Thanks for the side by side comparison! Most reviewers don't bother outlining some of the more subtle changes between similar models of the same generation, but you've done a great job and gave me the information the last dozen websites I've visited couldn't. Cheers!
Hey Mark, You can enable manual control via menu for Videos which further gives you control over ISO and Shutter Speed only. But not on Aperture. Which means that to set aperture you have to change it before entering live view like in previous Nikons. But you can enable manual control in Menu by which you can change ISO and Shutter speed while recording, But shutter speed doesn't go below certain speed(1/30th) or so. Very helpful review. I have borrowed the 5100 for video and have been disappointed by the stills compared to my d3000, which only did stills. So, I've purchased a used 5200 from eBay based on everything I've read and seen. Thank you for such a thorough review.
Video is my main thing though I do some photography. I use 2 Panasonic HMC-150s for events that require the camera to be on for extended times. I also have 2 D5100s for music videos and personal interviews and training videos where there is ample opportunity to start and stop the camera within the 20 minute limit for video. With the exception of not having audio meters like the 5200, I LOVE THESE DSLRS for photo and video! I work along with guys shooting 60D Canons & my D5100s still shine!
No the AF-D lenses need an integrated AF motor inside the camerabody itself, if that's what you're asking. Otherwise it works just fine, if you don't mind manual focus :)
I agree... I don't think thatnikonguy is implying one should upgrade from the 5100 to the 5200, but rather if you are buying from another series, here are the differences. Unless you have more money you know what to do with, you typically upgrade from one generation to the next, not within the same gen.
Very very useful review. Im going to buy my first DSLR and i'm not into videos. I guess D5100 will do for me and thought of investing in some good lens. Whats your opinion?
Any votes for D5100 vs D3200? 3200 has 24mp, but 5100 has flip screen and more controls. Both seem to have nearly identical sensors and AF. I can get them both for about the same price. Tough call....
Im in the market for a dslr. Im interest in the nikon d5100 or d7000. This would be my first dslr but im not new to photography. Im looking for a dslr that will allow me to be creative and deliver stunning pictures but at the same time i need it to be easy to use since im new to dslr. Which one would be better for me?
Hey Matt great video! I do have a suggestion. When doing high ISO test it would be useful to compare the high ISO's with ISO100. Especially in this video where you see the two side by side having a third column with ISO100 will make it easier to identify changes in the images. I shoot canon and i'm not in the market for a camera but i enjoy watching these videos especially your channels.
Hello, am planning on buying an Slr very soon & am very much confused between Nikon D5200 & Canon 600d, I would be glad if i could get help regarding this coz Nikon got better sensor and AFpoints but canon has built in auto focus motor, which comes really handy even if you buy low price lenses. Is built in auto focus that important? am into street photography so was wondering that i can get 600d in discount and spend the extra money in lenses or i should go for nikon coz i want better imaging?
I have the D5100 and it produces great pictures and video, but the lack of full manual mode in video is annoying. I don't think you can go wrong with either camera since both are pretty amazing.
Nice Video, i got the 5100 and have a bit problem shoting sport with 300 mm, i use manuel to my Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 cause off focus. I like the sensor in 5100 !
Hi Matt, do you know if you could separately adjust the shutter speed, aperture and/or ISO before or whilst taking a video on the D5200? Looking forward to your response. Cheers.
Hey Matt I was just wondering which lenses you use with the d5200 im just beginning photography and have a pretty big budget for good glass and im not sure which lenses to get
I own a Nikon D3100, and must say that the built in focus in the lens does bring the price up, and that is really annoying to me. The bit more expensive Nikon DSLR's also have a built in focus and the lenses for them are cheaper. You should try to compare the price of the camera and 2-3 extra lenses.
Which one should I get? D5100 18-105 VR or D5200 18-55 II, D5200 is about 150bucks more expensive. But what is better, more reach and VR or faster autofocus, faster pictures and better video? (I will be using tripod also)
Yeah, I got d5100, but there was no 35mm lens so I went with 18-105 kit lens, tho I would like to have a fixed lens for better low-light performance, do you recommend 35mm f/1.8 or something else? (I do alot landscape but also just streetphotography.)
Hooray for Sony sensors. I've used the same 24mp sensor on my Sony bodies, the a65 and a77, granted through a translucent mirror. So the low-light performance should be slightly better through the Nikon.
Thanks for your very helpful response, i am looking for a not too expensive second body for video as my D700 only shoots stills as we know. Very well said thumbs up for izntube
Hi Matt, Your videos are great! Do you recommend this camera, the d5200, or the canon 650d? Do you know if one these has better video-quality than the other? :)
First of all nice informative video, However I would like to see photos in different mode with this two cameras place side by side ISO comparision was good but photos with different scene and light settings side-by-side would be great
Hi Matt, now that you have compared the D5200 with its predecessor, how does it fare against, let´s say the Canon T4i (650D). It´d be cool if you could get your hands on the odd Pentax and Panasonic every once in a while as well. Since Pentax marketing is really quite rubbish, people like you might actually help them along a bit. I love all the brands and every brand has its pros and cons and we need em all to keep the streetprices down ;) Thanx a million
I just crashed my D5100 and thanks to the extended warranty, bought the one that covers drops & theft, I just upgraded to the D5200. I noticed yesterday, day 1 of ownership, that i'll have to get used to a new menu screens. I wanted the extra pixels so I have something left of my photos after cropping. I also need the better performance against noise.
D5100 use Sony IMX701 sensor, that's why D5100 have more saturate color compare to D5200 with Nikon sensor. but a DSLR don't need it, which cause unnatural skin tone, but some people very love saturate color. for me i choose D5200 for higher detail and more accurate color reproduction.
Am glad if I helped. :) And If you don't need 60fps in Video then D5100 will be better as one can get nice discounts on it. And if you not going to use same lenses then sony A37 is great for videos with manual controls and auto focuses like a charm .And is cheapest. Cheers :)
You'd think, but the 7D is an old camera and technically the AF system is better. I know, I too would be crushed to see the D5200 beat the 7D because I'm a Canon fanboy too.
If you want better imaging, then Nikon. Canon is actually great but it doesn't have a very detailing quality in picture like Nikon does. And photographer will tell you that auto focus is a bad idea, that you should go in manual for better photograph which that what Nikon does.
I got the d5200 with a 35mm lens and on af mode its totally useless indoors, doesn't have the capability to take even 1 good pic on af mode, am told you have to practically be a photographer to get these cameras to take a decent pic. there over hyped. I like my phone camera much better,

