Dad had one in Manchester. Loved it. Best car ever. He got it valeted then some bastard robbed it and used it as a get away car in Whalley Range. Got burned out but he still has the badge found on the floor. Every cloud....
My GTI 16v was a barnfind and has been still for TWELVE years! When I got it, it was starting like nothing happened to it. Sure, I didnt drive with it like that, I quickly changed oil and other stuff, but the sick part was that it WORKED. I really want to keep my 16v forever, its a very fun car.
Loving the enthusiasm . When I was getting into motors (80s) these were just "cars" ....not classic cars. So happy to see there is still such a following for old VDubs that were designed for a 10 year n100k life. Couldn't tell you how many Beetles I scrapped in the 1980s. Dailying a W123 currently as ...the only sensors in the car are my four paws and the checks of my arse , the "brain" is in my head and ........I can still fix them without a computer or a parts cannon . Love your work guys.
Awesome cars 😀👌 My brother bought a new silver Golf 2 GTI 16V in the late 80's. I wish he kept it but he always only kept a car 2 or 3 years. I have a silver '03 Golf 4 GTI 1.8T and love it.
I had a Kjet 8v, great car and loved it to bits. Bilstein B4's and progressive eibach springs made it a joy to drive too. Then I replaced it with a 205 GTi (1.9).....different league altogether. Better to drive, smoother engine, more practical (sensible boot aperture and flat floor) and just more fun all round.
If you live in a cold place. And cold starts are a problem. Please look into the South African VW ECU and wiring known as MP9( Bosch) it's tunable perfect for cold starts and is balance between fuel efficiency and performance. Most in South Africa move to Mp9 ..so if your Kjet is giving you problems we switch to MP9
48 mpg is really good for a mk2. My J-reg 8v I had from new as a company car averaged 42mpg on a motorway run. 16vs are much worse... expect about 35 at best!
I have always wanted one of these bad boys and turns out I am actually getting one though I have a funny feeling it’s going to be a weird first car and for where I live in Co Down is there anything I should be worried about?
I dont agree, but a tdi (pd or 1z) swapped mk2 is brilliant daily. All jokihg aside ye cant beat a gti.i have 4 of them here in donegal. Nice car good to see it back on the road 👌
my mum had a 89 on F plate new no central locking, no power windows, no sunroof on the plus side it had an auto reverse Panasonic radio and trip computer . Even by 89 standards was low in kit an XR3i had power locks windows and a sunroof. My mums 86 Cavalier SRI was way quicker felt better quality less tinny but the Golf GTI has classic appeal an SRI does not.
That comes with VW tax and the drive is at the wrong end I know a lot of you young uns grew up with FWD and 4 bangers, but really, go buy a CLK55 and do the 6 speed manual gearbox swap and see if you want to go back to a fwd hatchback.

Good stuff.. you're right, the fear of it being stolen is the only thing that bothers me from time to time.

Funny we have heard the 205 to be a better driver’s car - would love to try one sometime. Think the Mk2 is a better long term to live with tho!

We’re Digifant so thankfully we’ll never have to worry, but a handy tip for anyone looking through the comments! :)
Never broke down in a MK2 .but getting one to start 😭😂
The test drive unlimited music is 👌
I used too buy and sell mk2s in the 90s, £3,000-£3,500 for a G reg, now their £9,000 to £10,000, ouch
I was lucky my US spec 2.0 GTI 16v fuel regulator squirting gas out.. it was just the little bring seal. Cannot find replacement part!
No air con is the killer soon as it warms up. Rest in okay with lol
Here in Ireland we never have to worry 🥶😂
Temp sender need looking at Tomo, your temp LED is flashing away merrily! Good watch, thank you! Amazed at 48mpg, I’m sure mine is nowhere near this!
Yup it’s not wired in. Never trusted it in this car hence the stack gauge! Need to just bypass it altogether on the dash coz it’s annoying

I want a classic allrounder, was considering the W124 actually 🤣
Honestly, a 124 or a Mk2 Golf. You cannot beat it!
I have a mk7 gti but i want one of these so bad 😂
Do it, you won’t regret it!

Nothing weird about it, that very one was our first car!

Haha, we have two AHU Mk2s and a soon to be 1.6D Mk2 Van as well. We love them no matter the engine 😂
Golf = perfect daily driver - groundbreaking news...
Does that classic insurance policy come with an annual mileage restriction for the mk2?
MKII 4LIFE
Hey what is that digital gauge that reads "12.5" at 8:04 in the video?
It’s a volt meter! 🤙🏻

Mustn’t have been a GTI with no sunroof then?
It was defo a GTI I could be wrong on the no sunroof my mum had it less than a year
Gran Tursimo background music?
You bet! 🙌🏻
Yo G! Where did you get that gorgeous cushion from at 7:57?
It’s been so long that I actually don’t remember. I got it 11 years ago 🙈 Sorry I’m not of more help.
@@427Motorsports No bother buddy, thanks for the reply. I'll keep my eye out for one 👁️
The eagle is a take on the Reichsadler, Hitler used it to represent the Nazi party. Unfortunate pillow, unless he’s into it 🤷🏻♀️

Did you watch the video at all, where we literally mention about rear wheel drive, no?
The best I’m getting from my mk7 gti on open motorways is literally no more than 33.5mpg🤣
Damn, our 7.5 GTI regularly sees 40+ 😂
"Nobody wants a mk3" spoken like a true mk2 snob. Great video all the same
