  • We start the week with a clear-out in one of our outbuildings before Michael continues to remove the dreaded render... Then, he gets to work rebuilding the old stone doorway between the two downstairs rooms. Using his 'rock store' he soon turns his hand to becoming a master stonemason!
    About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕
We're Michael & Becci (the humans) and Tilly (sassy English tortoiseshell cat), Alfie and Anoushka (Portuguese rescue dogs). After four years in Portugal and numerous dreams about renovating our own property, we've taken the plunge and are renovating a schist stone house and its outbuildings in Figueiró dos Vinhos. We're doing most of the work ourselves (or... Michael is!) and we'll be stepping back in time to create a character property with as many original features and antiques as possible.
Join us for the journey and don't forget to like, subscribe and comment! We love hearing from you 💛

Having built some stone walls myself, I know how difficult it can be finding the right stone, lucky you have the “stone store!” It turned out really nice, fine job there. I have to say, though, the best part of the episode was your sweet dog helping with the floor!!!

For the pointing, there's a special sand, its almost yellow, you can buy for it.
You can also use colouring in the mortar.
I've seen both of them in videos and it became very lovely.

Yes 😊 that's just what we need. I think we've seen Martjin Doolaard using it on his channel. Thank you 💛

With the lime mortar, it would probably be better to wet the stones before using the mortar, Otherwise the dry stones will suck out a lot of the moisture in your mix. This will result in a weak bond.

Las parras son el mejor toldo. Más fresco y natural. Sólo hay q colocarlas sobre cuelgues

They are wonderful! I think next year we need to train them better...they'd started going under the roof tiles this year! Thank you 😊

I found air or sand blasting the most efficient and effective

Gosh the house wall looks magnificent with the render gone. The other job of removing the white off the stones inside is obviously tedious as well, but it really does improve the look. There is an attachment for a drill - a little hard wire brush head that would possibly make the job easier. Just a thought. Good job on all the work achieved. I am surprised that the cleaned out stone room is cooler Bec. Isn't your cabin made of stone as well? Best wishes

Thank you so much 😊 the cabin is stone but sits in the sun all day so it does get quite warm! 🥵 I'll have to do some temperature comparisons to see 💛
