I have my licence for almost 10 years now and I'm not even from the UK. But this channel is full of good advice for us foreigners as well. Turns out that I usually have my seat too far back and too much reclined. Spent about 20 minutes finding the perfect position as described in the video and I think it should be all right now. You do get a more in control feeling with this driving position.

I can't thank you enough. I am a short person and was having a terrible time keeping comfortable while driving. So much so I couldn't drive more than 20 minutes without all my muscles in my ribs and back jamming up. I tried every arrangement possible, even adding pillows and wedges. It was aweful. I came across your video and when you were showing how to adjust the steering wheel, bells started going off in my head. I had no idea I could pull the steering wheel closer to me. Bingo. Now I can drive comfortably again. When I had my car detailed they changed up my seats and my steering. Thank you so much. This was becoming debilitating, you saved my life.

SAE recommends placing side view mirrors further outward, to where you can’t see the sides of your car. While you don’t have your car as a frame of reference, you significantly reduce your blind spots by closing the gap between the edges of your rear view mirror and side view mirrors. great content as always!

I love how much detail you go into for how to adjust everything. Here in the US, my driving instructor pretty much just said to adjust the seat until I'm comfortable. Particularly helpful for me as a tall person with a shorter torso was that I shouldn't just put the seat to the minimum height. Also, the bit about half sky, half land for the side mirrors was really helpful because they didn't even mention adjusting them up and down.

My tips if you're driving for long periods: even the slightest twist of your lower back to reach the clutch will cause aches after hours of driving, so move a touch closer if you need to. Also if you can angle the seat it creates less strain if your hips are a touch higher than your knee, I.e. sloping down slightly towards pedals is better than slightly up.
Finally, make good use of the foot rest next to the clutch to keep your lower back firmly pressed into the seat.

😂😂😂😂😂. I had no idea steering wheels moved in and out sometimes. I knew they moved up and down. I’ve never been able to adjust my wheel up and down in my Nissan, and then I found this video! It moves in and out! Been driving with poor visibility on my dials for two years! Also set a nice proper clutch distance with my leg, and with the arm and steering wheel since it moves in and out. The car is now perfectly set to my needs! Love your videos! Thanks again!

  • @aliceyellowdog
    @aliceyellowdog 3 года назад +42

Great video! A tip on the wing mirrors that I learned (SAE, Car & Driver "How to adjust your mirrors to avoid blind spots") is to aim them slightly outward to catch your blind spots. You should be able to see an approaching vehicle from behind in your rearview center mirror, then as the vehicle leaves that mirror it should be picked up in the side wing mirror. Finally as the vehicle leaves the wing mirror, you should see it outside your side window.
There can be a learning curve to this setup for drivers who are used to using their side wing mirrors to see behind them (use center rearview mirror instead). I also still look over shoulder to confirm blind spot is clear.

One of my all time hates is when I take my car in for a service and then have to re-adjust the driving position. It always seems to take ages to get it back to how I like it! Whatever feels comfortable is usually best for me and I generally know if it’s ok or not because my leg starts to hurt if it’s wrong.
With seat height, I tend to just get something that feels good and then leave it alone. The problem with adjusting height, as shown in the video, is that it also moves the seat forward/backs so you then have to readjust that as well.
The only thing I would change from seeing this video is probably steering wheel height. I know my knees are quite close to the base, which could be an issue in a collision. I do sometimes hit the door with my elbow too so that could be due to how I’ve got the wheel set. It feels comfortable for me at the moment but worth a review I think. Thanks.

I agree with setting the horizon in the middle of the mirror (half sky and half road). Some suggest setting the horizon higher for more road, but if you're in front of a hill, it can be harder to see vehicles in the distance, which isn't the best if you're parked on the side of the road.

I'll try and do what you said. I have long legs and a normal body and sometimes if I don't adjust right I have difficulty controlling the brakes with sensibility.
    Thanks for the video

Yeah same here, when I bought my car(hatchback) I kept on slipping the gears going from 2nd to 3rd.
Its only then I realised my seating position was very bad, I kept on adjusting my body and my legs was out of position and not the seat I thought it was me being 6ft.

Honestly the most helpful video ever especially when explaining the automatic car positioning as some people have been telling me I am too close based on the fact that they all drive manual and have learned to set the difference based off of the clutch. Thank you for your videos

I changed my seat position a bit further back and my shifting and clutch control improved By 100%. I think I was too close to the steering wheel and I’ve been driving like that for 7 months.
