    Things that I found when I was in France was shocking to me in a way. The grocery store I went to when I was in Grenoble 9 years ago was similarly big and they had a huge yogurt aisle with a lot of unflavored yogurt. You don't find that kind of an aisle here in the US and the yogurt sold here is made with ingredients that shouldn't even be in our bodies to begin with. Another thing that shocked me was the cheese, especially ones labeled "lait cru" (raw milk). Raw milk is illegal in the US and that was very cool to try some of those cheeses and not get any illness from it as our stupid country claimed a long time ago. Since my experience in France, I have been drinking my coffee black and have learned to eat quality ingredients and read labels at the grocery store.

      I had my favourite cheese here in the States for the longest time - gourmandise with cherries - but haven't been finding it for the past few years. Asked around, and found out that the U/S has been banning its import because it isn't pasteurised. Unfortunate that it isn't made with pasteurized cheese..

    • @Imaginexall
      @Imaginexall Год назад

      Tho I heard that americans can get easily ill eating our raw milk cheeses, because your bodies aren't used to the bacterias in it (for example, french women can't eat raw milk cheese during pregnancy, it can lid to listeriosis and toxoplasmosis infections).

    I discovered your channel recently and I watch it to practice my English too. I am French and I find it so funny to see foreigners being fascinated by French shops. Once I was shopping and I came across an American family (I think lol) who were marvelling at the yoghurts xD I never really realised how lucky we were to have so many good products in France. I was born here and I'm used to always shopping, eating healthy actually became normal and a habit for me. It's when I travel that I realise the differences and also that we don't realise how lucky we are, we complain too much!
    But I find it fascinating to see the differences in culture, I would love to travel to the US one day, the skyscrapers have always impressed me! And maybe I'll find some unusual products in their shop too lol

    The flour aisle was the most amazing to me. In UK we have plain flour or self-raising flour - and a few oddities like cornflour or wholemeal flour - all in all it occupies maybe 10 foot (3m) of aisle. A typical French supermarket will have a whole aisle devoted to flour - loads of different types for different breads/cakes/pastries etc.... Amazing....

    • @mayaklast6334
      @mayaklast6334 Год назад

      I experienced this in reverse recently. I'm French and the first time I went shopping to get ingredients for baking and making a cake in London I couldn't believe the small selection of baking stuff (including cooking chocolate... I could never even find real praliné and plain 60% cooking chocolate was so expensive 😅). I went to three supermarkets and combed through the aisles of Waitrose several times, certain I had missed the right one, before I had to admit defeat.
      I was really surprised. It hadn't crossed my mind things like that could be hard to find on the other side of the tunnel.

    Oh, how I missed going to France this year to do my Christmas shopping! French supermarkets do Christmas so much better than ours in the UK do - ours are just piles of cheap sweets, whereas in France there are those too, but also the lovely selection boxes you showed, and the hampers with jams or wine and paté (so useful as presents for one's elderly mother, who loves that kind of thing), and so on.... to say nothing of the smoked salmon (okay, you can get that here, too) or the foie gras with its gingerbread and onion or fig chutney..... I do hope that by next Christmas we will be able to travel again.

    Thanks, Diane. I love wandering around foreign grocery stores just to see what is similar or different. When we were in France in 2017, we stopped at at GIGANTIC Carreforre”(sp?) somewhere in the south of France. It was ginormous- bigger than the Costco here. They had everything. If they didn’t have it, you don’t need it. Some employees were on roller skates. They had fresh game - definitely authentic because the unskinned leg and hoof were there...... The whole place was fascinating. We got hopelessly lost in the dang parking lot - getting out was frustrating, but also hilarious. A tour of one of those giant stores would be interesting.

      Foie gras is usually eaten around year's end holidays, like christmas and new years eve.
      There's the cold version from conserves -the best being sterilized glass jars. Watch out if its actual complete foie gras and not mixed with a lower product like mousse de canard of stuff like that.
      Typically served as the entry dish with roasted toasts, maybe a pinch of salt if you dont find it salty enough and either chutneys (there are frenched variants like chutney de pommes du Calvados) or marmelade d'oignons and white wine.
      I lack culinary knowledge to perfectly describe the hot version, and anyway have eaten the cold one more often. You can do your own foie gras from a foie bought at the butcher and it can be better than any conserve would.

      FYI foie gras is eaten mostly during winter, because its made from goose liver: they usually fill their stomach themselves only at that of the year (I mean we force them, but they do it naturally too).
      Also, if by typical french food you're afraid to approach you mean, frog legs, snails, beef tongue/brain, etc... We don't usually eat them either :D From all of the "weird" french food, snails might be the only one "lots of french" have tasted (and it's awesome because of the sauce, garlic, parsley and butter, the snails themselves don't have much taste)... As for the rest of it, pretty uncommun even for us !

