    Some of the most fun I've had in a movie this year. It's always so obvious when a movie is made with real and true passion and this is no exception. I've seen it 4 times just cause I loved taking new people to go see it and so I could kind of relive it fresh with them every time. Just a blast start to finish.

    I was really surprised by Barbarian too. I was expecting a dumb stop motion crawling monster that never seems to catch up to characters, but it was great. Didn’t take itself too seriously either. Loved the tape measure scenes with Justin’s character

    I had really been hoping you would review this movie. I saw it opening week after I noticed it was getting some buzz. It’s rare a movie provides something unexpected, and this film kept me off balanced from the beginning to the ending with the perfect closing track. Possibly my favorite use of scene transitions of any film I can remember, and the scene with Justin Long in the basement might be the hardest I’ve ever laughed in a horror film. This film is a rare gem that doesn’t come around often.

    Reminded me of the original "When a Stranger Calls" where the first act could be viewed on its own as a great 30ish minutes of tension build up, and then the second and third act kind of becomes a different movie but is still very solid.

    Ok this is wild, youtube plucked this channel I've never seen before out of the aether to tell me about a horror movie I've never heard of before that was written, directed and starring one of my favorite comedians. It has probably been a decade since I watched any WKUK ot cause I've had all of them served from my plex server for years and I've watched wrecked and guys with kids on other platforms, nor do I typically watch movie reviews because I go in blind, but I scrolled over the video and saw the auto captions mention Zach Cregger and had to see what was up. STG the algorithm is powered by black magic.

    I thought the first half was so strong, it was almost going for the classic status in my mind, but it started missing the beat in the end, like most horrorfilms tend to do. It also reminded me of the french film Martyrs, wich is a true horror classic in my book that cuts a lot deeper than the surface levelled shocks this movie provides... still a very competent thriller that will be loved for many reasons but its no Martyrs

Think we're on pretty much the same page where I feel it didn't quite mine all the interesting thematic material that it could have from the plot/characters, but as a viewing experience it was a blast and it is up there with Top Gun: Maverick as far as the most fun I've had in the theater this year.

    What was the story behind the electronic tooth brush kept on the charger on the bathroom floor…they focused on it for a couple of times. Was it something related to The Mother who brushes her teeth at night or did it have a secret microphone or camera so that Mother can know whats goin on above?

    Excellent review. I loved the film but I'm quite torn about the third act. On the one hand, I like that it took such a wild left turn with its truly bizarre monster. On the other, the first two acts were so masterfully tense and clever, it was a little deflating to see the third act become this almost Troma-esque black comedy. Especially after introducing the terrifying "Dad" character in that astonishing and deeply unsettling 80s flashback.
    A "Pearl" style prequel about the two killers in this movie could be fascinating.

    I was pretty into this movie during the first half/two thirds. However, by the time you get to the final character being involved the whole thing becomes so disappointing and predictable. It's great at building tension and keeping you sort of off balance at the beginning, but ultimately the way it all ties itself together is cliche and it really let me down. It went from being off-kilter and unusual to feeling like something I saw 15-20 years ago. This was probably a 6/10 for me.

    Remember in old school horror when we were meant to relate to the victims and root against the killers? Modern horror tends to feel more like the brutal revenge fantasies of the judgey people who made them.

    The only thing I don't like about Barbarian is the character design. It's basically la niña Medeiros from REC. A design that's been done a few times already. They missed the chance to innovate there.

  • @KungFuIsland
    @KungFuIsland 2 года назад

    I generally enjoyed the movie, but I really feel like they got a bit lazy with Justin Long's character (which was basically just his character in Tusk (swap podcaster with producer). They did a good job setting him up as complicated character but then just erased all of that character development at the water tower. At that point they might as well have just brought him in for the last 15 minutes without all of the earlier character building. Also, maybe it's just me but the interior of the house felt way too large vs the exterior. That said, the cast and atmosphere was great.

