I enjoy visiting supermarkets in foreign countries to give me a small taste of what the local residents experience and to see how they differ from what we experience at home.

I've stayed in places on a couple of vacations in France where I had access to kitchenettes, so I had the opportunity to not only brouse the isles of the grocery stores (a favorite passtime while there) but also do a bit of cooking. The Bonne Mamman chocolate deserts are so good - I wish they had them in the US.

Two of my favorite grocery store products are Bonne Maman's semoule au lait vanille naturelle (vanilla semolina pudding) and vast array of chilled desserts such as mousse, flan and pot de creme in unusual flavors like fig, noisette or currant. Also love the frozen prepared seafood dishes that come in small ceramic ramekins with flavors such as Coquille St. Jacques. I still have a collection of those ramekins. We have nothing like these in the US!

Wow, you gave me such a blast of nostalgia, especially with the apericubes (olive and blue cheese were my favourites as a kid a long, long time ago) and the whole yogurt and dairy desserts aisle (some time ago I had a craving for Marie Morin brand chocolate mousse and couldn’t satisfy it, it was bad lol). I miss French butter so much too - ah, having some beurre d’Échiré on a piece of baguette, perhaps with some real bilberry jam…

A raclette dinner is so fun. I have a raclette grill, a yummy little-prep dinner for sort of a community meal. It’s hard to find raclette cheese here in SoCal but a gruyere subs fine. I offer non traditional raw beef, salmon, instead of veal, and boiled potatoes, bread, tons of accoutrements like cornishons, cocktail onions, etc. A very unique and easy way to host a dinner for six, if you’ve got an inexpensive raclette grill and an outlet near your table!. And the stories to tell about the Swiss/French/Austrian/whoever mountain sheep or cattle Alpine wranglers melting their night cheese over a fire, they’re worth the price of the grill. Thanks Diane and happy holidays! 💃💐

Bonjour. I love shopping in french supermarkets. We normally visit Paris in Nov and return with grocery store cookies for our holiday open house. My go-to product is “Gervita”, plain fromage blanc with a top layer of unsweetened whipped cream. Being diabetic really limits me to the supermarket products I can have. I add stevia to it. Next to the Boursin is Tartare. I did a side-by-side taste test, and I like the garlic herb Tartare better than the Boursin one.
For a future supermarket video, may I suggest a focus on “bio” and “diététique” products. There are a lot of people who have dietary restrictions and that could be very helpful. I recently discovered the brands “Dukan” and “Gayelord Hauser”.

I work at a major supermarket chain in the Chicago area. I like seeing the similarities and differences between American stores and those in other parts of the world. I know most French grocery stores don’t have pharmacies or even over the counter medication. I like that most American stores also have carts like the one at 25:19. I’m shopping for myself so I find them handy, especially if I’m picking up stuff like canned goods, a gallon of milk or some pop which get heavy quick.

    • @puccaland
      @puccaland 5 месяцев назад +1

The pharmacies are everywhere in France like bakeries so there is no need for one in a supermarket. And when supermarkets are in a shopping area or a mall, there are always one or several pharmacies in the same mall.

This post is exactly what I needed as I’m seriously missing my time in France. Gigi is wonderful and a great companion to me.
Im having some friends over this Saturday. Making galettes with organic buckwheat. A variety of savory options and sweet options for dessert. Getting good cider here is a challenge. The best is by Stella Artois. But i am surrounded by local wineries in cape may. One of my favorites, Hawk Haven is making decent wines also makes cider from apples grown in NJ. It’s so good, brut with an alcohol level of 7 %. Please give your dad and Tom my best wishes. Josef.

About butter on baguette in France... you don't get that. No restaurant will serve you butter with baguette. You need to ask and they look at you funny when you do, but, yes, butter is great on a baguette. A nice baguette sandwitch jambon/beurre or jambon brie with butter and dijon mustard on it is great. Don't forget a little vino with that.

French here, about "Le Petit Marseillais" brand : Marseilles soap is in our blood, i'm french from no place in particular due to large changes during my young years, it's everywhere the same ! This brand is special, as they imply in their name the inheritance of a 2600 years old city's traditions and rules, and as far as i know, they stand up to a high level of quality, with very few ingredients (like water, an oil and sodium hydroxyde complex as soap agent, perfumes of course, and by law, stabilisers), and kids friendly range of products.
We don't say it much, but that's a brand we are really really proud of 😅❤ Things we speak only with very close people, yet spreading like wildfire 😅🤣
There is 3 way to do things : the good way, the bad way, and the french way 😉❤🖖

In my country the chips are also not with the crackers. Tooooootally different food classes. Sometimes, the chips are almost their own aisle but they are also with corn chips, doritos, Cheetos, puffed snacks. Sometimes one side of the aisle is chips and the other side is pretzels. If not, the pretzels sometimes can be found near the crackers. Chips and crackers - never together.

    • @chucku00

Crackers are often near the liquor secion (pastis, whisky...), so du to their sheer volume chips are often located in another section, ususally the adjacent ones.

By French standards it's a middle sized supermarket. Stores like Leclerc, Carrefour or Auchan are easily three times bigger, that's why they are called "hypermarchés" where you can buy bicyles, many automotive products, and a large selection of shoes and clothes. They also have a "parapharmacie" section where you can find specific brands usually sold in inner city "pharmacies" and stuff like colored contact lenses and contact lenses cleaning products.
