    I see this is almost four years old but I’m still enjoying it. I love grocery stores.😂 I watch a lot of expat videos from multiple countries since it’s unlikely I’ll ever live out of the US and I enjoy getting an ‘on the ground’ idea of what living in different parts of world is like for expats. So far your channel is the best I’ve watched.

      this is not the biggest grocery store in france... there are MUCH bigger ones with 100(!) additional stores outside the grocery store and restaurants. These big grocery stores have about 50 cash checkouts.. or more...
      Carrefour de Villiers-en-Bière, en Seine et Marne, avec 24 700 m² de surface de vente.

    For many years we visited France from Portsmouth, England; a short drive to the Ferry Port for the 23:00 Ferry arriving in France at ~06:00 at any time of the year. One night in an Hotel or one or two weeks in a self-catering Gîte or a friends place. Of course, being English, we had to provide ourselves with "PG Tips Teabags" but otherwise we would seek out every local delicacy. Occasionally a Restaurant menu would confuse us! e.g. My wife ordered "ris de veau" that she thought was a rice (riz) dish. I swapped my order with hers and even requested a spoon to eat the delicious sauce.

    Hello,
    For chicken, but also for a whole bunch of other products, it's important to specify (compared to the more expensive price) that the standards of breeding or planting, feed given to animals, etc. are much more drastic in France than in the USA. In our country, no hormones, very few antibiotics, if at all, no GMOs, less sulphate, chemical dyes, etc.
    This is why Americans who come to France often find the taste of the products much better than in the United States.
    If you want to buy a good chicken, it's better to buy a "poulet fermier" for example.
    The breeding regions are also often very important.
    In France, we know for example that for beef we'll previle meat from Limousin. For poultry, we will rather choose Gers poultry, etc. (Limousin and Gers are French regions, like Normandy or Brittany. And each region in France has its culinary specialties)

    The bonne maman cookies are very good too. But my favorite cookie are Galettes Bretonne with Butter de la Bretagne. When we as germans are in supermarches (this one you show is far away from the biggest) the only US or british Product we buy is tea. Very good also the Pulain chocolate powder, contents more than 50% chocolate amd less sugar. And try the various of milk based products, fresh fish and seafood 🙂And don´t buy wine at the supermarket, take your choice during a degustation at the winemaker. That is more important that to buy eggs directly.

I work in a Fromage factory (chevre), our own brand is upper price range but most of our production is store own branded. Intermarche, E. Leclerc, Super U, Casino & Carrefour are buyers. So when you savour that "crottin" you will know why it's so good with a glass of cabernet Anjou or muscadet sur lie !

    The charcuterie is where you'll find all your cold-cuts meat. There are tons of salami, ham, etc. at the charcuterie. That would be the equivalent of lunch meats. The only difference is that the charcuterie has better quality cold cuts than regular processed lunch meats, and they'll cut it for you.

    Another thing you should mention is that all prices that you see have the VAT already included.

    • @mojojim6458
      @mojojim6458 5 лет назад +2

      Having the tax already included is a big deal for Europeans. Many Europeans compare it favorably to the practice in the US of showing the price before sales tax. The sales tax rate can vary from state to state in the US. Where I live it is 2.5% for food and 5.3% for everything else. No tax on prescriptions. I wonder what the tax percentage is in Europe. Could it be more than 5 or 6 percent? Since it's included in the price, the amount charged you does not have the prominence that it has in the US.

      @mkelling69 5 лет назад +2

    • @mojojim6458
      @mojojim6458 5 лет назад

      @@mkelling69 Thanks, Mark. Since I'm paying 5.3% in the US in addition to the price shown on the item I'm purchasing, and the price shown in France, and probably the rest of the EU, already has a 20% tax included in the price shown on the same item...who is paying more?

    • @mkelling69
      @mkelling69 5 лет назад

      @@mojojim6458
      I just look at the total price including whatever tax there is to determine who pays more since the tax, either VAT or sales tax, is not optional. Where I have lived in the US there has never been any extra taxes added to any food purchased in a grocery store (with the exception of hot prepared meals or other things sold in what the state considers ready to eat form which means with a fork or spoon included) so that makes it easy to see which is the higher cost.

    • @mojojim6458
      @mojojim6458 5 лет назад

      @@mkelling69 Well, I'm wagering that if you buy the same item twice, once with a 5.3% tax and once with a 20% tax, the purchase with the 20% tax will cost more.

