What's RUINING Blue Sky Studios?

- Blue Sky Studios is the outcast when it comes to the big animation studios of the industry. Why is that? Why have they struggled to make an impression on people outside of Ice Age? And is that struggle ruining the studio?

Well when they bought Fox, Blue Sky came with it.
Just found out that Disney is shutting down Blue Sky Studios. Now they’re ruined.
They were ruined since Disney bought Fox. Like, why would they need a third animation studio? I honestly saw that coming. What a shame.
I know right Disney could have sold Blue Sky Studios to somebody else. But instead they want to get rid of competition and ruining people's childhood memories by remaking movies and making them live action and ruining Pixar and blue sky.
Hey, you look familiar.

If he would sell Blue Sky Studios then people can be happy still because Blue Sky Studios would still be around and all those people would still have a job
UPDATE: after being bought out by Disney, as of February 2021 Blue Sky has officially closed it's doors. Disney cites the losses caused by Covid-19 affecting box office sales. RIP Blue Sky
Goodbye Blue Sky. You provided me with some fun movies during my childhood. You will be remembered. Maybe not fondly, but remembered.
That sounds like something Fox would do: a studio/franchise/series loses some money temporarily due to something outside of anyones control so they take it out behind their back lot and put it down like Old Yeller. Blue Sky had _one_ movie that didnt make alot of profit and t still got a 76% on rotten tomatoes and it still probably broke even. Their last movie before Covid made back nearly 3 times its budget so it probably made at least $70-80 million in profit after marketing, which is good, and their movie before that (the last Ice Age movie) likely made $200 million in profits. Their movies also usually make alot of money on the side thanks to merchandising. They killed a financially successful studio for no reason.

One thing Ice Age also forgot about is Manny's original family. They are mentioned in the first movie, but never expanded upon.
They died. Wasn't Manny the mammoth calf? That means he was too young to remember his herd when he was separated from them. Or maybe he repressed his memories cuz of trauma.
@@jodex_md8008 Manny was the father, his wife and child were killed by humans not long before the first movie takes place. Disney is shutting down the company!
The fact that Disney shut down Blue Sky says a lot how useless and worthless the studio is for Disney's eyes. Otherwise, they would've done whatever is possible to keep it going.
Kinda, Disney would have rather kept it but due to Covid they needed to make some cuts, and Blue Sky was deemed unnecessary, especially because they already have Pixar and WDAS. I’m sure if it wasn’t for Covid-19, Disney would have done there best to keep the studio alive.
Because Disney are retards.
Now they've claimed Ice Age for their own, and are probably going to run it into the ground even more (as if the 5th movie didn't cause enough damage)...
@@SasquaDash The last Blue Sky project came out this April.
Almost all Blue Sky movies have been underrated since Ice Age, Rio and Robots, The Peanuts was super underrated. When i went to see Ferdinand I didn't see ANYONE in the Cinema and I loved the movie.

@Caleb Mayfield RIP Robin Williams
Lolzerous Aja yes..
And now, Blue Sky is being shut down. . May Blue Sky Studios rest in peace
It basically got ran over by Dreamworks and Disney. Dreamworks is not even the biggest animation company and yet it gets 200Mx more attention than Blue Sky studios. Blue Sky studios never got any recognition for nothing, people always assumed that it was Dreamworks lol. It is for the best, hopefully the founder finds a new studio and start working on much more creative and clever projects. R.I.P Ice Age.😢.
Yes (CRYING)
The difference between the Pixar purchase and the Blue Sky purchase is that Pixar was just one studio that Disney was actually looking forward to buy in hopes that they could improve their own animation studio. Blue Sky was just like an afterthought, like a studio that just came with the Fox purchase, as if you ordered a McDonald's meal but you won't eat the fries because you won't need them, and instead of storing them in the fridge to eat them later, you throw them away.
Best example.
No, I think Disney pulled a 'Big Tech buyout' move; where a large company buys out an up-and-coming competitor so they can absorb or discard their innovations:
MonsterSound bought up Aureal and didn't use their Aureal3D sound modelling system
Microsoft bought the MagicSpell client and all patents, and its functionality has never returned to the PC desktop.
Facebook bought encrypted messenger WhatsApp and eventually folded them into their 'all your data are belong to us' privacy policy.
I don't think it was an afterthought; I think it was a corporate chess move.
@@HuntingTarg Well, good point. Buy the competition and destroy it! Though imo Blue Sky wasn't really that big of a threat to Disney because most of their movies that aren't Ice Age don't perform well at the box office, but I can see that in the sense that right when they started getting promising, they shut it off. Disney wants to be the only player in the game called feature animation, right?
*BLUE SKY > ILLUMINATION*
Just gonna leave this here.

