Honestly I love watching these types of videos from you guys, where you just geek out over obscure older stuff. It's cool to watch as a 19 year old to get a sense of what the car enthusiast scene was like before I came into this world
My roommate and good buddy passed away in his 86 jetta when we were 18. This brought back some memories in his car. Glad he got to take it with him. RIP Phil
This is all the content I loved before they became a huge TV channel owned by a multi company owning conglomerate that needs views to make ad rev. It turned into a stand alone business and not a side job to market a clothing/lifestyle brand
15 years ago, my dad restored one. Lowered on BBS's, intake, exhaust en freshly painted. Sadly an uninsured moped drove into it, after someone put diesel in it after a test drive. Such an awesome car, I wish I can buy one the in the future
As someone with a Jetta: Aero headlights are where it's at lol. Rallye and Westy front ends are good too. Really need to start working on my MK2 again sometime, been too busy doing MK3 things for like 3 years to touch it.
I was more of a scirocco guy, I had 8 of them, and didn’t get my first GTI until my MK7. But I rode in and worked on ton of these MK2’s and love this content! So glad there is an actual vw nerd with Y’all!
FINALLY! 😁Thank you so much for finally seeing some MKII content here! This one really is a time machine! I could talk hours about MKIIs. Simply best car ever... ❤️❤️❤️❤️
i had a Digifant MKii i bought for 500 bucks in early 2000s. first thing i did was lower it, put on the plastic flares and go to the junkyard to find 4 cookie cutters. what a great little car and that 1.8 is magical. i raced an scca MKii Golf with the 8 valve CIS, great great cars! i wish i could find one in the country i am currently in but they did not sell them here.
The first car I bought with my own money was a 92 GTI, had the quad rounds and everything. This brought back a lot of memories and was awesome seeing you guys geek out over it.
I had a 88 Golf in high school. Same headlights, big doors, 5-speed. It wasn’t a GTi though but it was still fun and good on gas. Being in mid Illinois I never saw another one. Seeing this has me kinda missing it.
As the owner of an alpine white UK registered 1990 (big bumper) 1.8 Jetta GL (on a weber carb) with a stock blue material interior, original cassette player and not so clean engine bay I was definitely here to the end 👀👌🏻
YES!! My first car was an alpine white big door small bumper 89.5 GTI I loved that thing so much. VR swapped it, quaife, willwoods etc... wrecked and had 11 more of them in a row. MK2's are by far my favorite car. I gotta sell a project and pick up another... The gauge cluster was so good to look at....
helped my brother buy his dream vw a while back after his low mile mk5 gti got stolen. Came home with a beautiful super clean and stock 1987 gti 16v in terra cotta 'pearl effect' got it for a good deal drove it 500 miles in the first 24 hrs of owner ship. Now hes an absolute nut for em hes now got 3 interiors for it, mk1 snow flakes and a perfect set of mk2 teardrops with all the centers, and just picked up a quad grille to do a swap, I love that we got him that car because its just been nothing but fun tinkering with it and fixing shiz, rebuilt the shifter, new master cylinder, etc. etc. vw is definitely the peoples car
My brother is currently letting his 89 rot away in the driveway, in the late 90's we did everything you talked about like gti interior w/Recaro's, big bumpers and quad light grill ... I also built the engine in that car with very good parts for the day
I had one and drove it hard and loved how it handled; even entered it in slaloms. It was a great car in its day. I kept it for 15 years and didn't have any body rust. I sold it to a friend. I miss the feel of the ground through the steering wheel and cable throttle.
i had an '87 Golf and loved it. so good in snow. my brother was driving back home at 4am from partying all night. He fell asleep and went off the road, sliding on someone's yard toward their house. He came to and swerved the car so it lightly scraped the side of the house. Of course the car was totaled. As it sat at the mechanic, someone stole the radio. Back in those days they were stealing radios left and right.
