That photo at 5:05 is quite something! I actually found myself saying "oh, wow!" out loud. DRTV, I love you guys, thank you so much for all the help you've provided for beginner photogs like myself!
What I like in your vid's is that you give accurate no BS reviews on the lenses you're using. Before I but any Nikon lens I see your review first and the sarcasm is great....
The DX 35mm f1.8 costs less than 200€ here in Germany. It works well on an FX camera if you are in a pinch, it just vignets a little from f1.8 to f4, after that the vignetting gets too strong. This lens was made for FX cameras, costs more than three times as much... And it still has vignetting? What is the point?
Was getting ready to say Pentax falls behind on the 35s...never mind. At least their cheap lenes is under $150 and has great optical performance from wide open. (Albeit a touch slower)
I've got a f/1.8 35mm DX for my (admittedly ancient) D7, and I totally love the pictures I get out of the thing. (I also have two zooms that cover the 35mm area, but slower.)
I always wish I was invisible so I could just walk up to people and take pictures and them not know I was there. And here is this guy just walking up like the paparazzi (but with better intentions). My hero.
People look at the bodies/systems? I thought the strap was the thing on DR? Surely the big issue here is the nudity? Were they out of Canon and Pentax straps? Enquiring minds demand to know... :-)
Nice review, and I enjoy your humor - like I'm being lead around Hong Kong by a funny friend. I appreciate that it's not just a gushing review - actually a critique!
Hi there! I'm a new subscriber and getting ready to purchase my first DSLR. One thing that I'm wondering from watching your videos. Are your cameras on any Accident Protection Plan, or do you just pay for the repairs when the accidents happen? Would love to suggest a video on camera accident plans vs. repair after accident. Definitely looking forward to learning more from your videos, and of course my own experiences along the way. ;)
I started out with a Nikon D50 in 2006, and bought the 35/1.8 AF-S DX version when it come out in 2009 for my D50, though I ended up upgrading to the D700 later that same year. What most people don't realize ; is that the 35/1.8 DX AF-S works VERY good on a Full-Frame without goign to DX mode - as long as you shoot it wide-open (i.e no part of the Diaphragm in the way) - it's VERY sharp and produces a pleasing bokeh - sure there's the usual vignetting you get for shooting at such a wide-open aperture; you`d get that with FX lenses on FX bodies anyway. If you shoot at narrower apertures like f/3.5 and up you get pure black corners for obvious DX on FX reasons. I initially sold my 35/1.8 DX a year later cause i was more of a AIS 50/1.2 bokeh-whore. But i recently re-purchased the 35 1.8 DX to use on my D700 again. Store salesmen thought i was mad till i just snapped his portrait and let him see the result :)
Hey Kai, I'm going to ask you a question that nobody ever asked :) How often do you take photos of random subjects who later complain and ask you to delete them? Possibly cursing you? :)
I have two questions . 1. I'm going to enter into the dslr camp(nikon) . Should 35mm be my first lens instead of a kit lens , like 18-55 ? 2. Why doesn't this nikkor 35mm have VR ?
I think this lens is a bargain considering it performance, focus is relatively fast, distortion acceptable, well bokeh, not as milky as Sigma and rough compare to f1.4 but it is still good enough
And he's talking about the FX version, not the DX. This lens actually slipped under my radar, so I was surprised when he called it "expensive" until he said that it was FX. :D
RiKKuXd28 I think Kai once said he uses Aperture priority a lot sometimes (because the light keeps changing through busy streets and cause he likes to change depth of field often)...it really depends on what you're comfortable with.
Strange that Nikon have 'failed' with this new 35mm which frankly is a bread & butter lens. I've used/ owned the Nikkor 35 f2 AI & Nikon 35mm F2 AF-D. I have neither now as I have moved on (mainly) to use Canon - the new Canon 35 f2 IS is excellent but surely it should NOT be better than a decent piece of Nikon glass.. as I said strange
600 bucks for a very plasticy 35mm 1.8 is pretty nuts imo. if your in the market for a prime 35 north of 500 bucks why wouldn't you just splurge a little more and get the IQ , build quality, and higher aperture of the sigma 35mm 1.4 art?
john anastas The Sigma weighs twice as much, can have inconsistent AF and isn't actually sharper across the frame, the Nikon is sharper in the corners but the Sigma in the mid, you won't be able to tell without doing side by side pixel peeping either way though.
How about checking out INTERESTING lenses, and not just standard focal length standard lens design lenses? E.g. Sony 135 F2.8 T4.5 STF (Smooth Trans Focus) with a special bokeh. Much more interesting.
You guys should do a comparison between this and the 35mm ƒ/1.8 DX shot on an FX body. That lens vignettes too, but at least it's super sharp with great bokeh :)
I don't care if it's Nikon, or Canon, but can you tell me if it works out cheaper having Nikon when it comes to lenses, as you can use old lenses on it too?
Depends on how cheap and cheerful you want to go. Both C+N have lots of lenses old and new but cheap and really good don't tend to mix all that much. Also a lot of old Nikon lenses don't play nice with a lot of new Nikon bodies (the Df being a noticeably, but expensive and naff, exception).
you can't use old canon lenses in eos cameras different system, unless you use adapter witch causes inferior quality. where as you can use old brilliant manual nikon lenses on nikon, plus over all the lenses are slightly cheaper for Nikon.
The Nikon D5000 is a crop sensor camera and Each lens is for different purposes. Nikon "Newer" 35mm f/1.8 Lens: - Good for street photography. - Equivalent to 56mm. - Not so good Bokeh. - Cost $600 USD. Nikon 50mm f/1.8G Lens: - Good for portrait photography. - Equivalent to 80mm. - Bokeh is very good. - Cost $180 USD. Again, it depends what lens you are in need of... wide for street photographer or everyday use (or) the narrow more sharper images for portraits. I personally go for both but go for the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G Lens & the Nikon 50mm f/1.8G Lens and save $200, instead of just wasting $600 on one lens! Hope this makes sense to you and helps you. Good luck!
I want to buy for my sister these lenses, but she has a Full Frame Nikon and I have a D3400. If I buy these for her, can I still borrow and use on my DX body or do I really need to buy both DX and FX versions? I heard you cannot use DX lens on Full Frame, but not vice versa?
I do a lot of automotive photography and I would like that the subject (the car) stands out a bit better than with my standard Nikon 18-55mm. I already thought about a 50 or a 35mm 1.8 lens. Does anybody have some tips or advices?

