clarity and picture quality still stands up today I have just got into photography and got this as a gift from my mom and I am so pleased with how easy it is to use and takes great pictures
im looking to upgrade and this seems good. so how is the quality? shutter speed? I also saw people commenting about the sd card slot being faulty, so can I ask if the camera is actually decent. thank youu
I have been a Nikon user since 1959 when I worked in retail and then bought an F2 it was a long time ago, Seeing your enthusiasm I went to my local dealership and tried it, Doing a lot of Macro I could see it would be great so I bought it. I turned pro in 1977 when I left to work in the Middle East using a Hasselblad but that was film, My advice always carry a camera I have for 57 years and this is a good one I WOULD
I just bought this Nikon D5100 a few days ago and being my first DSLR Camera i am well impressed with the quality of the pics and options that come with it. My cam came with the 18-55mm lens but planning to upgrade to a stronger lens once i get the know how on using the cam.
you are able to manually focus when doing video. Nikon are one of the only camera makers that offer continuous autofocus during video recording if you want it. This is very useful.
Hi All, I bought this camera 2 days ago and I have been shooting constantly it takes absolutely gorgeous pictures and the video quality is really good better than my iphone4 which I was using so I am pleased, the sound is just as good as well. I am a first time dslr user and I went through ken rockwells site to set it up similar to how he does it and I tell you I learnt a thing doing it. I was so close to buying the canon 600d it felt lighter in my hand but it felt a bit cheaper... D5100 is A+++
Great review! If the lens is an AF-S lens it has the motor for autofocusing in it. Even without the motor you can manual focus. The kit lens is AF-S hope this helps.
Great review! I made up my mind to purchase this camera but I have 2 questions for you. Is it worth it for me to get the bundle package from Bestbuy with either the 55-200mm or 55-300mm or just get the lense that comes with it and get an additional "better" lense like the 35mm? Also, have you figured out how to avoid blurry video spots due to the auto-focus feature? Thanks!
For the best image quality while using a zoom you would want a larger sensor to pick up more light to compensate for the zoom. Full frame cameras don't come cheap though, if you can get a wider lens that still allows significant zoom, you might be able to get by.
I'm a bit of a newbie in the field of photography, so I'm doing a lot of research before I buy. What does the motor do and how will lacking it affect my photos? If I buy a lens with a motor, will it be equal to having the motor in the body? Also, if I buy the d5100 WITH the 18-55 lens, will that lens have the motor? Fantastic review, thanks so much.
The 18 55 kit lens has worked well for me. In the bad old days of film, sellers spoke contemptuously of the "kit" or "consumer lens" coming with all cameras. Usually justifiably. It promoted sales of more costly additional lenses. Cynical but it worked. But now Nikon broke with cynical tradition providing a superb lens with all D5100 cameras which if operated inside the parameters that an 18-55 lens is theoretically capable of, gives superb results. Way to go Nikon !
35mm F1.8 was my second sens. I bought i 2 mounths after buing d5100 with 18-55. When I bought the 35mm a just forgot for the 18-55. Now i bought a 18-105 just in case when I need something longer or wider, but the 35mm is almoust all the time on my camera body. It's extremely sharp, great for portraits and has one very good bokeh. Go out ang get it it isn't an expensive lens, but it is great!
Great review, none of the usual BS, I am a Nikon user and I think that you have convinced me that this camera is worth giving it a try. Though I am more into artistic type photography, the size and weight of this camera makes it easier to carry around. Looking forward to more of your videos.
Hi seeing your review made me decide to try the camera and I bought one Having been a Nikon user since my F2 in 59 when I worked in retail and a Hasselblad for commercial work when I turned Pro in 66 I agree fully with your comment it's a fabulous camera. But also buy the best lenses you can afford that really mat
Nice review, thanx for uploading! Which external microphone would you recommend for using the camera on vacation? Any special settings you would be using?
Oh and I ended up buying the D5100 with an upgraded lens the 18-105mm and I am so glad I did I find I use the zoom heaps especially for my childs photos. Teds in Australia has a deal on $909 for D5100 and the 18-105mm lens, the other thing about this lens is it is glass not plastic so that has got to be better!
Nice informative review. I will be buying my first DSLR really soon. Do u suggest I buy body only and lens separately or standard offering of 18-55 mm VR lens is also Ok? Do suggest. Thanks.
@TheEvilMJ the motor is pretty much what the camera uses to autofocus. without it you have to get the lenses with the motor built in them. with camera's with the motor (D7000's have one) you can use some of the older lenses that dont have the motor in them and still will be able to autofocus with them. You can still use the older lenses on the D5100, but they wont autofocus.
@davomrmac but it doesn't stick to that ISO setting when I tried to do so. It just goes and adjust itself to around that ISO setting (like if i set at 250, it might go to 400). Even when I set the max auto-iso. Manual or not, mine goes on auto even when i set it to manual. I usually just lock the exposure when I need to do so. And also, I use the A mode (aperture priority).
