I don't know why I bother wasting my time watching any other photo-tech channel, you keep us in the loop lightning fast and mix geek with humor at every turn. Thank you! I may snag one of these when they hit the market, I'm liking the features so far. Thanks Kai!
I absolutely dislike Theoria the Angry Photographer. Aside from taking credit for other photographers creative works by allowing viewers to "think" he took them. He spends way too much time slamming and hating on other photographers. I've never watched a more insecure photographer on RUclips than Theoria Apophasis, he says some good stuff, but it's mixed with his cesspool outlook on others which is just uncalled for. He's a hater and who needs that.
Hi Jay John, yes, I watch several channels including the Angry Photographer. They all have something to share and I check in to see what's going on. I do particularly enjoy Kai though. Thanks for the recommendation. I also agree somewhat with Nikon Professional on the insecurity that comes through with Theoria. He calls himself the "Angry Photographer" and that's somewhat offputting, but I still manage to get some good info from his channel.
Oh Theoria went further then that, side lining into trying to find and explain alternative energy, perpetual motion mechanics etc (the tin foil hat kind, not the "this is actually perhaps feasible kind) I had enjoyed watching his channel for a while sporadically as I found the time, and often found a gem or two to enjoy, so in the end I subscribed, and was then hit by multiple vids of him talking absolute nonsense about how he had realized things that all the scientists of the world had missed and he had the answers, or at least experiments that could lead to the answers...very sad. I unsubscribed and haven't been back since. As for Kai here...always entertaining, and informative. I'll still be watching Kai for a long time to come.
I'm a Canon user. This Nikon presentation is probably the best I've seen; it caters to various photographic disciplines to demonstrate the capability of the camera. I hardly see that from other brands.
Using my D800 for years to come, but as a Nikon person this makes me happy. Basically everything about this camera is amazing apart from the fact that they removed the pop-up flash. I used the pop-up on my D800 all the time for CLS (triggering other flashes in a small studio environment or even outdoors sometimes). Also the fact that it ACTUALLY has a silent mode this generation does away with one of the biggest advantages mirroless cameras had. There aren't that many situations where it's needed, but now it can be done just like with mirrorless. Check/mate.
Never heard of saving? You had 3 years to save and if you save $10 a day. By cutting out the traditional junk starbucks, fast food, over drinking, that is $10,950.
Kyle Medina Thanks for the smart reply, but I had other things to buy that were more important first, like lenses and studio flashes. Now the camera is next on the list.
AcidTripwire that wasn't directed to you but subject those prices from $10k what a couple thousand? I'm sure you had enough left for this camera while still over indulging in something else.
Kai must be a huge celebrity at these events. "Oh look it's the lead wildlife photographer for National Geographic. What's his name? OH MY GOD LOOK IT'S KAI MAN WONG!!!!"
Of course, in fact Kodak still makes ISO 6 film as well. Look up Kodak 2366 or Kodak 5324. I've personally shot 2366 and that bright bright yellow film base is so neat when you're loading it into your camera.
Forget about the typo. I would love to know how the heck he changed the ISO 3 times so quickly that the bird did not move. And he kept the same composure, tripod could’ve been used but I never saw one.
I just came across your channel about 2 hours ago ever since I have not stop watching ! you inspired me to keep pushing my channel thank you keep it up
I like this because it could push Canon to start innovating once again. You see, Nikon held almost nothing back with the D850 even though it's not a flagship. It's a much better value than the D5. But Canon slices and dices its market. It holds back with some cameras to protect the cameras above it. If Canon was making the D850, they'd probably do like 4 fps or something like that to protect the flagship. This is a great camera by Nikon and at the same time it could push Canon to not hold back as much and start innovating again.