I keep having to say this: sales does not mean objective quality; it only means the perception of quality. Justin Bieber sells a lot of albums and shows; does that mean he has talent?
When you say "jumping ship to Canon" I assumed you were talking about people purchasing Canon more. That seems logical to me. What did you have in mind?
i see you like a new style of review.. like a mixtureof the new and old digitalrev.. like beeing funny but more informativ like before but also more funny like inthewer digitalrev. Its like you try ti find the best mix and you are getting close.. ilove it and keep it like that! And people seem to like it to i see like going up. eric madrid What does wideness have to do with landscape photography? You can even use a tele lens for landscapes! It depends on what you are shooting.
the worst part about this lens is the vignetting at maximun aperture, not so good to landscapes. Look at the jaredpolin review. There are better lenses
***** You don't really shoot landscapes at the maximum aperture though. You usually stop it down a little since landscape photography doesn't need fast shutter speeds. Landscapes usually don't get up and run away^^ This is probably a great near all-purpose lens, for what it does it's just way too expensive. Almost all plastic and vignetting for 650 bucks is just not a good deal.
I have a DX camera with a 50mm f1.8G equivalent to 75mm. I want to buy a 35mm. Which one is better regardless of sensor size? 35mm f1.8G DX? or a 35mm f.18G FX?
+Reginald Santos Actually not true in most cases. Nikon has relatively few DX lenses, compared with the untold multitude of so-called FX lenses (ignore these marketing distinctions) Nikon have made for decades. If you limit yourself to so-called DX lenses, you limit yourself to fewer lenses and, in many cases, higher prices. A D7000/7100/7200 gives great performance and the ability to use and meter Ai, AF and AFS lenses (auto-focus the latter 2). You can save tons buying used lenses by opening yourself to the wider Nikkor lens market. I have a D7100 and I just bought a used AF-D 35-70 f2.8 for 190USD. Equivalent focal length becomes a bit longer, but, man, what a lens.
Jee Vang Pretty much any country allows the capturing of photographic content on public property (except N Korea, seriously, its the only notable country).

