What's RUINING Illumination Entertainment?

- Illumination is a studio that excels at making financially successful movies. Unfortunately, their movies are also very average with generic stories and predictable characters. Why do they always aim for the lowest common denominator? What exactly is ruining this studio?

@@stinkabutt21 Poor guy? Dr Seuss is a VERY bad person.
MhmIgotthis Smith Err.. ok, thanks...?
@@zorapoo2881 why do you say that?
Dr. Seuss and Illumination is similar to Stephen Hillenberg and Nickelodeon. I will explain why:
Hillenberg hated mini-series’s and all that stuff for his beloved show, and he didn’t like answering questions either like, What happened to Pearl’s mom? Will Spongebob ever get a driving license. etc. etc. but most of all, as I said he hated mini-series. But after he died, the douche bag executives announced that there would be something about a backstory of Spongebob and some camp. It was completely disrespectful, IMO.
So like Dr. Seuss, he hated making things like How did the Grinch become so Grumpy? Where the hell did the Cat in the Hat come from? It’s imagination, people. And you shouldn’t answer questions that shouldn’t be answered. Maybe people should be more original, and stop making billions of adaptations for (for example, Wizard of Oz).
In conclusion, be creative, stop being unoriginal, and spread your mind wide into your imagination. It sounds cheesy, but everyone has their creativity in some way.
I was thinking the same thing

ItzDaredevilCC Their products are too soulless and normie to be memeable. Except minions, since they're so cringy you can't NOT make fun of them. Anything else is just not bad enough
Alen Delon32 Grinch would like a word. Also Lorax. And minions are in four movies... That's six... Sing, SLOP, Hop, didn't... so that's more than half.
Smart Alec I would not count 4 minion films as meme fuel, because minions are the only memeable thing thing there. Plus their memeability comes not from any particular scene or quote, but from their omnipresence and popularity among Facebook moms
Alen Delon32 did yall forget the demon spawn that was the onceler fandom (technically not a meme but hoo boy was it terrible)

Also the Grinch movie has been memed, like, all year. If we aren't counting four similar movies with the same meme as being different, than we should count Despicable Me/Minions as one movie.

That’s your personal experience and opinion and I support that!
I can agree the Lorax was one of their better movies. But when you look back at the production and see what it could have been your kinda left disappointed. It seemed like it could have been a much better movie that would have gracefully tackled themes of consumerism, materialism, environmentalism, and corporate greed.I mean have you heard “Biggering” absolute bop thats arguably a villain song on league with Hellfire, AND THEY CUT IT
The Lorax wasn’t that bad and although it could’ve been much, much better it’s a cute movie with nice character design.
Personally, I especially love the Greed-ler’s (suited Once-ler) design. I love green, suited characters with gloves and glasses, so that’s that.
Megamind is better than Despicable Me. Change my mind.
Not going to try to. I also really like Megamind, especially because of how its true villain is basically an incel on a power trip.
Seriously, what other movies pull that off so well?

Honestly, Illumination just needs to do better narrative and writing in their movies. It's not the fact that they don't want to use allot of money to make their movies, because they don't need to. However, good writing is definitely something that you don't need money to get. We've seen fans make many good fan fiction stories of some our favorite movies, TV shows, etc. If get some perhaps better writers in addition to the ones they have, then perhaps they can have a really great movie.

