing with investors, developers, finance guys etc. Plus doubled salary without those awful actuary exams that have no relevance to work in insurance.