+IVIajorJacobs , I didn't think nor did I want to learn how to use it, I just wanted to put it on af mode and take pics, I have no interest in any way to start messing with all the settings, am just not into it at all, very frustrating to me, not worth the effort.
Thanks for the side by side comparison! Most reviewers don't bother outlining some of the more subtle changes between similar models of the same generation, but you've done a great job and gave me the information the last dozen websites I've visited couldn't. Cheers!
How would you order D90, D5100, D5200? From your first to last pick.
Hey Mark, You can enable manual control via menu for Videos which further gives you control over ISO and Shutter Speed only. But not on Aperture. Cheers

the problem about the video mode in D5200 is there has no manual controls while in video, no 60fps at 1080p (it has 1080i)
can you do a video d5200 vs 650d?
Very very useful review. Im going to buy my first DSLR and i'm not into videos. I guess D5100 will do for me and thought of investing in some good lens. Whats your opinion?
Who would you say the 5200 is geared towards now that is has a decent auto focus system?
hey you know how to get rid of the green in the low light photo shots?
Any votes for D5100 vs D3200? 3200 has 24mp, but 5100 has flip screen and more controls. Both seem to have nearly identical sensors and AF. I can get them both for about the same price. Tough call....
better sensor, resolution and new options?
Looks to me like the comparison shots are a bit skewed. The 5200 is zoomed in more for a closer shot, revealing more detail.
Matt means the D5100 has the same sensor as the D7000.
can you tell me if the video on D5200 still has a 20m limit (for each clip) Thanks
Im in the market for a dslr. Im interest in the nikon d5100 or d7000. This would be my first dslr but im not new to photography. hi, I am a beginner. new to the DSLR photography. Is the D5200 good for a beginner? to learn from scratch.

Nice Video, i got the 5100 and have a bit problem shoting sport with 300 mm, i use manuel to my Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 cause off focus. I like the sensor in 5100 !
I have an issue with my 5200
Why is the Kelvin always 1.4k in AWB how can i change this
Hi Matt, do you know if you could separately adjust the shutter speed, aperture and/or ISO before or whilst taking a video on the D5200? Looking forward to your response. Cheers.

What macro lens and ring flash do you recomend to take intra oral pictures?
what is the name of the cameras you took a picture of to compare

I want the MP (wildlife cropping) but I also want a fast FPS. D400 anyone?
Is 5200 still relevant? Its 2015, and we both have lesser hairs!
I really love my D5200!

not in the same league in my opinion, but it would be interesting to see how they perform against each other.

