I was in Ban Na with my mom and dad during the winter of 2020, as she completed her surgery and two chemotherapy sessions. This was the last trip I took with her, and I still miss her today.
I don't know what is happening recently, but both my girlfriend's mother and my cousin's wife's mother got cancer, both chinese women in their early 60s...I have lost count on how many people around my family and their relatives and friends who got cancer just last year...so painful to go through with this.
How interesting…. This is like a mini Thailand in China! The crackling pork, chilli dip in metal pot, sticky rice on banana leaves and night market simply remind me of Chiang Mai
You certainly show in this video just how big China really is. From the cold northeast of last few weeks videos to today’s video all the to the tropic south. I mean i always know China is big and diverse but only now i realize just how big it truly is. Thank you, Amy.
OMG welcome to my hometown! I have been watching your videos for years, and I always hope to see if one day you could visit here. YOU NOW MADE IT! I hope the next step if with your parents hahaha, I cant wait to see how your dad reacts to the 'bug' buffet.
Oh my, China is really a treasure trove for many wonderful food and cultural experiences. The food you had in this video was mind-blowing. Amy, I wish you a pleasant stay and hope for more content from this beautiful region, please...
Xishuangbanna is my hometown. It has been over 7 years since last time I went home. I spent my whole childhood there. I can’t wait to go home this year since the COVID restriction has been lifted. I miss the food, the scenery and my family terribly. Thank you for making this video. I find out that most of introduction of my hometown is in Mandarin. Now I can finally show my husband this video. BTW if you don’t have this planned, you might want to try some local desert / drink store, like 冰冰凉,缅丽, they have many interesting desert there like 睡印椰。And there are a few very famous bbq shop in 勐海,which is very different bbq style than 景洪
Amy's videography and editing is so well done ! China offers such diversity of cultures, geography, and architectures - mind blown for taking us to Xishuangbanna !
Fact that the city is so close to Thailand, I can see a lot of Thai style things in your video. The food won't look out of place in a Thai restaurant neither. Tourism has truly picked up its pace in China during the CNY.
Dai is a transliteration of Thai, so the Dai of China are related to Thai people of Thailand. What a fun place to visit, definitely on my list. Waiting for tourist visas to China to open again...
Ordering what the waitress recommends is a great service. Not just mind-blowing, but also appetizing from the barbecue platter, I think I am going to enjoy this.
When the China-Laos railway direct-through passenger services begin, I think Amy should drop a visit to both Yunnan and Laos, that must be very interesting.
That's really cool. Reminds me a lot of Thailand, though that's not surprising since Dai and Thai are, I've been told, basically the same ethnic group.
Yes, but actually the culture of xishuangbanna’ dai ethnic group is more similar to Myanmar’s, even the taste of food and the language is also quite similar, just different tones😂
i love xishuangbanna when i visited years ago. I remember the BBQ being so good that i kept going back to the vendor to buy more. super jealous of your huge platter of food. Can't wait to see your next episode.
I love love sticky rice with mok het, kao karb, and keb moo. I grew up eating this in my Lao culture. This looks amazing and I need to go visit this place.
Oh my goodness, I should never watch your videos when I'm hungry 😭 On another note, I'd love to see what the other less touristy areas of the region are like, it must be super interesting!
If you don't already.....subscribe to Dianxi Xiaoge, rural, non-touristy. Her family name is Ah, she is Ah PenJie. This is the part of Yunnan province that I love. By the way, everybody talks about Xishuangbanna's elephants, but the rain forest is also home to several rare species of almost magical wild cats!
Very southeast asian vibes, maybe Dai people have same ancestral roots with SEA people. Even the fried cow skin , in Indonesia, its a famous and loveable snack called rambak, 100% same. Some area like Kudus region in Java even have specialized "rambak" made from water buffalo skin. Also, you can put rambak in gulai/curry (became a dish called krecek) or boil them with clear soup, let them for some time and it will blow your mind because it will have similiar texture and flavour of fish maw (yi phiaw), maybe because of the rich collagenous tissue inside.
I married at Tai Lue Sipsongpanna woman in 1996. Loved your video, thought you nailed it by saying that the food was a mixture of herbaly, peppery/spicy, and sour. My brother-in-law and his wife are really good cooks. Lived in N. Thailand 19 years, in the north so more sour food than sweet trending Bangkok fare.
Good cheap food and reasonable housing prices outside the big cities.. And you can go everywhere by train or planes and even autoonmous taxi in some cities nowadays. Never thought I would say it but it would be hard to move away once you have lived in China.
I saw Xishuangbannan and I thought, well you better get yourself some Pu'er Amy! And so happy you did :) . I am hoping to go visit some day, so many nice Pu'er mountains in Xishuangbannan like Pasha, Yiwu, Jingmai and Bulang.
I had my worst food poison with Dai barbecue when I was a kid about 15 years ago😂 But the restaurant you are visiting seems nice. Hope you enjoy your trip🎉
Bangkok is linguistically and culturally very different from Xishuangbanna. A better comparison would be Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai, Jinghong is even called Chiang Rung in Thai.
Amy, the Dai foods seem similar as Thai foods, even there is a Tae tea (Thai tea) coffee shop. Great video! Always healthy, happy and success! GBU 🙏🏻👍🏻😍
Just found your YT channel. And I am thoroughly impressed with your Chinese and your openness to trying to foods and culture. Keep on truckin'! (or youtubing!)
if you're looking for the nanmi dip/sauce, search for 'nanpie' instead. took a while to figure that one out. also, it's a pretty broad term, it's basically a catch-all for all sauces within the dai flavor profile of sour, sweet, acidic, herbaceous and pungent. if you make something in a mortar and pestle and it ticks those boxes, you can call it nanpie.
Hey Amy, Yunnan also produces coffee beans now! Thanks to the adequate sunshine in that region, the coffee beans have great quality. I highly recommend you to try it!
wow.... the food really like indonesian food, the cow skin you can get it from padangese, the baoshao is like pepes in indonesian, the cake fried sticky rice? we have it as well, we call it rengginang !!!!
Must have missed this episode ! First time hearing about this part of China, and it's Definitaly a 'crossover' cuisine! Heavily influenced by the neigboring countries 😉 Also nice 2 C U eating the whole prawns, i like them best that way too..
Beef skin, interesting. How are those not packaged in potato chip bags and sold in snack aisles? I mean, we already have pork rinds, but not really any other meat alternatives in terms of crispy pantry snacks.
So exciting you be there good view and nice food .I just want tell you if you back Australia you can get the same food in Adelaide .same taste and very yum traditional Yunnan cuisine 😊😊😊😊
I miss when Amy used to due content other than food. Because every time I watch your new videos it's always so late at night here and I just get so hungry!
Looks very different, I wounder how hard or not is the region to get to and where from? Yum Yum and thanks for your unending positive orientation to all things China. Whatever can be done to lessen political tensions should be, because it is the ordinary people who always suffer most.