As someone who shoots a D5, this one does actually seem like a better all around camera. Granted, we are looking at a few different beasts. The D5 is meant to be a speed demon for sports and news. The D850 is the camera that is meant to be the top-tier amateur and for pros doing portrait, wildlife and landscape work. The D5 has a higher frame rate and an insane buffer. I think what this camera does is make the D500 pointless. I know a lot of people were looking at that in wildlife and high school sports because of the frame rate and focusing. But, what's the point when you can get a full frame body that does even more for just $1000 more?
Just wish it had a log file for 4k recording with 422 10 bit or even 12 bit raw. Im asking for much but its still a win with the 45 megapixel full frame 4k. Which is crazy! Hopefully Nikon has an update for more video features. Also yes I know its a photography camera but it can totally be a video camera as well. Also does anyone know what the dynamic range is?
Invested Canon shooter here and man do I want the D850. Blows away the 5DIV in pretty much every aspect. If Canon don't do something exciting soon I'm fucking them off. I really hope Canon blow us away with a mirrorless full frame or see ya.
I learned photography with a Canon Powershot sx500 and used 5d3 at work. But 2 months ago I bought 5D mark 4 as my first DSLR camera to use for freelance projects and right now I feel bad because the price is same and this one is definitely a lot better. Can you guys say something that will make me feel any better? I know equipment doesn't matter but why canon? why?
You can still produce amazing pictures with the 5d MK4 and it is still a good camera on its own. Skintone colors are still much more pleasing on Canon without much editing. Even though the Nikon has more MP count, most of the time you will not notice the difference until you start pixel peeping. Does you and your clients view pictures at 100% or 2:1? No they don't, so it doesn't really matter. Just focus on your craft as a photographer because there are tons of pros that shot with 5ds that make exceptional work. If you really want, then return the 5d and get a Nikon 850.
I'm in same boat as you. I dropped over $3K for a copy of 5dm4 about same time you did. I invested so much in Canon and feel cheated. I will pick up a D850 and slowly move to Nikon. Like what Nikon is giving us for the same amount of dollars.
@phigonggoi They give us camera with terrible ergonomics that requires highly overpriced lenses to be usable. Video work possible only after modifications. Nothing new from what they've been doing for last 10 years.
I am a 5dmk3 user... Seems like the table has turned around and there is no point buying the 5dmk4 or 6dmk2 but for the af Shame on you CANON!! Nikon and Sony will be the king and queen of full frame cameras for the next few years.
Tried to be first guy to comment on your video. And also love what you do kai. Love your creative outlets. I am a game dev. Your reviews helped me with making a lot of right decisions in the past. Thanks to you I purchased the 5D classic. Love it. It would be great if you could bring back those "why you need a 50" or "how to do X on a budget" type videos.
I have gone from Nikon to Sony....but man....Nikon cameras are built like tanks. I've had my D5200 for over 3 years now and I cannot believe it is still fully fuctional without ANY defects and it's been though some narly shit. I still use D5200 for weddings as a B camera and the video out of the camera looks great even in 2017. Honestly, might not be the best camera in terms of specs, but is DEFINITELY the most reliable in terms of durability and functionality.
Nikon has interntionally decresed quality over last few years. Look at the piece of crap D750 and compare with an actual camera built like tank like D90 or so. Canon is way more reliable at this point.
As a Colorado boy I have to say that I was surprised to see Kai wearing a Carhartt hat which is a brand I haven't seen too much outside of mountain territory. Then I saw the "Starter" logo (@ 4:45) on the back and laughed at the thought of the factory that successfully combined the two brands. Good stuff! Thanks for the videos Kai. They are always entertaining, even in the most subtle ways.
Kari I'm so glad you back and still have that sense of humor.... So you find the D850 impressive huh?!! Do more review on that model and tell us more with excitement.
Being an animal "Action/Speed" photographer,,, I was shocked at the BUFFER - or,, lack thereof !.. I use a D4s & D4, & LOVE them.. The D850 looks wonderful,,, for ME,,, especially due to my health issues,,, but I'm terribly disappointed in that buffer... I can live with 9 fps,, but NOT at the sake of a big buffer... Maybe it was just Kai's settings ? Maybe set to fullsize RAW ?? If anyone can enlighten me,, it would be VERY much appreciated -:)
Linus Esch You're right, slight oversight on my part. I have the d750, will keep it for a few more years. As for a great startup for vlogging, nothing beats the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II.
