    Thanks for the info. Did not realize I had a chip and pick up in the surround. I replace my fob and battery and car would not start. . Went in the bin and got out my old keys and found the chip you spoke of. Then refitted the chip into my new fob. Works great. Thanks for the explanation. What would we do without youtube. 😊😊

    All I can say that on my old Vauxhall SRI Corsa, I broke the key and didn't have the money to replace /reprogramme the ECU/key. I had a normal key cut and taped the old broken key to the side of the ignition barrel under the plastic cover similar to what you did and it worked perfectly. Maybe it only works on some cars but it is easy to try. You never know your luck in a raffle. LOL.

    Great idea bro, the same thing happened to my Nissan Patrol, when I bought it, the owner gave me only 1 last key with transponder on it, I bought an SBB Key programmer, but I failed since the OBD2 on the vehicle does not recognize the cable on the key programmer, so at the end, I did the same thing as you did BUT I PUT THE TRANSPONDER CHIP DIRECTLY INSIDE the steering wheel, so it's clean outside, and I bought a STEERING-WHEEL LOCK for additional safety.

    Dude, you ROCK!!! Replaced my ignition on a 2000 Camry XLE (just stopped reading my key out of know where). After having to drill it out because I couldn't get the key to turn to accessory mode I was in awe that the car wouldn't turn over after finally getting the replacement ignition in. I overlooked an important aspect-the security system. Quickly became aware of the security chip but overriding that was dreadful as most of the videos on you tube showed programing etc. that were requiring more time and equipment purchases. the "KEY" (hows that for a pun) was making sure it was aligned perfectly against the Transponder Bezel (antenna). I left the Transponder Bezel and taped on chip inside the housing vs. on the ignition, you'd never know the difference, looks great and works like a charm every time. I'll probably explore placing the chips from my old keys into the new ignition keys in the future but for now, I'm running and that was the objective. So a big THANK YOU!!! I see a lot of mixed comments in this post but bottom line, your video was a major savior to me, it works and it saves some expensive costs--which is the point after all! For all the negatives out there, just keep in mind, he was very clear that this was a quick fix, obviously there are other solutions, but my perspective is, give a little credit where credit is deserved--Thanks again for taking the time to post!

    +PriorToImpact, I know a lot of people are complaining about the vid for various reasons, but i wanted to say thanks! BF & I have a Civic & an F-250 Super Duty. Got the truck out of necessity to tow our boat. Of course, we prefer the 36/44 mpg for daily commutes rather than 12 mpg we avg w/the truck, so we both drive the Civic a lot. Unfortunately, 1 of the Civic keys got worn out. Options were share 1 key or shell out $ for a copy. We made a $2 non-chipped copy & could use it most of the time while holding the old nonworking chipped key nearby. Your vid showed me how to line it up just right w/the other key so that it works every time! Taping the chip to the ignition is a clever idea too, but I don't think we'll do that. Just carrying the non-chipped copy & worn out original together works fine in our situation, now that we line it up right.

    This works. For me it's a tiny glass capsule. I perfectly understand how it works, however I thought that the range will be a little bit bigger, I just thought I could put the chip somewhere behind the steering column cover (I converted to button engine start). But that thing is so well made, not only does it have to be exactly on the right spot on that ring but I also tried taking the ring off, as it has a 2-pin connector & cable, I thought I will just take out the lock, put that ring somewhere hidden and that would be it, but it turns out the ring has to be on the lock and the lock actually turned to engine start position for the chip to work. I suppose it has something to do with the metal on the lock acting as a metallic core for the coil (the ring should be a coil of sorts), because the engine doesn't start with the ring hanging out, even with the capsule mounted in the correct spot on it.

  • @MrBrutuss100
    @MrBrutuss100 7 лет назад +16

    You can pop off the black plastic flange (what you call the antenna is actually just a molding... the receiver is a metal ring around the tumbler assembly INSIDE the column). You can mount the chip inside the housing by removing the molding, mount the chip, and put the molding back on... you're welcome!

