    Nice one thanks Matt! When you said South Devon, I thought maybe you'd been down close to my Manor! 😁😁 Nice video and true what you say about trying to cast near to the moored boats. I was chuckling at your little dog! If you are shore fishing, does she ever grab the fish? A mate on the forums has a Black Dog similar size, and if he catches a dogfish & unhooks it, his dog tries to grab it and run off with it! Only happens with dogfish, and his dog has been known to come running along the beach with dogfish he's stolen from other anglers as well! Stay safe & well! 👍👍

    Got your email today, Matt.
    I have to say you are definitely opening my eyes to targeting sea bass. Up in the NE of Scotland they are not as common but they are here.
    After getting a pair of Polarised sunglasses, based on your recommendations, I was at my usual mark targeting pollock, I swear I seen a relatively large fish swim past the rocks, just under the surface of the water. The sea was relatively flat but the surface of water was broken and it was difficult to make out but I definitely seen it. The first thing I thought was “Bass”. I haven’t caught a bass at this mark but a few pollock and a couple of relatively large mackerel throughout the season.
    I recently got a Patchinko 85 through the door and I have used it once since. I might look at a Zonk and maybe try going down at different tides.
    Will bass feed through the full tide cycle or only at certain times?

    • @SaltwaterAngler
      @SaltwaterAngler  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for signing up for the email list. Looks like your making progress, the biggest issue with Bass fishing in NE Scotland is people dont target them.Will be interested to hear how you get on. Possibly Mullet cruising around ? Regards Bass they will feed at ANY state of the tide depending on conditions and Marks. In time its possible to follow their movements. I like the first turn of the Tide and also an hour before High at my local mark , But each spot is different. Think about what the Tide is doing and how the Bass are taking advantage of it.

    Good stuff mate. You might have had more luck with smaller lures though, I've been fishing a bit further down the estuary (more towards Newton abbot way) and the bass have been really picky on lure size. I usually fish with the 4" or 6" skerries eels, but the bass down there have been far more interested in 2" or 3" grub tails. Im guessing they're feeding on the small fry that are abundant in the water at the moment, so that's what they're locked on to.

    • @SaltwaterAngler
      @SaltwaterAngler  2 года назад

      Yes, you are correct. I was limited to needing something that cast in to that channel today, very often those smaller baitfish matching lures catch.

    I bought a couple of the line through sand eel lures and I have to say I think they have close to no action, just my opinion I wouldn't buy them again, their selling point is that they are a 3d image of a real sand eel but there seems to be no twist to create an action in the water as it's a 3d model of a deal eel. I have a couple of boxes of savage gear gravity stick lures which I think are very good and also bought 10 cheap metals which really have a good action. Thanks for the video, having a brutal time of it on Anglesey, there's not even been any mackerel about for a few weeks.

  • @PoetofHateSpeech
    @PoetofHateSpeech 2 года назад +1

    First time seeing one of your videos. Why do you use single hooks and why can't you use live sand eels?
    I'm in Australia so I find it interesting
    I've sort of turned off using live bait. I talked to a fishermen last big trip I did and he made good a point about that it seems a little inhumane to use living animal for a hobby. If it was to feed my family no issues but just as a hobby.
    Plus I keep many aquariums with large fish and kind of torn about using live bait

    • @SaltwaterAngler
      @SaltwaterAngler  2 года назад +1

      Some good points . Single hooks for ease of unhooking , the alternative are trebbles which as well as causing fish harm can take ages to unhook from you and the fish.
      Ref live bait, it’s an effective method , the counter argument though is that I don’t think of fish as a game where I put them back. Generally I’m fishing to hunt not play. In many ways it’s inhumane to catch a fish on a hook and then let it go. Like it’s some sort of plaything. I battle with these thoughts and don’t claim to know the answer to it all ? Nature is both raw and beautiful isn’t it - thanks for your thought provoking comments- comment of the week winner ! if we had one👍

      @@SaltwaterAngler Thanks mate, yeah I'm really twisted up about it.
      Don't get me wrong, I'm not a "greenie" but I'm lately thinking of the morality of putting a hook through the back of a live fish, and tossing it out while it's not only freaking out from the hook but by predators.
      Especially since I keep many species of fish and new research is proving fish to be much more intelligent than we ever thought.
      Sorry for my rambling, text is hard to get across my thoughts on this 😕🤔

      BASS NURSERY AREAS
      Yes but these apply mostly to boat as far as i understand.
      Theres a wealth of info on the IFCA website here; www.devonandsevernifca.gov.uk/Enforcement-Legislation/Bass-Compliance-Direction
      are set out within the Bass (Specified Areas) (Prohibition of Fishing) (Variation) Order 1999.
      There are restrictions on fishing for bass in different areas at certain times of the year, including a prohibition on the use of Sand Eels (Ammodytidae spp) as bait. The bass nursery area legislation is relevant to commercial and recreational fishers.
      Key Information:
      Be aware of the dates when the bass nursery areas are active
      When active, you must not target bass if fishing from a vessel
      When active and when using a vessel, you must not use sand eel as bait regardless of species targeted
      River Exe: Fishing for bass, or fishing for any species of sea fish using Sand Eels (Ammodytidae spp) as bait, by any fishing boat within any part of the River Exe Bass Nursery Area is prohibited between 30th April and 1st November.
      River Teign: Fishing for bass, or fishing for any species of sea fish using Sand Eels (Ammodytidae spp) as bait, by any fishing boat within any part of the River Teign Bass Nursery area is prohibited between 30th April and 1st November.
      In addition theres local council bylaws on muscle collection as well as those Oyster. I have some of that if you send me an email at matt@saltwaterangler.uk i can send you it through

  • @malcolmwebb8605
    @malcolmwebb8605 2 года назад +2

    Hi Matt the Teign estuary is a designated bass nursery and any fish under 42 cm must be returned , it takes between 5 to 7 years for a fish to reach this size and are unlikely to be found in the area you are fishing and should not be encouraged in the interest of conservation of the species.

    Great watch , but telling people to cast lures at Hull off boat is not right ! Kids who watch this might decide to cast 5/ 6 oz weights at boats as you said that's where the bass are ! Being very honest If I caught a lure fisherman using a dexter wedge at the Hull of my boat !!! There would be a problem !
    Would you pay for it if you put a lure through a window? Or you put a lure through the canvas protecting the back off the boat ! What would you do?

    • @SaltwaterAngler
      @SaltwaterAngler  2 года назад

      I did have to look this one up and I called the local IFCA. There’s a number of no take zones and maps for this area, also the local council have some more gathering restrictions it really is a minefield. I remember decades ago lots of anglers dropping live sandeel off the bridge as the only way of fishing. I appreciate your frustrations though Daniel , let us know how you get on hopefully with some better bass !
