Fixing my pain in the neck car head rest ... with a car jack?!

  • There are thousands of vehicle owners out there that are getting neck, back and upper torso pains from their head rests. I'm one of those sufferers and today I decided to literally get rid of the pain in my neck by adjusting my head rest position. I'm not suggesting you do the same adjustment. This video shows how I made the adjustment.
Basically a few years back, the US safety regulations required auto manufacturers to implement whiplash protection for drivers. That was a great idea! However, car manufacturers decided to implement the requirement in a cheap and quick way. They did this by pivoting the head rest severely to the front behind the driver's head. They used a 6' 2" dummy as the model to design the headrest. Unfortunately, most people don't fall into this exact measurement. For those that don't, they suffer discomfort and pains in the neck and upper back regions. I decided to end my suffering and make a slight adjustment.

Yup. They're causing definite serious spinal damage on the chance of POSSIBLE serious spinal damage. I just spent 7 hours in my daughter's car and it took me weeks to recover. I couldn't do a damn thing but lay on ice because of the pain I was in.

I have a somewhat different take on this. I think that headrests are an important safety feature - but only if they are used. When the rests are so uncomfortable that people remove them, then they are of no use. Just learned that at least some Ford trucks have adjustable rests forward and back - that would be great. We need to put ours back on and make sure they are not adjustable before attacking them with our car jack.

They are making car seats that are literally made for terrible posture - thereby increasing dramatically instances of neck and back pain - and all the horrors that go with that - so seems pretty stupid to me to prevent a whiplash injury that few people might get to creating horrible spinal issues which everyone will get from driving these !!! It make zero sense !!!

For anyone with good thoracic and cervical posture, the new regulation from 2009 to tilt the headrest so far forward is horrible! I hate driving my dad's GMC Canyon truck because it pushes my head so far forward, i cannot stand it! It doesn't bother my dad because he has a kyphotic spine--his head is naturally way forward relative to his upper back. But come on car manufacturers, you're causing neck pain for millions of Americans. At least make the headrests adjustable front to back!

I normally don't drive American vehicles, but unfortunately I was forced to get this one. And it has done the exact same thing that you've explained. It is actually caused me to have my head tilted forward. I think what's going on, is that I'm getting touched on the back of my head and it's like an oppressive Force. The consulate keeps pushing my head down and forward compressing my neck.

I’ve gotten straight up abuse from idiots preaching to me that “the head restraints are not meant for comfort; they’re for safety.”
Well, I’m not willing to trade guaranteed neck pain for the chance that I might get whiplash. Besides, just having the head rest there reduces the risk of whiplash already. No need to add insult to injury (pun intended).

6'2" here. Most definitely does NOT feel like headrests were designed for 6'2" tall people. In fact, the taller you are, the further the angle the headrest pushes your head forward and out of healthy posture. Only if you're short enough that your head is 100% below the headrest will these seats be comfortable!
Also, great idea! My attempts with headrests smashed under my couch and a 4' metal pipe were successful, but I'm looking for a better way. Ha

I have a 2017 Camry. The headrests tilt forward even more and the supporting rods are set back too far, making the entire headrest sit too far forward. They're not safe, because they cause people to crane their necks, as if they're looking down at a mobile phone.
When sitting with correct postural alignment, the front of headrest should be perfectly in line with the seat. I'm 6'2", not skinny, not overweight, and no height adjustment of the headrest helps at all. The headrests are just made wrong.
One way to check a person's correct postural alignment is to have them stand up straight with their back flat against a wall. Their shoulders and the back of their head should all touch the wall. (I'm a certified personal trainer. It's my job to know this.)

This is from our necks being titled forward all the time in our Honda CR-V. I pray this 4 years of having our necks tilted forward, has not given us permanent damage. The doctor said my daughter is showing signs of a small hump on upper back of neck. I'm gonna sue the shit out of them if our necks are messed up now. Are there any universal neck rest that I can switch out for. We also start to feel horrible after just 10-20 mins in the car. We also are suffering major neck pain and major headaches ughhhhh. Get the neck pillow for car instead, which will protect your neck. Pushing the head forward is a no no. This way will cause permernant damage to your spine, then your brain and your whole body. The nerves from your neck, and your spine in general, bring blood to corresponding parts of your body. Do not tilt the seat back, either. It will cause prob your lower back to bend backward and when your back automatically adjust over time because of inversed curve in your lower back, your whole spine will be scruised and you will have lots of problems from head to toes. Beware.

Wished I had come across your channel a lot earlier dear nextmoonyt, the headrest also has other huge problem, it totally obstructs vision to the rear because you see in the rear view mirror, and it blocks rearward vision when backing up. So I just removed it completely instead, good lord the damn thing is removable in my Prius C.

Sorry to disagree, I am 6ft 2in high and I too have problems with the head rest , but the major problem with modern contoured car seats are that they are designed for the comfort (not safety) of the average person who is very definitely not 6ft 2in , so the real reason most people sit (incorrectly) in cars , especially if you are taller than average , is the design of the seat back which curves around the shape of Mr or Mrs Average.