DRTV, I love you guys, thank you so much for all the help you've provided for beginner photogs like myself!
its perfect because of its "light weight compactness"... attaches to a D4S. lmfao so Digitalrev
Yes, a light lens on the biggest SLR imaginable! Hilarious!
We take a look at the new FX 35mm f/1.8 from Nikon: Nikon 35mm ƒ/1.8 G FX Hands-on Review
Well do I need one lol guess I will have to watch
I have the DX version and I do like it
not to plastic but the price is good for DX
I really do enjoy it
K now I need to ask which body
What I like in your vid's is that you give accurate no BS reviews on the lenses you're using. Before I but any Nikon lens I see your review first and the sarcasm is great....
The picture with the mother and the daughter on the stairs, that's beautiful.
Damn you Kai!

I am. ✋

2020 bruh

yes, its almost 2021 & watching.
In the United States, you'd get smacked in the face for taking pics of strangers like that! LOL.. I guess we're paranoid and stressed out.
true... and you also be asked to delete the photo in front of them..but oh well lol
I Australia too, and rightly so i think, i actually think street photography is overrated, unless you are really good at it.
Jesse Flintstone yeah it's so odd...many first world countries are like that (France, Australia, US)...
have you ever heard of garry winongrand or bruce gilden?
Franklin Savulich I have this lenses...is fantastic...thank you nikon for my passion....
I remember the days of the old Digital Rev..I would actually like to see Kai do a parody type of thing of those good ol'days
yeah it was awesome

I've got a f/1.8 35mm DX for my (admittedly ancient) D7, and I totally love the pictures I get out of the thing. (I also have two zooms that cover the 35mm area, but slower.)
So in the end it shows that the 35mm 1.4 might be the better bang for the buck. Impressive.
Best photography channel.
Bring back some outtakes and bonus material at the end of episodes. I miss those.
I'll stick with my 35mm from the 80's.
Glad to share a comment on a awesome channel your guys rock...

Some of us like Vignetting that come with a short lens. A lot of that goes away with a small aperture. Sweet lens. Thanks for the Video.
Kai has womanly hands.
SERIOUSLY??? Four Nikon vids in a row?
People look at the bodies/systems? I thought the strap was the thing on DR? Surely the big issue here is the nudity? Were they out of Canon and Pentax straps? Enquiring minds demand to know... :-)
If it vignettes a lot, just use the DX version!!
It doesn't Vignette as much as you think on FX!
Easily adjusted in post!

5 reasons you need all kinds of lens at last.
I have two questions .
1. I'm going to enter into the dslr camp(nikon) . Should 35mm be my first lens instead of a kit lens , like 18-55 ?
2. Why doesn't this nikkor 35mm have VR ?
Tamron 150-600mm.... How about a shoot out with comparable pieces?
Missin Alamby
dude you look like a 50 year old guy. Stop creeepin' on young chinese girls.
Go fuck yourself. I wasn't going there.. It was content related,
I think this lens is a bargain considering it performance, focus is relatively fast, distortion acceptable, well bokeh, not as milky as Sigma and rough compare to f1.4 but it is still good enough
Its performance doesn't justify its price. Sigma 35 1.4 Art is the way to go!!
Thanh Nhan Do are you fucking kidding me? Sigma 35mm f/1.4 costs like $900 while this lens costs about $150.
Nevermind i am watching in mid-2017
And he's talking about the FX version, not the DX. This lens actually slipped under my radar, so I was surprised when he called it "expensive" until he said that it was FX. :D
Sigma Art images are sterile and boring.
Im curious as to which mode you use to walk and shoot and have such amazing photographs?
RiKKuXd28 I think Kai once said he uses Aperture priority a lot sometimes (because the light keeps changing through busy streets and cause he likes to change depth of field often)...it really depends on what you're comfortable with.
Aperture Priority.

+Stefan Breton Only so much. Googled it, and above f/5.6 you start to get a lot of vignetting.
***** True. I should have said "can be used on FX" with the details you gave
Stefan Breton you re wrong. it's not sharp at all on the fx! I tried it... it blows
Good review. You look very dapper in a blazer!
how about a shooting guide to Hong Kong. I'm going to be there for a day. I'd love to know where to go.

how will be that in a Nikon d5300. Wil the same Sharp images and auto focus point come in 5300
600 bucks for this.... A bit overpriced, isnt it, Nikon?
Especially with so much vignetting. The DX model doesn't even have as much as this lens.

chelle read cheaper now lmaoooo