Three words: ICE. AGE. SEQUELS. (And while Ice Age 4 & (especially) 5 are easy targets for examples of Blue Sky Studios that gave me a mixed opinion on the animation studio’s feature films whereas sometimes they could make classics of the early 21st Century (2000s - 2010s) like Ice Age 1 & 3, Rio 1, Horton Hears a Who, Spies in Disguise (mostly), Robots and The Peanuts Movie, they are also the animation studio that gave us Ice Age 2, 4 & 5, Rio 2 (I’ll give it this, though, to be fair with the people that actually like this movie. Its soundtrack is epic!) and Ferdinand.)

Here after hearing the sad news that Blue Sky is Shutting Down.
I’m more sad for the animators losing their jobs and the Nimona no longer being released than the studio itself being closed down.
Nimona is the first Blue Sky that I’ve been interested in seeing since Peanuts... and now that’s never going to be released.
@@carsfan1995 Now _Nimona_ is being canceled thanks to the announcement thus the _Adventures of Buck Wild_ will be their final Blue Sky Studios film for Disney+ in 2022.
I'm extremely saddened and disappointed by this news cause I grew up with their animated films and it was one of the animation Studios that Disney decided to keep after the Fox Acquisition, but due to COVID-19 they decided to shut them down.
It's going to be interesting what's going to happen with the Blue Sky IP following the release of the _Adventures of Buck Wild_ so odds are more than likely will treat it as a name only company within 20th Century Animation similar to Hanna-Barbera within Warner Bros Animation. 😔
@@EChacon
Also, the animators are being given jobs at Disney’s other animation studios so that’s at least good for them.
I'm afraid though not everybody is going to be able to get a job at Disney though. There's way too many people that work at Blue Sky Studios. Which means they're still going to be people getting laid off. Now Disney could sell Blue Sky Studios to somebody else. At least that's what I would do if I were Disney. That way no one has to worry about losing their jobs at Blue Sky Studios.
@@carsfan1995 PEANUTS IS BY BLUE SKY???

