Australia's deportation rules are really stern as well, cause problems, break the law, or get into massive trouble, and there's a high chance that your gone, back to your home country. From the times I've heard Russell Crowe in interviews he really does seem to embody the character of Maximus. The honor and decency seems to be real or at least I hope so.
New Zealand went through a period of fairly open borders to migrants, which then quickly became a backdoor into Australia since our laws state that anyone here for only five years can apply for citizenship, and it is very rarely refused. Australia has been clamping down on NZ to Australia migration for the last 20-something years because of this. New Zealand has changed to a points-based immigration system to make it harder for people to come in but the criteria for points is so broad that it means a basic proficiency in English and a tertiary qualification is pretty much all you need to get enough points for the opportunity to get permanent residency.
Australia is one of the most selfish countries for Visa grants. I only came here to be near my mother and my only option to stay here has been through a process which has been 8 years long so far. It’ll be another 5 years (at least) until I get citizenship. That’s a total “process” time of 13 years, for a country with enormous wealth, copious free space, and labour shortages.
My 3 sons were born in Canada to an Australian mother and a Canadian father, and, have lived all but one year in Canada. They hold dual Canadian and Australian citizenships, as does their mother. Perhaps he should seek advice from a Citizenship lawyer.
There’s a special ,and horrible, exception for New Zealanders. So it’s easier for Canadians. One of the reasons was racist Australians complaining about Maoris coming to Australia in quite large numbers. A bad law all around.
@@fionahamer7202 oh. I thought maybe it had something to do with all the New Zealander jokes we heard in our year in Newcastle involving sheep and gumboots.

That's probably because of the limits to your understanding. There are significant limitations to the rights of New Zealanders living in Australia, regardless of how long they have been there, that is not matched by reduced taxes.
according to this website Kiwis must have lived in Oz for 6 months to get a medicare card. www.humanservices.gov.au/individuals/enablers/who-can-get-medicare-card#NewZealandcitizen - So no need to even take out citizenship. To be honest that sounds fair. So I still don't know what unfair restrictions on Kiwis you are referring to.
Australia's citizenship rules are bloody stupid... even Australians got locked out or in the country during Covid.. my wife has to remain in Australia 5 years to achieve Australian citizenship.. she can only leave with written approval for short duration family emergencies during this time... so no holidays overseas
As someone who has been through immigration systems in several countries, I respect Crowe for not taking the "nudge nudge, wink wink" approach, which undoubtedly has been offered to him on many occasions.
Australian-New Zealand bureaucracy... it can be the worst. Russel Crowe is damn fine dude for pointing this out and also lining up like everyone else to suffer through attaining citizenship. New Zealand is in fairly dire need of medical professionals, though one news report I saw a few years ago showed a British doctor choosing Australia instead of New Zealand (where she wanted to go) because immigration NZ couldn't get it's act together and work with her. I hope the situation has changed since then.
New Zealand needs doctors because a large amount of NZ doctors live and work in Australia because you get paid far better in Aus with more opportunities. Plus you can live and work in Aus as a locom (casual), but have your residence registered in NZ and hence pay the lower top tax bracket of 39% in NZ vs 45% in Aus. Source... 3 doctors in my family.
As Muldoon said, every time someone emigrates from New Zealand to Australia they raise the IQ in both countries. Its good of him to champion their cause.
As an Aussie I had no idea about this. I knew he was originally an NZer but I always assumed he had his citizenship. I can’t believe it’s been so difficult for him. This for me is mind blowing 🤯. Danielle and the kids are Aussie, why is it so hard for him? He has an Aussie accent and counts himself as one. Bloody crazy!
Soooo, he's not a citizen because the Australian immigration laws are extremely demanding. And people complain about the United States' immigration laws.
As a Kiwi who has lived in Australia since 2001 and shared similar issues i can say that a couple of years ago they did change the rules to make it easier and I got my Australian citizenship, it's also a known fact that Australians try to steal Kiwi's and pretend they are Australians, Crowded House for example..
Great kiwi and we are happy if he wishes to stay in oz. Hes a successful man and can afford to support his family there so no problem. We wish him well and continued success.

Good on you RC ! It’s a pathetic situation and institutional racism on Australian government part v NZ residents
Australian immigration joke… When asked if you have a criminal record, enquire is one is still needed 🤣
And that is why Russell Crowe is a national treasure both in Oz and Aotearoa :).
jesus these interviewers are terrible.
They're just Americans is all lol
We went to the same school in Auckland NZ. Was in the same class as his cousin Martin. Lovely fella, have nothing bad to say about the Crowes
He's been explaining this to Superman for years.
Wow what a guy every interview and talksgow with russel crowe makes me like him even more
Australia is one of the most selfish countries for Visa grants. I only came here to be near my mother and my only option to stay here has been through a process which has been 8 years long so far. It’ll be another 5 years (at least) until I get citizenship. That’s a total “process” time of 13 years, for a country with enormous wealth, copious free space, and labour shortages.
This is why I like the crowe
I knew he was a great guy, this interview is only yet another confirmation. Well done, sir.
My neighbour's parrots imitating voices like these guys in the studio.
My 3 sons were born in Canada to an Australian mother and a Canadian father, and, have lived all but one year in Canada. They hold dual Canadian and Australian citizenships, as does their mother. Perhaps he should seek advice from a Citizenship lawyer.
