New Sup shell jumps definitely feel harder. I don't know if it's just my imagination or not.
I've started playing this game while watching your videos where I skip forward five seconds every time you pause the game. It's a lot of fun.
I've seen that grabbing the flagpole and still dying thing happen to Grand Poo Bear before so it not an isolated incident. You probably grabbed the pole on the same frame you ran out of time and in this unfortunate case tie goes to the game and not the player.

The goaltape is not that complicated. It takes up 3 columns of tiles, the middle one is an always active pass; it is not possible to get a one-up in the central column, only if it is, it is immensely precise. The 2 outer columns have no condition granted on their own, but do have the tape moving up and down. Touching the tape will end the level and provide a bonus, with a one-up at the top. If you want a one-up, avoid the centre.
Ryu seems a little pissed off in this one😂

I'm not sure about this, but something tells me that holding right after getting the propeller mushroom and hence bumping into the wall was the reason you couldn't finish that level.

I had the same thing happen to me on a super hard 70 second SMB1 speedrun level. Took me another 40 minutes after that to actually clear it.
I do that in multiplayer by hitting start over the moment I touch the goal. I still win but no one else can reach the flag :)

I bought "New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe" on switch for a tame challenge thanks to the enjoyment i get out of watching ryu, panga, and lil kirbs...
and DAMN did it increase my appreciation for what these guys do
their precision and consistency hides how absolutely monstrous some of these jumps are.
sometimes you'll see one of them donk a jump and they'll say "we'll just pretend that didn't happen, i'm cutting it form the video" as if it's a think of great shame but when you actually play, you discover how easy it is to make pitiful jumps by not putting in exactly the right inputs.
if you've already got a switch definitely pick one fo the main line games up. it's still fun and satisfying, and will add to your enjoyment of these videos.

There was one level Ryu played that made it clear that you can time out during quite of the few frames of the "win" animations. The 1 up would show from top of the pole and the clock still killed him. I don't know why Nintendo would design the clock and win condition this shitty/stupid but that other level had time outs that were easily 2 frames past this one.

You recently had that same thing happen in a level but didn't comment on it which had me confused.
You got the pole and got 4000 points for grabbing it, that's what had me baffled. It showed the points for grabbing the pole, but you still died to the timer.
Having this happen 2 times in like 1 week now, crazy.
Surprisingly the first level helped me tremendously, it took a shit ton of tries but I had never landed one of those backward shell jumps. People make it look way to easy lmao

For the propeller level you definitely have to hit a spin jump as soon as the level starts. I think it buys you an extra frame or two

if you get a checkpoint, total time in the level since the beginning of the level, unless you start over, counts for world record, that's why it was originally a 12 minute record

Agree about NSMBU shell jumps feeling harder; the ones in SMW seem much easier. I wonder if it has anything to do with Mario throwing the shell versus kicking it.

In actual SMW you don't get 1-ups from breaking the tape. Usually you get them from stuff being brought through the goal or stuff getting poofed for enough points when you clear the goal.
Does anyone know if Ryu's epic run last week broke the no skip WR? I though Aura had it before at like 30 something...
Sometimes I don't think level creators mean to be sneaky by adding dev exits. I've not used them but sometimes when uploading hard levels I already cleared once when just building and testing it I kinda wish I had a dev exit so I could upload the course easier.

The 1:58 level plays like an old school rpg, like NES old school - go to every place, click every tile and talk to every NPC before proceeding; failure to do so will either block you off or kill you. 😂