    Prices for fresh fruit and veg shocked me compared to the UK, seems very expensive here in France. I’m still trying to find potato salad, I used to get a gorgeous one in from fromage frais in UK Lidl but can’t seem to find it here. I find Super U is good for vegetarians. You can’t get vege bacon but the soya bits are the substitute I use. The ladies in the supermarkets on the tills have been wonderfully helpful to us. I can get cheddar, my favourite cheese which I’m incredibly pleased about. There’s often a small British products section but it’s mega expensive and some items I never even saw in the UK.Jam isn’t generally cheap but I can get marmalade which is nice. Trying to find custard has anyone tried the creme anglaise, is it the same? Plenty of choice for coffee but tea isn’t cheap and limited selection.

    I just loved this! I bought a bottle of wine at Walmart last week... just for the pretty bottle (it had a floral motif in the glass). It was a whopping $17!! Upon closer inspection it was imported from France! LOL I couldn't believe Walmart was carrying it. The name of it is Fleurs de Prairie - Vin de Provence. I was looking for it but didn't see it on your wine aisle. ha Something else I've been buying here in the states is French Vanilla Pudding Petit Pot. It's to die for! It's expensive also. $2 for a single little small serving. I had to look up a recipe so I can start making it myself because I will never go back to American pudding. Now I'm going to have to go to Whole Foods and see if I can find that Gavottes brand. I'm having so much fun binge watching your fantastic videos!

And I really enjoy cereal for breakfast. Regarding egg processing, I live in Mexico and they too do not remove the protective coating on eggs so they don't need to be refrigerated. I suspect the US is one of the few countries that does this.

    This channel is fantastic!! I love the patience and care you show the products, it allows us to see details, love it. I would like to know if it is possible for you to film a French cheese market. Personally, I think that French traditional, antique, and old fashion stores are amazing! especially those which sell cheese and charcuterie, they are lovely!! Thanks.

      Bonjour, thanks for watching! I just published a video a couple of hours ago (French market visit) that shows a bit of cheese. I'd love to do more videos on French cheese so maybe leave a comment on that new video and if others are interested too, it'll be feedback for me to definitely do a cheese video!

    We have it here in Quebec in a Maxi store , some don't click it back in .Many bring it close to their bus stop, or some to the metro, some in my area straight to their houses .We have seen lots of homeless people use them for their personal cart .May use for this product .Some stores hire people to pick them up in our city

    Processed meat more limited in France?!? What is charcuterie then? And the butcher stand is not like in America. More choices. Different cuts. And the chicken being more expensive, that's the "Poulet fermier", farm free range chicken. Delicious.

    * I think you didn't mentioned but I guess it's important to be told, prices are always taxes included, so no bad surprises at the cashier when it's time to pay.
    * Also, for each product, price per piece or pack, packet, is indicated but also price per kilo (or liter for liquids) is displayed and very useful ^_^
    * I guess machines 24/24h don't have much success, I stay in a small town, but 2 machines for pizza and an another one for fresh milk closed after few months ...
    * Idea : it could be nice to display pets shop or also the food pets aisle.

    What you haven't mentioned is the smell in a French supermarket. It must be the charcuterie, bread and most of all the cheese. Its unique..!

    Thank you for another great video.
    I too, love the surgelés Pickard. In the the dairies/deserts section fromage blanc (thick yoghurt), the compotes and chocolate mousses are my favs.
    A visit in an Electrical/Technology store like Darty or a Home and Furniture store would be great.

    Aldi is a German-based store, as is Trader Joe's (though maybe that one is without the 's also?). The only store in the U.S. that has the coin slots on their carts is Aldi. When you described this, it immediately made me think of them. Is it much more common in Europe or other parts of the world?
    Is the "chocolate bread" you spoke of brioche, or something else?
    Love your videos!

    8:48 I'll buy the pre-cut mushrooms from the produce section and add them to a frozen sausage pizza.
    I like watching your grocery store videos. From what I've seen, Americans shouldn't have too much trouble navigating their way around a French grocery store. While they don't have drug stores or pharmacies attached it's still pretty familiar.

    écrémé (green caps) is 0.1%, demi-écrémé (blue) is generaly 1.5% not 2% and entier (red caps) is 3.5% and more for milk. The same colour scheme is applied to cream or fresh cheese but the percentages are different (~0%, ~4% and ~8%).
