- If your computer has more than one physical hard disk you could find the essential boot files (on the System Reserved partition) on a different physical hard disk to Windows. In this tutorial, Mike Halsey, author of "Troubleshooting Windows 7 Inside Out" and "Troubleshoot and Optimize Windows 8 Inside Out" shows you how best to install Windows 7 and Windows 8, and how to move the System Reserved partition if it's on the wrong drive.
Dear Mike, the beginning is a little bit scary, but the happy end makes me so satisfied. Thank you so much !
thanks, very useful..
you can type also in diskpart > select volume G > active > remove letter.
can I do this on windows 10, because I have a problem with my PC, when I installed windows 10, I deleted system reserved, now it can only boot when I insert a usb drive, it can't boot without it , it will only say "All boot options are tried, press f4 to recover with factory image" but I think is because of system reserved with is no more there
Holy shit this saved me so dam much money dude.
I don't really get it... After I've restarted the PC the partition on my data disk is still called "system reserved" and the partition on the system disk is still called "new volume". Furthermore, I still can't delete the "system reserved" partition, which I intended to do from the very beginning. What should I do now? I'm quite frustrated.
This worked for me on windows 10 but I still require both drives. Why is this?
Oh god...
Thank you man
from all the article and videos I saw, yours were the only one that worked without the need of a paid program
Worked for my "we couldn't update the system reserved partition" error when trying to install Windows 10. Cheers! :)
Still works for windows 10. TYVM.
You should end up with a small partition of about 300 to 500MB which is your new system reserved drive. The old one will be just 100MB (so tiny in other words) and it will be safe to delete this old partition once everything's moved to the newly created system reserved partition
Thank God this has been annoying me for like 2 weeks saved me a fresh reinstall thanks alot dude
i did this and now when i booted it says BOOTMGR is missing press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
Try my "Troubleshooting Windows 7 Inside Out - Repairing Corrupt Boot Files" video. It's the same procedure for Win 7 and Win 8. RUclips won't let me insert a link to it here
How do you do this in windows 10?
Ok, I followed these instructions, but now how do I delete the existing System Reserved Partition? I have two hard disks, one with the System Reserved on it and the other has my Windows installation.
If you have no drive letter on your system reserved partition, should you just assign one so that it can be edited with the bcdboot command? My partition that says "system" is currently named "Data."
Thanks for this video, very useful.
I have indeed now got the system reserved partition on the correct drive so am I OK to delete the old partition that was wrong the wrong drive?
first time i encounter the you can't install because reserved Partition never had this before and done least 4-5 formats without using a format disk and encounter this problem on a brothers pc, but from this video i can successful format the pc Cheers bud
didnt work for me
how You have created two disks?
Thanks Mike, that allowed me to install Win10 over Win7 on 7-29-15, but now, I have a 100MB volume called D: besides the hidden, active volume and the C: drive and I can't shrink it and I don't know how to delete or remove it (the D: volume). When the window popped up to shrink it, it said to use defrag (I have an SSD). BTW, I'm so sick of Win10 (in 20 hrs) that I'm ready to pop the old mechanical HD back in that I took out 5 months ago (I've saved all the new files, emails, and bookmarks etc.). I wish I could unload on MS about what Win10 has done to my files and programs. You wouldn't believe all the stuff it threw away and hid and made inaccessible. Oh, and whereas Steam games ran fine on W7, now when I hit the Spacebar for inventory, I get black, flickering bars in Win10. Richard
rwprime1 Well, stupid me, you just "Remove" it (after making sure it was completely empty). However, instead of a 100MB D: volume, I now a have 101MB "unallocated" and although you can shrink C:, you can't expand it to get that permanently lost area. Also, since this was during a Win10 over Win7 install, here's a headsup. Win10 creates another non-lettered volume at 859MB.
Thank you so much sir it's saved my PC
my problem is: win 7 ultimate x64 , 1 - ssd for win,1 - 2Tb sshd for work , 2 - 1Tb hdds for save. The 2Tb sshd is the new device, one of the 1 Tb hdds was for work, and the 100 Mb partition is still on the 1 Tb hdd. I want to move the 100 Mb boot partition to the 2 Tb sshd, and disconnect the 2 save hdds.I did what you recommend, didn't work,I simply just see the cursor instead of the booting and nothing happens. My uefi boot options was: boot1:ssd,boot2: hdd,my new boot options: boot1:ssd,boot2: sshd.Any advices?