If despicable me didn’t include minions, it’d be great. The story is actually pretty good, a classic style villain ends up adopting 3 orphans for personal gain who ends up loving them unconditionally and becoming their Dad. The minions were just a side bit of comic relief. I just hate when side characters get their own movie, it rarely works and is rarely ever done with any heart.
It would also be better if the minions in despicable me 1 weren’t comic relief and portray as adorable serious yellow creatures

Illumination is a great example as to why people don't take animation seriously.
Here's the thing, Illumination puts more effort in their marketing than in their own movies, to the point where their animated films become nothing but dumb entertainment for small kids.
Because of that, their movies are some of the most popular animated movies in history.
And due to this insane popularity and quality of their films, it only makes more people think that animation is nothing but stupid entertainment for small kids.
Unicorn Bunny However, the “family” demographic means that you *have* to appeal to the youngest members of the audience, i.e. children. Sometimes this isn’t much of a roadblock. There are plenty of “family” animated movies out there that anyone of any age can enjoy. Illumination takes a different approach and makes their movies pander directly and exclusively to children more often that not. Since children usually don’t have the critical thinking skills of adults, the filmmakers can easily get away with making a subpar film that the parents will enjoy simply because it shuts their kids up for an hour and a half.

@@CrasherX2000 oh no i forgot about dreamworks owning Voltron i'mma cry

Oh god.
I didn't really believe him until I realised I literally have a minion plushie in my room...as I'm watching this...
The cat in the hat movie scared my younger brother so bad when he watched it he refuses to watch it again and has had nightmares about it
saw the Grinch movie online as a cam version, all I can say is the Grinch isn't mean, just basically Squidward in the beginning with your typical orphan without Christmas backstory, and then he ends up redeemed.
Rose Hannah sounds like it was shite
@@leotheskyguy Say what you want about the Jim Carey movie but it was pretty entertaining despite it's flaws.
@@feedthemeat543f I'm talking about the new illumination grinch movie, not that one, that one was actually quite good.
@@MythicalHex Maybe I should have worded my comment a little better sorry.
Even with it's flaws I really love the 2000 movie. It's really one of the only live action adaptations that matches the feel and style of it's sorce material. That and Jim Carey had an absolutely fantastic performance.
The new movie just looks so bland and boring in comparison. It feels more like a cash grab than a genuine attempt to make a decent movie.
@@feedthemeat543f it's like they're trying to take advantage of the christmas season
Honestly the Grinch is probably going to fail because his Smash leak turned out to be fake.
^Big Facts. Should had Up the Release to Halloween (i.e. 1 Day before the Direct) Or if it HAS to Release on a Friday 'cause shitty-ass Kids, Last Friday in October. . .
Disgusting how it made more than Overlord.
I saw the grinch today, it's actually a good movie. It's very heartwarming, and has a good message.
@@emberfish5374 I liked it too.
It was actually pretty good
I never liked illumination animation. Even as a child I found their movies boring.
They're just so lazy and dumb.
Of course, dumb fun is something almost everybody needs and enjoys, me included.
But this is insulting to watch. This isn't dumb fun, not even for kids.
I bet this is how Grinches character design went down
“I mean...how about we keep it mean and stuff like it was?”
“But hold on hold on...if we make him soft and more kid friendly, we can make stuffed animals.”
“Wha- are you kidding me? Isn’t this more about the actual movie and not the merchandise?”
Ya know what? I like the idea of making him a plush let’s do that!”
They should make a gru spinoff for adults called grusome
I love you
That sounds interesting
"Ladies and gentlemen, if you are a child, please leave the theater, because its about to get GRUSOME"
Where he swears, smokes and has a partner called Jump who owns a bar called The Shark
Rated G for Gru.
Damn. I didn't know Illumination bought out DreamWorks... Goodbye DreamWorks, we hardly knew ye.
No universal bought dreamworks it will be like pixar and disney
Comcast bought both DreamWorks and illumination. They simply are both owned by Comcast.
Nick, wrong, Aaron, wrong, Neon, ding ding ding! Third times the charm xD
Illumination better not put their dirty hands all over the prince of Egypt. They will seriously take all of the soul & emotion out of the entire picture! Universal has made some of the greatest live action films I've ever seen. Masterpieces such as To kill a Mockingbird, Rear Window, Psycho, Jaws, Schindler's list, Jurassic Park, E.T, and a lot of the Focus studio movies. However, I can't say the same about their animated department.
One of the many Matts They already ruined it with Joseph: King of Dreams.
I think one of the reason to why Nintendo decided to go for illumination to create a film is that they are cheap when it comes to financial decision.
Another reason is to why is because Illumination focus on characters and storytelling pretty well and has talent like Dreamworks , Disney and Pixar also already has those.
Every bad company needs one of those animation live action hybrid there’s only been one good animated live action hybrid and that’s roger rabbit
2:07 so you're trying to tell me that this is *not* a slightly chubbier vladimir putin?
RIGHT?! I was thinking about that while editing lol
Maybe he's Vladimirs long lost twin brother
His nose isn't as pronounced either
He's Drumpf's contact to the Kremlin xD
what now holy heck
_"The cat in the hat"_ actually scared me when I was a child. I remember that for some reasons, it shocked me.
And in fact, I haven't watched it since the first time, when I was 7 X)
My little siblings loved the movie but for me it gave me nightmares for months
I thought he was pretty creepy too.
Yeah when I first saw Cat in the Hat movie. I was freaked out and had many nightmares because of the hideous CGI.
I distinctly remember playing the weird video game
Baniru, I am twelve and I am HORRIFIED.
Something *really ironic* that happened while they were making the Lorax is when before they decided to go with the song “how bad can I be” they almost had a song called “biggering” in it’s place which was just a straight up rock opera song that stayed a bit more true to the original story and also making the onceler more aware of how his actions were bad. They said they didn’t use that song bc it was “too dark” but really I think it just hit too close to home for them lol. In case anyone’s curious, here’s the link: ruclips.net/video/BpgUQYARIsw/видео.html
Ofc...but yk, this is illumination were talking about...
What I notice about illumination is the character style for every movie, it’s the same. Unlike illumination, Disney and DreamWorks work with different character styles for every movie.
They are cringe asf and they milk every movie that did good by making a thousand sequels of it
Agreed 100%
True
Because its all about selling toys
I don't think Illuminations is'nt a bad movie studio. But at least they tried hard to be original like Despicable Me franchise, Secret Life Of Pets (despite the Toy Story plotline), Sing, etc. But screw the Minions and some Dr. Suess adaptations!
YAS THAT IS TRUE

