i think your initial suspicions were correct. something about when/how that shell spawns in got changed and now it's lower than it should be, making the level unclearable
So, my husband and I have a theory on the thwomp level. We seem to recall them changing what was globally loaded. If the level was created and the shells on tracks were globally loaded, then the shell would be in a different position than if they changed shells on tracks to be locally loaded.
You’re totally right. It’s probably the 2.0 update that changed how the shells loaded. You can see them all start at the same point even when it looks totally illogical to do that.

The regular levels aren't challenging at all but the Expert and Super Expert learning curve is far beyond me and my working for living life style haha. That could stop the momentum needed to get by the rest of the Thwamps. It''s a crazy hot garbage level like the water level. If you get it right the Thwamptastic Blast level looks like fun.

At 8:52 instead of turn around and move back, maybe it is possible when taking damage at the piranha plant, and jump into the 2 og them, then could take the shell on the head, keep moving when mario is immortal for a while after taking damage again, so he drop the shell from the head, until a next shell to take on the head and keep moving same way again. If its possible to get the shells on the head the moment the shells are moved up. Strange kind of solution, abd i dont know it works. I self play a lots of other games i try to figure out to beat on a difficult way. But i havent played so much Mario.
After spending way too long looking at the clear video that was linked by a couple previous commenters, it seems like Ryu needs to do something differently at the beginning. In the clear video, they bounce off the first Goomba further to the right than Ryu, which then lets them bounce off of that one shell a little bit higher up and just barely avoid taking damage. So Ryu needs to somehow get a bit more distance on the first jump and it should set him up to make the rest of the jumps. No idea how to do that though

Yes it could have, and he didn't check it in the editor. It was loaded with something instead of Bullet Bills so who knows? But getting past all the piranha flowers at the end would be near impossible to pull off. I think Ryu could have done it, but the cannon was probably loaded with coins.
That Thwomptastic level seems like controlled jumps which is bogus because the maker had to know the pattern of when letting go of jump would line the shells up. The typical oversight of how fair is this level to a player who has to first try it?
@ryukahr would love a revisit to this level, and agree with this poster! Why would that down arrow be on the left at the beginning of not for a reason? I believe you need to start the run hitting the first shell when it's on its way down, in the position where the arrow on the left is, about 2/3rds of the way down?
Yeah, he made it over the thwomp but the turn back made him not have enough momentum to clear the first muncher. If you put it on .25x it's very clear he killed the piranha plant with a fireball and the hit was from not clearing the muncher below it.
That unsolvable muncher bouncing level definitely seems like "it broke" somewhere in the MM timeline. Super odd, though; doesn't seem like you could say "Oh, yeah... it's definitely a mid-air, P-switch jump tech that got patched out". There's like ZERO nanz! Huh. 🤔
The only reason that may not be a failed run is because the Thwomptastic level may actually be impossible (some patch may be to blame), and skipping impossible levels is fine. But, if it isn’t impossible, then this run is a complete and total failure.
Not sure why no one tried just searching the level on youtube but there is a video from 6 years ago of someone beating it. Looks like yhe shells are im the same place he just males it, cant tell if he's doing anything or it just for some reason works but he definitely just jumped and fireballed everything like it would seem you are suppose to.
