    1st - I am an Australian, born and bred. 2nd - I have never been a massive Russell Crowe fan. That said - I find Russell's position very commendable. Australia and New Zealand have always (since colonisation and perhaps before) shared a bond. We rag each other mercilessly but when push comes to shove we will be in each others corner. In the last couple of decades Australian and to a lesser extent New Zealand polititians have moved to distance us from each other. Its time politicians were reminded that they are there to serve us not to "dictate" the rules. Most Aussies consider Kiwis like a sibling, entiteled to their independance but welcome in our house anytime. Its time our laws reflected this. Good onya Russell.

      Not sure why you think New Zealand, be it politicians or anyone else "have moved to distance us from each other". All the restrictions to government services or ability to quickly become a joint citizen lie on the western side of the Tasman.
      All the restrictions Crowe outlines he and other 250000 kiwis face living in Australia simply don't exist for expat Australians in NZ. They get same access to NZ's healthcare system as NZers, social benefits including education one, hell they can vote in NZ elections once they have lived in NZ for 1 year. . The only restrictions I know of is that they can't be elected to public office nor obviously travel on a NZ passport. Its also very easy for an Australian to become a joint NZ/Aussie citizen
      All the barriers/ problems have been created by Australia as a succession of governments attempts to use "Nationalism" or "Protecting Australia" as a vote winner by excluding non-citizens, but legal residents from various Benefits they previously enjoyed. If you voted for any of the various governments since Hawke left office then you have been part of the cause of this issue, I suspect unknowingly.
      If its a sibling erelationship, its a dysfunctional, abusive one on the the part of Australia.

      Australia's deportation rules are really stern as well, cause problems, break the law, or get into massive trouble, and there's a high chance that your gone, back to your home country. New Zealanders make up a large amount of people deported from Australia, I know of one, he was born in Auckland, eventually left for Australia, was married to an Australian woman, had kid's, 20 years after he left New Zealand, he was back here own his own, left without a choice but to start all over again from scratch, He and his wife were both on drugs, and start fighting, ended really badly, his wife ended up in hospital, he was jailed, and after he served his time, he was sent back here to New Zealand, he struggled to get used to Auckland again because it looked dramatically different from when he left,

      So who is in a better position to afford it? It's not Australia. I have met and I have known many Kiwis in my life and when they work they send the majority of money back to NZ and hardly anything spent in OZ. That's one of the reasons Howard changed the laws because it wasn't beneficial to the country they were working in. AND the Aussie dollar was worth way much more to the Kiwi dollar so they were cleaning up.It didn't matter they were paying taxes either because the rate was only 15% back then and now the first $20,000 is tax free so they would be still winning.

    New Zealand went through a period of fairly open borders to migrants, which then quickly became a backdoor into Australia since our laws state that anyone here for only five years can apply for citizenship, and it is very rarely refused. Australia has been clamping down on NZ to Australia migration for the last 20-something years because of this. New Zealand has changed to a points-based immigration system to make it harder for people to come in but the criteria for points is so broad that it means a basic proficiency in English and a tertiary qualification is pretty much all you need to get enough points for the opportunity to get permanent residency.

I hope that by now he is a citizen, I actually thought he was. I’m an Aussie btw. Apart from film/ the arts, Australian ex and kids, he also owns a Rugby League team - The Rabbitohs. I also think that his Oscar speech should go down as the best one EVER!!!! I’d probably have him at my table of 8, you know where you pick people living and from the past to dinner. Australia is one of the most selfish countries for Visa grants. I only came here to be near my mother and my only option to stay here has been through a process which has been 8 years long so far. It’ll be another 5 years (at least) until I get citizenship. That’s a total “process” time of 13 years, for a country with enormous wealth, copious free space, and labour shortages.

    Australian-New Zealand bureaucracy... it can be the worst. Russel Crowe is damn fine dude for pointing this out and also lining up like everyone else to suffer through attaining citizenship.
    New Zealand is in fairly dire need of medical professionals, though one news report I saw a few years ago showed a British doctor choosing Australia instead of New Zealand (where she wanted to go) because immigration NZ couldn't get it's act together and work with her.
    I hope the situation has changed since then.

    • @CupiDany
      @CupiDany 2 месяца назад

      New Zealand needs doctors because a large amount of NZ doctors live and work in Australia because you get paid far better in Aus with more opportunities. Plus you can live and work in Aus as a locom (casual), but have your residence registered in NZ and hence pay the lower top tax bracket of 39% in NZ vs 45% in Aus. Source... 3 doctors in my family.

    What Russell probably doesn't realise is why Australia set up that policy in the first place. Unlike Australia, New Zealand makes it very easy to get citizenship there. People were using NZ as a backdoor to get into Australia, gaining citizenship there, then immediately going to Australia and applying to go on welfare benefits. It was an obvious and chronic loophole being exploited. To stop that exploitation, Australia changed the rules so that NZ citizens can reside there freely, but they aren't eligible for welfare benefits and have to be full paying university students.

    As a Kiwi who has lived in Australia since 2001 and shared similar issues i can say that a couple of years ago they did change the rules to make it easier and I got my Australian citizenship, it's also a known fact that Australians try to steal Kiwi's and pretend they are Australians, Crowded House for example..

    Good for him on not seeking special treatment. However, the headline for this post makes it sound as if Russell has had numerous failed attempts to gain citizenship, when the reality is that he's only just got around to making a serious application.
    On the "time in residence" question, when I finally got around to applying for citizenship myself after 25 years, the Immigration Department used my re-entry in 1975, rather than my initial entry as a TPP with my parents in 1960 as the start of my qualifying residence. It's just that a readily available record makes for a much quicker process than searching immigration records.