*can that device really make cupcakes out of ANYTHING*
Yes anything

It's very funny coming back to this after the Mario movie was announced and the trailers came out. It actually looks good. My guess is because Nintendo keeps a close eye on their properties and also keeps quality above all else. They likely make Illumination their tool that their hand utilized. That's why it's looking good. Hope it is good!
Yup, just watched the grinch and you were right. Precious soft boy. A nice character, but not as the grinch.
No wonder Blue Sky Studio and Illumination Entertainment films feel the same, they were founded by the same guy.
Blue Sky is capable of making good movies they just haven't done so recently apparently.
Professor Oak yeah robots was genuinely funny
No chris wedge found bluesky chris meledandri was excutive producer for bluesky
@@wheresmy100ksubsdude5 Oh right, My mistake, still I've always felt that Blue Sky's and Illumination were kinda the same.
Detective Pikachu That’s true but The Peanuts Movie was pretty decent. I liked it more than Inside Out.
Nintendo is apparently strict towards Illumination as Miyamoto seems to be doing most of the commanding, so expect Nintendo Quality rather than Illumination Quality
good.
Nintendo remembers the 80's..... *THAT WILL NOT COME TO PASS A G A I N ! ! ! ! !*
Sweet.

Fun facts: The Lorax have an entire cut songs that literally shows how the entire company runs XD
Despicable Me Started Out As Heartwarming Story Of Gru Being Adoptive Father Of 3 Girls So More Films Remained Sucessful & Mixed Until The Grinch Came Out...

So yeah, this is my small rant-ish thing and I do agree with you

It was actually fairly clever, I'll admit. Much like how the first Hotel Transylvania was an immensely entertaining movie made by Cartoon Network alumni...