That is exactly what I have thought. I'm also 6' 2" and finally decided that the seat is too concave. The headrest also contributes to this by pushing my head and neck forward. However, the seat itself is so concave, with minimal upper back padding, that it feels like I'm bending forward all of the time. My 2013 Honda Pilot is fine, but brand new F150 truck is horrible.

Here’s why I urgently need to change this. I have had three neck surgeries. I had my spinal cord pinched into a flat shape like lasagna. This happened twice. They had to remove 3 discs snd two vertebral bodies. They put a big piece of my bone from the hip crest (iliac crest) and a big plate and screws. I was in danger of being quadriplegic. My wife has a Jeep Cherokee. It causes neck pain to drive or ride in it for both of us. Otherwise she loves the car. She works where she has to park in a parking loft where they seem to delight in dinging your car, otherwise we’d trade it. But we like this car except the headrests. I would buy aftermarket headrests if available or I would pay to bend them. This solution to these legal requirements is asinine! Shame on them! I am thinking of buying a used German SuV for my wife. I have a 2022 BMW and BMW wouldn’t dream of doing this. This bothers most people. We bought the Cherokee in 2019.

Thanks for sharing this. I'd like to point out that the specification car makers are complying with and what you are addressing here is headrest backset not the height. You keep saying it's for a 6'2" person. The head height mismatch is not the issue. The distance from the headrest is the problem. The NTSA code specifies that the headrest must not be more than 2" away from the 95th percentile head horizontal position. In short, they are going to make super sure they meet this by making the headrest as far FORWARD as possible. So much that you can't avoid touching it. Unfortunately, there is no safety standard for ergonomics.

I am all of 5'0". I recently bought a Hyundai Kona & never gave the comfort of the headrest a thought. After getting it home & driving it some I hated the angle my head was, pushing it forward. I was so uncomfortable. I tried raising it but that wasn't the answer. Then the light went on in my head & I thought just flip it. Thankfully it wasn't tethered in with cables or any other hindrance. I am now driving in comfort. I thought why this elaborate solution & long video if he could just remove it & flip it.

Thank you for posting this. Simple solution: All you have to do is turn it around so that it faces the other way. Just pull it up and out and put it back in the other way. Most cars will let you do this. However, I have rented some that will not let it be removed due to stops at the ends of the poles. On those, you can get sometimes bend it a little from the back seat; get in there and put your knees up behind the top of the chair and bear hug the headrest so that it pulls it toward you bending the mount a little bit. The bars usually do not bend and moving too far can result in the bottom of the mounting sleeves to poke into the back rest right between your shoulder blades, so make this adjustment incrementally. Others, like my wife's X3 have wires in them (for headrests that blast forward during an impact like an airbag). They require more work. Cutting the wire results in airbag warning every time you start the car. I gladly put up with this warning instead of having a stiff neck any time I drive it, but if not, I think I can open up the seat and wire it back to fool the car into thinking it's still withing design parameters. In my opinion, the problem is that they design for people with bad posture who drive with their seats reclined significantly or lean forward over the wheel. I am there to operate a vehicle, not take a nap or kick back and watch some TV. I drive with my seat in a better posture position that is good for my back and neck. As for the "safety requirement": To hell with the whiplash protection; I am GUARANTEED to have neck pain problems with headrests like this, whereas with actual impact-caused whiplash, I only have a SLIGHT CHANCE for it, even with the modification. ANY head rest, even ones turned backwards, will likely provide relatively decent protection as compared to no headrest at all. Besides, in more than In 30 years and hundreds of thousands of miles, I have never been hit in such a way that caused whiplash or neck injury and all that time I did not have a poorly designed, forward leaning headrest.

For most of my life cars didn't even have headrests, or if they did they weren't projected forward until the government got involved. As you say, this is guaranteed to cause problems. I have neck problems already and if I can't straighten my neck up and rest my head in an upright position the problem regresses. A headrest that is too far forward and that can't be adjusted backwards automatically eliminates a car before I even test drive it. Genesis, Mercedes Benz, and Audi, at least a couple years ago, all had headrests that could be moved back a couple of inches. In Cadillac CTS-V with Recaro racing seats, the seat back and headrest are all one piece, and the headrest portion is continuously upright from the seat back, so that is not a problem. I just traded that in, because of torque converter issues, for an Alfa Romeo Gulia Quadrifoglio, A great car with a few quirks-- the head rest seemed acceptable at first but after a few days I find that they are a problem. I was able to turn the headrest backward, which keeps it well away from my head and if I lean back the middle of the back of my head hits the bottom edge of the headrest, which is not as contoured or soft as the front part. It might provide some whiplash protection but I'm afraid it might give me a bit of a concussion also. I have order for 6 different varieties of headrest neck pillows to see if they can be fitted to take up some space and provide additional padding in the reverse position, or even take up some of the space created between the upper seat back and the head rest in it's normal position, and still be comfortable.

Tim Brown My Subaru Forester doesn’t allow you to turn the headrests around. You can pull the headrest out and put it in backwards but the notches don’t allow you to lower the headrest down which means you can’t bring the seat upright without the headrest hitting the ceiling.

@@designthinkingwithgian Not much else to say really. The cervical spine has a natural curve. The forward headrest does not support that natural curve. The longer the neck stays in flexion, the more likely it causes a disc bulge or muscle strain. That's really it.