ive been looking into dslr for a while now. first i wanted a Sony a55 and then u made a vid for it. a couple of weeks ago i started looking into the NIKON D5100 and yet again you have mad a video for it. are you reading my mind?? lol i love your vieos. Keep it up
Great review and thanks, it's a D5100 for me. However, I having been picking up information that there are problems with using Sandisk Extreme SDHC cards, camera informing that no card recognised or card needs to be inserted or notifications to that effect. So much so that Nikon have now had to make a Firmware update 1.01 to correct this problem. What cards are you using and have you had any problems? Would appreciate other cards you could recommend. Thanking you in advance
I have on of these and have done all sorts of projects with it.. with the 3 lenses I have, its proven to be excellent in taking awesome photography and more than reliable for my video work... with the 50mm prime and the 105mm zoom this camera is great for low budget filmmakers,.. a sturdy , feature rich DSLR
Nikon D3200 has better resolution overall, but it also imply better lenses, with higher capacity in terms of resolution. D3200 has also a better overall high ISO performance (Seen many reviews, and also lets the DX format to function in lower resolution, and that means less noise..). it also has better automatic color profiling and overall better battery.. D5100 has a very good and proved sensor, has the swivel LCd (great for landscape and lots of other things) and is a very overall nice
Wow this sounds like a fantastic camera! I have one question, what were the names of your 2 camera lenses? I would like to buy those lenses also, thank you!
@fagrahanif I would go for the 35mm since it has your DSLR has a crop factor of 1.5 thus making this like a 50mm FX lens. I got one and my pics are quiet amazing. Plus if you want a tighter shot, just take a step forward.
you got exactly the same lenses as I do. Those are amazing lenses, really great quality of the lenses. However, I have been thinking about the D7000, but it's not available in my country now due to issues in Thailand. Would you recommend the D5100 as a substitute? Will it take equally good photos as the D7000?. I mean both of them have quite a few similarities.
I have a question!! I am deciding between the D5100 and the Canon 600D!! I am really worried about the lack of motor in the Nikon! It is turning into a decisive point! Please help me with that!? I would appreciate your opinion! Thank you!!
Hi guys. Need a little imput here: I´m about to buy a camera. I´ve been on the Canon side for few years, and I moving to Nikon, and I´m between 3 optioins: Nikon d5100, Coolpix P7700 and Fuji X10. I know the last two are on another level/range of user, but they are pretty powerfull too (and I know the differences between the three of them). In my country, the three of them are about the same price, so I have to decide (in a future I will surely change this for a D7000). What do you think?
Thanks sheldoncl for that, Gonna have to get one. Ebay has come to mind just being a novice with a dslr cam and the large choices of lenses known me id either end up getting the wrong lens or get caught on there with one that has a lovely scratch on the lens or something.... It's confusing me on know what lens is what right now, Im gonna have to do a lot of research ok learning how to know what lenses are what and what effects they give.
I always loved Canon and have a small canon flogging like camera and was aiming to buy the 700d but could not find any in my price ranger (pre owned from ebay) so I decided on buying this camera. I haven't seen many bad reviews on it so I'm very excited to get it. Is it good with video quality with the 18-55 mm lens as its the only lens I can afford.
If you're going to be serious about getting into photography, go with the 5100. It has better RAW files, 16mp is more than enough. If you're planning to shoot with kit lenses, then you're not going to get max quality from the 3200's sensor anyway. If you're not planning to get heavy into the hobby and just want something to take an occasional picture here and there, go with the 3200.
Hi Markdawson 1982, Thanks for your input, Tho my 18-55mm lens is a very basic lens I must say it has served me well and given me some wonderful pictures. I am however saving my pennies for an upgrade... So many to chose from. 8-)
Very nice review, and while you switched back & forth from Canon to Nikon, and finally settled on Nikon. My question is aimed at "Image Stabilization" and what type this camera has, as opposed to Canon's system of "IS" ?
D5100 is a great camera. The Nikon D5100 brings the high quality 16.2 megapixel sensor, great low-light performance, and full HD video. Click for pricing info : #amzn.to/1fsGSof
d5100 has AF during video, a tad larger sensor and slightly faster burst mode. You can also put any old nikon lens on the d5100 but canons old lenses won't fit on new canon cameras...
@Dilomski even though Nikon cameras don't shoot as well as Canon, Nikon has cooler features like selective coloring and miniature mode. If they fixed the auto-focus sound on the camera it would have better video
I use this camera all the time. It is used for my videos too! (As well as the Gopro hero 4 black) I would definitely recommend this but for anyone who wants a midrange Dslr capable of great things.
Hi, Can you please tell me about the auto lock on this camera more in depth please. I'd really like to know ASAP because we are going on holidays in a couple of weeks so I need to make up my mind on which camera to get, the D3100 or the D5100.