Hopefully the next thing from Nikon will be a sub $1000 mirrorless that takes all F-mount glass to completely murder Sony's consumer camera market share.
Nikon dropped the ball on this announcement. They had the nerve to have a press conference and invite professional photographers instead of RUclipsrs. SMH.
The GH5 i known to be a bit lacking in low light, and I'm guessing he was a one man band that day. Auto settings makes that kinda stuff worse. My guess, have a nice day.
Joshua Zedalis At full res, it only does 11 fps, and the mechanical shutter-you know the one that syncs with strobes-is a joke. Then there's that awesome shutter lag and the fact it's only a 24mp sensor, which is a huge step in the opposite direction from their own a99II! Sports camera they said?! Laughable!
Yes it does. I really like the look of Canon glass - which I mount on a Sony A7R-2. But watch what Sony is producing now. Canon, like its doing with its bodies, is busy resting on its laurels.
Hi how are you? I am wanting to upgrade my camera a Nikon D5300 to a full frame Nikon D850. The thing I need to know is if I can still use my Sigma DC 17-50mm F2.8 EX HSM & my other lens Sigma 70-200 mm F2.8 APO DG HSM. please advice. Many thanks
finally nikon is playing its hand.. besides a pop up flash and a flip out screen.. they have made the perfect camera it seems.. i wonder if it has the 29.59 min limit on video mode
Just want to point out the 9fps with the battery grip will set you back another grand. Because you need the battery from the D5 in the grip, and you will need the D5 charger if you don't already own a D5. In all is about 950$ before taxes USD.
Hi Kai! Could you do a video about budget cameras? It doesn't necessarily have to be about DSLRs. I am a street photographer and I am looking for a small camera. Your recommendations will help me alot. Thanks!
Great. Now I'm itchy to save up for Nikon.. my first dslr was Nikon d5000 and my first full frame was 5d mark ii. 😢 I like both. Canon is so friendly when it comes to costumer service (my personal experience) I switched to canon because at that time (2012) mark ii was on sale while the Nikon full frame I wanted was too expensive for me 😔 I've already invested lenses for canon and that's one fat reason why I can't switch back to Nikon 😩 but man this one is so tempting! I wonder if this one has auto focus when it comes to the video?
Love the guys show how great the tilt screen is , look i can put it up high and down low to take the picture . Yeah Nikon , we had seen it for years with Sony now .
I don't know why I bother wasting my time watching any other photo-tech channel, you keep us in the loop lightning fast and mix geek with humor at every turn. Thank you! I may snag one of these when they hit the market, I'm liking the features so far. Thanks Kai!
did u try "theoria apophasis" channel ? very informative, not just infotainment.

Wow, that's all interesting Sudonic, he may have problems that none of us really know about, how unfortunate.
I'm a Canon user. This Nikon presentation is probably the best I've seen; it caters to various photographic disciplines to demonstrate the capability of the camera. I hardly see that from other brands.
400k Subscribers! Congratulations, Kai, you've come a long way.
Aidan Ussing Press 800k now
I'm a Canon guy, but respect where respect is due. Have fun with this one my Nikon friends!

5:57 Did you say it has focus peaking?
Crew One Photography Can someone confirm this?
Yep that's correct!
Finally a Nikon camera which is going to be good for both video and manual focusing.
Focus peaking in video at FHD only. No focus peaking for stills or 4K video.
FHD and stills, but not 4K.
Oh look, another camera I can't afford! Fantastic.
Snapped Rabbit I'm a proud member of the 'still desperately saving for a 5D mark III' squad
I'd take anything that shoots in really good quality. xD
Never heard of saving? You had 3 years to save and if you save $10 a day. By cutting out the traditional junk starbucks, fast food, over drinking, that is $10,950.