China is truly amazing. It is both an influencer and the influenced.
This food looks amazingly good.
How interesting…. This is like a mini Thailand in China! The crackling pork, chilli dip in metal pot, sticky rice on banana leaves and night market simply remind me of Chiang Mai
This is a mini Thailand without the sea
“Tai peoples migrated from southwestern China to mainland Southeast Asia from the 11th century.” from wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thailand

The food looks so good 👌 That's one of the many reasons I'm in China ❤️

Who's Brandi?

Right. The South Sea is a part of a China. You are lucky or unlucky we didn't invaded your homeland 500 years ago.
Oh my, China is really a treasure trove for many wonderful food and cultural experiences. The food you had in this video was mind-blowing. Amy, I wish you a pleasant stay and hope for more content from this beautiful region, please...
I met Blondie in XingGuang market of xishuangbanna before CNY. She was looking for video contents there, finally this video comes out. Good job 👍
This video makes me want to visit Xishuangbanna. Thanks Amy for showing us.
Being Australian I'm not surprised you loved the BBQed Prawns ! Xishuangbanna seems like a bustling and interesting place to visit.

@Adora Tsang Yes! The border today is really a western concept. Asians don't draw their borders as precise as the westerners do.
The Dai people in China, are acually Thai, they are related.
@@benwang9401 more closer to Lao ppl and Isaan ppl.
Quite similar culture...

so interesting to count Thai/Lao style cuisine as Chinese food as well..... i'm not sure which other country has such diverse styles of foods

傣族,你可以看成比泰国人还要传统的族群,不管谁早谁晚。傣族保留着,最传统古老的文化,文字,还有一些仪式。
No, they are different, Thai is exclusively Southwestern Tai, while Dai/Tai is the general term.
Dai are basically northern Thai of Thailand, they speak same dialect as northern Thailand.

That’s a big cup of lemon tea! Yum!
Crazy you can go from the northern heavy spiced hearty food all the way down to zesty light thai stuff in one country.
