    It's not that the city is trying to be like Laos or Thailand, but culturally they are historically linked and by lineage are one and the same with differences and evolution through 1000s of years of migration, interchange, and adaptation. I say this as a Lao-American who is also Chinese by family lineage. The modern hotels and progress you see and are referring to still makes references to traditional architecture. At some point modernity has to take place otherwise you would not have traveled to, enjoyed, and appreciate the local culture and area. Tourism benefits the locals as well. Without those modern buildings and accommodation I doubt you would have bothered to explore the city, people, culture, and local customs.

    What does Xishuangbanna mean in Chinese? In Lao it is actually Sipsongpunna, which means 12,000 rice fields.
    Similarly, take a look at cities in the western U.S., cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, etc, they retain the name because it was built and inhabited by the Spanish before Americans took over.
    It would be silly for you to say they try to brand themselves Spanish but that’s who the majority of the inhabitants are originally.

    Thai, Laos and the Dai people all belong to the same race Dai. Culture wise they are the same. So it doesn’t make it fake that they label themselves Thai or Laos and of course they are doing so to attract tourism. Also, funny if they call it “Dai” culture, the Thai or Laos may say china “steal” their culture like South Koreans saying Korean Chinese stealing their culture. I just wouldn’t overthink it.

      I am Thai and I know Sipsongpanna very well. The Dai or Tai people are the same race as the Thai, Lao, and Shan people. We are related and have a common ancestor. Our languages can be understood by each other. Our culture is the same. So it's not stealing, it's our identity.

    This is the original Thai and Lao culture.
    In Thai we call the Dai people "Big Thai" or "Thai Yai - ไทยใหญ่" and we all know we come from there that's why we call it big Thai and that's why Thai and Lao have the same culture as the Dai people.

      @LMAO4real Why would Xishuangbanna people leave Yunnan go to Cambodia and go back to Xishuangbanna to build houses and temples just like Cambodian people?
      Maybe when Thais and Lao people left Xishuangbanna and settle in Mon land we started to build houses and Khmers started to copy us. Xishuangbanna architecture looks the same as Thai and Lao as it would only make sense we build what we know when we left Xishuangbanna and Khmers were just slaves who copied us.
      Trosok Peam (Sweet Cucumber) was a Royal Gardener who killed the original Khmer king and proclaimed himself as king in 1373. Now the slaves are free from Khmers are free from the Khom, the original people who built Angkor Wat.
      Since Trosok Peam (Sweet Cucumber) became king, Khmers can't hold on to their land or build anymore temple.
      Why don't you tell the world that the real Khmers are slaves?

    Hey Guys! Love your channel. Your video is so nice and good telling story. I'm Thai and I'm going to Xishuangbanna next month. It seems like they tried to be Thai and Laos .. this is non sense. I think the real Dai are living outside the city and Chinese come for business so this why it is ridiculous. I hope to see real Xishuangbanna not a them park for tourist attention.

( PS don’t bother with the not wild elephant tourist trap). Don’t get me wrong, I love the place, but feel Xishangbanna is the bottom of the barrel.

    That’s a great review of the area. Great videography too! Sadly all of the minority cultures are just a way for the Han majority to come in, be materialistic and make money. It’s not that the local culture seems to be trying to be Thai or Lao. They really have the same culture. Dai minority and Thai are the same people. It’s just that, at some point in the past, the chinese took the land. Yes this was the way of those ancient days. It’s just a shame that Han still exploit minorities.

    • @glowndark1
      @glowndark1 Год назад +8

      "It’s just a shame that Han still exploit minorities." Do you have any statistic to back up your claim that all these business establishments are owned by the Han? or it's just your assumption? or Han is always the bad guy? well, at least they did not subjugate the people and culture into extinction like Australia, USA and Canada. As a matter of fact, China preserves their culture as you can see their traditional style buildings and temples are still pretty much in-tacked, and more than that, you still see their traditional scripts and writings on road signs and shops, can you say the same about the colonized continents I mentioned above?