I just love the way you present.Informative and hilarious without trying overly hard. Definitely one of my favourite channels on RUclips!
Kai must be a huge celebrity at these events.
"Oh look it's the lead wildlife photographer for National Geographic. What's his name? OH MY GOD LOOK IT'S KAI MAN WONG!!!!"
some of the other photogs were obviously fangirling
If the Sony A9 is the best mirrorless full frame camera in 2017 then the Nikon D850 would undoubtedly be the best full frame DSLR in 2017.
As far as I'm aware, the A9 is the only full frame mirrorless camera of 2017.
Not much competition in 2017...
mcrazza
And maybe the next A7iii will be the best Full Frame Compact Pro Camera.
Peter Smyth
A9 is The Camera of The Year.
Not the only full frame mirrorless,
The list are : Sony A7, A7ii, A7R, A7Rii, A9
mcrazza yes sir!!!!
4:30 ISO6? Holy shit Kai!
i think its a typo and supposed to say 64
I think it's 6400 - it's demonstrating noise at higher ISOs: 6400, 12800, 25600
ISO 6 is possible though, there is a company called Kono Dunau that makes a ISO 6 35mm film.
Of course, in fact Kodak still makes ISO 6 film as well. Look up Kodak 2366 or Kodak 5324. I've personally shot 2366 and that bright bright yellow film base is so neat when you're loading it into your camera.

Love my D750, but so want one of these.
OMG, this makes me so happy about the future of Nikon. Staying in the brand.

iso 6 ???
Top job Kai, everyone else seems to be just talking paper specs: but here you are, actually using it.
Kai! I love you.

Canon has great glass. There you go....
They hold their resale value well. :)
You can still produce amazing pictures with the 5d MK4 and it is still a good camera on its own. Skintone colors are still much more pleasing on Canon without much editing.

So the past 18 months or so, we got D850 and D500 from Nikon, A7R iii and A9 from Sony, aaaaaaaaaaaand 5D mkiV and 6D mkii from Canon...
My A7RII and Canon 5DIV rolled into one beast of a camera. Shut up and take my money.
I have D700 fx 12 MP since 2008 and had also Canon but no way to compare ! Nikon always produce impressive FX Models.
Full frame 4K?! Never seen that before!! ;]
ARXV Photo - Umm, 4k has been available on the Nikon D5 for well over a year now.
it's a dig at the pathetic 1.74x crop of the Canon 5D Mark IV's 4K video
yeah but its 20megapixels.... poop for those of us who crop ones in a while
Trey Quattro The people in this comment section get denser by the hour!
Hasn't Sony A series been doing this for years now?
kai I don't know if you like it but could you do review of new tamron 18-400 lens for canon
I am a 5dmk3 user... Seems like the table has turned around and there is no point buying the 5dmk4 or 6dmk2 but for the af
Shame on you CANON!! Nikon and Sony will be the king and queen of full frame cameras for the next few years.
kaoru kaoru I agree. There won't be another upgrade for 3 years unless there is a full frame mirrorless. Omg
People buy the 6D to enter the full frame circle cheaper, the 6DmkII has not enough advantages compared to the depreciated 6D
George Damis some insiders are talking about a FX Nikon mirrorless being released around Christmas or Q1 2018
@JTGphotos Will they include some usable on sensor AF or not?

And the D5200 is an entry level camera... The D850 will be of a much higher build quality. Sonys don't come close.
In terms of build quality, I agree. A fellow Nokia 3000 companion
Nikon has interntionally decresed quality over last few years. Look at the piece of crap D750 and compare with an actual camera built like tank like D90 or so. Canon is way more reliable at this point.
i had my d90 for 9years. and still kicking. never been repaired or opened and the shutter count is in 450,000
true
As a Colorado boy I have to say that I was surprised to see Kai wearing a Carhartt hat which is a brand I haven't seen too much outside of mountain territory. Then I saw the "Starter" logo (@ 4:45) on the back and laughed at the thought of the factory that successfully combined the two brands. Good stuff! Thanks for the videos Kai. They are always entertaining, even in the most subtle ways.
hahaha the videographer with the Canon lens in the beginning!
