Portugal on a Postcard
We're Michael & Becci. After four years in Portugal and numerous dreams about renovating our own property, we've taken the plunge and are about to renovate a schist stone house and its outbuildings in Figueiró dos Vinhos. We're doing most of the work ourselves (or... Michael is!) and we'll be stepping back in time to create a character property with as many original features and antiques as possible.

#57 - Meeting the Deadline | Turning an Old Stone Outbuilding in Portugal into a Rustic Living Space
Work continues on the cabin extension this week (with a little help from Becci) but Michael also finds time to bring an old door back to life. With the first beam in place and all the rest prepped and ready to go in, the deadline for the end of March looks promising...!

#56 - Rainy Days & Renovations | Creating Extra Living Space in the Outbuilding of Our Stone Home
What a difference a week makes! After beautiful frosty weather last week, the rain has been torrential this week! But, we haven't been washed away and Michael's made great progress in the outbuilding next to the cabin. After re-building the stone pillar, he installed a central beam ready to hang joists off. This is going to give us another huge area to extend our current bijoux cabin and much-n...

One wet camera later and we are back! This week, we recap on some of the jobs we've been doing while we've been out of action removing render in the courtyard and installing beams before diving back into the outbuilding to extend our current living accommodation. About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕 We're Michael & Becci (the humans) and Tilly (sassy English tortoiseshell cat), Alfie and Anoushka (Portuguese rescu...
#54 - Everyone Gets Involved | Creating a Raised Stone Flowerbed, Rebuilding Old Walls & Gardening
What doesn't Michael do this week?! From bagging up rubble ready to take to our lovely friends @hotkeysportugal next week to creating a new raised bed to protect one of the olive tree's roots, it's all going! He even finds time to help Becci prune wisteria and install the wood burner, just in time for a Christmas film! About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕 We're Michael & Becci (the humans) and Tilly (sassy English...
#53 - From Dawn 'til Dusk | Working on the Stone Outbuildings, Pruning Olive Trees & More Antiques
This week, it feels like there aren't enough hours in the day! Michael works from dawn 'til dusk emptying the outbuilding next to the cabin and doing his usual pottering around! For those who missed the last update, we're creating this new space for extra storage (we're currently paying for storage) using some of the wonky beams from the main house. And we're hoping to create extra living space...
#52 - Winter is Coming | Replacing Broken Roof Tiles and Pruning Olive Trees & Vines
As winter approaches, Michael gets to work fixing some old broken roof tiles and we get busy with some much-needed pruning of the olive trees and grapevines. We've managed to harvest a few olives in the process but the crop hasn't been great this year. Hopefully, a good prune will help this in the coming years, though! Finally, Michael also begins to empty out the barn nextdoor to the cabin in ...
#51 - Pointing Exterior Walls with a LIME Mortar Mix & Restoring Our Latest Antique Finds
This week, Michael makes the most of the autumn sunshine by cracking on with the pointing on the side wall. He also cleans up some fabulous antiques we've recently bought...one of which has a new home in our cabin. For anyone interested, we're using Topeca Kaltech Joint pointing mix. @topeca1196 About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕 We're Michael & Becci (the humans) and Tilly (sassy English tortoiseshell cat), Alf...
#50 - AGING New Pine Beams with Vinegar & Wire Wool for a Rustic Look at Our Renovation Project
It's an exciting week at our Portuguese renovation project because we start to experiment with how we can age and distress the new pine beams without using any chemicals or stains. Using a vinegar and wire wool mixture we get some great results! What do you think? Our UK friends may have also noticed that we made our TV cameo on Help! We Bought a Village on Channel 4. We were featured on Monday...
#49 - Making a RUSTIC Gate to Access Our Land in Central Portugal
This week, Michael puts his woodworking skills to the test by building a gate for us to access the back terraces. It's rudimentary and rustic but works and looks good...just like most things around here! In between, he's back at his beams and is over halfway by the end of the week. About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕 We're Michael & Becci (the humans) and Tilly (sassy English tortoiseshell cat), Alfie and Anoushk...
#48 - A TOUGH Week at Our Renovation Project in Central Portugal
It's a tough week this week... but that's life! Michael continues to add character to the beams (with a little "help" from Becci and the dogs!). We also get a reminder of how vulnerable we are when it comes to surrounding fires when one starts up less than 1 km away from us. It's a close call that's made us realise how we need to do even more land clearing ahead of next summer. About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕...
