Every day I see so many people posting photos of armpit rashes that they got from deodorants or antiperspirants, and this keeps happening! What is it that they’re putting in these deodorants and these antiperspirants that’s causing these rashes?
So my name is Kasper Kubica; I’m the cofounder of Carpe, which makes sweat-stopping products for all over the body. And I’ve been studying deodorants and the science of sweat for about seven years now. So I’m not a doctor - this is not medical advice - but I study this a lot and I’m excited to talk about it.
In this video, we’re going to cover:
- Intro (00:00)
- Why deodorant rashes are so common (00:30)
- What types of deodorant rashes there are (01:24)
- What most often causes the rashes (02:15)
- What you can do about it (03:53)
Why are Deodorant Rashes so Common?
So it turns out that deodorants and antiperspirants are among the most common cosmetics to cause rashes, to give any sort of irritation or reaction. There’s basically two reasons for this: One is that the skin in your armpits is uniquely sensitive and soft and thin, and the second is that it’s occluded - meaning that whatever you put there kind of gets trapped there by your underarms all day.
So this means that even if you’re using something that wouldn’t give you a reaction on another part of your body that’s maybe more exposed, underarm skin is uniquely predisposed to really suss out any allergies or irritations that you may have to a particular ingredient.
Maybe you’re allergic to eucalyptus oil and you’ve used a eucalyptus shampoo for a while and you’ve never had a reaction; now you use a deodorant with eucalyptus oil and you have a rash. That makes perfect sense, right? Because with the shampoo, you’re washing it off, it’s not sticking around. With the armpit deodorant or antiperspirant, it’s staying there, it’s getting rubbed in, it’s occlusive, and that skin is super sensitive.
So deodorants, regardless of who you are, are very likely to be the product that lets you discover you have some kind of skin allergy.
What Types of Rashes are There?
There are four types of allergic reaction, commonly agreed - this is kind of debated, like, how do you classify allergies. But broadly speaking, you’ve got irritant contact dermatitis and then four types of allergic contact dermatitis. The two that matter are Type I and Type IV.
I used deodorant my entire life no problem now I get rashes from old spice

Ayyy same, honestly I don’t know what to do at this point.
I have two types of deodorants but I think it was the Old spice that gave me it but it was all fine before though so IDK

I’m allergic to soooo many deodorants. My skin is hyper sensitive to a lot of cosmetic products. I need something that is TRULY hypoallergenic but effective. I don’t sweat a lot and I don’t have issues with products working for me, it’s just always causing reactions !
I never got rashes from deodorant but a lot of people I know have. So I looked this up. My deodorant's listed ingredients in order are dipropylene glycol, water, propylene glycol, sodium sterate, fragrance, poloxamine 1307, PPG-3 myristyl ether, tetrasodium edta, and blue 1. Two of these were mentioned in the video and I guess I am lucky enough to not get a reaction to them because I do like the smell of my deodorant so much.😊
I ordered you guy's hand lotion for sweaty hands and that stuff is good thanks for the info
I learned so much thanks
thank you for this video it helped a lot
Been using talcum powder all this years. Few months ago, I tried using Arm & Hammer Antiperspirant, unscented, stick type to prevent severe perspiration. I developed a rash after using it only for less than a month. Armpit became itchy and dry. Living in a hot tropical country even worsen it. My derma said I developed tinea cruris on my armpit. It has been almost a month of treatment , getting better now.
This is amazing. Honestly though I was in trouble until I realised it’s juts a cream bottle of spray.
So, I’ve used Native Deodorant for a year or more now. I started out using the Coconut scent, and then the Grapefruit Bergamot scent. I decided I liked that scent the best. I kept using it, and I was fine. Recently, I tried out one of their limited edition scents, Peach Cupcake, and yet again I was fine. Then I switched back to the Grapefruit Bergamot scent. A day or two later I got a rash, but under only one of my arms. Very strange. Thinking back, I’m wondering if it’s because I neglected to get the sensitive formula. Either way, it’s weird it only showed up under one arm after having used that scent multiple times before. 🤷🏻♀️ I found this clip very insightful and educational.
Crazy i use the same brand, native cucumber n lime i think changed to sandlewood got the rash under my left armpit, think im going back to the cucumber one.
Did you ever use aluminium deodorant in your life and got any rash?
oh my god the SAME thing happened to me too but with the ocean & timber & sea salt & cedar scent
I feel like a lot of these things you actually develop a sensitivity to.
And yeah, one arm might have been better hydrated and moisturized that day