Nope couldn't even get past the first cmd line,
Thank you for this video, it was very helpful - I couldn't install win8 cos system reserved was only 100mb instead of 350 required. I looked on forums etc which told me I couldn't resize or create a new system reserved partition. To be honest wasn't expecting this to work as nothing else had worked.
:) Only down side is I now have windows 8.
i couldn't give you the link. Its called "how to hide system reserved partition in windows 7
thank you so much, now to figure out how to delete the old system reserved
This helped out big time, however, now I have a 3 TB hard drive, configured as an MBR, and it still has a system reserved volume, that I cannot delete, or remove so I can convert it to a GPT drive. Any ideas on how to do this?
I see a Drive named ''System Reserved'' on E: and I see a drive named 'Local Disk'' on F: what does that mean? can I delete System Reserved on E: ?
The created spare 300MB is showing as "Logical Drive" rather than "Primary Partition" as per your video. Does this matter...... I don't want to ruin things.
what happens if i dont want to move but i want to copy
I tried to do the same thing in Win10 and it didn't work. The partition was set to active and when I restarted the PC, it didn't become a system reserved partition, instead my drive F: (where I have lots of other files which I use in my day-to-day) continued to be one. At the moment I am thinking in reinstalling windows and removing the HDD altogether., but I'd rather not if there is a faster solution...
Hi Mike, thanks for the very useful video. Only problem I have is that after following your instructions to the letter for moving the System Reserved partition I still have the System Reserved other physical disc. Do I need to remove the old System Reserved file? Many Thanks.
helped me to install windows 10. Thanks dude!
I'll put a note on the video about this. In this circumstance delete the first 100MB partition then create a new one as then you'll still just have three
After doing as you said ,I have got in big problem "BOOTMGR is missing press ctrl+alt+del" to restart help me..........
Mike, after following all those steps, shouldn't we mark that new system reserved partition as active?
Very nice tutorial. I already have the maximum 3 primary partitions assigned (System Reserve, C:, and D:. Since disk managment will now only create logical partitions, can I still increase my System Reserved partition? The steps in the video will not allow me to "activate" on a logical partition.
Worked a charm! Cheers mate!
THANK YOU. How can I verify the boot, and other files have been truly saved on the new SYSTEM drive?
when I rebooted it told me it couldn't find windows OS and to unplug any drive that didn't have windows on it so I removed the new active boot drive and it worked again however I have the same problem of the system reserved still being on the wrong drive
Worked out great. Thanks!
why is it better to have the system reserved partition on the same disk as windows (on Win 10)?
Once this is done, can i delete the system files that were placed on my F disk with confidence? New vol (399MB) says "Active, Primary Partition" Ex "System Reserved" Hard Drive says "System, Active, Primary Partition" and still has a bunch of System files along with some old folders i had there before Windows 7 decided to hijack it
Can i start deleting all those system files?
There is much clearer online advice, using free partition software, or cloning/imaging copies to a new location. Renaming the partition self-evidently such as RECOVERY 10 etc. helps avoid confusion, independent from Drive letter mods. Some rebooting problems may arise, unless or until the boot manager is updated; issues arise when boot info is left on an older drive, new OS on multiple drives get added okay, but then one day you pull the old drive and all the boot info goes with it. Rescue CDs or USBs can be vital, and the Macrium Reflect generates them easily; just be sure to match the OS being used, as they don't always act nice. It is simple to make several for each era, and if needed one may work better than another with no irreversible damage done. You can go into run: msconfig.exe and manually enter some changes, but EasyBCD seems to fix non-booting issues better than most other ways, and msconfig shows the changes EasyBCD makes for you.
Thanks for the tutorial !! Worked great for me.
I would suspect the system partition contains a Windows rescue image placed there by the company you bought the PC from
sorry mike at the end it says the partition type is not valid for this operation .. my problem is that i cant get a new copy of windows because the System reserved folder is Full and i cant Format it :( i hope u know how to fix this
RUclips won't let me post a link here but search for my Windows 8 Start up Masterclass video. It goes into much more depth and contains more instructions, almost everything works in Win7 too. Good luck
Can System Reserved partition be infected by virus?
