  • First, read this review (theradavist.co...) at The Radavist. This is a supplement to the in-depth review.
    The Pinion Smart.Shift gearbox offers electronic shifting for instantaneous engagement, eliminating the soft or sluggish feeling found with the grip shift Pinion systems. Yet this system isn’t as perfect as it’s marketed, and John found one critical shortcoming during his review period…

    I have a Rohloff and have no problem shifting Most or all internal geared setups shift pretty much the same way. You need to let off the pressure just before you shift. Derailleurs worked the same way when they were introduced. If you timed it wrong you wrapped the derailleur around the hanger. They use springs now to prevent this and the shift doesn't complete until the dead spot in the pedal stroke. The Radavist is aware of this and doesn't like internal geared setups. I haven't missed a shift or gotten stuck in a high gear at the bottom of a grade in over a decade. I have a belt instead of a chain and don't miss cleaning the bicycle. A quick rince with a hose and I use the same towel that I dry me off in the shower.

    Would it not be similar to a traditional chain drive system? I can't just mash into different gears when I'm pushing downward on the pedals. If I time my shifting when my non-drive side is just about to be in the downward position, my traditional chain drive groupset shifts perfectly. If I do it seemingly randomly, especially when the drive-side is on it's way downwards, it lags hard on the shift and is very finicky (tested on 11 speed 105, ultegra, and grx). I'm assuming it's probably near the same with the pinion. If you time it correctly, you can predict when the load on the cranks will be at its lowest.

    Thank you for reviewing it honestly, because if we look at the people who review it, they always say it's perfect, they can shift under load gears, even though it's not, and there are still a lot of shortcomings... Why isn't Pinion honest about this? It's a shame.

    • @johnprolly

      That's the thing. They ARE honest. The manual states it won't shift with 250 NM of load (the website has all this in the review) - it's the reviewers who are not honest. 😕

      @@johnprolly and they should say, it can't shift under load, from the customer point of few, who cares.. if they advertise it can shift under load.. and it should be able to. because this is really fundamental. In the world there is only 1 hub that can shift under load, that's Nuvinci/Enviolo but their range is only 380%. unlike Rohloff or Pinion which are above 500% and Nuvici and I have tried it directly, it is true and real, it really can shift under load, unlike the advertised SmartShift, is wow, in fact, it doesn't

    With the electronic shifting isn’t the electronics meant to after receiving the instruction wait until the pedals are at 6/12 o’clock and then do the shift, when there’s no load. I don’t understand how it can have a problem shifting under load based on how they describe how it is implemented. Especially at a low cadence. There should be lots of time for it to shift.

      I honestly think a large majority of people just don't understand physics and shift at random moments, and don't time it. You have to literally do the same thing with traditional chain drive systems if you want smooth shifting.

    Can a left side crank arm Stages Power Meter be used on a Pinion gearbox? Thank you

    • @Silidons91
      @Silidons91 Месяц назад

      No it can't. I even emailed 4iiii, and they don't install them either because they haven't done enough testing. I was advised it has to do with the predictability of the flexing of the crankarm itself, and without enough testing, they can't provide accurate power data.

    You simply need to lessen pedal pressure for a splt second. No drive train shifts under load - chain or geared.

    I am not sure I understood the circumstances that led to cancelled shifts. Do you guys think I will run in to much trouble with cancelled shifts? I have always riden with internal gear hubs. I am used to letting of a little on my pedals while shifting.

      The old system you would have to momentarily reduce torque, like you mention, but also shifted better with the cranks at 6 and 12. Seems like more of the same.