Kari I'm so glad you back and still have that sense of humor....
So you find the D850 impressive huh?!!
Do more review on that model and tell us more with excitement.
Is that camera a cake?
Already pre-ordered mine! Thank you for the great review.
Still can't focus worth a damn when doing video. As shown during the 1080 120Fps.
Alexander Zgura hahaha. so true.
Kai can you please help me out in selecting between Canon m3 can Canon 200d my main focus is on fast autofocus.....
Just found that it does 30fps in jpeg 8 bit - AWESOME :)
SSK9s the buffer is 51 frames and that's really good when you think of file sizes around 80MB.
51 Frames Raw!
bashful228 - WHOOEE,, that's absolutely amazing....
Thanking you so much for the info xx
Travel with Jo - I'm just blown away,,, thank you xx
Awesome job Kai, and fun! That Sony sensor rocks!
"the shlong", lol
Man this dude gets a hold of new stuff pretty damn quickly
The D810 was already better than anything Canon has on the market. This just shoved it further up their arse.
Nice vid Kai...(as usual :-) ) but the quality and noise.... did you guys shoot it on an old gopro?
and id only have to sell a kidney and a half!
cody wright you can sell a testicle for 18k nowadays
Wait, really?
For what it packs, it's really not a bad price at all.
3300$ USD Body only
Pretty cool. Can they do all of that w/o a mirror?
Why no mention of the limited "up and down" screen?! Lack of a flip around screen makes it less then ideal for vlogging!
Joseph Lee I think you don't want to vlog with the d850. It seems a bit heavy.
HDMI out, not a vlogging camera at this price.
Linus Esch You're right, slight oversight on my part. I have the d750, will keep it for a few more years. As for a great startup for vlogging, nothing beats the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II.
So why did all those youtube "revievers" shittalk 5D IV for not having flip screen? :D :D
Do you know how fast the electronic shutter is? Will it have a rolling shutter effect for fast moving subjects?
Hopefully the next thing from Nikon will be a sub $1000 mirrorless that takes all F-mount glass to completely murder Sony's consumer camera market share.
here on nikon Event there are filming with canon camera ??????
Nikon dropped the ball on this announcement. They had the nerve to have a press conference and invite professional photographers instead of RUclipsrs. SMH.
Kai, can you do a video about monopods? I'm looking to buy one but I don't know what I should look for and get. /:
wtf, why is this video so noisy (high iso?)
sim quesion
chingqh because of youtube's crappy compression, their compression format tries to use older frames with the new ones which makes it noisy
The GH5 i known to be a bit lacking in low light, and I'm guessing he was a one man band that day. Auto settings makes that kinda stuff worse.
My guess, have a nice day.
bad indoor lighting is my guess
Kai's not that good at photography, if you watch some of the samples from DigitalRev you'd notice how horrible the photo quality he takes.
best preview on internet
Better than 5D iv
And that iso 6
nice video, please review Lumix G85 Kai
That girl is just fantASStic...
krokodil196 Which minute?
Brah I was thinking the same thing. Can we start mentioning whose in the vidz from now on? I know she does stunt work for sure.
Best part of the video
What a phenomenal camera.
45mp at 9fps,,,, holy cow.
I guess the buffer depth is 51 for RAW,,,,, nearly double that of my old ID IV.
Congrats on the D850 scoop, way to go Kai!
"Kaiman Wong Influencer"
Good review Kai. Now would you say it is the best all around dslr out right now? If not, what is?
The a9 does 20 FPS continuous shooting. And Sony has had 4K full frame since the a7sii
20fps only compressed raw. uncompressed its 12fps
MikedieONE Well, that 3 frames could be the difference between a good shot and a great shot.