      @@HEALInformatics It would take disassembly to put it inside and make it totally invisible. The actual transponder chips are actually pretty small, it would be easier remove it from the key and locate it closely enough as shown, so it could respond when queried by the system. Black silicone to encapsulate it would probably be enough to hide it.

    Neat trick that actually might help my remote starter issue on my Subaru..I recently purchased a used Subaru that had a remote starter installed but I didn't have the remote..I ordered a new remote and it would turn the car on but it wouldn't start..well I checked all the wiring out and it looked good..after a couple hours of internet research I discovered that Subarus require an "immobilizer Bypass system with extra key" installed with any aftermarket remote starter system which is nothing more than a little black box containing a key that has the immobilizer antenna built into it..well of course my car doesn't have that black box installed but I do have a spare key..so then I find out when a key is in the ignition I can remote start the car..boom I have an immobilzer issue..now either I keep a key in my ignition all winter..(I live in the boonies so not really a problem ..but then again I work in the city so nope) I can buy the bypass kit somewhere..or maybe I'll try this out...

I did not want to remove the chip from my key in case it wasn’t my chip..so I inserted the copy with NO chip inside- while placing my whole key (with chip) on the outer part to see where it would best read - which ended up being on the left lower part.

    .
    Bought 02 PT new that had only two 'chipped' keys that came with it. Additional keys at the time were $80... Ef that!
    Removed bottom steering column cover and after ensuring it was possible to attach ONE of the chipped keys to the lock mechanism close nuff to ensure it kept the securtiy mode always 'activated' such that ANY properly ground regular key would engage and turn the lock and ignition switch I was able to have as many extra keys as I wanted for the regular price of ~$1.50. In this case was able to attach the chipped key securely with a couple zip ties.
    This accomplishes a couple things other than as many cheap keys as one wants. First you can hide a key as is customary for when ya lock um in by mistake or forget where ya put it last or jes plain lost it w/o a chance ah losing a $80 key [ yeah I know they's gotten way cheaper, but that's what they was ]. Second, a non-chipped key will open the door locks, at least until they started with all the latest greatest 'who the hey wants um' fancy smancy keys what ya ain't got to even take outta ya pocket, which is one good reason why this po ol boy ain't likely ta be buying no new cars anytime soon as they's gone jes a tad TOO FAR with all this Bravo Sierra crapola what causes wayyyy more trouble than it's worth. And if for some reason the 'fixed' key gets displaced since the proximity is REAL close, and you got to re-adjust it, or for whatever reason got to have it, say it's the only one ya got available, all ya need if ya got access to the inside is a Phillips screwdriver and bingo, ya got the original chipped key back in hand.
    That was over 13 years ago and so far ain't never had to fool with it. Wife keeps up with the second chipped key since she NEVER loses anything, and we got a handful of $1.50 regular keys for daily use, spares, etc.
    Obviously it's a good idea to do this before ya get down to jes one chipped key, but if ya find yer self in that position it'll still work... and save all the expense and hassle of getting a 'new' working chipped one.
    Jes a suggestion...

    Good job. If you decide to re-do the video, show the taking out of the chip as well as tell what type tape you used to secure it. In addition, Also as you try finding the exact position for the newly secured chip on the key well, you should try cranking the vehicle in the different positions until it starts, especially since all positions on the well won't work. But this is very good information that could save a lot of money. Goodbye dealership prices.

    Those RFI's do break so the down side is you might break it while taking it out. If you are at least parked near the dealer or a capable locksmith and that happens and your have unprogrammed spare key/fobs then you can have it towed or pushed in and pay to have them program the ones that still have the RFI chips. I ordered two spares for my car and while I find this trick interesting I will probably go ahead and pay to have them programmed, or order the VCDS cable and program them myself.

