On my 4th day of orientation as a new grad RN... because of the pandemic I wasn’t able to get a job for 5 months out of nursing school. I feel so overwhelmed of how much information I forgot and still have to learn from being new. Thank you for this video and the comments I feel a lot less alone on this journey!
Nurses like you, who appreciate and respect their techs, are the reason we don’t quit! I am so much more willing to go above and beyond for a nurse who sees my value and is even willing to help me out or even teach me things sometimes. It’s the most exhausting and stressful job I’ve ever had but also the most fulfilling because I’ve had the honor to work with some super amazing nurses. I’m binge watching you tonight because I’m just so excited I will begin nursing school in two months! 🤩
As a Covid grad with reduced clinical experience, these videos have been so helpful. I start orientation tomorrow in a New Grad program. Im excited but extremely nervous about messing up or not knowing something.

Watched this two years ago when beginning my BSN program. Rewatching this today as a new grad RN two weeks into my ICU residency program 💞 I adore your videos
Absolutely normal but that doesn't make it any easier! You will get there I promise. Keep showing up and you will be amazed that soon you are running on autopilot and teaching the newbies :)
I’m a new grad nurse, about 5 months in on a tele/PCU unit. I still feel super lost and really dumb so I needed this video. I’ve talked to some of my grad friends but they don’t seem to resonate the same feelings I have. It’s comforting to hear you address exactly what I think and feel. Trying to hang in there and remind myself I’m still learning and new but it’s definitely hard.
Four months in as a new nurse and watching your videos are so encouraging. As I'm listening I am realizing just how far I have come already. Thank you so much for the practical advice and tips!
I want to tell you that I felt the sincerity and warmth in your voice and the message you are sending us new grad nurses. It’s like you have experienced so much but have succeeded as you were learning along the way. Thank you for speaking the truth. Good luck with everything and thank you for making videos like this.
I just got my first RN job as a new grad! The unit I'm going to seems so supportive and team oriented. I feel so lucky. I take the NCLEX next week and am pretty confident I'll pass the first try. Everything is starting to work out :D
Hey Liz!!! You may or may not know that I’ve been following you for a couple years now. Tomorrow is my very first day on preceptorship as a new grad nurse. I am filled with anxiety and pre-shift dread. I am so thankful for this video and for you being there for your fellow nurses.
I’m a tech while I’m in the nursing program and I can tell you, so many new grads have acted like they’re too good to deal with bathroom related messes and other things . Please please help your techs. You might be busy but remember for the 4 patients you have they have 12! Also the more you help your techs the more they will help you too!
Ugh I’m a new nurse and I really didn’t know for a few days that I should dump the beside commode out. I thought I was being helpful answering call lights and helping patients go to the bathroom but I didn’t know if they needed to chart pee or stool so to be safe I just didn’t dump it out :( and it gave the aide the wrong impression of me.. learned my lesson
your video has helped me tremendously! i had my third shift yesterday as a new grad in a nurse residency program and my day ended with me crying in my car at the end of shift. i felt so overwhelmed and feel like i know absolutely nothing, despite doing really well in school. After watching your video, i took a deep breath and realized that everything i am feeling is normal and that i WILL get through it. thank you !
I feel the exact same way! I cry after every shift & I doubt my ability to push through. I’m also so embarrassed because I feel like the nurses think I’m stupid :( I hope it got better for you!
Your so helpful. I'm on my 6th day as a new grad RN, I feel like I'm drowning. I had two pts code on me so far. My mind went blank I had to have someone come in and take over. I felt like a failure. 😔
There is NO WAY you can successfully participate in codes 6 days out, heck 6 months out. You aren't expected to know that yet! Please don't beat yourself up about that. You will get there. Give it time. Nobody popped out of nursing school knowing how to do everything, I promise. I don't think I was helpful in a code until I had been a nurse for probably a year.
@@NurseLiz I try to tell myself "you can do this." but there is SO MUCH and it's all overwhelming! I'm trying not to beat myself up about it. I know it has to get better eventually. I thought the NCLEX was stressful but being a new nurse doesn't even compare! I'm glad you share your experiences and tips for new nurses. I definitely feel alone as a new nurse, your videos are super helpful!
I'm a new nurse on the job for two months! I'm on a telemetry medicine unit. It's very exciting and overwhelming! It was a shock because you leave preceptor thinking you got it and you get things that thrown you that leave you totally confused! Thanks for the video.
Not a new grad (graduating in May!) but even in nursing school it took me until now to really become comfortable being my own advocate and taking control of my own education when it comes to clinical. I felt fine asking my professors questions about the lectures all the time, but asking about skills that I thought I should have mastered already? Absolutely not! Haha!! I have actually been really proud of myself for not caring as much about making myself look dumb because like you said the nurse (and patient) would much rather have me ask a silly question than do something wrong and potentially harm someone! Thanks for all your tips and advice! I always feel so encouraged after watching your videos! (PS I’m kind of binge watching all your videos to unwind after a somewhat stressful day! 😂)
May is going to get here so fast! that last year is so exciting :) I"m glad you are starting to feel more comfortable! It is definitely hard as a student. I remember trying to balance not wanting to be in the way with really wanting to learn. Sounds like you are doing great!
I'm not a new grad but this video is great. There are days I still don't know! I'm never afraid to ask questions. I think the minute you stay silent is the min errors can happen. I also agree networking is the best! There are always more people feeling the same way as you!!!
I'm a new grad ICU nurse, week 6. I KNOW NOTHING. jk. there is so much to learn and I feel I learn something new everyday. :) Thank God for patient preceptors. I am taking 2 patients now but need lots of coaching.
Nurse Liz I want to THANK YOU soooo much for uploading this... you don't know how much this really helps me as I start my new grad journey in a week... really great tips and confidence booster. Especially when I was in nursing school, sometimes when I asked questions to my clinical professor, she'd be like "umm you are supposed to know that." And then I felt so stupid and made me ask less questions to her. You made me realize that it's better to get yelled at or being seen as dumb than jeopardizing patient care. Thank you so much Liz!
Ugh I’m so sorry she said that. That’s ridiculous. Nobody can know everything. Best of luck on your new job! You’ll do great! Give yourself lots of patience and love in the beginning ❤️