Thank you so much. Helped a lot
When repairing, can an acer recovery manager disk be used since my computer had windows 7 installed already so i don't have an installation disk?
No, it won't work as a Logical drive. It needs to be a primary partition. Do you already have three partitions on the drive? You can only have three primaries
Sorry to hear, there are more instructions in my Windows 8 Startup Masterclass (which also applies to Win7). RUclips won't let me post a link here but it's only my RUclips page. Good luck
This the same for windows 10?
That it meant a new system reserved has been created on drive G, and then how about the old system reserved, delete or what, it impossible have two system reserved ty..CMIW
FINALLY a fix that worked.
Mike, found your video after having Windows 7 Backup failing, which I think is due to the fact that I only have 100MB in the unnamed System Reserved partition on the Disk 0 that also holds my Boot (C:). I have shrunk the C to give me a spare 300MB, but it has put it to the right hand side of the C and I still cannot expand the SR into it.
Worked. I did need to use a third party software called EaseUS Partition Master 10.8 (from download.cnet.com) to change the new partition to a Primary Partition from a logic drive, before the command prompt commands would work.
Thanks
dammit i got the same msg. i have to reinstall Windows. This is a video on how to just hide the drive so it doesn't show up but is still there.
This proses windows10 worked not work reply plaese
Thanks alot this was very helpful!
Hi Mike, found your video, thanks for making it. It all makes sense and after doing the steps you advise I see no errors popping up. But still, after the restart and physically removing the drive that originally had the "100mb partition" (I'm on Win7) it's not possible to boot the system, and when I re-connect the other drive and run Computer Management I see that the original "100 mb" partition reads Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition) when the "new 100mb partition" only says Healthy (Active, Primary Partition) without the System. What have I missed?
Nevermind, I was removing the WRONG drive ha-ha. Thanks a lot!
OMG thank you!!!
The instructions here will allow you to move the system reserved partition. It's not important that it ends up at the far end of the disc, that's unimportant. The 100MB you currently have will then become unused space.
Yes there were already 3:- the unnamed 100MB; the 59.5GB Boot; and a 1GB OEM partition.
it was a great explination. i hope it works for my win 10 installation. Thank u!
I recently transferred my OS to a SSD and while it seems that a new system reserved partition is on the SSD it looks like the old system reserved partition on the HDD that the OS was previously installed on is still there. Would it be safe to delete this volume and extend it so it can be used for extra space? It doesn't appear to be active so I would assume it would be safe to do so.
That is correct as long you don't plan to use the Windows that you had installed in the old HDD. I personally kept a windows installation in a 100gb partition in a 2tb drive just in case the SSD windows installation fails completely beyond repair.
I cloned m hdd to an ssd and it has a 118 GB (not 118 MB) system reserved partition! It's a gateway PC. There is also a 130 GB called PQSERVICE. I know I don't want to mess with that, but how the heck did the system reserved partition come out as 118 GB!!
Yes It works Thanks
bcdboot C:\Windows/s G:
DISKPART
command accepted but when I entered next command
select volume G
it not accepted .... Please guide
make sure correct drive letter and running as admin
will this work on windows server 2008 R2 also ?
A much, much easier way is to Download Minitool Partition Manager for free from CNET. Increase size of Partition for the Win 10 install to more than 400MB. I used 548MB. That did the trick. No more Error we we could not adjust the reserved partition.
thank you so much, you helped figure a porblem i had
thank you very much Friend..!! was a useful tip!!
Thanks a lot.
Ty ♥
That intro dude
BootMGR fail... i have tried everything.. still not working... bugger.
Have you tried the advanced options in my Repairing Windows 8 startup Masterclass video? You'll need to search for it as RUclips won't let me put a link here
ON WINDOWS 7 you need to RESTART your computer. It will then show as a System drive.
Start your PC from a Linux OS on a disc CD/DVD and you can view its contents then :)
Followed the directions very accurately but did not work on my windows 7 system. I still can't remove my drive with the original System Reserved partition