What was this video shot with?
i have the D5100. no complaints at all with it. great camera. I recommend
5100 better than 3200! it has larger sensor (better image quality), HDR, flip screen, lower ISO noise, longer battery life etc. ... ;)
yes of course, but you can also go for the D3200 and buy a good lens with the same price of a D5200.
Watch camera do you use for your videos here, like this one? :o
Michael Patrick Lee d5300 lol
Does anyone else get nervous when he's swinging those cameras around? lol
D5200 or d7000?
ill just wait for the d5300 coming out next month...
Although the shots are probably zoomed in a bit more on the 5200 shots, I can't say it looks better than the 5100. Hopefully it's just me...
Do you have a slight accent or is it just your voice?
I just crashed my D5100 and thanks to the extended warranty, bought the one that covers drops & theft, I just upgraded to the D5200. He was referring to the D5100 when he made this comment, not the D5200.
Of course SS doesn't go bellow 1/30 or so! How can you have a slower shutter speed than your frame rate!?
Am glad if I helped. :)
And If you don't need 60fps in Video then D5100 will be better as one can get nice discounts on it.
And if you not going to use same lenses then sony A37 is great for videos with manual controls and auto focuses like a charm .And is cheapest.
Cheers :)
i love my 5100 dont see the point in the upgrade. still nice though
Nice comparison. Thanks
It really should have a headphone jack for audio monitoring, how could that not be on Nikons TO-DO list for this camera? Looks good otherwise.
Actually the D5200 is using a sensor from Toshiba not Sony.
hmm.... i see this video has a bit more contrast compared to your other videos.
(just saying) :)
upgrading from a 5100 to 5200 is the wrong way to upgrade anyway. if you'd say upgrade I'd say go for the d7000/d7100
again?
Great Job
You'd think, but the 7D is an old camera and technically the AF system is better.
I know, I too would be crushed to see the D5200 beat the 7D
because I'm a Canon fanboy too.
I have a d5100.. Love it
great share on this
You can get the d5200 on sale now with the lens kit on photocamz.com/camerasale
No worries!
I have d5200 and i love with it great image performance. And one thing you look a like to steve job in the pic with that asian
I like the shutter sound on the d5100 lol
Hard shadows in the video, but great review ;)
thanks.. mattranger
If Nikon would just weather seal the d5200 it would be hands down the best camera for the money. For the love of God please Nikon!
I think you need AF-S.
If you want better imaging, then Nikon. Canon is actually great but it doesn't have a very detailing quality in picture like Nikon does. And photographer will tell you that auto focus is a bad idea, that you should go in manual for better photograph which that what Nikon does.
D5200 Vs. 7D!
If only they announced it earlier -.-
none of the nikon cams are crap..........don't lose ur mind over it!!
"in its day" lol. good review matt :)
WOW!!! Contrastyyyyyy video...
Now i now wat to buy thx 😄
Buy the 5100 and add the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 as well and you will be better off.
D5200 shots are zoomed in more
Nikond? ;)
it will mount... but wont have autofocus...
Zero points for D5100. At 8 minutes.. why not just say "get the d5200", and we are done for only 5 seconds.
I got the d5200 with a 35mm lens and on af mode its totally useless indoors, doesn't have the capability to take even 1 good pic on af mode, am told you have to practically be a photographer to get these cameras to take a decent pic. there over hyped. I like my phone camera much better,

nikon, always nikon, no doubt.
...this is more of a 'first hands-on' kind of video than the in-depth, 'this is every single feature it does and does not have" kind.
canon is good for video but in Picture nikon surpasses canon.
Dynamic range, Color Depth, over all picture quality Nikon wins.
D7000
Nikon Nikon
I couldn't get mine to take even 1 good pic indoors, and I got the 1.8- 35 mm lens, am no photographer so I only use the af mode, its totally useless, incapable of taking good pics and video in af mode, wouldn't buy Nikon for 50% off, didn't realize I had to become a photographer to make this camera take decent indoor pics. very poor quality.
maybe you just dont know how to use it? Its rated good lol if you aren't a moron its not hard, but if yours is defective then scratch what I said.
+IVIajorJacobs , I didn't think nor did I want to learn how to use it, I just wanted to put it on af mode and take pics, I have no interest in any way to start messing with all the settings, am just not into it at all, very frustrating to me, not worth the effort.
You are right @IVIajorJacobs
you in auto focus mode not complete auto mode. that will fix your problem or lack thereof
my heart is broken...i hv d5100 :-D
Great, so I just bought a piece of crap last year. Thanks for ruining my day.
lol
24mp of d5200? eat the dust of 16mp sensor of d5100 in image quality.
lol not even close. 7D by a mile