I’ve been using Native deodorant for a while, and I recently got a new one which I think has been causing a rash. The funny part is that I’m using the Native sensitive skin deodorant, and it’s the only one that’s ever caused irritation for me. I’ve even used a regular Native deodorant of the same scent and it didn’t bother me. I can’t see any ingredients in the sensitive skin deodorant that aren’t in the regular ones, so I have no clue why it’s irritating.
Thank you so much love you
with my experience, its the gel type deo's that give me rashes. Specifically from old spice. The ones that are green or blue and translucent. From the video, seems it might be the 'dipropyelene glycol'. Not sure, but the guy is right woith sayin jus try a new brand, the ones that are powdery like degree or old spice fiiji have always been my best bet, usually nevre leaves a rash.
Better than a doctor, Doctors never know much in my experience. Thank you.
There's different types of doctors. If it's not their specialty then they won't know...
So how do I treat this and what deodorant should I use??
I normally use Old Spice Pure Sport (gel form) deodorant and it’s been fine for years. My GF bought me Axe Black to use for times I stay over (goes on white which I’ve never liked) and now after two uses I have a painful rash under both arms.
It doesn’t help the constant friction there makes it stay a constant dull pain and sometimes more sharp. How long will this take to heal?
I’ve never had an armpit rash before until now and I’m almost 36.
I've had rash and skin allergy with Nivea deodorant spray. It started small until the affected area grew to half of my both armpits. It's itchy and painful so I've stopped using it and used costicosteroids cream to treat the rash and itchines. Now I'm better after a week of treatment.

I recently started using Native deodorant; it started with the lilac one which was fine. Then I switched to the gummy bear scent and that’s when the rash started. They ran out of the lilac that I used and now I regret it. I’m so itchy.
I used a gucci deodorant about 6 years ,left me with burns under my armpits ,ever since when i go out in realy hot weather ie sunbathing abroad i end up itchy red armpits

I am sweaty af but not stinky
Still people judge me based on wet spots on my shirt
Same dude, it freaking sucks
How do you get rid of the rash once you get it?
I can literally only use Gillette clear gel that pushes through.
It's no nonsense.
I can't even use stuff marketed as for sensitive skin.
Mind Blown! If you could recommend a product.
I mean I’d recommend our underarm antiperspirant in the fragrance free version of course 😄 (you can find it on our website). But if you want to try other brands, I’d recommend avoiding fragrance if possible, and/or testing products on a small patch of skin for a few days to see whether they’ll irritate you, before you start using them fully
Ive gotten the eucalyptus carpe and I was surprised to find out it actually worked to stop my sweat, but after the 2nd time using it my armpits were BURNING. It stings like crazy every time I apply it now I wish there was a fix to this because Im glad it actually stops my sweat
Good to hear that you're getting strong results! The stinging may be a sensitivity to the alcohol and eucalyptus oil in the formula. If you haven't yet, can you reach out to our customer service team and ask them to send you our Fragrance Free formula as a replacement? They should send it to you for free (if you have any challenges with that, comment here and I'll personally get involved). The Fragrance Free formula removes just about anything that could irritate some people, and if you see good results with that, you can try another fragranced formula - at that point, you'll know that if any stinging presents, it's being caused by that specific fragrance oil, as that's the only difference between the Fragrance Free and the scented formulas (the original Eucalyptus formula is different from the fragrance free / scented formulas in a number of ways, not just the fragrance oil).

Would you please tell me what I can do to relieve the chemical burn caused by Lume deodorant? What topical ointment can I apply?
I used hydrocortisone 1% cream and it goes away in 2-3 days
I used a mushroom deodorant from Each and Every and it burned my underarms on worse than the other. I didn’t catch it in time. It was really bad. I had to use black soap to heal it and put shea butter under my arms.
So, I have experiencing a while from just regular deodorant. I broke out in a rash. Nothing worked over the counter. I made a doctor visit , I been to two but this final general med doctor prescribed me medicine. It's topical and steroid n put me on a fungus medicine for every 24hrs. It is better and clearing up. So I had to find a solution for not wearing deodorant. I found two from researching. I still use cream . I use benzoyl peroxide , it's for acne but I use that to keep down odor. It's works as well gychol acid use it too. Which ever works for u. I hope that helps. I didn't mention prescription because I'm not a doctor or licensed to give out that info but please go to Dr and get a prescription. OTC works for some but it didn't work for me.