New Zealanders are a special case. Doesn’t work the way you think it might.
Thank you Russell for calling us "New Zealanders" and not "Kiwis"!
On ya, mate. Always welcome back in NZ for beerzies.
I agree with him completely and I love his attitude about not jumping the queue just because of what he does or who he is. People like that are not the ones that you want as part of your country. I hope that by now he is a citizen, I actually thought he was. I’m an Aussie btw. Apart from film/ the arts, Australian ex and kids, he also owns a Rugby League team - The Rabbitohs. I also think that his Oscar speech should go down as the best one EVER!!!! I’d probably have him at my table of 8, you know where you pick people living and from the past to dinner. He seems like an all round good bloke, who likes a drink (😂), and would have some brilliant stories (no recording devices allowed 😂😂😂).
Cousin of the great Kiwi batsman Martin Crowe and his brother Jeff - Kiwi icons of sport. His desire for Aussie citizenship is beyond reproach, he's a father of Aussie kids - top bloke.
This is so inspiring. Thank you Russel for doing the right thing.
no access to education or medical? absolute bs... come on mate!
Maybe he's talking about free health care for citizens only, like in Canada where I live.
My understanding is Kiwis have access to medicare just like Australians, centrelink, HECS ect so i dont know what Russell is complaining about
That's probably because of the limits to your understanding.
Break your leg in NZ and you get looked after, no questions, that's the last I heard anyway.
Australia's citizenship rules are bloody stupid... even Australians got locked out or in the country during Covid.. my wife has to remain in Australia 5 years to achieve Australian citizenship.. she can only leave with written approval for short duration family emergencies during this time... so no holidays overseas
Surprising considering that he is known as the Australian actor.
His accent is 100% Aussie - he'd say fish 'n chips perfectly.
I can't believe Australia doesn't give Crowe preferential treatment because he's famous and rich. It's outrageous!
Well he said that it could be arranged. If only he weren't such a Byronic hero, a Man Alone.
@@KayAteChef Crowe is a victim for sure.
@@richardmckrell4899 I believe immigrants can get residency faster than him
Soooo, he's not a citizen because the Australian immigration laws are extremely demanding.
A man of morals that doesnt want to sneak in through the back door
Great kiwi and we are happy if he wishes to stay in oz. Hes a successful man and can afford to support his family there so no problem. We wish him well and continued success.
Awesome dude... appreciate you Russell
he's right, my government is afraid if it lets in one person with a legitimate claim like Rusty, it opens the doors for 100,000s of similar cases... but that's not the point, we should be welcoming anyone who wants to celebrate Australia & contribute to the Australian ideal & society... unfortunately our government thinks Russell & millions of others are a threat
Stamps aren't illegal if the queen isn't on a stamp. As long as it's issued from the post office. Charlie Chaplin has been on the UK ones twice.
Russel speaks about his fav topic, himself
It is unfair. I agree.
The white guy is incredibly annoying. No, not Crowe, the other one.
you racist piece of shit
Lona Ehlers Your response needs an explanation, dear. You've been triggered more than billy the kids' revolver.
@Marco Yeah, I wasn't watching the screen at 1:20 and suddenly heard a squeak, and thought it was Russell doing a voice of his kids, since he was just talking about them. WTF.
He is a KIWI !! We still claim him as OURS !! Go Bro Go..
The thing is the ‘nudge nudge wink wink’ might actually get things flowing, the way it should be.
Maybe the greatest actor of our time.
Quite simply, he's great. Forget Gladiator, watch him I'm the great remake of 4:10 to Yuma. A very deep and complex character and, he does an AWESOME Americian, 'western accent, not easy to pull off.
Good for Australia.
Im an Aussie my Dads a Kiwi I keep asking the government to send him back no luck yet our immigration department is super slow 😂
This sounds like Spike Milligan all over again.
'$250000 dollar people'. Man is focused on money 😂
Everyone thinks all the Nazis fled to South America but I have always had a theory that many of them ended up running Australian immigration.
While everyone thinks all the nazis fled to South America, with their scientists the US joined the Space Race, with their “Local Networks” stopped on its tracks in France, Italy and Greece the Post-WWII advance of Communism into Western Europe and kept underground groups sabotaging behind the Iron Curtain, with their Business Class consolidated Central/Northern Europe (from Switzerland/Austria to Sweden/Norway) as Europe’s richest region, Germany as its industrial/financial/Political Powerhouse, and created the Middle Eastern Mediterranean European Exclave of Nazionist Israel.
Just look what kind of furiously Russophobic “Nazionalist” are currently running the former Warsaw Pact, Eastern European NATO countries.
I’m a New Zealander, I love Australia but I’d never live there! Here in Christchurch we have access to skiing, snowboarding , hunting, tramping, mountaineering, gliding, flying, yachting, fishing, etc etc without the horrible Aussie snakes, spiders, crocs etc. Good on Russell Crowe for his stance. Thanks for standing up for Kiwis rights over there. Kiwi bashing has become an Aussie past time ever since the Keating Government. I’m afraid.
nz citizens indeed get tertiary education and medical services in aus. at domestic rates, ie same as aussies.
Ty Russell for standing up for us here in australia
