What's the best Alex Garland movie we've gotten so far? My answer will always be Ex Machina...
Favorite directed - Ex Machina. Favorite "written by" - Dredd.
My favourite film of all time, sunshine, is a film he's actually written. The ultimate recommendation if you still haven't seen it
Annihilation. An interesting take on H. P. Lovecraft's 'The Colour Out Of Space'.
Couldn't get into Ex Machina as one character was an idiot, one an utter narcissist, and the machine a psychopath. I've spent enough time in the tech world to have any interest in it anymore.
I haven't seen Men, but I like Ex Machina the most
Annihilation and Dredd
I can appreciate this kind of movie when it doesn't pick a side and shows the devastation war brings. Some early reviews were calling this a masterpiece. You said it's not even Garland's best film. Great review!
Definitely nowhere near a masterpiece from where I'm sitting, but still a worthwhile film to check out on the biggest screen you can. Thanks for watching, dude!
That last piece you mentioned caught my attention. I appreciate when a film can avoid choosing a specific side politically. I’d much rather let the imagery and general story speak for itself and let US as the viewer draw conclusions without being force fed specific ideals. I’m definitely interested in checking this film out based on your review. Well done Sully!
Hey thanks so much, dude! Yeah making a huge sprawling political war film without a specific agenda is definitely a choice, very interesting to see how it all plays out. Thanks for watching, Jonah!
Damn right about the audience talking about this long after the credits roll. I loved this film so much. Brutal, realistic, and TERRIFYING at certain points. One of my favourites of 2024 so far. Great Review, Sully!
Glad you loved this one more than I did, dude! Definitely a lot to admire from a filmmaking perspective, I just wish the characters gave us more to latch onto. Thanks for watching!
Great review man been hearing lots of buzz for this one and love that it’s got a core focus on the journalism and sounds like a really strong movie but I can def see your point about the messaging
Looking forward to seeing what you think of it, dude. Thanks for tuning in!
I guess I'll find out Sunday. Already bought my reserved seat. But I am going in with an open mind, and while I think a Civil war is possible, I have No idea how one would really play out As a veteran, the only thing I know for sure about war is it is something that should be avoided. I hate the collateral damage that goes with it.
I see one happening within 10 years. Maybe even this election. If it begun the government would be overwhelmed by guerrilla fighters, and many soldiers defecting to defend the constitution. The government would have allies ship in troops to assist in saving their tyrannical ruling and hire mercenaries. I believe we would probably separate and no longer be the “United states”.
I'm curious to hear what you thought of the film given your unique background!
Super excited for this one! This is definitely gonna ruffle some feathers, but I’m all for it. 😂
You're so right, I've already seen so many drastic reactions to this film on both ends of the spectrum. Can't wait to hear what you think of it. Thanks for tuning in, TJ!
Final combat scene makes the movie.
Annihilation my favorite Garland film. With Devs being my fav thing he's made. I'm excited to check this out. Got my tickets for Friday!
I've actually never watched Devs even though it's been on my watchlist for years. Really need to clear up that Alex Garland blind spot. Hope you really dig the film this weekend!
Good review man, I can't wait to see this film the weekend, even if it's not garland's best I still hope it's a very good film
What did you end up thinking of it? Thanks for tuning in, dude!
@@SullyStreams my review is up now, I recommend giving it a watch!
Soooo stoked!!! I have a small role in this masterpiece… just hope I made the cut!!!! We’ll see the 12th!!
Well?...Did you make the cut?!
That scene with the military cosplayer asking, "What kind of Americans?" pretty much told me where Garland stands.
War is a series of catastrophes followed by victory. - Georges Clemenceau
Nothing is as terrible as a battle lost, except a battle won. - Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Waterloo
It is well that war is so terrible else we should grow too fond of it. - Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Waterloo
I'm seeing it tomorrow, and I am glad to hear it's not a "this side vs that side" movie. That was my biggest concern and would've been my biggest criticism. Good stuff as always, dude. Looking forward to seeing this.
Yeah I keep going back and forth on this notion personally. I wasn't all that emotionally invested, but maybe I would have if the film took a stronger stance. But then not picking a side at all is a cool concept as well. Still wrestling with it. Looking forward to seeing what you think of it. Thanks for watching, man!
Crap movie. I wanted to walk out, but I paid $20 to see it to the end. The last 5 minutes were just ok action wise, but it was a political left wing wet dream on killing Donald Trump. Crap crap crap.