Ice Age: Amazing, I love it, it's got good plot, and it's a nice take on Homeward Bound, but with ice age animals
Robots: Didn't see it, got a meme format in it
Ice Age: the Meltdown: It's great, sure it's not the original, but I like it, giving Mannie the conclusion to the question of if he's the last mammoth
Horton Hears a Who: Meh, doesn't seems best, well it's Doctor Seuss, so it's gonna be good
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs: It's great another awesome Ice Age movie, and it's the cast set against dinosaurs
Rio: Great, it's got comedy and a great plot, and the plot is great, and seeing poachers, and it's in an exotic location
Ice Age: Continental Drift: Yeah, it's not the best, seems like the Odessey brought into the Ice Age, with pirates though, if looks like it means Ice Age has left it's prime
Epic: It's good, plot is nice, and it looks pretty great
Rio 2: It's good, sure it's not the original, and seeing them in the Amazon is cool
Peanuts: Awesome, I like it, it's quality, plot is great, and it's the Peanuts, and come on, Pilot Snoopy is in it.
Ice Age: Collision Course: Yeah, not the best, too much of milking the series
Ferdinand: It's good, sure it's not the best, but it's pretty good
Spies in Disguise: Will Smith and Tim Holland are in it, that'll make it better than it'd be without 'em
I'd say Bluesky is being ruined by too many Ice Age movies
Nicely said.
I agree with this. As someone who's seen them all, I'll share my own interpretation (don't feel like you have to read it):
Ice Age: One of my favorite movies growing up. I didn't like the designs of the people because they looked really smooth and had odd proportions, but the plot was great and the character dynamics were incredible
Robots: I loved this one as a kid. It's got a LOT of weird humor, stuff for both kids and older teens, but the plot holds up well with the bad guys trying to get everyone to be vain and spend money for the sake of looking better (my brother and I would quote the 'BIG anime eyes' bit all the time)
Ice Age 2: Kind of like HTTYD 2, it's a good movie that really expands on the world of the original, but it delivers a narrative shift that's *just* barely too different to lose people's attention
Horton Hears a Who: The struggles and concepts are great, but there's too much filler content, too many gags that are really just put in there to fill out the runtime where we could see a longer climax
Ice Age 3: Kind of revived the series. It wasn't necessary in any way, but it still contributed greatly to the world development while being entertaining and consistent enough for everyone to stay interested
Rio: I honestly loved this one growing up. There's a good amount of dumb jokes in it, but the concept was great and made for a good attempt to use a compelling story to get people's support for a dying species
Ice Age 4: This one felt like the first cash grab that the company had produced, and I didn't even remember it existed until recently
Epic: Like Horton, there's a lot of filler content, but it takes a previously used concept and displays it in a very unique way
Rio 2: I honestly disagree with your opinion on this one. It felt like another cash grab. If they'd taken the concept of Rio and applied it to a different threatened species they could've made a whole series of movies rallying support for different species by portraying the human cultures surrounding those species for the audience to connect to them
Peanuts: This one is surprisingly good. I went into it expecting to be disappointing, but they do a really good job staying faithful to the style and personalities that got people interested in Peanuts in the first place
Ice Age 5: Cash grab with no redeeming qualities, unlike the others
Ferdinand: I had a hard time with this one, but I think I was just being too critical on it. I see the appeal, it just didn't strike me personally
Spies in Disguise: This existed? I saw this and thought it was a fever dream
Overall, there's been a slow decline in quality, starting with Ice Age 4. Ice Age has been one of the highest grossing animated movie series to date, but it feels like the people involved understand that it's at its end, or should've ended a couple movies ago. Otherwise, there's a few contrived movies on the list, ones that feel like they were made with the intention of bringing in viewers. I honestly really wish Blue Sky had made movies about other endangered species like the platypus, stick bugs, kingfishers, rhinos, etc. It'd give personality to animals that we never really see represented anywhere (where have you seen talking rhinos other than Ice Age 1?) and it would've been a really defining move for their brand, to get kids to support endangered animals from a young age. Heck, they could even partner up with organizations like the IUCN and include them in movies to more factually represent the species while still retaining depth of character, like a movie about a northern white rhino who, unlike in Rio, is actively in search of a mate, and befriending other notable African animals along the way, or even a look at a white rhino in captivity where the rhino thinks it'd be best to escape but the humans think it'd be best to contain it and help it breed, so it'd be like Madagascar but with more of a duality that allows people to consider that while captivity isn't great, it does genuinely help animals in certain cases.
Anyway, that's a longer rant than I expected to go on, but my point is that they had a pretty solid start and kind of declined over the years, both due to their interest in milking the Ice Age franchise and their general lack of consistency. Saberspark made the argument that Dreamworks wasn't consistent, but I disagree. If I'm watching a Dreamworks movie, I know I'm watching a movie that takes a cliche concept (aliens coming to Earth, dragons coexisting with humans, representation of Asian culture through martial arts) and turns it on its head. When I'm watching a Blue Sky movie, I genuinely don't know what to expect, other than that animals are going to be the main focus. Rio can be compared to Kung Fu Panda, but Epic can be compared to Arthur and the Invisibles, and Spies in Disguise feels like an Illumination movie. The movies they produce are all over the place, and I feel like a more compelling series than Ice Age would've kept them as an independent company rather than being acquired by Disney.

It's also because Disney got too big and they can't afford to keep it open. If Disney would have let somebody else by Fox then Blue Sky would have probably lived longer. But Disney is too greedy and they just want to get rid of their competition.
You know this video was made before Disney bought Fox. So that basically completely disapproves your theory. Just another blind hater of Disney who doesn’t know the facts.
I say that because as of April 2021, Disney had shut down Blue Sky Studios. So it felt relevant.
Update: They're getting shut down. RIP Blue Sky Studios.

Pixar: the prodigy student that no one give it a chance until he get friends with the role model student now it's an A+ in everything, and he loose its shit every time he gets an A-
Dreamworks: the average student that has his ups and downs but you know he does his hardest every time he gets an A
Illumination: the lazy cynical asshole that does nothing but c+
Blue sky: the outcast that always tries to stand up but at the end of the day we will always get ignored and will never be popular.

