Because it's canon, Merlin waited a thousand years for Arthur and he'll wait a thousand more
Well I think I have exhausted all the tears in me. Words don't describe the tears I shed during Merlin and Arthur's final moments together and just when I thought I couldn't cry anymore I made this.
I have always wanted to vid this song but I never had the inspiration to do it and do it well but after Merlin's finale on Christmas Eve it just had to be done. I thought the ending was so so but Arthur's death scene was spot on and I just had so many emotioonnnssss. Everytime I watch it I find something new to cry about. I will miss this show a lot, it always provided some light-hearted fun along with the drama and I sorely need that in my shows lol.
But on a more serious note I would really just like to thank Merlin for a wonderful ride and the fandom for being so nice. Merthur is my second favourite ship and I just love them to pieces. I don't care what way you view their relationship but to me it was one of the best on television and it was such a joy to watch them grow together. Ugh no more before I dissolve again.
So I hope I did them justice and that you all like it!

The sad thing is, is that they were planning to do another series. At the end, we see Merlin in modern day, and that was somehow, when Arthur was to be born again. As the dragon states multiple times, Arthur is the "once and FUTURE king" and saying he will "Rise again". This means Arthur would have somehow been resurrected and Arthur and Merlin would have to cope with modern society..... So sad now!
They were planning on it, but from interviews I've read, Bradley wasn't interested.

Resurrecting Arthur simply wouldn't work. He's the "Once and Future King". Emphasis on "Future". Is Albion's need greatest now? The last episode hits me each time, but it's canon and there could be no other ending.
Gwen was his wife and companion in leadership. Arthur loved her because she always shared the same values in life and she supported him as a Prince and king. But Merlin, Merlin was different. He never saw Arthur as a Prince or a king. He saw him as a human being. His arrogant, spoilt, self-obsessed and proud side, but also compassionate, loyal, forgiving and strong side. He's the only person who has ever TRUELY seen Arthur for who he is. They have a love and loyalty that goes beyond Gwen.

It's funny because Arthur's death still destroys me. You think after so much time I would get over it but whenever I watch the last episode I always cry so much that I have trouble breathing 😂 One time I puked I was crying so hard... hahaha hahaha I am way too emotionally invested in this pairing.

Merlin Arthur I toad my mum I wanted to get a dark coloured bearded dragon called kilgarrah and a albino one called authusa. She toad me to get over it and it was like being punched in the stomach. I've been toad I'm obsessed over and over again but I'm not, i just don't have much else I'm passionate about and there just something about it, I can just watch it again and again over and over and I know there's other people like me, I believe that Merlin changed my life and I worry that one day I will wake up and not care about it as much and it scares me. @@granville7 if you've watched "the real Merlin and Arthur" where b and c are on a road trip together you'll find that Bradley looks at him in the same way. The actors were probably really close, though Arthur did love merlin also 💕

@@rosina29 sure I get this!^^ and Bradley is certainly excused for everything he did [in public] regarding Colin. C'mon, give the man a break. He had to work with Colin for 40months over 5yrs. If anything, I admire his restraint and control of himself. Can you imagine any young actor in the role of Arthur who had to work with Colin and *not* adore him to the point where everyone thinks he is smitten? Colin is irresistable and Bradley should be congratulated for dealing with it in a very commendable way. What I mean to say is: it's a wonder the internet isn't filled with images of Bradley hugging and kissing Colin^^

I'm always amazed at how Merlin looks at Arthur with such admiration and awe, and yet he is the one with the powers of magic. In my experience, that's not subservience, it's love.
This song perfectly sums up Merlin and how he waits for Arthur. Waiting for a thousands years is what Merlin will do to see his friend again. This is so awesome I love it yet hate it because I cried soooo much!

I never realized how much subtext was in this show until now. They spend a ton of time just staring lovingly at each other.
I am a massive fan of merlin and I don't cry a lot but I don't know why but the last episode on Christmas Eve broke me up it was so sad. I can't believe the bbc cut it short. But never the less this is the best TV series ever I just love it.

