    I think that this was started by one person and finished by at least one other person. Given the styles of quilting and how this project was approached, it’s odd one person would change direction so many times. I watched on another channel, a woman who got (and finished), her mom’s quilts after she passed, so you could imagine how a quilt like yours ends up with the tantalizing twists and turns it does, but it’s just my supposition. It’s a sweet quilt and I’m happy it ended up in your caring hands.

      That is so true. I have 2 quilt that were made by my grandmother, and 2 great grandmothers. All made by hand. I can see on them the different hand stitching from the 3 of them.

    I love that this maker pieced some squares together. I do that too, sometimes. I have a quilt my grandmother made me and one of the blocks fell apart. My mom replaced that block, and its finally time for me to replace the binding. Three generations will have worked on that quilt.

    My great-great-grandmother, Ruth Payne Bever (1836-1922), always hand-pieced her quilt blocks. After my great-grandmother bought a sewing machine, she machine-sewed her mother's blocks together. My collection of antique and vintage family quilts includes many that are hand pieced and machine finished.

    My guess is that the backing, binding, and background fabric was cheap. IMartin's Department store here in Morehead, Kentucky, used to sell cotton fabrics, 5 yards for a dollar (only 35 inches wide). Mom thought that was high. However, she would buy it (and make our skirts, blouses, dresses, and other items from it). When Mom found fabric cheaper (with a good thread count) she would buy a lot of it. Sometimes the fabric was ugly; but, it was good enough. Have you ever noticed that some fabrics look better after they have faded?

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  2 года назад +1

      That is so interesting! When I researched the horseshoe fabric on the internet, it came up as feedsack, but when I looked in my feedsack reference books, I couldn't find it. Also, that is a lot of feedsacks if it is feedsack fabric! The odds of getting that much of the same print is low, in my opinion. I think your theory is much more plausible. And yes! I agree! I love the faded patina of this read. ❤️

      Also good idea to add repairs and dates done and by whom to the lable or add another if not enough room. Remember to wash any new add on fabric several times to prevent new fabric shrinking and tearing the old fabric.

    I do believe that is a quilt finished by another quilter. Or finished later and the backing fabric was not in the sun unlike the top which was put a bed where the sun came into the room. And the thread was all that was available when making the repair. It is a lovely quilt and it was fun to see it.

    My guess is that the fabric was either (1) very inexpensive, maybe on sale, or (2) given to the maker. This quilt was obviously well-used, and well-loved. What an interesting find! As others have guessed, I would speculate that there have been more than one set of hands contributiing to this quilt. Absolutely love this one!

    It is a two person quilt Probably mother/daughter. My grandma would buy suitable shirting fabric by the bolt if the price was right or any solids for that matter ! I do have a quilt that was quilt as you go or " apartment" style quilting and hand sewn down the middle then nearly folded on back and blind stitches by hand . I'm thinking the backing on this one was two fabric widths but needed enlarging so tidied it up by placing in middle . I have a couple similar pieced backs but the extra fabric on one side or other . I think that is maker's preference. We each tend to make up our own rules 😂 I can't see my grandma doing sashing like that . She and I both prefer a contrast . Yet if a top was too long she had no problem cutting a row of blocks in half ! I saw her so that and cringed! These ladies didn't fool around just got it done ! Much to my delight and yours ! 😂

I piece and do lots of things with the little one as it us mechanical and does not need as much service. I quilt and do fancy work with the bigger one in hope of stretching out servicing . Your room looks great! And I love the quilt

It doesn't have a brand label on it, but it was a package deal. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The other table that houses my Juki is a portable table I purchased from Amazon. Love that one, too! Not usually, no. Occasionally the family will be there and I can talk to them, but usually it the auctioneer is private about that type of stuff. As for the date, I think you are spot-on with the date, however. There are a few from the 1940s I think, but the majority of the fabrics is 1920s and 1930s. ❤️

    What a nice quilt. Perhaps the quilter wanted something to hand sew outside and then finished it off with the machine. Perhaps there was a sale on for the red fabric and she got the rest of the bolt. Haven't we all bought something because it was on sale and we liked it but had at that time no clue as to what we might do with it? We could go on and on about the scenarios but isn't it fun?

