      People forget that the most important technical skill is using your body to achieve the intended goal. He or, for example, Semmy Schilt were masters of this. Their goal is not to achieve the purity of a technique created for others, but pure effectiveness.

    Hey man I'm from South Africa and this is one of our biggest local tournaments called submission kings. This was a special tournament based on quintet style. The biggest and basically best grapplers take part in these submission kings comps all year round, this was a basic quintet with the added rule of heel hooks being allowed here. Dricus is an absolute monster solely based on the fact that he went against some of the best our country can offer in terms of bjj and mma. Don't be unhappy that he's adapted his BJJ for speed over style. MMA, he has to be prepared to get back on his feet and strike and kick. He can't spend 10 minutes playing handsy. What hurts, to the point that they tap, fast. Just about efficiency, and MMA means you are vulnerable to strikes and elbows the whole time, so spending time in transitions getting that perfect, technical hold... oh, look, you lost. He has a very good understanding of what matters and what doesn't.

    • @bane3991
      @bane3991 6 месяцев назад +3

      Yes, his physical attributes work very well. But the issue is, you can't teach this. It's largely genetic. Sure, you can lift weights and do strength and conditioning but you're at the mercy of your own genetics. So that's why technique is heavily focused on.

    i haven't watched the full video yet, busy commenting while in fight 1, so not sure if you talk about it later. But on the size matter: it's a team competition, and the total team weights are matched. I can't recall the exact weight, but it's likely 400kgs. So you can have one massive sumo wrestler weighing 400kgs on your team, or 5, weighing 80kgs.
    each time a guy wins, he stays in for the next fight, that's why dricus stayed in for the full duration.
    It's strategic how you work out the weight, I don't know what's best, but you can put the biggest guy in first, and end up in a situation as this, or leave your biggest / best guy for last, like the boss in super mario 😀

    Every one of those guys would have been a white belt after one elbow from Dricus. Training to pull guard in any combat situation is not practical, and should be avoided at all costs. I understand this is a sport with rules, which is why it is so important to not practice bad habits.
    Top position... Top position... Top position... if you're not there, then everything should be focused on sweeps and scrambles to achieve top position. Can somebody point to the submissions that people are securing from the bottom in high level MMA?
    I love AJJ, and all aspects of training are geared towards self defense. I'm always trying to maintain top position. I'm a regular scrub in Jiu-Jitsu, but with good striking and a wrestling base I will smoke most black belts in the reals.
    I enjoyed your analysis btw. 14:50 is almost the Roger Gracie bread and butter closed guard pass... it's highly effective and you will love it... no flower sweep either.

    Hes a physical specimen. I understand why hes giving up some position so he can get triangled. Its because if theyre attacking you, they leave themselves vulnerable to get passed. I used this technique all the time. You have to time it correctly. Its like Roy Jones Jr. Leaving his hands low. Sure, hes not blocking with his hands up but it comes with benefits. Your opponent isnt used to it. You can land from angles youre not familiar with. You give the incentive to throw punches since your hands are down which leaves you vulnerable to counters. But you need go head movement and reaction times.
    His squeeze is unbelievable so he can hit submissions in spots you wouldnt expect. It plays to his advantage because hes strong enough to do that and youre weak in those positions because youre not taking them into account and youre not used to it.

    The reason why what he is doing is working even though on paper it shouldn't is because he is doing all the effective explosive stuff your BJJ coach protects you from. You know anytime anyone does anything athletic or painful or "spazzy" and the coach wants you to feel good about the technique so he tells everyone to stop doing it because it is too effective. So then you get deluded into thinking you will win in an actual self defense situation. This is exactly what is happening to these guys here. Dricus is used to MMA, where no coach is there to protect you from someone picking you up and spiking you onto your head.

    Technique is only good so far as it's effective so to say that dricus isn't good because he's not "pretty" techniques that "dont require strength," is just fundamentally flawed. Dricus has conditioned and molded his body a specific way for a specific purpose and utilizes the fundamentals in conjunction with that to battle how he wants to battle. Cutting out the bs and focusing on the effectiveness of your technique is high level practice. You don't fault a heavyweight for not doing sweep singles, fireman's, and ankle picks. It doesn't make then low or high level based on whether they know how/do them either. Know as much as you want, but at the end of the day, it's about whether it works and if they know why it works.
