I love the two-storey room! But it’s just so weird. All those students in the UK pay an insane amount of money for a room that (in Kings at least) doesn’t allow you to cook your own meal, sometimes doesn’t have a private bathroom, is furnished with non-matching old furniture, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I did 2 summer programmes in Cambridge and I loved the university, but at my uni (Austria) I rented a flat close to uni, pay 600€ per month, 50 m2, and I have a bathroom, a kitchen, a balcony, a nice view, and my own furniture. That’s just so much more convenient.
The problem with the furniture is not that it's old, old furniture can be marvellous. The problem with Cambridge uni's furniture is that it's cheap, uncomfortable, unhygienic and was never ever considered nice. It's an embarrassment

You *have* to clear it over christmas and summer for sure, but you can choose to pay more and stay over easter break (4-5 weeks in march-april). Where did you leave before university? Most parents, even if they want their children to be independent, don't mind it, if they come back home for breaks. This saves money on rent and buying food together is easier. I suppose if you have money, you can try to rent another place, but Cambridge and London are ridiculously overpriced, so that would be wasteful in my opinion. But if you consider that easter break can be spent in college, then you only have to come up with something for christmas (I'm sure some friends would gladly adopt you, so that you don't spend it alone) and summer (most people find summer internships which are around 8-10-12 weeks and then you have money to rent a room near your office, hopefully or if it's a travelling internship, then you don't even have to arrange accommodation!)

Do you have to change rooms every single year? Seems like a hassle and really stressful where you might end up each year, especially since tbh I'd rather stay on my own than have room mates
1) Yes, you have to "change" every year, by which I mean "choose again". If you are lucky and high up on the ballot for choosing, then you might end up in the same room! 2) Moving in between years is not a hassle, since everyone leaves for the summer anyway (which is a 4 month break!). What IS a hassle is having to pack everything between terms. Which is why there are 2 types of rent - short contract and long - one is where you pack in between terms and someone might live in your room during the holidays (like a guest or an exchange student) and another is when the room is yours for all 8 months. 3) All the rooms in College are singles, no one has any roommates for 3-4 years.
