#43 - WHO Said Renovating a Stone House in Portugal Would Be Easy?
After a weekend away in the Algarve visiting friends (hence the lack of video last week), we're back to catch you up on the latest beam-installing sagas. Michael finishes off the smaller room but hits another hurdle when it comes to replacing the door lintel. What's the best plan of attack?
About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕
We're Michael & Becci (the humans) and Tilly (sassy English tortoiseshell cat), Alfie and Anoushka (Portuguese rescue dogs). After four years in Portugal and numerous dreams about renovating our own property, we've taken the plunge and are renovating a schist stone house and its outbuildings in Figueiró dos Vinhos. We're doing most of the work ourselves (or... Michael is!) and we'll be ...

#42 - We Hit MORE Challenges with the Beams but Add Some Fabulous Antiques to the Outdoor Shed!
Просмотров 9 тыс.14 дней назад
Ah, renovations one step forward and two steps back! After a new delivery of beams, Michael gets to work installing them again, only to hit a few new problems and head-scratchers along the way. He finds some time to unwind with his usual love of tidying things up (!) and displaying our new antique finds. About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕 We're Michael & Becci (the humans) and Tilly (sassy English tortoiseshell ...
#41 - Pointing the Old Stone Walls & Adding Antiques to Our Shed
Просмотров 8 тыс.21 день назад
The hot weather brings some cooler jobs for Michael, which include setting up the outdoor shed (Becci's office) with some of our favourite antiques and making a start on the external pointing. We've found a ready-made mix so give that a try and the results seem quite promising! What do you think of the colour? At the end of the week, we also get our new joist delivery, meaning we can get stuck ...

This week, we both get to work ripping out rotten wood from the other outbuildings before taking down a dividing wall while saving the bricks in the process. We also make another discovery in the process... About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕 We're Michael & Becci (the humans) and Tilly (sassy English tortoiseshell cat), Alfie and Anoushka (Portuguese rescue dogs). #39 - Rebuilding an Old Stone Doorway at Our Portuguese Restoration Project
Просмотров 10 тыс.Месяц назад
We start the week with a clear-out in one of our outbuildings before Michael continues to remove the dreaded render... Then, he gets to work rebuilding the old stone doorway between the two downstairs rooms. Using his 'rock store' he soon turns his hand to becoming a master stonemason! #38 - DISASTER with the Joists - Time to Finish Some Overdue Jobs at Our Renovation Project!
Просмотров 10 тыс.Месяц назад
What a week...! From twisted joists that we're not sure we can use to dramatic thunderstorms, it's all going on at Casa das Parreirinhas this week! Thankfully, it gives Michael time to catch up on a few overdue projects like finishing off the render on the front of the house. #37 - Removing ROTTEN Beams Before They Fall Down & Restoring Old Stone Doorways
Просмотров 9 тыс.Месяц назад
Replacing the floor joists continues this week as Michael removes more floorboards to discover VERY rotten beams. It's amazing that they even held our weight and the rubble as we worked upstairs! He also continues with restoring the downstairs doorway and we both get to work with the new chipper. #36 - We Have a FLOOR Again - Installing More Joists & Getting to Work on the Wonky Stone Doorway
Просмотров 27 тыс.Месяц назад
We're back...and Michael's straight to work fitting more joists and clearing more land. Things really start to come together this week as he adds OSB boards to some of the joists. He also starts work on the wonky doorway which appears to have some very questionable lintels! And, watch as he uncovers our secret garden across the road...and gets a visit from a very special guest! About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕...
#35 - Salvaging as MUCH as Possible From Our Restoration Project in Portugal
Просмотров 8 тыс.2 месяца назад
We're about to head off on a much-needed break with Becci's family, which means Michael's in full tidying mode! As well as working to the up-coming land-clearing deadline, he's tidying up all of the wood we've salvaged from the house so far. We're keen to use as much of this wood as possible, so we need to store it until we can re-use/re-purpose it. You'll also find him cleaning up an old stone...
#34 - Clearing the Land Before Fire Season & Removing Floors in the House
Просмотров 7 тыс.2 месяца назад
As summer approaches, the land has to take priority as we get ready for the looming fire season. We're so lucky to have this land but it can feel a bit of a liability as you try to meet the deadline for having your land cleared. But, thankfully, the weather is on our side with some cloudy days! And on the days it is too warm, Michael heads inside to carry on removing floors and old beams to fit...

#30 - HARD Work Digging Out the Cellar Floor Using a Laser Level

You can't beat a good bit of rumination & pontification in the afternoon. It's a bit like playing chess, you've got to be thinking of 10 moves ahead before acting. Great work again and so careful and precise, the beauty of doing almost everything hand to hand is you’ll know every square inch of the building and all its quirks. For the window you could notch the joist and it will be perfectly ok, the span is tiny for such a chunk of wood but the stone strength is the unknown. Alternatively you could put a trimming joist across the front of the stone and fix a trimmed joist into it. If it was me personally, I’d notch the joist and forget about it. It’ll be reet! 😂 I'd throw a beam across that doorway and keep the ceiling height flush, a lump of oak or even concrete. It’ll be interesting to see what you decide. Great progress well done 👍🏼 o

In regards to the doorway's header, (aka joist above the doorway), you could use shorter height header. And then have more of it / them, in fact the full width of the stone wall. The distance is trivial, and using more of them in parallel should add strength. Maybe even tie them into the floor joists further down the wall. This would allow you to put a slightly notched floor joist across the whole width of the door header. Tying both side's floor joists together would also help. That should give you perhaps 6 foot, 4 inch or more head room in the doorway. You can always write up some measurements and have a structural engineer review any plan. You can use the joists that are not straight, for noggins. They should be enough square lengths to fill in either mid-span or end locations for noggins. (For the un-initiated, noggins are very short pieces that go at 90 degree from the floor joists to both stabilize the joists. And have a place to nail down floor boards at the mid-span & wall sides.) Good luck.

Since im not there to see the exact situation with the beam going over the window I can’t be sure but my general thought is to not put a beam over the window. Put the beam to the side like you have the other beam to the side. Then tie those two beams to together with braces down the length of the beams.

Hello and greetings from Hell's Front Porch ( Palm Springs Ca). I do like your new finds, that is always fun. Michael, I'm not a Structural Engineer, but with my almost 40 years of construction experience, I see no reason you can't notch that joist to install over that lentil. With your floor sheathing on top of it and attached to each joist adjacent to it and beyond, the load will transfer and you should have no issues. JMHO. Best wishes always, Moody.

Love the new office space - got to love a fabulous bit of old wood. Also loved the ingenious use of an old fork to hang up the strimmer! And the pointing looks great! "BioEcological" just means they can charge more lol. The colour looks nice, but the problem you might have is if you decide to go the cheaper "mix your own" route then the colour of the sand is going to make a difference. The colour can change between loads etc. You might have to do one side at a time haha Loved the drone shots of your strimming - its all looking great - keep up the excellent work :)