azfadel I imagine Disney as an British well spoken kid, Pixar as a intelligent nerd (kinda like Lisa simpsons), dreamworks the average joe, illumination those sport guys who bully the others for beeing popular (an when I mean popular I mean how much cash they earn at the box office with little budget and uncreative ideas), and blue sky you could argue he could be like the Bart simpsons in Bart gets an F, where even if he is a trouble maker you know he is just a kid that tries his hardest, but when trying hard isn't enough I can only imagine blue sky crying for failure like Bart did at the end of the episode.... and of course ghibli speck for itself (or a guy with a Miyazaki mask like in that "what if anime studious were people" video check it out it's pretty funny)
I identified with blue sky xd
Ghibli really stands out with its unique hand drawn animation and being able to adapt 3d models almost seamlessly
R.I.P Blue Sky Studios. Thank you for all the fun memories. 💙
Its scary how well the roach animation still holds up
It’s better than the one in Cats, that’s for sure
The one good thing about ice age collision course (in my opinion) is Buck, because arguably, he's the best character in the franchise, its like if jack sparrow was a weasel, he's hilarious, i would have honestly preferred a movie on buck rather than collision course.
Zachary DeZ definitely. He’s the reason I enjoyed Dawn of the Dinosaurs so much. Bringing him back was the best idea
@@Air_Serpent sadly the movie was not the best even with him
Yea it was actually really cool to see him return
Buck was the only great thing I love about Dawn of the Dinosaurs. If he wasn't in it, the movie wouldn't be as entertaining. Simon Pegg did a fantastic job as always voicing him. But even his comeback wasn't enough to make me go see Collision Course.
If in doubt, throw Simon Pegg at a role, it'll stick.
The answer is unnecessary sequels to the Ice age franchise and too much mediocre
I wouldn't call it unnecessary. It's just that they didn't know how handle the sequels
jksmasknz honestly it’s better to get new films than relying on Ice age
Three movies for one franchise is usually way too much...
Let alone five.
Yeah, there's enough Ice Age sequels, where's the love for Rio?
Misery Loves Company I know the studio should stop making those movies and rely on new ideas
Animation fans: where’s Blue Sky Studios?
Disney: Gone, reduced to atoms
Fox doesn’t know how to manage and animation studio and would’ve eventually pulled the plug on Blue Sky had Disney not bought them.
Disney hasn’t had to worry about Blue Sky since 2009 when they were starting their third Golden Age and their 2D comeback didn’t make that much. They had Up as their financial success.
Why would they want sabotage something they bought for 44 billion and putting them in debt?
They bought Fox so they can have more content on their streaming service and have additional characters for the MCU. Blue Sky probably have lived a lot longer at Disney had it not been for the pandemic.
The pandemic has taken a toll on Disney’s finances that while they’ve announced a lot of projects and are trying to get film and tv productions going again, they can’t release movies without being confident that it would make money and theaters are not a safe place to go to in a pandemic. Same with theme parks, they have to have lower than average capacity in order to follow the CDC guidelines.
If 2020 hadn’t had a pandemic they probably would’ve gotten similar billion dollar hits as they did in 2019. Black Widow, Onward, Soul, Mulan (though the fact that it was filmed near a concentration camp has me glad it did not become one), and whatever else was supposed to be released.
Their buy out of Fox happened in 2019 and their streaming service was released in November that year. They had paid in billions for Fox’s film and tv library and they could not just sell it back because they would lose more money doing so by having less content, having to lower the price just to sell, and losing characters for their MCU.
Fox was already having financial troubles so they had to sell to Disney anyways. Disney might’ve wanted to keep Blue Sky alive but because of the pandemic and the debt from the Fox purchase they kind of felt the need to sacrifice Blue Sky
The answer is clear- Ice Age Baby
Darn it. I just commented that :(. Ice age baby ruined it.
I appreciate that Disney might help Blue Sky out, but I'm unhappy to discover Disney owns yet another studio. There's only two big studios left to compete with Disney and one of them doesn't make very good movies. I enjoy Illumination's stuff, but I'm not sure if they compete with Disney the same way Dreamworks can. With Blue Sky out of the picture that's just one step closer to Disney having a monopoly on all of movie animation (at least the big stuff anyway). Smaller studios are making some steps into the spotlight, but who knows if they'll make it big. Don't get me wrong, Disney is amazing, but I feel like having some competition is good for them, it makes them want to try harder instead of getting comfortable and feeling like they don't have to put as much effort in. Idk, I just hope things work out in the end.
KohakuAmber22 I think why the princess and the frog didn’t make enough money in the box office is because rio made more money in 2011 than the princess and the frog .
@@zoelindwall637 I recall doing some digging around and its a mix of it being 2D animation when 3D was booming pretty big. So Rio was def a factor, and the fact Tangled came out around the same time didnt help.
There was also some talk about branding. Tangled's original title was actually 'Rapunzel' (they had a few teasers with the Rapunzel title too), but they changed it to appeal to a wider audience so it wasnt simply dubbed 'another princess movie' by viewers.
Changing 'The Princess and the Frog' to 'The Frog Prince' was a suggestion but they apparently never went through with it. So that also hindered it a little too.
There's also a rumor that white audiences felt the movie wasn't "made for them" and even 'American Dad' joked about this idea in the haunted hot tub episode. But this is more of a social rumor than a fact.
tbh I think it can help out because making a movie takes a long time. And each studio can release their movie off a period of time. Having a longer time to make something improves the quality. Kinda like how the COD games do their releases where a studio takes 2 year to make the game and each studio alternate.
Let disney have their monopoly, just pirate everything.
Well, not exactly 2.
There is Dreamworks, a long time rival to Disney
Illumination, a rising rookie in animation
Sony Pictures Animation, a redeeming studio, that seems to treat animation to more of an art form now
Warner Animation Group, a new studio, behind the Lego Movies, but seem to be doing the same formula of owning the rights to property, make it cartoony and have moderate success
And there is the newly founded, Paramount Animation, a replacement to Nickelodeon Movies.
Competition is still strong, and that's not forgetting any new possible threats in animation, such as Skydance, and the several Animated Netflix originals like Klaus.
It was announced today that Blue sky studios will close In april of 2021. RIP