This movie sounds even more hyped now! Cant wait for this movie on Friday!
Glad to see you ended up thinking the film was decent. Thanks for tuning in, Dave!
Great review
Thanks so much! Did you end up checking this move out? Appreciate your tuning in to the review!
I definitely appreciated the sound and visuals and the action at times. The characters though and the show and no tell wasn’t really for me though. Wasn’t terrible though at least.
Yeah I definitely wish I was able to get emotionally attached to the characters, would've made the experience feel more worthwhile. Thanks for watching, dude!
Best movie he directed: Exmachina...
Best movie he wrote: 28 Days Later.
Honorable Mentions: Dread & Annihilation.
I think I agree with you completely. Whether he's behind the camera or is penning the script, I will always be interested in a project if he's attached to it. Thanks for watching!
So excited for this,
Hell yeah! Excited to hear what you think of this one. Are you a big fan of Garland's other films? Thanks for watching, Jeffery!
I'll admit that Alex Garland is an amazing director and I have enjoyed his films so far. However, I am a bit skeptical why he would want to craft a scenario of America in Civil War just to tell a "war is hell" story with journalists. This plot has been done many times and can be set in many historical conflicts throughout the world. Also, the film introduces a "third term" president (which is unconstitutional) and states just leaving the union (also unconstitutional). It appears that Alex Garland (who is British) does not understand how our Constitution works.
Finally, I have seen this trick too many times. When the filmmaker or even a critic say the film takes "no political sides", that is usually Hollywood code for "all non-liberals bad, but we still need them to buy tickets".
States can't secede? Jeez, why didn't anyone just explain that to the Confederacy? Would have saved so many lives.
@@tomoslewis9656You must me ignorant about what’s going on in the current political atmosphere. No its not unconstitutional for a state to secede.
@@tomoslewis9656 Actually, the end of the Civil War brought about a change in making it illegal for states to secede from the Union. Any state can petition, but that doesn't matter. The federal government has the final say on any state wanting to secede, along with other states giving their approval. Even Texas does not have the legal right to secede according to the Supreme Court. The Union must remain strong together in the post-Civil War era.
After seeing this movie, I will never take you reviews seriously again.
Somehow I think I’ll be able to press on
Well thought out review. Always excited about his films. My favorite Garland directed film is Annihilation. And his writing credits that include 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Never Let Me Go are very impressive. He is currently writing a screenplay for 28 Years Later.
Thanks
Really hoping that he knocks it out of the park with 28 Years Later, that could be an awesome project if done right. Thanks for watching, dude!
I got my fingers crossed about Civil War,but I didn't like the other movies you mentioned, which didn't impress me at all
I'll be curious to see what you think of this one if you don't enjoy Garland's previous work. I think this film is the most different out of his catalog so far, so maybe you'll enjoy it. Thanks for watching, Melissa!
I quite enjoyed it, gave it a solid 7 /10 on my review. I think for non americans (like myself) it's not as.... Raw.... Not as divisive
Glad you enjoyed the film as much as I did. Thanks for tuning in, dude!
I haven't seen this one yet, but my answer for best is probably still going to be ex machina.
Ex Machina is pretty much a perfect film from where I'm sitting. One of my favorites of all time and the best A24 has ever made. Thanks for watching, JM!
Ben Sailsbury and Geoff Barrow who did the score were actually going to record the score for Dredd, but Alex Garland went with Paul Leonard Morgan at the last minute. They released the soundtrack later as DROKK ( Garland and Barrow are huge Judge Dredd/2000AD fans). I'm 99% sure this is Garlands loose prequel about the end of democracy of America, before the fascistic Judge system took over. If you know 2000AD/Judge Dredd lore, you can see it!
Getting less and less interested in this movie by the day...
Why I'm curious?
Why do you think that is?
Why? Bc this could be our reality? Our world is so ass backward that my husband, who was in the military, is nervous to watch this bc of how real this could be.
Did anyone else find Jessie annoying and what she became in the end made me so mad!
Yes!
Replace "Brutal" with "STUPID"
What type of an American are you
Not the gay kind lol
@@KorDawg91 Pity!
The gay dude with painted finger nails holding a sniper rifle pretty well tells what side he’s on 😂👎🏼
I cringed so hard seeing that part.
I gave up after halfway through the movie ,ended up being bored, so I watched the rest, and I'm quite disappointed. I wouldn't recommend this movie .
