I'm teaching my teenager to drive and since I'm not a driving instructor I haven't put a lot of thought into things like "how do you know how to center the car?" I just do it after decades of driving, like instinct. So I turned to RUclips for ideas and found these videos. Tips like the ones you share here are GOLD. So easy to give her something specific, easy, and which totally works instead of "you'll just know after a while" kinds of answers. Of course being across the pond in the USA I have to flip all the left/rights to the correct ones 😄 Well done, I'm actually watching these and thinking "oh, that's clever. I wish someone had said that to me when I was a learner".

  • @WirelessPlum2

The bit about the negative feedback loop is very true, at first I barely realized I’m swerving in the lane but then people started road raging at me and I started focusing only on not swerving which made it even worse and then it just spirals out of control where driving becomes a nightmare and everyone is road raging at me. Great tip about aiming to drive where you need to go instead of aiming to avoid everything on the road that’s super helpful. Avoiding everything just adds to the negative feedback loop and makes the swerving worse. It’s embarrassing to focus so much on keeping your lane only for the swerving to get worse, it’s all based on paranoia and fear about a car accident, better that then being one of these fearless drivers who have no regard for anyone on the road though 😂

I have been driving for years and 1:03 still breaks my relaxation. I keep the car in the center of the lane using your great technique but that moment when a car is coming quickly in a narrow road my brain just turns into survival mode for some reason and pushes me to focus on whether the oncoming car is crossing the line in the middle.
    Thanks for the great tips.

Another problem with new drivers is that they will often overcorrect their position meaning they often end up in the wrong position again and have to correct again... what they should understand is that... unless you are very close to hitting something... you should steer very lightly and allow the car to drift in the position where you should be... the closer to the position you are the less steering angle you should have until at the very end you can take the steering angle off with a very short move

Thanks a mil. You solved my a big problem that was holding me back. Though I drove few years before I wasn’t used to curbs that are not visible on the left. So I was struggling to understand how to estimate my left properly while keeping good space in my right. Your tips were fantastic and they immediately made sense. I did a drive after mapping it in my head and I was able to drive in the centre with ease. Really really appreciate these tips.

I found I tend to steer towards something I'm staring at rather than away from it. (I'm the opposite of the video at 0:30)
That tendency affects my driving and my cycling. It was fun to play with that concept on a bicycle in an empty area: I'd try to go in a straight line but intentionally stare at something else. After a second or two, I saw how wildly off-centre I was from the line I wanted to follow. Of course even though it's less damage if you crash non-motorized wheels, do make sure it's safe to do weird things like that. You don't want to fall or run over someone's pet with your bicycle / scooter / etc.
    Thanks for the video!

As someone that is learning to drive, I do struggle with this in general... but also on many other occasions. When I am changing gears or checking my left and center mirror which is about it and this really mainly happens when I am driving quicker.
