  • Small towns are quite vulnerable to the effects of social dislocation caused by desperate ice users. In Nowra, an astonishing percentage of drivers test positive for amphetamines and in Lismore a dealer is arrested with a trove of crystal meth. Small town community leaders regularly work with authorities to confront as resolve the issue. We with Anthony Mundine as he visits his hometown of Wellington, a small NSW town that has been devastated by ice use.
This provocative series takes us to the frontline of Australia’s drug war on the drug known as Ice. Through unprecedented access, we follow the stories of Meth lab busts, front line importation arrests at the docks with Task Force Polaris, decontamination of suburbs by the cleanup crews, forensic teams tracing precursors and toxicologists investigating human impact from passive Meth cooking.

What’s the point of chasing after an addict when they clearly know where he has just bought them from, I thought the main point was to catch the drug dealers…

The reason is that it has to do with citizens voting in specific issues..
And lots of folks do not vote.
And the police therefore have lots of setbacks to policing. Policing isn’t easy due to all of these extra rules such as needing a write off from the states attorney- most police officers don’t sit at work and write to the states attorney to get the clear to invade a suspects drug house..
It isn’t just police know where the drug house is, it is if they have to clear to raid and arrest. And have witnesses. That’s is why it is important for neighbors and citizens to actually real world report issues. Which majority do not do. They call 311 and that’s it- no follow up no writing to STates attorney. And mo voting on legislations for police to have more funding and more access.

Just surviving Paycheck to paycheck until you are too old to work and on top of that, you have the government/law enforcement checking on you to make sure you are not having any illegal fun.
They take our youth and prime years, then let us have the twilight years as health/vitality is shutting down. It is beyond demoralizing to see how the wealthy live. If there was ever a peasant revolt, I don't think the people in charge realize they discord they are sowing.

They are going after the low hanging fruit if you ask me ... The cops can use the arrest numbers to validate the increasing money on police budgets but arresting small time dealers and users is never going to be a major impact ...
Investing in social services which is aimed at the root of why ppls lives are shxtty enough so that using meth is a good idea ... And then high level targeted investigation of the large scale production are the things which will make real progress.
Forward thinking methods, legalizing psylocibin mushrooms microdosing and medicinal marijuana have already shown they can be used as treatment for very problematic fentanyl users in Colorado, Maine and other areas.
Finally, a huge common denominator with both ice in aus and fentanyl in the us are the illicit Chinese labs pumping out fent and pre cursors for this high purity ice.

It's weird how ppl have a drug of choice- which is a misnomer because it has very little to do with choice. When we say "drug of choice" this is the one drug that they can't do casually and walk away from, the one that they love the moment they try it, and usually the one the ends them up in prison or dead. But this will be a different drug for each addict- for me it was opiates. All other drugs I could do here and there and not have any real issues with. But opiates were different- and I knew that the first time I tried them. Even when I was a kid and didn't know what getting high was- if I got any pain pills due to an injury or dental work- my mother would have to hold on to them and only let me have them when I really needed them- or I'd eat them up and beg for more. And I remember feeling like crap whenever they would run out, but I didn't really understand it was because they had run out. But coke, ice, alcohol, etc.- I could take or leave it, usually left it- it just never floated my boat, as they say. And I had friends who were just the opposite- they could do all the opiates and stuff they liked, no problems- but they got hooked on meth the first time they tried it. I've been clean now for over 15 yrs and I work in rehab now- we understand so little about addiction it's unreal. I think there is a much larger psychological component to it than we understand- I know there is.
We tell ppl certain substances aren't really dangerous because they're not physically addictive, only habit forming- meaning we form a mental dependency to it. But imo mental dependency is so much more difficult to get around than physical addiction- it's not even close. Getting an opiate addict through the first week to 10 days of sickness and physical symptoms- is the easy part, it's the next year or so of post-acute withdrawal syndrome that's the real problem. If you can get them into a stage in their life where there is new and exciting things going on- they're getting a job, an apartment, a girlfriend, developing friends, a social life, etc.- it's much, much easier. But let's be real, very few of your clients will be in that position in life- most of them will be older and not have a lot going on in their life. If you can get them into some kind of hobby they have passion for- it has to be something that stirs genuine passion in them- that helps tremendously. But you have to remember this person's brain chemistry has been altered, they are not capable of feeling joy and happiness like you are- they're not capable of waking up and feeling energized or optimistic about the day- the chemicals that make all that happen do so by exciting receptors-the same receptors the drug they were taking made fire- which means their sensitivity has been dialed back so far- this persons natural brain chemistry is no longer capable of producing those emotional states any longer. Overtime this will change- but it will take a long time- and if they use again, they just prolong this happening.
Not only has the sensitivity of those receptors been dialed back- but many of them split- making two where there was just one- and now there are so many their body can't make enough of the proper neurotransmitters to fill them all. Having empty receptors is not comfortable- it sucks. Not only do they regulate mood, energy, outlook, etc.- they also regulate things like body temp., digestion, sleep cycles, sinuses, etc. That's why addicts in withdrawal are throwing up, having diarrhea, runny nose and watery eyes, can't sleep, etc.. But at least those symptoms fade in about 10 days or so- it's the depression and inability to feel joy or happiness that gets ppl- which lasts for really long periods of time.

Pretty Cynical of the police officer around 33 min mark ... Speaking on Jared the 27 yr old stopped while driving and tested positive for ice and cannabis.
First off, the guy was nothing but polite, cooperative and goes on to be frank about how he was hooked from 1st use of ice pretty much ... And would advise younger ppl to never go for that 1st experience with it ... Only for the cop to remark how they had stopped Jared from using that day but he has no doubt they'll be seeing jared back in the drug testing bus again in future ... Even if stats back that statement up, you'd think the police would actively want and be vocal about their encounter hopefully stopping them from future use or at least give the users food for thought
