@Cynical Frenchface definitely not, there are others who were wrong as you were when it came out, but it’s now rightfully cemented as a modern horror classic.
@Cynical Frenchface aside from the technical aspect(which was objectively Well done) what makes a good horror movie is pretty subjective. I love the time piece and the whole concept of recreating a puritan fable but I can see why a lot of people wouldnt really care much for it
@Cynical Frenchface the script is one of the best parts tho, its meant to be disjointed, its meant to be like a scare story puritan moms would tell their kids to make them behave, sort of like a dark fairy tale. And thats also the whole point of thomasin, as a puritan girl she doesnt have agency. She was about to get sold ib exchange for some cows lol. The action in The Nice Guys was good! Well shot, well edited and with excellent sound. A movie doesn't need exploding city blocks and complex choreography to be exciting. All it needs, as you said, are characters that we care about and a sense of actual danger, which The Nice Guys had.
As soon as Mike said it, I thought, "That's going to happen." Animal Farm as a funny Pixar cartoon where Communism works perfectly? It'll gross $1B in China alone.

WreckItRalph I've been lead to both good and terrible from him. With arthouse you get either something interesting, or absolute pretentiousness. It's a 50/50 sometimes I get something good like the VVitch, others I get trash like Neon Demon
The Greasy Strangler sounds similar to a short story my friend wrote for English class back in 1994 called "the Naked Midget". I believe the main character was a little person and a detective who, when trying to solve a crime, would get naked and grease himself up. I don't remember all the details, but it was pretty damn funny
Same for me, I was excited for that movie since I saw the trailer and usually when I wait that long for a movie I'm disappointed, but with this one it BLEW me away. Solid movie.
I never got a chance to see it when it came out- it's the first time in a while that the trailer for a comedy actually made me laugh out loud. Now that the hack frauds have praised it, I'll definitely be getting it as a Christmas present for myself since I don't have anybody in my life who loves me enough to buy me things.
Tyler Bioshock R I'm a huge Kubrick fan, but the Shining is actually one of my least favorite films of his. The cinematography and musical score are great, but the performances of Jack Nicholson (more goofy than scary) and Shelly Duvall (whiny and annoying) really bring it down for me.
I can't believe I didn't remember this at first, but Mike and Jay's idea about it being funny to watch people trying to kill themselves is the subject of a great episode of Satoshi Kon's Paranoia Agent, wherein a group of people form a suicide pact but just can't seem to find a way to act on it. It's a funny, dark, and heartwarming episode that you can pick out of the show without needing much context if you don't want to watch the previous episodes. See it!

I believe the humour used in The Lobster is called absurdist. A completely out there idea treated with complete seriousness. I wasn't a big fan, but I get why people would like it.

Ah yes, Zootopia, the family friendly talking animal film about... [Spoilers] Politicians inciting a race war by injecting minorities with crystal meth.
shotglassanhero I mean if you call the resolution to the overall mystery persistent throughout the film 25%, sure. Though, I'm not complaining, I love that fucking movie. If I didn't I wouldn't have marked spoilers because I wouldn't have cared.
HobblyBoy I found it interesting that [spoilers] the sheep was the villain. Is Disney actually delivering a nuanced racism metaphor that shows it runs both ways? An animated kids movie that indicts folk like BLM?
Mad props Jay for 'The VVitch' & 'The Neon Demon' love. Especially the mention of the score, seriously was the best score of the year. That and Mica Levi's 'Jackie', which was another fantastic score.
I'm glad that Mike made that point about the animators in Sausage Party. Those fucking animators are so much more skilled and talented than Seth Rogan. It takes years and years of study and practice to be good enough to even intern for a feature animation production and it's still a small fraction of the wages that Seth Rogan gets paid.

But the real answer is they just don't like them.
Thank you for the laughter, Mr. Reubens.
Another way to make 1bil is to make a superhero movie with talking animals in it...
Guardians Vol 2.
Howard the duck 2?
VVVV guardians of the galaxy ftw
I would watch that
VVVV Actually that would be 2bil.
So, all you need is;
A comic book movie, about a mermaid with an animal companion.
Give aquaman a pet dolphin and we've got the movie of the century!
Kinda odd that the premise of Pee Wee's Big Holiday is that he doesn't like going anywhere or trying anything new or ever leaving his town when the characters' first movie famously involved a cross country trip
Ah yes, Zootopia, the family friendly talking animal film about...
[Spoilers]
Politicians inciting a race war by injecting minorities with crystal meth.
That's like 25% of the film.
shotglassanhero I mean if you call the resolution to the overall mystery persistent throughout the film 25%, sure. Though, I'm not complaining, I love that fucking movie. If I didn't I wouldn't have marked spoilers because I wouldn't have cared.
Yeah, did they review that one this year?
As far as I can recall the only animated film they've reviewed on their channel is The Christmas Tree. And that's well... yeah...
HobblyBoy I found it interesting that
[spoilers]
the sheep was the villain. Is Disney actually delivering a nuanced racism metaphor that shows it runs both ways? An animated kids movie that indicts folk like BLM?
Mike hates seth rogen! My life is complete!
I think my favorite HitB episodes are these catch-up style reviews.
@@bumfricker2487 I clapped! I recognized him and I Clapped!
HITB is only for those south of the wall friend.
The Witch is also my favourite movie of 2016! What a beautifully made film- I love the soundtrack and all of the various levels of storytelling.

For Jay to say that the Witch is “doing something completely fucking vile” shows you how terrifying the movie was.
Lol why does Jay likes movies about witches so much?
scockery * vvitch
Thanks to this video I found The Greasy Strangler and I loved it
Damn jay your hair and beard game is on point! on point dude! keep it up as i know im not the only one who appreciates it. And mike... you look nice.
Mad props Jay for 'The VVitch' & 'The Neon Demon' love. Especially the mention of the score, seriously was the best score of the year. That and Mica Levi's 'Jackie', which was another fantastic score.
Swiss Army Man and Greasy Strangler! Best year for movies.
@10:19 can we just all appreciate for a moment how Jay described that the only things that make him laugh are things that remind him of Mike
Jay's hair & beard game is on point, how does he do it lads?
Just shared your video on Facebook, one of the few reliable movie review channels.
That Max Landis dig at the end cracked me up, was not expecting that LOL