I am currently a second year nursing student and this was really great to hear. Not all the nurses at my clinicals are very helpful to the nursing students and it's definitely made me scared about what it's going to be like when I graduate.
i'm an lpn and want to go back for the bsn but ive been discouraged especially at the facility i work because lack of support and i wasn't trained/oriented, it makes it harder.. i feel like i don't know what i'm doing. watching this video has given me hope again, i think i just need to find a place where i can get the proper training, knowledge and skills that i was taught.
training is EVERYTHING! I'm so sorry you're in a place that doesn't provide that :( Fingers crossed you find something that can utilize all of your skills soon!
I’m a LPN too and I’m in a BSN program currently. I am working a facility that gave me 3 days of training on the floor then put me in a newly opened unit by myself with 19 patients and I average 2 discharges and 2 admissions a shift. I have no clue what I’m doing and that nurse to patient ratio is insane and also scary from a patient safety aspect. Skilled facilities are very scary places. I’m hoping this gets better when I am a RN in a hospital.
Omg I love your energy and that you are all about being helpful and nice to everyone in the hospital, no matter the job! I am an x ray tech and while many nurses are great to jump in to help, there are some that do not or they disappear as soon as I walk in with my portable machine. While most times I don't need help there are times I do and it is so wonderful when I get an eager nurse to offer help, even when I end up not needing it. I also work prn in central telemetry, as I had a major surgery and was put into this job full time for six months due to a lifting restriction and I was just surprised and sad with how rude many nurses are to the telemetry techs. I was appalled with how I was treated as a telemetry tech vs an x ray tech, I was talked down at so much in telemetry but in x ray I am a lot more respected by nurses....yet I'm the same person with the same attitude. I am now finishing my prerequisites for a BSN program and I will always treat everyone with respect. Thank you so much for your tips and info!
Hi Liz! I am a new grad RN and have an interview tomorrow for the orthopedic/neuro/nephro med surg floor. Thank you so much for your tips for pediatric nursing! They are very helpful for grasping the idea of what pediatric nursing looks like and how to deal with some of the challenges!
You're wonderful Liz. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I love you and your attitude!! So helpful! I'm in my first week of my first job, so far I did admin preparations and tons and tons of e-learning, inductions and trainings. On Tuesday is my first day on the job. Wish me good luck. All the best.
This is really good common sense advice for almost any job. I don't know how I still managed to make a lot of obvious mistakes (not wanting to ask for help all the time was a big issue, I also don't much enjoy teaching). Different field, not nursing, but I could still stand to hear this. Thanks Liz
How in the world did this ever get a thumbs down? Love love this video! I'm a new BSN, RN grad and I'm about to start a float pool position. Tks for the vids!