Joshua Zedalis amateur. Real men shoot single frame
a7sii is not a DSLR
Joshua Zedalis At full res, it only does 11 fps, and the mechanical shutter-you know the one that syncs with strobes-is a joke. Then there's that awesome shutter lag and the fact it's only a 24mp sensor, which is a huge step in the opposite direction from their own a99II! Sports camera they said?! Laughable!
Nice one. Will that in ANYWAY affect prices of second hand other / older models like D610 etc ?
Fly to Canada and have a long chat with Peter McKinnon. he'll school you on DSLRs
Would you recommend the D850 over the Sony A9 ? A video compare would be awesome
I'm about 3000 short :(
Kai, Thank you for your video mate! Awesome as usual!!
At least canon has its glass going for it.
Trail Features L GLASS ALL THE WAY
L glass is overrated lmao
Trail Features I also like shit colour saturation
Sigma Octantis FIGHT. ME.
Yes it does. I really like the look of Canon glass - which I mount on a Sony A7R-2. But watch what Sony is producing now. Canon, like its doing with its bodies, is busy resting on its laurels.
any love to auto tracking/focus while recording video?
first
How much is a shutter to replace once this reaches its end. ?
This makes the 6Dmk2 look like Donald's Trump's wig in a bin.
is there any filter to fit nikon glass on canon or vice versa..
guess what.... #CANON is doomed !
maybe Canon is planning to leave the DSLR market for more few years
Nguyên Toét exactly
Mark Stronge but canon cant do 4k @ reasonable format
@rajdeep pal Nobody cares about 4K besides youtube vloggers.
Many thanks
BUY FILM NOT MEGAPIXELS.
Would Canon Rebel t6 be a good beginners camera
finally nikon is playing its hand.. besides a pop up flash and a flip out screen.. they have made the perfect camera it seems.. i wonder if it has the 29.59 min limit on video mode
I need some help. Can't decide. Canon 750D (T6i) or Nikon D530
Great review, looks like a serious camera and a great upgrade for the D810. Laughed at the car mechanic comments!
Just want to point out the 9fps with the battery grip will set you back another grand. Because you need the battery from the D5 in the grip, and you will need the D5 charger if you don't already own a D5. In all is about 950$ before taxes USD.
So would you pick this over the Canon 5D Mark 4
How does it compare to the a9 AF and a7rII image quality? IBIS helps for handheld shots. Looks like they beat sony to the a7rIII
400K Subscribers!! well done Kai... 🎉
Kai you nailed this. Congrats 🎉
Fantastic as usual and love the product placement
U r sense of humor is off the roof...
Hell yeah, good job Nikon!!! I am a canon guy myself, but i still adore when someone is showing teeth at the rising Sony ff empire. Keep it up Nikon!
Great first look and HANDS ON of this beast Kai. Alot better than some dude with a limited wardrobe and a sheet of paper.
Nikon really wowed me with this, if I didn't have all these Canon lenses that adapt so nicely to Sony I'd almost be tempted to buy one.
Hi Kai! Could you do a video about budget cameras? It doesn't necessarily have to be about DSLRs. I am a street photographer and I am looking for a small camera. Your recommendations will help me alot. Thanks!
Ricoh GR for every budget...
Great review Kai... as always! Thx
So canon is making semi pro video cameras only from now on, or are they going to hit back anytime?
Wild Kai, awesome video almost a full review here! Thing isn't even out
The Car featured is actually a Fiat Dino Spider with Ferrari badges, there is a Fiat Dino Coupe as well and a Ferrari 246 and 206 Dino.
Nice move Nikon and nice review. Xmas presents to self sorted, but can I wait that long?
Which lenses even give you this resolution? The Otus maybe?
Love the guys show how great the tilt screen is , look i can put it up high and down low to take the picture . Yeah Nikon , we had seen it for years with Sony now .