I’m not kidding when I say that I come to see this video at least every month… I can’t describe, every time I’m overwhelmed by emotions 🥹🤧 this is beyond perfection, I’ll never get over them and their beautiful tragic love story… what they have is so deep and powerful that giving it “a name” would minimize everything. It’s a connection, a love, a bond, a soul connection, a home, a whole that waits to reunite again… is all of this and so much more that is impossible to describe🤧
But of one thing I’m sure, I’ll forever love the quote that I read, some months ago, on an old article about the finale:

I’m a year late, but if you didn’t know, the writers of the show wrote a script for season 6, but bbc didn’t use it. It’s still on tumblr though, and it's flippin amazing. It's really emotional at the beginningXD

Merlin is completely and utterly perfect. They have written the most important and beautiful character known to human and wizard kind. He's strong, caring, passionate, wonderful, brave, and most importantly, he's the other side of Arthur's coin. Merlin's the tail and Arthur is the head. The head of Camelot of which without Merlin, there wouldn't be Albion. The kingdom of them. Thank you, BBC, for showing us that even though magic might not exist in this form, it exist within us. Each and every one of the people on Planet Earth. We are our own magic. We just need someone to accept us. When we find that person, they are going to support whatever we choose to do with our limited time on Earth until we return to Heaven. Yes, this might very well be a fictional show with made up people and characters, but it's that percentage in all of us that keeps us going. That part, however small, that still believes in magic, in hope, in the kindness and bravery of others. Don't give up, any of you. You are enough.

This is about everlasting love. It's about the melting of one soul into another. It has nothing to do with gender, it has nothing to do with age. It's about the love a parent feels for a child, when this precious person dies there are no words to describe the agony caused by their loss but it must be endured. Beautifully captured by Colin Morgan in this episode.

Every time I read a fanfic about Merlin spending nearly two millennia on the dwindling shores of Avalon, waiting for Arthur to return, this song is in my head, tears pouring down my face 😭. So I had to take a break from breaking my own heart to come look for Merthur edits with this song 😅.

Although Merlin can live for thousands of years at a time, as Arthur rises once again, he will have no recollection of who Merlin is or what Camelot was, yet, he will find himself drawn to what was once Camelot, he will be drawn to Merlin, and that proves that they are soulmates

Just hearing the beginning notes to 'A Thousand Years' is enough to make me keel over as the feels overwhelm me. Everyone of my OTPs has a video using this song and each one of them is beyond beautiful yet heartbreaking. For the Sherlock fandom, it was the 'Alone on the Water' fanvideo and the Merlin fandom, this is the best use of this song. So thank you from the bottom of my fangirl heart.

What I love about Merlin is that it shows that “your other half” or “two sides of the same coin” doesn’t mean true love it just means friendship and loving someone without it having to be romantic like Merlin and Arthur they are best friends

Absolutely! Their bond is undeniable, unbreakable and stronger than any bond between the knights. Arthur values Merlin's opinion above all else! And everything Merlin does is for Arthur, for Camelot, for the kingdom he's destined to build, for Albion, and most of all for his best friend! I know a lot of Merthur fans want to see them as a couple, but I don't see it like that. I love this edit because it shows their bond beautifully. But, again, I don't believe their story is nor should it ever be romantic in nature.
I know many will disagree with me, and that's okay. To each their own. But, the Arthurian legends don't show them in a romantic way and neither does Merlin. I love what they have, and I couldn't wish for anything more.

Also, I only joined the Merlin fandom recently (as in I only finished S5 like a month and a half ago) and balled my eyes out like crazy. Also, I watched it Thursday night, and I’m a college student and I had class in the morning, and I was there in class still fighting back my tears, struggling (and failing) to concentrate on the lecture…it was not a fun day because all I wanted to do was curl up into a ball and cry over Arthur’s death 😭😭😭😭😭 (it also really didn’t help matters that by this point in watching the series I had developed a SERIOUS crush on Arthur, and then HE DIED 😭)
So I was incredibly lucky that I stumbled upon a comment later that night speaking about the 6th season of Merlin script. I searched it and listened to the first episode that Friday night…and sobbed myself to sleep again, but for a different reason than I had the night before :)

Whichever way you look at it here there is love. Whatever that may mean to each person who watched this series. When it comes to Merlin & Arthur love is a very prominent feature between the two of them. That love can mean whatever to whoever but it's there no denying that ❤❤

That's how the legend went. It ended with his death. Although, they could've still had one more season.
Struggle Skywalker even if they had another season it’s possible that it would have ended with Arthur dying etc. because as you say, that’s how the legends go.

You can always notice that Arthur and Merlin are very close and that there like brothers and very best friends and that's why there love for each other is so close because they care for each other very much.

This series and its finale means so much to me as a fangirl and shipper, it's like a veil was finally lifted off my eyes - who we are and what we stand for. "I want you to always be you". This was a transpersonal message, but for it to be such, it would first have to be fully personal (i.e. Arthur saying it to Merlin, like "God to Goddess" talk - so I also thought of Jesus and Mary there, that she doesn't have to change...). I can't thank everyone enough, for this amazing series.
