I didn't know what the hell was going on right after Bill Skasgard got his head bashed in and they transitioned to Justin Longs character. I thought for sure Georgina Campbell's character was done for. Richard Brake is always creepy as hell.
My favorite moment is when AJ measured the dimensions of the creepy basement. It keeps going and gets more and more ridiculous, but you just keep laughing.
Just watched. Its so good and full of surprises. When she went into the basement with Sarsgard... you're like Noooo... and then she goes back in for Long. WTF. This movie is full of twisty surprises. There's something to be said about a really good director who can make just scenes with 1-2 actors dynamite. I cant wait to see what's next from cregger. Throw all the monies at him for more horror movies. Him and Ti West.
The short answer to the water tower question is propulsion. Someone jumping with speed in a direction will move faster than someone falling at a resting pace due to greater kinetic energy. Plus, the mother had already shown she was strong enough to leap out of the pit carrying Justin Long with no effort. I don't doubt she'd be able to get a move on saving Tess pretty quick. Is the overall distance from A to B a touch-bit sketchy? Maybe. But the logic is sound enough if you think about it.
No. No the logic and physics do not work out. neither does some girl pulling people's arms off, or ripping heads in half with bare hands. This movie is cartoon level goofy.
He said that the lady wasn’t even the worst thing in there. I was hoping that meant crazier monsters, but then I assumed he meant Frank. Either way, the movie was awesome.
@@ekuhn44 would of been cool if there were different monsters with different quirks and they had this scene where they’re having this gross insane orgy. Well, that’s my definition of malignant crazy.
I just saw "Barbarian" today, a great early fall release. I thought it was funny Justin Long lost his eyes again in a horror movie like in "Jeepers Creepers"
This premiered today on HBO Max. Had no idea what I was going to see, but in that first scene I thought it was called Barbarian b/c it was sort of like an anagram for a haunted Airbnb or something 😂.
Christy drinking from a big container returns! This movie was so fun. And I expected NOTHING going in. And I'm about to do 4 different Airbnbs in Italy. GREAT!
One thing I realized after my second viewing about the character of Tess is that at the beginning when she’s talking with Keith, she mentions how in relationships, she always ends up going back to situations she knows she shouldn’t. And that plays into her thinking throughout the film. She doesn’t make dumb decisions because she’s dumb. It’s just part of her character and nature to go back into situations that she feels can be salvageable (going back to the basement to save the men who are trapped there is like going back into a relationship because she feels she can help him change.) Then in the end, as the mother is trying to get her back to the house, Tess says “I can’t go back”, which rounds out her character development; it’s her realizing she can no longer be going back to situations that are not for her and breaking that pattern.
I really enjoyed the convo at the start with tess and Bill's character about how a guy would approach the situation compared to a woman. I mean you can ask why she would agree to stay there at all with a stranger but she takes some precautions. She also understands how to placate the 'mom' in a way that Justin just isn't willing to, like you said. Tess gets to one room and then gets the hell out of there the first time around, Justin goes down there and brings a measuring tape. 🤦♀️
I read an interview with the writer/director and he said that the title means nothing, that he just saved the text file as a random word--Barbarian. and it just stuck. but I also think maybe that is a case of the director making a story out of nothing. It seems like a pretty obvious title.
I read that the street that the house is in is called Barbary (I've only seen it once and didn't pay attention so I can't vouch)? Hence the people who live there are Barbarians.
Watched last night since now on HBOMAX. So glad I was able to avoid everything and go in cold. The comparison to Malignant is appropriate in that if you just go with it, it's a blast. Horrific but also contains two of the funniest movie moments of the year - when he is measuring the rooms and the song at the end.
***SPOILER**** I think the title of the film has to do with the way The Mother speaks: “Ba Ba Ba Ba …” From Wikipedia: “The Greeks used the term barbarian for all non-Greek-speaking peoples, including the Egyptians, Persians, Medes and Phoenicians, emphasizing their otherness. According to Greek writers, this was because the language they spoke sounded to Greeks like gibberish represented by the sounds "bar..bar..;" the alleged root of the word βάρβαρος, which is an echomimetic or onomatopoeic word.”