NURSE LIZ!!!! I sincerely think you were sent from God above. I used all the tips from this video at work (just started as an ortho RN in October), and today the clerk told me that she's been hearing great things about me from the other staff! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!!
I've just finished orientation and am now on my own. I was so overwhelmed during my last shift that I forgot to raise the HOB up for a patient that has continuous tube feedings. I also forgot to turn the Lopez valve back to open for the feeding and the feeding got all over the towel. This happened during the last 45 min of my shift and the oncoming nurse went ballistic. She literally was screaming at me and I was so panicked that I was unable to answer her questions appropriately. I felt so small, dumb, and incompetent. I also saw her complaining to the charge nurse. I still feel bad about it because I forgot very simple but important things that could have had huge repercussions. It was one of my worst shifts so far and I know there will be worse. It's pretty disheartening.
ugh i'm so sorry that you had that experience. It's absolutely OK to make mistakes. They should never be met that way. How are you supposed to know everything?? you cant. Ugh. I'm sorry.
Hi Liz, great video! can you please do a video on Codes/RRT tips if possible, I think it is a topic that is very hard to discuss for nursing students. Thank you so much!
I happen to stumbled across this video and I am having so many different feelings as I am also a new grad nurse! Glad there is a community like this that voices exactly how I am feeling.
Literally just took my NCLEX this morning but I just LOVE your sweet encouraging personality! Will definitely listen to these videos again when I actually start working :)
Dear Liz, you are a god-send, you are so informative and kind and set a great standard for all us new grad nurses to go by. Although I am in Australia, you will be with me in spirit on my shifts. Thank you!!
To relax in between shifts i try to do as less as possible! I usually have coffee or some kind of adult beverage and listen to a podcast or read on my apt balcony.
Hey girl hey! I’m in a weird new grad spot. I have had my license since Dec 2017, however I haven’t started working yet as I have had two babies since graduating nursing school in June 2017! Although I’m approaching one year as a RN, I am still a new grad. Once I get settled with my new family, I can’t wait to start working to put these tips to use! I love your channel because one, you are a mom so to see you balance work/school/family is inspirational. And also, it wasn’t until I watched your videos that I truly understood what it meant to be an NP. Thanks for all of your tips and thanks for sharing with us and showing us newbies some love!