    The first act was great. Unfortunately the (possible) reveals I concocted in my head were far more terrifying than what was revealed to us. I found the main “villain” quite comical, silly and gross - and that really took me out of it. Also found a lot of it predictable in the final act. It was clear who would win vs lose. Regardless, it was entertaining so I give it a 3/5.

  • @superquokka
    @superquokka 2 года назад +1

    Maybe this movie was just overhyped for me, due to all the people saying "make sure you don't know anything going in." The first act was so good, but it went quickly downhill for me after that. I normally don't have an issue with suspension of disbelief, but by the end of the film, I couldn't get myself out of the mindset of thinking over all the things that didn't make sense (even within the logic of the movie). The biggest problem being that two people have been missing for weeks, and no one checks their last known whereabouts... Perhaps the film was trying to say something about neglected neighborhoods, the failures of policing or even male toxicity. In the end, I enjoyed the experience, but for me it will be an excellent premise that meanders to a fairly standard and forgettable conclusion.

    While it was very well made, the story wanders and there's even an abrupt scene for a while of a completely different character that seems irrelevant to the rest of the movie. The character is some repairman driving around and visiting neighbors. I don't know what he had anything to do with the rest of the movie. The Barbarian itself is not entirely explained either, but looks cool. The story needs a rewrite and there's no way of understanding how the inside of the house is impossible to include the dungeons and dark hallways and gates which was way too over the top underneath the basement for such small space before entering downstairs.

      The fake repairman was the father of the woman that was kept in the dungeon. It was explaining the past giving us some exposition on how this woman came to be where she was and the cycle of events from past to present. The title Barbarian could refer to at least three characters in the movie and lets you decide for yourself who that is. Personally i saw AJ who ends up betraying and abandoning Tess as the true "barbarian" of the story.

    • @stevebob240
      @stevebob240 2 года назад +2

      @@slave_to_cinema Well said, yes. The title is vague, I was just saying one possible interpretation. I want to add that it also shows how he was able to get into different people's houses in the neighborhood in order to dig out that underground tunnel system.

    I thought Barbarian was a disjointed mess; It had decent elements, but couldn't make up its mind, if was a brooding psychological thriller, or a snarky satire of Hollywood vanity, or a grungy torture-pcrn/horror, or an Evil Dead-style horror/comedy.
    It tried to be ALL those things, for 20 minutes at a time... But would have been better off, to just pick one option (or maybe 2 at most, for a "cross over" vibe), and consistently see it through.
    I actually checked whether they switched directors mid-shoot or something.

    For me, this wasn’t a great movie, but it was definitely fun!!
    1) 100% agree with you in that I wish they had written Justin Long’s character to be more endearing and sweet, not so asshole-ish. And I wish his assault of his coworker would have been more unclear than a fact. Because at that point, it’s very hard for the audience to sympathize with his character.
    …In fact, I kinda wish the 2 lead male characters had switched! Skarsguard’s character was much more likable than Long’s.
    2) There’s a weird sliver in my film critic’s soul that thinks it would have been an interesting twist ending if the lead character had not pulled the trigger and decided instead to stay in the house with the Barbarian. Lol

    I hated this film. So many scenes where the movie disobeys logic, physics, common sense & continuity.
    Barbarian gramma is crushed between a house & a large SUV. Does she break bones? No. Break a pelvis? No. Crush her internal organs? No. This movie is full of ridiculous Wiley Coyote cartoon logic. Well shot. Sharp editing, but terrible story & execution. Don't believe the hype. (And I'm a super fan of horror. Too bad I spent more time rolling my eyes & laughing instead of sitting on the edge of my seat)

      Totally agree went into this because of all the hype just to find out that these critics are seem to be overhyping this yes it is a well-made movie and yes there is some symbolism the problem I had with the film is that it relies on characters doing stupid things to further the plot. There’s no one to root for in this movie for me woman was too stupid and in the second half the male character was an asshole I couldn’t wait for both in the die . And that ruined the suspense of the movie for me.