#47 - Making the NEW Look OLD & Fixing the Beams in Place at Our Portugal Renovation Project
This week, Michael continues using the draw knife to give the new beams their quirky, aged effect. He also tries out some treatments to see which works best before fixing the beams into place. And, he has a look at some of the wood from the partition walls to see if they'll clean up as floorboards. #46 - Mastering Woodworking Skills - Using a Draw Knife on the New Joists at Our Renovation Project
This week, Michael masters a new woodworking skill by using a KIRSCHEN draw knife to help age the wood joists and add some character back into the room. What do you think? Watching the video back he was mortified at his first attempt on the off-cut ("You can't show that!") but practice makes perfect and I'm sure you'll agree the beams are starting to look much more authentic for the building! T...
ONE YEAR TIMELAPSE | Our Old Stone Home Renovation Project in Central Portugal
What a year...! Michael will often say he doesn’t feel like he’s done as much as he’d hoped over the last year, but I think this video proves otherwise! Since we moved here in July 2023, he’s spent hundreds of hours chipping render off walls, removing rotten wood and landscaping. And over the last month, he’s started to put things back. There’s still a LONG way to go but what a journey so far. ...

New subscriber. What a beautiful home you have!
Oh thank you so much! ☺️
Oh Tilly! 🙀For some reason I thought you said Nooo when Becci asked if she was doing a good job! (Thats cats for you). Regards from Australia and Remy 💚🐈⬛
Haha 😅 probably! She's very critical! ♥️♥️♥️
Thank you ♥️
👋💛
Michael I appreciate you filling us in on the work in hand. Watching you I have come to appreciate your patience and thoroughness. Love the door! Becci thanks for editing in some lovely shots of the beauty that surrounds you and good to see you in front of the camera on a Sunday. Regards from Australia and hello Tilly 💚🐈⬛
Thank you so so much ☺️♥️ 🐈
Just a question, why you have to use a paint brush to put treatment on? Is it not possible to spray with a sprayer?
I'm not sure but the brush gets into all the cracks and things ☺️
Why didn't you clean the hole out before you put the board in so you didn't have to take it back out?
A little bit extra needed removing ☺️
Making wonderful process! These older stone houses are showpieces when done. Staying the course those first two years seems to especially be the trick so the two of you are right on track. Meanwhile you're not in and amongst so much of the nonsense of the world, you're keeping in shape, your dog's think they've died and gone to heaven and you're slowly getting to know more and more. Not a bad deal. ♥️🇨🇦
Thank you so much ☺️♥️ we are really lucky 🇵🇹 have a lovely weekend!
Nice one mate carry on with the good work injoy it you 2 all the best
Thanks so much 😊
Nice episode guys
Thank you ☺️
Please puts artificial intelligence in português the Brasil...
Well done Michael and Becci. Project has come a long way in a year. Can you recommend a realtor in your area?
Thank you ☺️ it's best to look on Idealista to see everything but Chavetejo and Casa Rural are great!
@@PortugalonaPostcard much appreciated, there is so much info on the internet but nothing like first hand knowledge. Have a great weekend.
Hi! The door looks fantastic! Good idea not to sand it to keep its original beauty. Congrats Michael.
Thanks so much ☺️
May I suggest using a roller, for your other jobs ❤
Thank you ☺️
It was nice to see Becky!
Thank you ☺️
if you dont mind me asking where did you get those nice wood joists also good afternoon from coimbra
We don't mind at all ☺️ Madeiaze in Ansiāo.
So much for less talk and more work!! Just need that coffee cup to come back !!😁
It would be nice if you could edit a little more. It takes you five minutes to take out one stone and before you put it back, you go to something else. There's so much of your videos where all you're doing is looking or showing scenery. At the rate you're going, it will take hundred years to get this project's done.
I miss Michael’s commentary. It was nice to have some idea about what he is doing and why. Regards from Australua 💚🐈⬛
Or even Australia, lol
Thank you ♥️ I know, we've been lacking the last couple of weeks! More coming next week ☺️
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys 🙏 good work 👍😁
Thank you ☺️💛🇵🇹
Love your videos, I'm so glad you made longer videos! Yea!! Thanks great stuff keep it up you both are doing an awesome job.!