Nice video! So, next week I'm going to London for holidays and I'd like to know where can I buy this camera paying a good price. I know Jessop's and if you know another store, pls let me know. Cheers from Rio de Janeiro.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to give he some advice. I'm into landscape and a bit of wildlife. I have a nikon d5100 and looking to upgrade to a 24mp camera such as the d7100 or 7200 or go full frame and spend a bit more and get the d600 or 610. Or another totally different option would be to keep the d5100 and get some more sharp lens. Any ideas???
I do have question or two....I only got a 18-55mm lens with mine and am wondering if i am able to get a hood for this and where is the best place here in the uk am i able to get good bargains on lenses and other stuff.
Canon EOS Kiss x5 has larger sensor , better quality photos..! any chance of reviewing Canon digital SLRs ? Hope so, thanks of reviewing your Nikon with us.
I don't know what DSLR to go for, I will be using it for videos and photos equally the same, action photos and stuff... what DSLR would you recommend? thankyou
hello do you still recomment this one? my dad has one and is new (he hasnt use it since he bought it) so i may buy it for me but i wonder if still recomendable or there are newer and better ones in the market right now
Is it right that you not can do manual focus while doing video? All the other reviews i saw of the D5100, they say that you not are able to manual focus while doing video
clarity and picture quality still stands up today
I have just got into photography and got this as a gift from my mom and I am so pleased with how easy it is to use and takes great pictures
I agree this is still a great camera. Awesome gift to receive 👍🏻