Nurse Liz is the kind of veteran nurse any new nurses would be happy to be paired with --- so encouraging! and this video came across so hopeful and that's exactly the same vibe I want to give on my channel that you're not alone - We all started somewhere :-)
I just pass my Nclex July 8 ,2021 you tips will help me a lot , I feel so worry about to start at the hospital 🏥 with not experiences, and all that nurses say about mean people,I’ll ask questions rather kills someone.
Liz!!!!! You are wonderful. I've only had 2 shifts on my unit so far and this video is EXACTLY what I needed to hear! You're so encouraging and your tips are so helpful. You make me feel not so alone :)
Omg this is just what I needed and exactly what I struggle with. Your video was like that moment in church when you feel like the preacher is talking exactly to you !
Love all the examples you give on how to really take ownership of one's nursing career, Liz! Lotsa gems here, I tell you. The mindset and habits you encourage developing in the beginning are ones that will continue to serve nurses throughout their whole career. Thanks!
I needed this video!! 1 month till I come off orientation and your videos are so helpful. Heading over to the night shift tips next! Thanks for all the tips Liz 😃
I'm on week 4 as a new grad in an L&D unit at my local hospital and trying so hard not to quit :( I wanted to be a NICU nurse since the beginning of 2018 but they chose not to hire me and I was soooo devastated (still am lol) and I didn't really have a backup plan because adult care is not something I was interested in. I ended up in L&D since they really needed nurses and before nursing school I entertained the idea of becoming one, but it's sooo scary and overwhelming! I feel like I'm too slow and anxious for this fast pace unit where things can change in minutes... I really want to be successful and not give up so soon but it is really hard
It is so so incredibly hard in the beginning. Please know you aren't alone in feeling that way. There is so much to learn. I hope every day gets a little easier, and you can transfer to the NICU soon
Thank you, day 2 into preception before being released into the wild... I'm a dear in the headlights after being the most competent and confident student. Just trying to be kind to myself.
I just graduated in December, take my NCLEX in mere days and my job starts in a few weeks on an OB unit...I'm excited and terrified at the same time!!!
Omg Liz you’re amazing ❤️ you give me so much motivation. I graduate in December and was so stressed about everything. This is very much appreciated xoxo Caroline (fellow nurse 😁)
I'm in my third month of this job and I don't know if I can do it anymore. I'm losing my sanity. I get panic attacks the day before my shift starts, panic attacks on the job, and have unbelievable depression to the point I've wanted to die. I'm on antidepressants and antianxiety meds and doing counseling but nothing is helping. I'm also in school full time doing my bachelor's so I can get a better job. It took me six months to get this job after graduation and want to get my years experience of floor nursing but I'm literally destroyimg my body. I can't eat because my stomach is so tied up on knots. I don't know what I should do ☹️ I'm gonna try to stick it out till the six month mark but every month it seems like my anxiety and depression is getting worse. It also doesn't help that this kind of nursing isn't my passion and not something I want to do long term but I can't get a job anywhere without my bachelor's and experience and unfortunately I won't graduate till end of this year. Anyone in a similar situation and have any tips? 😩
Hi, Liz! I love your channel. So I’m a little apprehensive because I’m about to start an accelerated program. I was wondering if you have any valuable input on Nurse Residency Programs to give new RNs more practice? I see pitches from some hospitals with a time requirement but no real input from real people. Thank you!
It totally depends on the hospital. They’re probably more useful for ICU starts. Most others don’t seem very helpful. A decently long orientation seems to do the exact same
Hi Pogi, I graduated nursing school this past March. I interviewed with 2 hospitals that offered a residency program. Because of Covid, one hospital shut down their hiring process, and the other hospital hired me. I am in week 6 of the residency program and am so thankful for it. There is a lot of review from school, but there is a lot more to learn (hands on). I signed on for 12 week residency program and 2 years service with this hospital and haven't regretted it. My best to you!
Any new grads out there? Say hey and meet some others here!

Meee! Started two months ago and it’s getting better but man my first few weeks completely on my own I was convinced I got into the wrong profession 😅
Hey !
HELLO! New grad RN starting in the NICU tomorrow :0
How do you feel now after some time?? :)
I just got off my first day of orientation and I literally wanted to go home, cry, and quit. This video made me feel so much better

I hope things are improving!!!
Yes. I’m one month into orientation, and I can relate.

Hope you run into lots of kind nurses!

Congratulations on your new job!!
@@NurseLiz thank you!
New grad here starting at the end of this month!!!! Thank you for the tips; just purchased my notebook!!!!
Congrats on graduating and the new job!!

