    I started burning incense last week and my prayer life has become more fruitful. One thing father said about loving someone into exposing themselves, reminded me of Archbishop Fulton Sheen who said sometimes the only way God can get to some hearts is to break them. Not everyone can be loved to exposing their “sap.”

    At the Church of Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, there is a local Palestinian family who attend early every morning to pour myrrh and frankincense oil on the anointing stone where Christ was laid down from the cross for preparation for burial. They also have oil lamps above the stone which drop this oil on the stone. 3x a day they have an incense procession there. The deacons of Armenian, Eastern Orthodox and Coptic process the incense around all the different altars, the aedicule and the anointing stone.

    I am a former protestant who recently started using incense in my prayers. Oh boy! It has improved my prayer life and I feel closer to the most high.

    Incense is derived from the resinous sap of the tree. A 🌲 pine tree which has been struck by lightning will ooze a great deal of pine resin, which can be harvested to make perfume etc.

      Not too many ppl are aware of this. I have collected so much resins from multiple pine trees where I live. The small chips/barks can also be used as they release beautiful scents.

    Padre, I love this meditation! Just to add something… don’t forget that the prophet Hosea was a “dresser of sycamores” -he would “bleed” out the bitterness of the trees so that the sap and fruit would be of the greatest essence and taste. Would that Christ would bleed out the bitterness in our hearts and minds thus transforming and Eucharistifying us into a mirror image of Himself….

    What’s the difference between incense used in Christianity and incense in other religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism? Are those ones demonic?

    It’s interesting to hear him explain “the priest” taking on the wounds of his people. He then gets to Christ. But we Protestants struggle with the Catholic role for a priest. He behaves like an intermediary…why wouldn’t it just be direct between the believer and Christ?

    • @jwilsonhandmadeknives2760
      @jwilsonhandmadeknives2760 Год назад +25

      short answer: the priest is an intercessor, not an intermediary. he touches on it at 1:40. Christ is doing the work, the priest is the conduit.
      long answer: a priest is much more than a pastor. (Apostolic succession). Christ gave the apostles authority to bind and loose and to perform sacraments. Also refer to the temple priests in the OT. Priests are not laity.