@junjie325 JPEG is the data captured compressed into an image format. RAW is the raw data uncompressed.
@ItsMrSeb Thanks so much for watching ;)

@Limewan Put it into P, M, Av, or Tv mode and adjust the ISO manually.

You said you use the camera primarily for video and you've said next to nothing about its video specs and performance.
Great review!
If the lens is an AF-S lens it has the motor for autofocusing in it. Even without the motor you can manual focus. The kit lens is AF-S hope this helps.

Beware of ridiculously loud/distorted intro and outro! RIP headphone users and sensitive tweeters...
@fagrahanif I would look at 85mm then, or 50mm if you are really tight on space.

Dave, do you shoot RAW or JPEG? A lot of controversy on the internet and many pros an cons for each. Which one do you use?
Thanks!
Nice review, thanx for uploading! Which external microphone would you recommend for using the camera on vacation? Any special settings you would be using?
@MrJamesBond1986 Thanks for your comment.
@MrTmd747 Depends on the situ, for general walk around holiday JPEG, for a wedding or pro shoot RAW.
@sendai790 Yes, possibly. I have done the 60D and 550D on my channel.
@fagrahanif What do you plan to use it for.

i saw your Canon 60d video, and Nikon D5100 video. Which one do you like more?
@CitiesAndColours Spot on, good explanation of RAW.
@98GuitarTECH Hahnel MK100 and Rode Videomic Pro.

Is this cam good for vedio ? Pls..
Not the best for autofocus during video.

Where is WiFi setting bruh
@fagrahanif I agree with dave the 85mm is better for portraits, but the 50 is also a terrific lens.
Hi,
Can you please tell me about the auto lock on this camera more in depth please. I'd really like to know ASAP because we are going on holidays in a couple of weeks so I need to make up my mind on which camera to get, the D3100 or the D5100.
@ThatAccount100 D5100 due to continuous AF during video.
Is it possible turn off the critical settings superimposed atop the live preview? It is extremly annoying for taking exact pictures where I must see all 4 edges! Thank you!
The menu and the controls are really really good???
Guess you havent seen the Canon EOS600D, yet.
At 5:58/9:33 you started talking about the motors nor being in the body of the camera, that they are in the lens. Can you explain that for me? What does the motor do and how to you know when a camera has motors build into its vs the lens? - thanks
It's in the lens. The sensor plays a role but your going to get better photos for a D7000 with a 50 1.8 then a D700 with a 55--200mm.
Nice video! So, next week I'm going to London for holidays and I'd like to know where can I buy this camera paying a good price. I know Jessop's and if you know another store, pls let me know. Cheers from Rio de Janeiro.
What should I get out of the Canon 600D, Nikon 3200 or the Nikon 5100?
Please reply i need to know soon
@TheKRNG Went back a long time ago.
I just bought this camera. Can you tell me what video settings do you use to get the best video quality and performance?
capacity in terms of resolution overall.. If you could compare prices, the D3200 has a better video also. I'm able to buy in Europe the D3200 and D5100 also (body only) at almost the same prices.. I've owned a D40, D80, D90, D200 and a modified infrared full time K100D (pentax) etc etc.. What I would recomend?.. Please see the swivel LCD and if that is a plus+ characteristic. Is soo, then D5100 hands down, it has a very good set of features and proven also.. If you want better overall feastures
Amazing review!! Thanks so much for sharing this! I'm totally going to buy this camera this week :D
I was wondering if anyone would be able to give he some advice. I'm into landscape and a bit of wildlife. Do you get any problems with setting the auto focus, we have to keep changing it back to centre spot it does not stay on that setting!
Hope so, thanks of reviewing your Nikon with us.
can you make a video, which is better between nikon d3200 and nikon d5100 ? . TQ
@tenzint3 Both about the same, Nikon for its lenses, Canon for its tethering on the Mac. Both produce superb photos & video.
Is it possible to charge the camera's battery through the USB cable while time lapse photos are being taken?
I don't know what DSLR to go for, I will be using it for videos and photos equally the same, action photos and stuff... what DSLR would you recommend? thankyou
@XxHardcorexxGamerxX D5100 barely came out April 5th 2011. Their refresh won't be for a while.

Is the 16-85 really that much better than the 18-105 ? Need some feedback.

@davomrmac, I desperately need your help. Overall, do you prefer Sony SLT a55 or this?
what do you mean that the motor is in the lenses.. what is the difference with it in the body?
They are both evenly matched.
You can manual focus whilst recording video.
Oh mine is still working since 2011, can you give me a list of lens that is compatible for my d5100 nikon
Sorry, I do not have a list, but any Nikon DX lens should be fine.
Fantastic review. Much better than Others I have seen. Thank you for the great review! Purchasing one soon!
Thank you so much Chris, have an excellent day :D
Do you have any clips of video you have shot with the 5100?
I would suggest that you should consider the D3200 coz it is better at video mode.!
Is it right that you not can do manual focus while doing video?
All the other reviews i saw of the D5100, they say that you not are able to manual focus while doing video