    I think I got just as emotional about being back in a French supermarket via video as I get from all the beautiful photos of the architecture, countryside etc in France. Cointreau flavoured cream - that's definitely a first for me. I am still surprised everytime I see the huge range of chocolate flavoured breakfast cereals in French supermarkets. I suspect it is not limited to supermarkets in France and that we in Australia with 2-3 varieties are the odd ones out.
    I love this sort of format with the brief intro and wrap up with well edited filming and interesting content. I liked that it was snappy and focussed particularly on the theme of Christmas. I create to dos to watch your longer videos but I never seem to get around to them. When I see anything above about 13 mins I think I don't have time to watch now - do it later. I was amazed at the deli section and the cheese section in the store. I was in a small town, St. Zacharie, and the local supermarche focused on a different cheese each week. They had a load of information about the cheese, where it was from, it's history etc. One thing I had difficulty with was milk. Confusing, all the kinds and types. The deli section was very different, with rabbits and more "raw" looking items. Great video. I hope you will go to some brocantes and vide grenier.

    What great memories of food shopping in Paris, Monoprix or Galleries Lafayette--you can't go wrong. One Christmas I was there, 2017?, and the theme was gold garnishes, The pastries were coated with a gold spray, there were huge grinders of gold salt and silver peppercorns (still have them as I couldn't bear to use them.) The most decadent thing was thinly sliced smoked salmon with the edges dipped in flakes of gold leaf. It was everywhere. We won't even mention the chocolates. I was there last October and still kick myself for not buying a vegetable scrubber shaped exactly like a large black truffle--28 Euros, but it would have looked astounding on my sink. Next time. I am really suffering from homesickness now.,,,,sob.

    When in other countries, I long to shop in the little stores that specialize in one thing...bakery, cheese, fruit, meat etc. But I find the supermarket much more user friendly. I don't have to keep asking prices and I'm not embarrassed when a piece of cheese is way too expensive. In the supermarket you know the size and price upfront and it is a more relaxed shopping experience. So I substitute romance for practicality.

    Love that you showed & discussed the need to weigh produce in some markets - NOT normal for the US and easily overlooked. Thanks also for showing & discussing the parking validation. Had kinda hoped you'd take a shopping cart and discuss how often you have to "pay" to get the cart then get your money back when you return it (looks like you just loaded up your shopping bag to carry them to the check-out). Again, those things that are not normal in the US and can trip us up when we are there are always helpful.

But if you forget, the cashier has a booklet filled will all the codes and they will weigh them for you and put in the code and it will price it right for you. Great share, Happy Holidays! I have tried foie gra in culinary school and found it buttery rich on a cracker with some cheese. Very interesting flavors.

    I love shopping in the French grocery store. My first experience was arriving in Lille on a Saturday afternoon and we drove to the Euralille centre. OMG! the parking garage was pure insanity. We had a rental car and I was positive that we were going to get the car damaged. We did find a spot and luckily all went well. My absolute favourite part of shopping in the French grocery store is the cheese and bread section. Once we settled in to our Airbnb i walked daily to the grocery store and tried so many different cheeses

    Yoghurt is BIG in France, so you’ll find literally several hundreds of references in any small city supermarket, with all kind of flavors (goût vanille means it’s just flavored, artificial unless explicitly mentioned), but also with natural fruit bites, different milks, etc. as well as many cream deserts like custards, mousses, …
    Paradise for any sweet palate (bec sucré, in French !!)

    This brings back memories of the times when I spent a month or two of the year in France (different regions) and would go to the supermarket. Some things are very similar to a supermarket in the U.S. or Canada while other things are different. I remember learning from my French friends with whom I stayed in Toulouse about weighing your own produce, and then seeing it again in Brittany. Glad you showed that. In the U.S., at least in Texas and California, both of which I know well, weighing your own produce isn't something I see, unless you're using the self-checkout, in which case you weight it on the fly. But you don't weigh your produce to obtain a priced sticker before taking it to the checker as you showed, and as I remember. Another thing I remember are the checkers don't stand like they do in the U.S. They all sit, and they don't bag anything for you. But I remember seeing the same thing in Spain and the UK too, so that must be pan-European. You forgot to show us that you need a coin to get a shopping cart (a caddie in France French?) With fewer and fewer people carrying change around, is that still a thing or has the 1 EUR coin been replaced for getting a shopping cart. It's a great concept because it encourages patrons to return the shopping cart to its spot to recover the 1 EUR coin.

    really missed our trip to France this year to celebrate our grandsons 5th birthday, but the one thing I miss are the bakery shops, but there was one supermarket that had mini pastry sampler, "box", about 6 different pasties times 2, last a couple afternoons, also Carrefour, had self scanning as one shopped through the store and placed in your trolley and when you arrived at the checkout, an attendant would just run her eye over your trundler and if it looked close to what was on your docket, away you went, very fast.
