Originally formed in Italy as Rhapsody, they established themselves as a power metal heavyweight in the 90's w/ their fusion of classic heavy metal and epic symphonic music w/ fantasy lyrics... They even got the (late) legendary actor Christopher Lee ('Dracula' ... 'Lord of the Rings') to narrate on their records... In 2006, a court case regarding the legal rights to the name 'Rhapsody' resulted in a ruling against the band; so, they altered the name to Rhapsody of Fire and released their 7th album 'Triumph or agony' under the new name.
The original Rhapsody featured Fabio Lione (vocals), Luca Turilli (guitar) and Alex Staropoli (keyboards)... To date, only keyboardist Alex Staropoli is in the Rhapsody of Fire line-up.
Rhapsody released their debut album 'Legendary tales' in 1997... it was followed up by - 'Symphony of enchanted lands' (1998)... 'Dawn of victory' (2000) ... 'Rain of a thousand flames' (2001) ... 'Power of the Dragonflame' (2002)
'Unholy warcry' was from their 6th album 'Symphony of enchanted lands II - The dark secret' in 2004... It was their most successful album to date before legal issues from the rights to the Rhapsody name forced the name change to Rhapsody of Fire in 2006.
'Triumph or agony' in 2006 included a 70-piece orchestra & choir on the record... and continued the band's longtime association w/ actor Christopher Lee narrating their records... It was followed up by 'The Frozen tears of angels' (2010) and 'From chaos to eternity' (2011)
However, more setbacks came as founding guitarist Luca Turilli left Rhapsody of Fire in 2011 and the band toured in 2012 without him.
Roberto De Micheli (guitar) joined Rhapsody of Fire and the band released 'Dark wings of steel' (2013) and 'Into the legend' (2016)... before vocalist Fabio Lione left the band... Longtime drummer Alex Holzwarth also quit.
In 2016, Giacomo Voli (vocals) was announced as the new singer of Rhapsody of Fire... they have since released 'The eighth mountain' (2019) and 13th album 'Glory for salvation' in 2021... their 14th album 'Challenge the wind' was released in early 2024.
Meanwhile, former guitarist Luca Turilli announced his band would be Luca Turilli's Rhapsody and released 2 albums w/ vocalist Alessandro Conti... 'Ascending to infinity' (2012) and 'Prometheus, Symphonia ignis divinus' (2015)
In 2018, they disbanded in favor of original Rhapsody singer Fabio Lione joining what became Turilli/ Lione Rhapsody... they released 1 studio album in 2019 - 'Zero gravity (Rebirth and evolution)' ... They disbanded in 2023 after a final tour.

Rhapsody, as they were then known, from Italy, was one of the three major bands to debut in 1997 and being instrumental in the European renaissance of traditional heavy metal. The two others were Hammerfall (Sweden) and Nightwish (Finland). Rhapsody went with a variety of lightning fast power metal (a style popularized a decade earlier by German super legends Helloween), greatly inspired by classical music and movie soundtracks. So for a while their style was popularly referred to as "Hollywood metal", though this term was quickly forgotten about. Rhapsody became historical as the first internationally successful Italian heavy metal band.. They later augmented their name to Rhapsody of Fire (to avoid legal issues) and also made the history books by making actor Christopher Lee (yes - THE Christopher Lee) a certified metalhead. After being employed as a narrator on an album by Rhapsody of Fire (of which you heard a recording here), Lee was so enamored with the powerful music that he himself decided to debut as a heavy metal singer on a similarly sounding concept album, "Charlemagne: By the sword and the cross" in 2010 - at the age of 90!
In 2011, Rhapsody of Fire divided into two parallel entities following an amicable split between the band's two creative forces: guitarist Luca Turilli and keyboardist Alex Staropoli. The former moved on with Luca Turilli's Rhapsody, an entity that underwent a somewhat curious musical development performing an unheard of variety of classical music with heavy metal instrumentation. Alex Staropoli has kept the name Rhapsody of Fire and the musical style associated with that name. He was joined by the original band's third mainstay, singer Fabio Lione, who however has since moved on and is nowadays fronting Brazilian power metal heroes Angra.

Rhapsody of Fire is so great that they even had Christopher Lee in some songs. Really an important band in european metal scene. React to Dawn of Victory, one of their best songs.