Well the ending of Barbarian is a let down but its really effectively done though. The suspense and tension is just so elevated in the movie. Something happens every minute. I have rarely seen such an unpredictable movie as you too mention in your review. You know what is happening but you never know what's going to happen next. And the scares are so well placed. And the acting and production values are great. I just wished it had a one final twist at the end. Something that stays with us. Its kind of cliched ending. My rating is 7.
I honestly thought this movie was terrible. Decent acting. Good half hour set-up (thrwoing you off with the Skarsgard casting). But then it all starts to fall apart, for me. Why would anyone accept staying in this neighborhood for an Airbnb? Not realistic, AT ALL. The company(ies) double-booking seemed nutty. Why is the basement door msterially closing/locking behind people? Supernatural? I don't think so. Who doesn't scope out the entire house they are staying in before realizing that something CRAZY is happening in the basement?? WHO KEEPS GOING DOWN INTO THE BASEMENT LIKE THAT OVER & OVER AGAIN? Runnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn and don't look back. Why are there no missing persons investigations going on for the missing rentees? I also find it hard to believe that the police would be THAT dismissive of someone in need. How did that 1980s dude create this never-ending cavernous tunnel far below the Earth? What was the point of the video camera set-up/bucket in that initial room when the main action by "Mother" happens way down below the Earth? As mentioned in this spoiler review, how did "Mother" beat Tess to the ground after that fall? Again, superhuman strength/power/skills by "Mother" do not match-up with the based-in-reality plot at hand. I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty of other things at the moment. Just so DUMB. As I said earlier, I was aboard for the first half hour. But then it started to bug me and, with each stupid thing/decision occurring, it only magnified my increasing, precipitous dislike of the film.
I feel like if you can suspend your disbelief enough that incest/inbreeding results in super strength, you can totally buy that the mother is able to launch herself down to save her baby. This is definitely an elevated reality we're operating in! ;D Was the homeless man's death possibly a nod to Deep Blue Sea? Someone dying spectacularly from behind in the middle of a monologue? lol
I find it funny that a lot of people are saying to go see this movie without knowing anything. That's my first rule of moviegoing. I think most movies are best experienced knowing little to nothing about it.
Yes but it's so hard to avoid trailers or reactions of any kind between the 25-minute pre-show at the big chains, social media, etc. So that's why Barbarian was such a wonderful surprise!
@@BreakfastAllDay that's why I stay in the hallway until the trailers stop and walk in during the Regal promos start 🤪. I respect your opinions, but I thought this one was a mess. I liked act 1 and Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgard were good, but everything else was just all over the place. None of the other characters felt remotely real. I mean I get that cops suck, but just driving away from someone reporting a crime? Also, NO ONE would have done half the things Campbell's character did. I hate it when writers have to resort to making characters make unrealistic choices just so the movie can continue...
I loved Barbarian. It was so fun and creepy and unpredictable. My only complaint was the ending because it just kept going. Literally there was like 3 different endings. Also how did the fall from the water tower not kill both of them? Like if the fall didn’t kill that woman then why would a bullet do it idk lol. Overall I still loved it 9/10

I have mixed feelings about this one. I like it but then again I don't. I liked the acting, the visuals, the suspense, unique story line I even liked Long's douche-bag character HOWEVER, what really ticked me off was HOW and from WERE dose this... "Big, Long Ass, Tities Ma'am" gets her strength from ! Being inbred doesn't give you super human powers . I mean she got hit by a car, she's not injured, still alive. She fell from a building, again didn't seemed injured. She rips off a man's arm, sticks her thumbs in his eye sockets (doable I agree) and splits his head in half with her bare hands. Really 🤨. Besides this, I personally would have liked to see some of the VHS footage. I think this movie was suspenseful.🍒
I kind of agree, but also...it's a horror movie. supernatural shit comes with the territory. As a real world explanation, no I don't think inbreeding causes super strength and agility. in a horror movie, as long as the the rest of the film is great, I could care less. and this is a great one.
@@killbot_factory I have no problem with super natural horror, in fact I enjoy it. My point is, the super natural aspect dosen't fit in with this movie because everthing else in the movie, as awful as it may be, IS possible in real life. So when they add this (and only this) supernatural strength of a human being with out any explanation it distract me from the true horror in its entirety.
@@LulyTubee I had this same discussion with a friend of mine, and I was on your side of the argument, because you're right -- it's totally out of place, when everything else is so grounded in reality.
