3:56 To clarify the Ragtime Rampage level, the portion of the song plays twice, not two paths: the first time you are just running and can hear the whole piece, the second time you have to survive the platforming. I wanted peeps to still be able to hear the song if they couldn’t do the platforming. (Which I did do to upload)
This was the first level I ever created. I’m ambitious. I didn’t know about cheese at the time. I discovered you can kick spinys on conveyor belts just by running into them. This was fun. Thanks for showing my level.

There's a lot of intricate New Super Mario Bros speedruns like that, but that's one of the craziest and coolest I've seen. No way I could dream of beating that in a million years lol.

I love how Ryus videos are not effect-overloaded when it comes to editing. But when it hits, then it hits real good and i have a good laugh.
When the description says that you shouldn't twirl to grab the acorn and he keeps twirling every time.
Classic case of a youtuber-blindness.
He had to twirl to get the fireball on the bridge (there are even indicators for it), so I am assuming the description disclaimer meant for the part after that where he actually gets the acorn suit... but I don't see why it matters if he twirls or not there because it seems to work either way... 🤷
at the point he got to the acorn he probably already put in some time in this level so he forgot about the description
@@David-kc2sj Nope, he didn't forget. He explicitly called out the "no twirls", and then just did it anyways. I guess either assuming it was a suggestion as in, "no twirls needed", or just said "sod it" to the challenge of not twirling.
It was amazing to see your skills on that one last level, even without having played it before you were able to know what to do in most of the parts. Ryu goat ❤️

I think the idea is that the level is sinking into the lava rather the lava rising.

Was really disappointed and it kinda felt like he didn't even try... more like he just wants to tick off a checkbox and didn't care about the level. I mean the music was phenomenal. He didn't even see what the "actual" path looks like.

Yes, Ryu cheeses where possible but that was always only in hot garbage levels so he won't have to put up with their waste of time. Have you ever seen him try to break and cheese and "desecrate" any good platforming levels? Yeah that's what I thought.

There's this RUclips channel called Keeper1st. That guy, Tom Brier, sight-reads a lot of Mario music in ragtime style. Actually, you'll find that most of the Mario music is in fact ragtime!
I highly recommend everyone to go watch some of his videos. I think Athlete's Rag, Yoshi's Island Athletic Theme and Super Mario World Ending are some of my favorites.
On a sad note, he's been in an accident a while ago which left him with severe health conditions, unable to play music right now. But if nothing else, the videos are a testament to the man's skill.

The post is called "Jolly fellow who speedreads Mario music". I hope Tom and his family are doing relatively okay. Life has been unfair.

The ways some of these Rube Goldberg machines, masquerading as levels, need to line up sometimes is really insane, but watching one just cruise through, with the reaction times, and responsive controls necessary is a lot of fun!

That last level.......the creator should have named it Ascending Donjon. The player is making their way up with the lava rising. Not going downward through the level. Just a minor nitpick. Great video as always Ryu.

As a hobbyist game designer, I can tell you that smaller hitboxes on enemies/hazards, but bigger hitboxes on collectibles are a must, somehow, if the hitboxes are accurate to the shape of the object, the gameplay feels off (that's one reason why a lot of small indie platformers feel "unfair"), Mario can stand on the very edge of a pit without falling or pick up a red coin without touching it, adds to the feel, not to the realism. Makers notice this and instead of using it as a design tool, they use it as a main feature, breaking the illusion...
Spike/muncher hitboxes in this game are actually messed up and bad designed, no excuse for that.
The problem with hitboxes in Mario maker, isn't so much what Ryu showed in this video. But rather that some hitboxes are super unfair, like spikes in this game. If you touch a pixel, they will just instantly murder you.

It was kind of a bad move to skip over the music level bit. I'm sure the creator put a lot of work into it. The solution wasn't that hard to figure out, a lot of commenters caught it as well. Maybe try more than once to figure out a spot you can't see the first time around.

That last level was absolutely marvelous. What a ride.
Compared to the North American SMB2 the Japanese one is mediocre at best. I think the real reason they changed wasn’t because it was too hard but because people would have called them out for releasing a virtually identical game as a sequel. It isn’t even that hard. They released way harder games than that one in North America.
Still Super Mario Bros 2 was suppose to be a Mario game but Nintendo got the license to Doki Doki Panic from Fuji TV and reskinned Mario to be Doki Doki Panic. They later reskinned the Doki Doki Panic to be Mario 2.

Sorry about your endless run. I watched the whole thing live and it really sucks to get an almost impossible trick level when you were so close to the end. The funniest part is that a lot of chat grabbed the level code and started spamming the level with comments so next time the level creator logs on he's going to get a shitload of notifications and wondering what the hell happened.