I used Mitchum eucalyptus and the coconut deodorant made the area dry and sting after a few weeks.
Just switched to an all natural deodorant from my standard chemical antiperspirant.
Massive itchy lumps.
Never happened before.

Yes it's because of heat mostly, If your over weight it could actually be worst cause it's always heated under the arms. Very difficult.
About 8 years ago I had gotten a really really bad chemical burn from a Old Spice deodorant, I had to go to the doctor and everything, it sucked and when in my house I couldn’t wear a shirt for about a week and a half and while at work I had to wear bandages, so painful.
So sorry about that I'm going through the same thing now I still use deodorant but I have to be careful on putting it on. I stop using Old Spice deodorant cause I have sensitive skin which I hate. I been using hydrocortisone anti itch cream. My right under arm is sore as hell. It's hard wash up under that arm and it burns when I use the cream but I hope it will work for me.

I’ve been using native deodorant, I’m using a new scent recently and seemed fine but last week I developed an itchy burning feeling in my left armpit.
There’s no visible rash, is it normal to have itchy armpit with no visible rash in one armpit?
This happens to me when i change my deodorant and a week after it burns and itches then another week later i ended up with some lymph nodes i didnt have any rash none so ever

So how do i stay smelling good if i cant use deodorant
I tried baby powder lately, it`s not the best antiperspirant but it`s gentle for the sensitive skin! Than I tried Arm & Hammer perfume free and the itch came back after 2-3 days... The best is to not use anything. Think about it, we are blocking our body`s natural sweating with something that is not suppose to be there, no wonder we have reactions.
Indeed. Currently i search for something more natural. I bought an old spice deodorant like a week ago and now my armpit is red asf…imagine that the temperature putside ia like 37 degrees and that sweat combined with oldspice drips and makes the rash much much bigger
I just tried carpe and it gave me the most painful rash and blisters and bumps in my armpits never in my life have I had that happen to me guess I can’t use it and I had ordered three different ones

You may have an allergy. Give your armpits a few days to heal, then try applying every other day to see if that helps prevent irritation.
@@MyCarpe yeah doctors also told me your allergy don’t use deodorant
I have an armpit rash actually and it was little, then I went to school and came back home and it was more sensetive so I check the mirror and it was larger than before.
Have you been using an antiperspirant or deodorant? It would absolutely be worth trying a different product for some time! Like I mention at 2:02 in the video, sometimes an allergic reaction on the skin takes a couple of days to really manifest, so if that's what this rash is, it could grow for a day or two and then take a day or two to go away, even after you stop using whatever may have caused it.

I started developing a rash but i never used any deodorant and I have just started using dove+ men. I believe Axe was the culprit cause of the massive amount of perfume it has.
I got a rash from my deodorant because I was and still am allergic to the brand.
More so, the brand is Dove.
And for some reason, I’m allergic to many of their products that I’ve tried.
The main ones that clicked it for my family and I were/are:
Body soap
Conditioner
Shampoo
Hand soap
Deodorant
That’s not including how many different types there are for each one ;-;
OMG happens to me as well. The dove deodorant burns my skin, their shampoo/hair conditioner gives me dandruffs and any kind of soap product dries my skin to the point of seeing it breaking off. I haven't tried their "sensitive" line but I am not motivated to try it anyway, after the experience with any of their products.
i think i might be allergic, because when i used the dove deodorant wherever i put it, it got really itchy and sometimes red. it wasn’t just my armpits it was my skin :(
Why are they releasing these products if people are having these reactions
List of deodorants not to use...,
Degree, axe, dove, arm & hammer, old spice, speed stick, right guard, power stick, bruit.
Had to switch to dove. Oldspice got me
See i stopped using normal deo. Didnt like not using nothing due to oder, started on a natural deo and my underarms are burning and pimply
What if I been using a product some time and now it gives a rash ?
This can happen too - while allergies take from a couple seconds to a couple days to show up once you're allergic to something, you can BECOME allergic to something over much longer timescales. So you may be using a product for quite a while, and after a few months or even years, you may begin to develop an allergy to it. It's definitely frustrating, and for the reasons mentioned in the video, the armpits are a common place to notice a new allergy due to how sensitive they are.
Wow, I actually just had the same experience! Kind of fascinating, and frustrating too.
