Hi mate. I really enjoy your content. Look forward to every episode. Off topic here What performance pipe would you match with a 24 road glide cvo st. I take possession in november. I would really appreciate yr thoughts. Cheers
Good day my friend, im sure you get asked this all the time and I would understand you not commenting, i have a softail low rider 107, Im torn between two cams the zippers 468 or the CR480 I do a lot of long distance solo travel looking for longevity I am not a high rpm guy, my bike is over the 20,000 mile mark so i figured i would go in there and change out those stock lifters and being a 2019 change out the oil pump among the other basic things, cam bearing, tensioner, etc, I have already put the SE 55 intake , basic V&H slip ons with a ventilator air cleaner, any opinion would be greatly appreciated, even a different suggestion. Thank you.
G'day Tommy - What's your opinion on late model M8s using oil? If Harley suggest 1 litre oil use is 'normal' for 2500Ks travelling, where is that oil going in your opinion? No other cars, bikes, or marine vessels use that much oil unless there's a serious problem. Thanks for any insights.
@paulypaulypauly8011 The early model M8s (2017 to 2019) had some Oil consumption issues that were related to 'Sumping'. This was due to the lack of oil scavenging from the 1st few generation oil pumps. The oil was showing low on the dipstick because the oil wasn't being scavenged from the crankcase properly. Some did it worse than others. This led to some folks topping up the oil & essentially over filling the bike. On the other hand there was a run of a few bikes a few years ago where ALL the piston rings were lined up from factory leading to excessive oil use. These were fixed under warranty as far as know. I personally did a out 5 or 6 bikes with this issue. Harley have to give some sort of 'normal usage' to make sure they are covering many different factors and riding conditions. I personally think that 1ltr for 2500km is a bit high but then again, I'm not the manufacturer. I'm sure they have their reasons. Most likely so they can monitor customers bikes for research & development reasons so they can rectify the issue/s. It's probably set that high so it proves that there is a problem with the bike so it can fixed under warranty / good will etc. In the case of a bike using that much oil on 2500km it would have to be either sumping or buring it as its passing the rings into the combustion chamer.
@@MasterTechMiller thanks for the swift reply. I’m referring to late model bikes (the ones with the updated oil pumps). Specifically, mine is a 2023 flhtk, and it uses oil like nothing I’ve had before. It’s only about 300 mls per 2500 ks, but that would add up to nearly a liter between services. I cannot accept that a modern 114 engine should be drinking oil like that without there being an issue. Do you think it’s possible they were lining up the rings in the 2023 bikes, or are there any other potential reasons you can think of? We went to ride to Perth from Victoria, but I’ll be fucked if I’m going to carry 3 kgs of oil for the return trip!
Hi Tommy I have an sns 475 in a 21 lowrider s 114, super street 2-1, IAM looking to change the cam, to a more torque cam, as low rpm rideability is poor with this cam, cam you recommend a nice smooth cam at low rpm, I was thinking after an Andrews M462 or M465b not sure what the Cr480 would be like
I’ve heard somewhere that new 117ci engines in the softail range have upgraded cam bearings - can Tommy or someone confirm that? Looking to put a Stage 2 with CR485 into my new 2024 Breakout
Yes mate. All late model 2023 CVO modles with VVT have the upgraded inner cam bearing. All 2024 Touring bikes have the upgrade inner cam bearing too. Another change is the cam plate is slightly different too on the above mentioned year range & models. There is a larger groove cut in the Cam shaft plane bearing to allow for more oil flow to the cam shaft. While that has not been an issue in the past. It was introduced in the MY 2023.5 CVO VVT Bikes. They called for more oiling characteristics at the came & the cam plate made its way into the 2024 Touring models aswell.
As far a pushrods they should be checked even if the the cam manufacturer says its a stock base circle. My 131 crate motor shipped with .144" preload on the stock cam. Should be .090"-.110" preload cold. One thing i cant find is how much the M8 stretches. .100" preload hot is ideal.
Great comment mate! Unfortunately I can't find anything on how much the M8 stretches or grows. 100thou at operating temps is enough to allow for cold starts in cold conditions eith thick oil & on the other end it allows enough of a margin for hot running conditions. When I do high output applications, I almost always use short travel lifters from. APE.
Hey Mate, your vids are awesome. Thank you for the content you provide us. My question is; what Cam will give good power&torque but also increase fuel economy? Just picked up a new 23 LRS and looking at a stage 2. Cheers.
Hi Mr. Miller, there’s a big discussion about lifters for the M8 all over the internet. What brands of lifters do you find out to be reliable in the long run and quieter? As always, thanks for the amazing content.
@joaomauriciobasiledesouza6204 I personally find the Screamin Eagle high capacity lifters to be absolutely fine. I do use APE High Capacity lifters aswell. I have no preference when it comes to those 2 choices. The only reason I use APE sometimes is because they are sold in the kit that I'm fitting. In very high output builds intended for high RPMs I use short travel lifters from APE.
@@hoss6048 As I’m planning on doing a stage 2 myself and the only part left to buy, I’m reading all the HDForums about lifters, and there are people complaining about them all S&S, Feuling, Wood’s etc. That’s driving me nuts. The only that seems like to be a common sense is Hylift Johnson, but I’ve just watched a video today of catastrophic failure of a Wood Night Prowler (that is essentially Hylift Johnson 2313SE) that has spread metal parts all over the engine. So, I’m just lost.
Screamin Eagle now offer a Ohlins cartridge kit for the front forks. Have had great feedback so far from all the bikes I've fitted them too. If you're planning on doing regular test n tune or Drag meets I'd suggest looking into an aftermarket option like Barnett.
I have 2022 RKS 114. I saw your discussion about louvered baffles and how good they are for performance. I had perforated cheap slip ons. Then I had the 447 SE cam and lifters and cam bearing put in and the bike was way loud for early mornings in the neighborhood so I got the 4.5 Tab Bam’s with the 1.75 quiet baffles. Really great down low but sooooo crazy quiet. My question is since both sides are different in diameter what do you think about putting the 2 1/2 inch louvered baffle in the right side and leaving the left side with the 1.75 with regards to performance?Any downside? Thank you for all your incredibly informative content.
I don't think there would be any downside to it at all. I'd imagine it would help with top end HP as the smaller baffle on the left side helps to create scavenging in the main collector & right pipe.

My local Harley shop dyno tuned my stage 2 with a zippers 468 cam.. I noticed a lot of 14.4 afr in that block that encompasses idle and cruising, sound right ?
14.4 around the cruise section is absolutely fine. At idle is fine too, however I prefer them a little richer to help keep them a bit cooler because when your idling, your not usually moving which means no air flow over the engine. The richer AFR at idle helps keep it a little cooler

About to buy a new 24 Low rider s 117, with stage 2 from new, they will install the s&s 475 and I chose the TBR side eject pipe, keeping oil pump and plate stock, just replacing push rods, and lifter holders, I don’t think I’ll keep it this way for a long time to come, it’s enough for the amount of riding I’ll do, however I will ride long distance 250+ kms one way when ever I do ride as I’m in a remote area and travel to Sydney a few times each year, will this still be ok for freeway cruising? Any suggestions are appreciated, want to keep cost to minimum as the bike is already expensive enough, lol!