Oh thank you so much ☺️♥️
❤
👋💛
Again, love the new format, photography, camera, camera angles, but I do miss Michael yapping Yorkshirelike as well! Perhaps a bit more of his bone dry narrative? Not too much tho, like Salt Bae, but Salt Michael! A sprinkle of Yorkshire salt! Yes!!
🤣 brilliant! Tha wish is our command! ♥️
He is ace, I watch because he’s the dude that does. Michael, you’re a star mate, low swinging bollocks aside, you’re smashing it fella. 👍
Hi, nice and wet 😅 no worries carry on with the good work injoy you 2, good weekend
Thanks so much ☺️ have a good weekend too!
Mate lifting them beams would have my testicles banging on my ankles, fair play to ya.
From my brick built cement mortared ivory armchair in the uk 😊 I’d suggest going less carefully on mortaring each stone and joint on the fill, but spend more time on the scrape, wire brush and clean up afterwards. I think your productivity would be much higher. Says Simon from Birkenhead who’s only experience of lime is in a pint of carsberg 30 years ago. But hey, I mean well 😂
😅 thanks, Simon. Appreciate it 👍
Michael you are a machine, getting that all done, carried and up on your own. It makes me think of how it must've been when they built the place originally, minus the tools as well. Awesome progress and effort again, much respect.👍❤️🇿🇦
Thank you so so much ☺️♥️ I know, it's crazy to think they probably hand carved all the stone out too... 😰 Have a good weekend!
Have a wonderful weekend your side as well. 👍
Your place is looking amazing with the colour of the stone, the citrus trees and the dark earth. You are lucky to be getting some rain, we have been melting in 38°C here in Cape Town.❤🇿🇦
Thank you - as always!! ♥️ Eeeek! That's warm 😅 hard to imagine at the moment! ☔
What a great episode, a nice break from the musical timelapses. I really appreciate you guys for making these videos.
Oh thank you so much 😊 means a lot!
These barrels would look fantastic as a base for a kitchen island. Just a thought.
Ooo great idea. Thank you! 😊
Hi Michael! CONGRATULATIONS! Your skills and dedication amaze me. Do you speak both Portuguese? Good luck with your project!
Oh thank you so much! We're learning Portuguese so can speak a little... It's hard but we're trying! 😊
Have u not thought of using block and tackle ,save your back Those beams most way 75kgs or more
Jaysus Michael be careful you don't put your back out!! Lugging that massive joist around 😱
😅 I (Becci) know!! I was cringing while I was editing it! ♥️
@ i nearly also commented ‘Becki does your heart jump out of your skin when you see/edit what’s been recorded’ 🤣🤣🤣 but then I thought you know he’s still alive 😂😂
😅 great minds!! X
Too hard a job for one man. You have great courage!!!
Thank you so much 😊
Less talk more work eh "Martin" ?
😅💪
😊
♥️
Well done I’m happy when see you videos
Thank you so much 😊
Υοu must moist the wall before doing any extra mortar and stone work! Use the back side of the trowel to really push the mortar in!
Thank you ☺️
Two things that would scare me most -digging out mud and stones from a wall as deep as my arm and trying to lift something heavier than me whilst on a ladder! Phew, need a stiff drink just watching hahaha! Well done, nothing like a "mother-in-law" deadline to keep things on track :)
Hahaha, I (Becci) could only watch it while I was editing because I knew he'd survived unscathed 🤣 don't know what he's been up to until I watch it back 🙈♥️
I have a ruin I have to work on when I arrive to my land. Do you treat the mortar and stones for bugs before you mortar in between? My little ruin is not going to be incorporated into my house it's too small but I will be working on it non the less. Perfect rainy day project. Obrigado. Gina in Upstate New York moving to Portugal in 2025
Hi Gina ☺️ that sounds lovely! We haven't treated the stones or mortar, no. Haven't noticed any bugs in the walls...just the wood! ♥️
@@PortugalonaPostcard thanx great job. Appreciate it.
are you sure your not a dentist in a former life?
🤣
hi from coimbra :)
Olá ☺️
I suppose önce all the important structural work is done things will get a bit easier for u
In theory! 😅 Thank you ☺️