How are you supposed to know everything?? you cant. Ugh. I'm sorry.
Thanks for your program I'm glad to be retired I couldn't keep up with new methods. I was a CNA 30yrs SNF. God blessings to you 🙏
You’re such a beautiful human. Thank you for this video
Hey starting New grad orientation today🎉 thx for the tips Nurse Liz❤
Hi Liz, great video! can you please do a video on Codes/RRT tips if possible, I think it is a topic that is very hard to discuss for nursing students. Thank you so much!
Sure! Thanks for the idea
@@NurseLiz Thank you Liz :)
New Grad here! First day is tomorrow. Thank you for the wonderful video!
Hope your first day goes well!!
Let me know how it goes!
Thank you for these amazing tips! I start my first job next week on a medsurge unit.
Congratulations on the new job! Hope it goes well!
Starting on the floor next week as a brand new nurse on a critical care floor. I am very overwhelmed, but this helped alot! Thank you.
You're gonna rock it!
Dear Liz, you are a god-send, you are so informative and kind and set a great standard for all us new grad nurses to go by. Although I am in Australia, you will be with me in spirit on my shifts. Thank you!!
Yesterday was my first day 😭😭 i wanted to quit lol jk. Kinda
It will get better, I promise! I wanted to quit every day for the first 6 months. You got this!
Nurse Liz thanks! 2nd day was a little better
Nisha Leah 🙌🏻
To relax in between shifts i try to do as less as possible! I usually have coffee or some kind of adult beverage and listen to a podcast or read on my apt balcony.
That sounds lovely!
I LOVE all nurses. Just know your patients love the help and care you give.
Thank you so incredibly much for this, I have my first shift today as a new grad and you have definitely helped to settle some of my nerves.
Hope your first week is going well!
Great tips! Thanks for helping the rest of our crew out!
Congrats on your babes! Do you know what kind of unit you want to work on?
Nurse Liz Labor and Delivery! Eventually I want to become a certified nurse midwife/ women’s health nurse practitioner!
Ada T yes!!! Such an awesome specialty and field. I LOVED my midwife group 🙌🏻

Really needed this. I’m only in clinical and have a constant fear of doing something wrong. Thank you💕💕
Thank you for these tips! I am a new grad nurse, but I appreciate knowing things to look out for and that is it okay to ask for help;
Nurse Liz is the kind of veteran nurse any new nurses would be happy to be paired with --- so encouraging! and this video came across so hopeful and that's exactly the same vibe I want to give on my channel that you're not alone - We all started somewhere :-)
thank you so much, Am a brand new nurse and am starting tomorrow. am so nervous 🤔
Liz
You are so on point. I love that you are sharing these tips with our new nurses. I will share your channel with all my friends. You Rock!

You’ll do great!
Great tips! Thank you very much!
I loved this video. It was perfect. Such a great video for newbies and a great reminder to seasoned nurses to be kind and supportive.
thanks for being real!! these are so important, thanks for sharing :)
So glad it was helpful!
Love all the examples you give on how to really take ownership of one's nursing career, Liz! Lotsa gems here, I tell you.
The mindset and habits you encourage developing in the beginning are ones that will continue to serve nurses throughout their whole career. Thanks!
Aww thank you for the kind words and encouragement! I appreciate it so much as always!
I needed this video!! 1 month till I come off orientation and your videos are so helpful. Heading over to the night shift tips next! Thanks for all the tips Liz 😃
I’m so glad they’ve been helpful! What type of unit?? Night shift people are the best people!
Nurse Liz surgical step down, specifically cardio thoracic surgery! And yes I totally agree, the night shift staff rock!
Meg M. I love that population! Hope you do too!
Thank you for this video! New grad nurse here starting on a pediatric floor tomorrow! Super excited but also a little nervous!
congratulations on your new job!! hope you love it! i loved my peds job, such a special population
Appreciate the video Liz! I feel a little more prepared now for my first day ☺️
This was so great and reassuring and helpful, thankyou!
I’m so glad! You got this!

Thank you, day 2 into preception before being released into the wild... I'm a dear in the headlights after being the most competent and confident student. Just trying to be kind to myself.
you got this!
Great tips from a great nurse! Thank you! 💜👍
Glad they were helpful!
I just graduated in December, take my NCLEX in mere days and my job starts in a few weeks on an OB unit...I'm excited and terrified at the same time!!!
So many exciting things happening for ya!! You’ll do great on nclex!
Your so encouraging!❤
Omg Liz you’re amazing ❤️ you give me so much motivation. I graduate in December and was so stressed about everything. This is very much appreciated xoxo Caroline (fellow nurse 😁)
Aww thanks girl! You are so close! congratulations!! Hang in there
I love all your tips Liz!! I’m going to make a real effort to try to start getting to work early 😭
It definitely is no fun but was so helpful!
Wow Clare, are you ok? What did you end up doing about your job? No occupation is worth your sanity and mental health!
I oove your videos so much, you're so sweet! Also, where did u get your glasses? They are amazingggg 😍
Thanks!! I got them from Warby Parker 👍🏼, the exact ones are linked in the description!
I just passed NCLEX! ❤️ hoping to get a job soon!!!
Congratulations!!
