  • AXA carried out research , in conjunction with leading motor research organisation Thatcham, into the cars on the UK's roads and estimates that only 34% have head restraints and seats that would be categorised as "good" when it comes to reducing the risk of the driver being the victim of whiplash injuries.
In the UK, 1600 claims for whiplash are made per day -- 570,000 per year - costing the insurance industry £2bn per year in payouts. If 65% of these could be avoided through better head restraints and seats this could mean a reduction of 370,500 claims costing around £1.3bn.

He says top of the head restraint should be at least as high as the top of the head, yet that is not the case in every example in this video. This is misleading. He fails to set up his head restraint correctly while talking about how to do it correctly.

maybe he got the wrong car cause he seems to be too tall for the headrest

      Tilt to
      = avoid the neck
= avoid the lower part of head (causes double vision when lose curvature part)
= slightly higher for additional safety margins
      = touch head about there
= drive without head touching headrest
= seat's back angle keeps back straight enough for shoulder-blades to push against backrest and head perpendicular to gravity
= adjust seat's supports (trim level nintendo, more expensive = more buttons, and terminologies but not necessarily more comfortable or safer. Especially true for... Audi.? Nissan GTR.? )

I was confused about this. Exactly as he says it should be in line with the top of the head, the headrest in the shot is way below.

They push your head too far forward causing a strain on neck. This video did not help

Yes, we really need an "expert" telling us how to use/adjust headrests designed by government decree to be "safe"....but ultimately unusable due to their poor human engineering design. How many people have REMOVED their headrests because they push the head forward...and are therefore unusable? Quite a lot. So how safe is that, for those people? Lord save us from the "experts" who designed these things, and the "experts" who tell us how to use them.

all these experts are lying because they didn't want to change the current design or failed to incorporate ergonomics to their car seat designs. The current design has two significant flaws: 1. it pushes the driver's head forward to the point that it makes most drivers uncomfortable. 2. there's a huge gap from head to lower back between the body and the seat. Most drivers are forced to hunch their back when driving. In a long distance trip, this flawed design caused a lot of fatigue on my back and neck. Some drivers buy extra pillows or cushions and put on their lower back and neck area. The need for such pillows is strong evident that the current car seat design has a lot of room to improve. Yet when you ask the manufacturer or car expert, they all tell you the current design follows the human curvature and is the best/safest/most comfortable. Totally liars.

Great informative video. Too many people never adjust it.
I myself have done this for many years.

How does being hit from behind push the body forward?

Thank you AXA. This is a very good video about headrests and proper use of it while driving. Thank you, Mr Wallace!