I didn't click off the video, not because I'm a VAG nerd but because I can appreciate a super clean car, especially an 80's VW because you don't see them anymore. They've all rusted away or been turned into these crazy VR6 powered, all wheel drive converted death machines or something along those lines. I'd love to own something as immaculate as this GTI.
I've had 2 GLIs with big doors and small bumpers. The best MkII look imo. If I was going to do something to that time capsule, I'd G60 swap it so it's still an 8v.
Despite the fact it's red, I love that car. I've been addicted to VW's all my life. I have a Montana Green 1992 GTI (also have the Matchbox car just like it) that's been dead in my garage since 2010 but I refuse to let it go. I have 5 times the money in my car than it's "worth". Have Recaro seats from a 2001 Jetta GLI, which STILL look like new.
My first car in 02 was a 85 gti that had gli Recaros and single rounds, lowered on a H&R cut kit. Loved it. I swapped 1.8 16v in it and then traded it for a 2L 16v GLI.
I totally respect all of this. No matter the variation, if you appreciate at this level - that's care and enjoyment of something you find awesome - and thats special. Especially sharing it with friends.
Ahhh, the memories!!! Favorite car I ever owned was when in college and had an 87 MKII GTI 16V. Midnight Blue Metal Flake with the teardrop alloys. Quick, practical, fun, solid unit. Never tired of pushing that car to its limits. I would probably still have it to this day had I warned my little bro of its tendency toward lift-off snap oversteer prior to him wrapping it around a telephone pole 😳. Rest In Pieces Blue Bomber 💙 brother was shaken, but ultimately OK.
92 Gti in Black with 30K miles, painted Lambo Grigio Telesto Gray, a bit of shaving 5 cyl swap with upgraded turbo + AWD swap is my baby. Always back and forth with the headlights though. Either single rounds or euro projectors lightly smoked of course
Wow, what a great car, i couldn't believe my eyes seeing such a clean survivor, seriously this car is amazing, i grew up wrenching on these, specially the 16v models, mid 90s it were the hot years for mk1 16v swaps. Pure nostalgia. Thank you for this great video
I bet they would love that grill in europe. I did notice how easy it was when he first opened the door, funny to hear you mention it later. I have a '91 T-red 4-door. Hopped up on diesel. On the having to lift the rabbit door: You can hold a 1/2" socket in the lower hinge and close the door on it. Believe me it will feel like you are torturing your rabbit so you won't be able to close it far, you'll hear some mild creaking and you will stop so it probably won't move it up far enough the first time. Just enough to pry that lower hinge back out a little. That lower hinge gets shoved in slightly (enough to drop the rear of the door about 1/4") and needs pulled back out. Might have to try twice. Don't lean on your doors people, ha.
I appreciate bringing up the bumper size and door size, missed the trim size though. I have a bit of a bastard child… 1988 Jetta, Westmoreland built, Digi car, small bumper, big door, big/fat trim. Love seeing VWs on the channel, keep it coming.
I watched it all because my first car was an 80 rabbit and my 2nd was an 84 jetta. the most unique thing about the jetta was no side view mirror just a factory plate covering the spot for an optional mirror. nice to see a clean car. I destroyed the jetta with two M&M 18" subs in a 9 cu ft box.
Ok it looks pretty good on the out side and it still has original rims.... but that interior tho. God dang. It's so clean and original. Did not know that the US got the Jetta grill and lights. I remember that every one pulled the 4 round lights and grill of and changed them to square lights. I guess that grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
I used to own a 1980 VW Jetta , would love to have it back , it was in great shape for the year, rust free all original, showroom condition interior, that was 20 years ago when I left that car when I moved to a new province.