    Interesting! Red is such a fugitive dye sometimes - since it' faded on the front, I wonder if it was in an awfully sunny room and never moved, since the back isn't anywhere near as faded. Any idea about the age of the fabrics? Some can be dated by the pattern or color combos used I think.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  2 года назад

      That could be it! And yes, those reds are tricky, aren't they? I believe this is from the 1940s. There are some fabrics that appear to be from that time period.

    I think the quilt could have been worked on/repaired by more than one person. But not necessarily. The abundance of that Good Luck fabric (horseshoes & shamrocks) might indicate either being gifted or a large purchase, like maybe a bolt. Might have been a bargain price. The repair with the unfaded fabric reflects that the original quilt maker still had a bit of the fabric around. Why did it smell so bad, do you think? I like the quilt a lot 😊. Thank you for the video 🙂👍💕

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  2 года назад

      Oh! It could be! When I researched the Good Luck fabric, it came up as a feedsack print, but I couldn’t find that exact print in any of my feedsack reference material. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Also, that would be amazing if the maker found that many feedsacks in that exact print in the same condition. Hmmm. Something to think about! Thank you for your kind words. ❤️ You are so welcome!

    I must ask the obvious, and apologies if it’s been covered before. How do you get rid, or vastly minimize the stink? Do you use washing soda? Borax? Both? I’m guessing not Oxiclean. Do you use a detergent like Tide?

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  2 года назад

      Great question! I don't think I have covered this, actually. Well, at least not officially. I am alway reluctant to tell people how I wash my old quilts because I never what to unintentionally ruin someone else's old quilt with my advice, if that makes sense.
      For me, depending on the colors in the the quilts, how dirty it is, and what I am willing to risk, etc., I mix up my cleaning solution. Because of these various factors, my cleaning solution changes. It usually includes a combination of some or all of these: Boraax, washing soda, Fels-Nelpha soap (grated), Biz (found at Walmart), baking soda, and/or vinegar, and, of course, water (hot or cold, depending on the quilt). My best advice is to start with the most mild and work up from there. It is a risk/reward balance, if that makes sense. I hope this helps!

    Is it possible that the maker quilted the quilt in two separate pieces, machine joined the top two layers of the sections to each other, and then hand sewed the backing so the stitching wouldn’t show through the front? It looks like the kind of seam some people do when they are doing quilt-as-you-go and joining sections.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  2 года назад

      True! That could be it! There isn't a lump in the batting at the seam, but still, it could have been a variation of this construction. Great point! Thank you!

      I wish I could remember exactly how much this one was. I did purchase 12 old quilts that day (there were over 30 for sale at this auction, so I think I controlled myself mostly. HA!), and I sent a total of $550.00 at the auction 😬. I can't remember the exact amount of this one, though. Some I got for $20.00 because no one was really bidding on them, and others I got for around $100.00 because they were sought after. I really should have kept better track. This was one of my favorite auctions every. It was a 200-year-old family farm on 70 acres of land. It was a homestead and had been in the family since it was built. The best part is a family member won the highest bid, so the land and the farm will remain with the family for at least another generation. I talked with the family member about the quilts, but he didn't want any and didn't know who in the family made them. Still, a wonderful experience. Great auction with a great outcome!

      Great question! No, not yet. I did have one family who thought it was a quilt that belonged to them, but it turned out not to be the missing quilt once we chatted about it. If it were, I would have returned it to the family, of course. I would love to see these quilts go back to their families. As for the quilt from this video, I got this at an auction and the maker’s family was there. They had probably 50 or 60 of her quilts up for the auction. One of the family members said they took the ones they wanted but there was no way they could have kept all of them. I always try to talk the families into keeping them, if I can. Thank you so much for wondering about this! It shows your love for these old beauties and how they should be returned to the makers’ families. 🥰❤️