I love Disney and all, but they're one step closer to becoming a dictator to the animation franchise. That's scary
I sense a dark age looming...
Well okay, unlike in the 1970s and 1980s, these studios are semi independent have their own projects they work on.
However, a monopoly is always possible and Disney higher ups may get greedy and try to minimize cost and maximize profit only for short term growth.

18:12 that was a perfect imitation of that sound effect 😅 😅. I agree about Robots a fun and funny film with a unique concept, wish more could have been done with it.
With the Ice Age sequals I've wondered the same thing about why they never brought back the baby, and easy storyline could be that he grew up to be a hunter and is conflicted about hunting the herd that took care of him. Heck it's surprising that no human characters have popped up in any of those sequals lol.

R.I.P blue skies studio, you will be missed 😔
At this point, Disney has lost everything that created it's personality and aethenticness and has officially turned into a massive cash grab. It hurts to say, but it is the truth. Before Moana it was all about creating and entertaining but unfortunately after The princess and the frog Disney had enough of making under $100M on their movies and switched to CGI for you guessed it, money. Call me a heartless monster but I absolutely dispise Moana. Yes I am addicted to that stupid song about the fucking ocean and most people found the movie heartwarming which is fine but for me it just...lacked.
Robots is the best Blue Sky film they ever made, it’s underrated as hell.

What truly ruining Blue Sky? The fact that Disney bought and actively shut it down because “It’s to hard to manage during these tough times.”
Ice Age was fresh and unique when it came out. There weren't that many edgier animated comedies at the time, aside from Shrek. People knew they could depend on it for quick laughs and kept coming back but goddamn, it's been 20 years. Kids grew up, parents moved on, and fart jokes are not very nostalgic. Nowadays it performs poorly bc kids are used to different kinds of humor (illumination) and no longer have an idea who tf these characters are!
I wish Illumination never existed. They're stealing every other animation studio's thunder while making ridiculous amounts of money at the same time
No, Ice Age is definitely worse now.
The first film holds up because the story get darker than most people expect and the characters are great. In that movie the humor was kind of secondary.
Second one wasn't quite as dark but was still a good story and both the old and new characters stayed as solid as ever.
The third one . . . I did not like. At all. It definitely felt like an Ice Age movie, but something was always off.
The fourth one is when things got cartoony. I liked Lewis, I liked Grandma, but the rest of it was mediocre at best. Where the others had been more grounded this one was zany and it took away the feel of an Ice Age movie.
Didn't see the fifth one, but from the clips and commercials I've seen it doesn't look like things got back to being grounded and just got even wackier.
Scrat stood out in the first few because he was the one thing that was cartoony and wacky, in the newest ones he's just like everyone else.
Illumination is cancer and they and their awful movies should be deleted from existence.
@@ThePartyPrimate Despicable Me 1 was alright, and I can't think of anything else they made that wasn't the film equivalent of finding a dog turd in a dark hallway
the first Ice Age movie is still good though and the humor in it holds up