I owned a 1988 VW Golf GTI 16v also red and also with the square headlights back in the 90s. I wanted the dual rounds as well but couldn't afford them. Thanks Scotto for doing this video I wish I still had my 16v hahaha
Where I grew up this is an MK 2 , June 1976 the Golf GTI Mk1, priced at 13,850 German marks, was launched in Germany before going on to enjoy global success. The initial plan was to manufacture 5,000 units of this special product line to at least recoup the cost of development and the investment in production equipment.
the 80s and 90s are like my favorite era of VW and Audi, that's the era when they weren't playing 2nd fiddle to other brands, when having a VW meant you could flex on Honda bois, when having an Audi meant you could flex on BMW bois, I didn't grow up in that era but having driven cars from back then and learned about them from weird old guys at car shows makes me want to own one.
Had that same year and color gti 25 years ago paid all the money i had saved 2600 bucks so many good memories love those cars, someone has really taken care of that one hell of a find!
period correct it needs a Kenwood 3 way wedge box in the back and a "1000W" Thump amp. my family shared an 87 Jetta Diesel. very much the same doors and bumpers. odometer stopped working at 570000 but it drove for a few years after. it was a 70mpg all day driver for maybe 7 years of abuse. Countryfest 1997 big 4x4 were stuck and Jetta paddled thru

i bought a mk2 gti cab when i was 14 in the uk with the goal of fixing it up for when i passed my test . im 33 now never passed my test due to health reasons stopping me from ever driving and my dream car rotted away behind my dads shed until it was just a pile of rusty metal . the worst feeling in the world is being a car guy but never being able to drive a car its like a huge part of my life was taken from me before i had a chance to even embrace it . i see my brother doing 1.8t audi a3 engine swaps and buying 2001 s4 B5s and blasting up and down the M6 i never got passed the 50cc moped stage . if anyone wants to know i have migralepsy or migraine induced seizures and if i get a slightly high blood pressure i can have a fit so im banned from driving or passing any sort of test just incase i have a fit and crash into someone or somthing i have them atleast 3 times a year and can happen at any moment it fucking sucks
🇳🇴 In norway,in the 90's early 2000 it was popular to put on those square jetta lights on golf, and also the ones from the corrado. And shave the the hatch,or weld in the Volkswagen logo from the tailgate of the golf mk1 pickup/caddy.
shoutout to this legendary example of the #farfegnugen era. first car i bought before I even had a license was an '87 GTI plagued with CIS issues. what a car it was; spent most of its time parked...
I have a 99 golf that I daily and that car is unbelievably loyal it’s in amazing shape especially for a car that has 200,000 km on it and has never let me down and it’s wicked fun to drive and you can trust my judgement I have an Evo1 and a blown Mustang Fox
Beautiful car. In EU they kept selling the small bumpers after the facelift, big bumpers where higher trim. People like the look of the early doors, but the position of the mirrors makes them all but useless. I love my late (92), small bumper car because of it
As a VW nerd I greatly appreciate seeing Scotto nerd out on old VWs and Audis.
Seeing and hearing properly working CIS/K-Jet really makes me happy

In Belgium it was knowed as the "getaway car" in the 80's. It was fast enough to get away from the cops and a lot of criminals used it.

i bought a mk2 gti cab when i was 14 in the uk with the goal of fixing it up for when i passed my test . im 33 now never passed my test due to health reasons stopping me from ever driving and my dream car rotted away behind my dads shed until it was just a pile of rusty metal . the worst feeling in the world is being a car guy but never being able to drive a car its like a huge part of my life was taken from me before i had a chance to even embrace it . i see my brother doing 1.8t audi a3 engine swaps and buying 2001 s4 B5s and blasting up and down the M6 i never got passed the 50cc moped stage . if anyone wants to know i have migralepsy or migraine induced seizures and if i get a slightly high blood pressure i can have a fit so im banned from driving or passing any sort of test just incase i have a fit and crash into someone or somthing i have them atleast 3 times a year and can happen at any moment it fucking sucks
Loving these new series!
Beautiful car. In EU they kept selling the small bumpers after the facelift, big bumpers where higher trim. People like the look of the early doors, but the position of the mirrors makes them all but useless. I love my late (92), small bumper car because of it
Gorgeous car! Excellent pick up!
My first vw was a 96 gti, loved it!