    Transponder keys are very very cheap now on eBay. And they do work cuz I have purchased quite a few of them. If you go to the dealership there are Fortune $100 or over. So just buy them on eBay less than $10 a piece sometimes $5. Sometimes you can get two of them for $12. And then get the key cut at any locksmith or hardware. One guy charged me a dollar for each to cut at a hardware so it's $2 for two keys to cut. So they're very cheap anymore you don't need to take your chip out and glue it on the side of your ignition

    do not misunderstand, i completely enjoy the creativity and aspects of working the puzzle here...but now having gained some understanding of the workings I will choose to maintain the security features as designed..and bypass dealerships instead,...MOST. wallyworld stores now have replacement programmable chiped keys for about $35.00 out the door..my gm car works just fine with one..

    You can also place the key with the chip in the exact location if you have both sets of factory keys and a blank key[ no chip ] and trick the vehicle into thinking the blank key is the correct key but inserting blank key in turn on holding factory key in the location and turn off repeat with key 2 no more chip

    2000's toyota's are easy to program. Buy a chipped spare for $20 on Amazon, have it cut, program it yourself. You don't even need a scanner or programmer. Just the original key which came with the car.

    hey my cars old and not worth stealing and neither is his. what kind of tape did you use to hold the chip to the ignition and would it hold up in below freezing temperatures. we tried electric tape and gorilla tape and both came off from the low temperatures at night.

    I found the workaround for a 2008 Nissan Versa. The stupid transponder is a "feature" I can do without, and being robbed by Nissan dealers is something I can do without. There is a plastic "antenna ring" surrounding the ignition key slot. It is a module located above the lock tumbler and surrounding the entry. It forces you to have a chip/key in exactly the right place. Remove the shell around the steering column, and find one screw holding this antenna ring module in place. The screw can be accessed using a socket from above. Mount the key in the ring using cardboard and glue, as if it were in the tumbler, then relocate it somewhere under the ignition lock. So my chip key stays with the ring and I can use a unchipped key in the ignition lock. Seems to work.

    This does work but voids the warranty on the car and if the car gets stolen, the insurance company will not pay for the car because you compromised the theft system.

    • @stix562
      @stix562 2 года назад

      voids the car warranty .. hmm is that written in whose warranty ? I think that would be a lawsuit as the transponder is used when the vehicle is running.
      On the theft .. sure could be an issue for the insurance company, however peoples cars have been stolen because the doors were not locked again a lawsuit would probably handle that.

    I liked this video. That bit about his wife losing the keys made me smile... guilty!!!! and yes I bemoan the days of the easy car start. The keys nowadays and systems which are supposed to be safe are not safe and they are just designed to make money. sigh.

    Be aware that some cars (an 04 Mazda in my case) will detect that the key transponder is not being removed every time the car is shut off.
    Then after a few trips it will disable the engine for a time-out period.

    If you have only one chipped key, make cheap copies to operate door.
    Then attach your chipped key on a retractable cable and mount under the dashboard. The original key always remains hidden in vehicle and used to start in ignition lock cylinder ! You can have several cheap extra keys for entry.

    I bought a used truck and the plastic on the spare key was partially broke off and it had an ugly lump of tape on it. One day I decided to remove that ugly lump and just toss it. The other day I grabbed the spare instead of the usual key. Guess what, it wouldn't start the truck. I had unwittingly tossed the chip that was in that lump. Now I'm going to have spend big bucks to have a working spare made. In my defense my last truck was a 98 so I am not used to modern inventions.

  • @jnunez1203
    @jnunez1203 8 лет назад

    chatter smith i tink that the men who did the video is trying to use the chip for more than one key ,so the best choice its to just tape it directly to the antenna ring ,otherwise you would have to be removing the chip and switch it. from one key to the other evry time you may want to use like more than one key...like if you want to start your car with one and unlock with the other ,also it would still be able to start the car with any duplicated key made for that car as long as you got the chip attached to the antenna ring.

It's the whole lot with the wires it's just the key will of course turns it just does not bring up the dash lights are starts up . So taking out the chip and taping it like yours im hoping will work . However the chip is registered to the antenna so why does it have to be out of the key I'm so confused

    I would personally prefer putting the chip inside one of those "bypass modules" made for remote start systems than taping the chip on. Or at least tape it behind the plastic cover. they cost only $10. And I have done this before too. However on Chrysler cars I know another trick to disable SKIM from the PCM.
