Your mom has such a calming and peaceful aura about her. I can't wait to jump in and make my own nursing stories, but now back to studying pharmacology...

Although I am a pre-med I can agree that doctors are losing on autonomy from insurance companies , I love both of your insights on nursing and what it means to be a great nurse. You are both so sweet and supportive of each other and your roles in nursing!

Thanks for the kind words!! I definitely see it as an NP too. The autonomy is quickly vanishing and almost everything I write for gets rebutted by Insurance 🤦🏻‍♀️. Loved the perspective from pre med! Thanks!

Love this Q&A, very interesting to hear another perspective and see how things have (and haven’t) changed in nursing and healthcare. Your mom is awesome, so smart and calm. Also, thought it was funny she said nurses would have to give up their seats to MDs, we’re still expected to do this for certain doctors at our local hospital. Plenty of old school MDs who do not respect the nursing staff unfortunately.

I’m taking prerequisites now to become a nurse midwife (hopefully a women’s health nurse practitioner also). 😊 I’m going to do a direct entry program, because I have a non-nursing bachelors degree and I don’t want to get a second bachelors when I can go back to school and get a masters . So I liked y’all talking about that part and how the medicinal world is more welcoming to Midwifery.

This is what I want to do as well!! I'm wondering what the difference in schooling is from a CNM to a WHNP? I was told they essentially have the same job duties, but midwives obviously provide care for the birthing process.

Luka Megurine I think you take your main courses to become a midwife, and then you take a few extra classes to combine them and also become a WHNP.

    Glass Chest tubes..omgoodness!
    I can't even imagine!
This was so captivating listening to your mom's experiences and thinking of my practice now as nurse. Nursing practice has come a long way and we surely have so much room for continued growth.. This was a great dialogue and something I think I will do now from time to time with the more seasoned nurses I work with. 😊
I think I would do Peds or PICU, if I had to switch from NICU.. BUT I don't see this happening soon, I love the babes 💜

Thank you for another video full of so many wonderful insights. I 100% agree that nurses are still not appreciated enough for what they do. Nurses may not be doctors but we're expected to learn practically the same amount of information so we can safely collaborate and know when to speak up. I feel like most people are still under the impression that nurses "just give baths" or "just wipe butts" when there are so many more complex things happening with meds and procedures...and even if those complex things weren't happening, bathing and bathrooms are SO important anyway. Where I am as a student right now, we get 1 to 2 patients max per shift and are expected to provide all of their care from bathing, bathroom, meds, wound care...everything...and so far it seems that the basic stuff is where you really find the humanity in it all. Anyway, as always, keep being wonderful ladies, you rock.
