  • Don't you just love it when a plan comes together?! This week, all of the head-scratching, ruminating and cups of tea pay of as Michael installs the new lintel for the old wonky doorway. Using modern joists and antique wood, he creates a stunning feature for our Portuguese home. We may still have a long way to go but seeing the vision come together is a pretty wonderful thing!
    About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕
We're Michael & Becci (the humans) and Tilly (sassy English tortoiseshell cat), Alfie and Anoushka (Portuguese rescue dogs). After four years in Portugal and numerous dreams about renovating our own property, we've taken the plunge and are renovating a schist stone house and its outbuildings in Figueiró dos Vinhos. We're doing most of the work ourselves (or... Michael is!) and we'll be stepping back in time to create a character property with as many original features and antiques as possible.
Join us for the journey and don't forget to like, subscribe and comment! We love hearing from you 💛

I don’t think you need to camouflage all of the new material. It’s old and new - restored. Beautiful in any case. Good work :)

Really appreciate the care and attention you both bring to your work. Loved that you plan to use even that small piece of wood in the future Michael and the editing is getting better all the time Becci. Being a Tilly fan I love those little glimpses of her. Regards from Australia

Great Job! Those old facing lintels look nice, and will look better over time.
With the 2 modern wood door headers bolted together, that should be strong. However, you can make them stronger, like a laminated beam. Either with simple wood glue to hold them together. Or, the best method using thickened epoxy resin, (wet the beams first, with un-thickened epoxy resin). If you do laminate them together, the threaded bar will help align and hold them as flat as they can be. Though clamps would help.
Making the modern wood a laminated beam, means you may be able to notch the bottom over the doorway. Even just 1 or 2 inches, (2 - 5 centimeters),. It will give more head room on the lintel. And yet probably not loose any noticeable strength. Leaving the in-wall and top of the interior wall part of the laminated beam full height will add strength. Both to the the laminated part over the doorway, and to the walls.
PS - I saw a bug, (termite?), after you cut one of the old wood pieces. So make sure you use some kind of bug killer treatment on those old wood pieces. (And new wood too, for that mater.)
